- Tablet rumor roundup
MacRumors has put together this roundup, consolidating the rumors of an Apple ultra-portable macbook. I've made no secret of my wish for a double- or triple-size iPod-touch-like tablet but a 2.5-pound NAND-based Macbook sounds pretty appealing, even if the estimates are on the pricey side.So what are your takes on ultraportability? Let us know in the poll below.

Filed under: iPod Family, Odds and ends, Bad Apple
This situation will probably not affect most iPod owners but there is a 5 account limit in place for iPod song syncs. Although iTunes seems to be able to handle songs from an unlimited number of accounts, you can sync music from up to 5 accounts to any one iPod and not more. Bad news for large families with multiple accounts, but good news for the RIAA I suppose.

There's a passel of AAPL financial tidbits from the past few days that merit review, on this Monday morning where Apple stock opened at 193.58, just $1.41 under the 52-week (and all-time) high of 194.99 hit on Friday. Forthwith:
- RBC Capital and Bear Stearns analysts, last week, raised targets for Apple into the stratosphere. RBC's Mike Abramsky says $215 for a price expectation, with revenue estimates of $32.7B and $40.4B for the next two years. Andy Neff of BS is looking for $249, and sees retail feedback indicating higher product sales. Both analysts, in fact, see a big bump in Mac sales through the December quarter, countering Apple's guidance of a slight slip from Q3 to Q4. [via Barrons]
- With regard to Apple's financial forecasting, Arik Hesseldahl at Business Week revisits the Q1 forecasts from September and asks if Apple guidance is still as conservative as Mitt Romney's underwear drawer. Even though the numbers seemed very high at the time, the latest analyst reports are starting to make them seem more realistic.
- The question of Apple's $15B nest egg was tackled by Fortune, Seeking Alpha and more late in the week. Should there be a dividend, a share buyback, or just a really, really big cookie jar under the world's largest mattress? On the acquisition front, the fan favorite seems to be a buyout of TiVo... could give a real boost to the flagging Apple TV 'hobby.'
- CNBC joined the subnotebook rumor parade with a Jim Goldman 'trusted source' report suggesting that an Apple 'nanobook' could come in at a nigh-unbelievable $1500 price point, complete with solid state drive. The consensus on last night's talkcast was that this pricing seemed a trifle fantastical, but we'd all be thrilled to be wrong.
- Our sister site BloggingStocks:AAPL has two interesting posts on the view of Apple from London's financial management community (spoiler: "Jolly good") and some cracks in the enterprise 'talk to the hand' attitude for iPhone use inside the corporate confines.

Filed under: Internet Tools, Open Source, Leopard
I know some folks have been looking for an AdBlock plugin for Safari that works with Leopard's Safari v3. The excellent Pith Helmet ($10) is now Leopard compatible, but the relatively new Safari AdBlock is open source and free. It's pretty much install and forget. The most recent version also includes initial support for AdBlock Plus style lists as well.
Safari AdBlock is a free download from sourceforge and is Leopard-only.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Productivity, TUAW Tips, Leopard
Over at Mac OS X Hints, johnga1t has discovered that Leopard's Mail.app has a more powerful search functionality than is apparent on the surface. Basically, it seems that Mail.app's search box can leverage some of the power of the new, more sophisticated Spotlight syntax, which means you can now uses fields to limit your searches. The syntax is: keyword from:some_user subject:some_word
So for example you can search for all the emails from me with from:Mat Lu in the search box. And these can be combined. To find all the emails from me with 'philosophy' in the subject line it would be: from:Mat Lu subject:philosophy and so on. One thing I've noticed is that you do need to make sure it searches the "Entire Message."
Apparently the available fields are: from, subject, and email (which searches the email address rather than the name). As one of the commenters at Mac OS X Hints notes, you actually have more options when searching directly from Spotlight (e.g. Boolean operators), but nonetheless, I think this is handy time saving trick.

Filemaker have released a new beta version of Bento, their easy to use database application (we took an early look at Bento last month). I've been playing with it for a while, and I'm enjoying it.
I use Filemaker Pro at work, so I miss some things like defining my own relationships, scripting, etc., but Bento is quite useful for the project that doesn't need all the power of Filemaker Pro. You truly can get a database up in minutes for your soccer team, organization, or inventory.
This current beta will expire on February 14, 2007 (It's always a shame to break up on Valentine's Day). Filemaker notes that you should not manually delete any of your current Bento files before applying this update; The new version will update everything automatically.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Here's a quickie update notice: Adobe recently updated both Premiere Pro and Soundbooth for complete Leopard compatibility.
Premiere Pro 3.1.1, a 54MB update, also includes "important bug fixes" (but what they are, is anyone's guess), and is available from Adobe's website, in addition to the 4.1MB Soundbooth fix.

Earlier this week, Panic released Transmit 3.6.3. If you're unfamiliar, Transmit is the FTP application that's loved by many (including us). Version 3.6.3 offers improved Leopard and Amazon S3 compatibility, French and German localization and several bug fixes.
If you haven't tried it out, take this opportunity. It's a great application. This update is free for registered users of version 3.x. Transmit requires Mac OS 10.3.9, and a single license will cost you $29.95.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, How-tos, Tips and tricks
There's something about hand writing the names and address of each of your holiday card and gift recipients. That "something special" is frustration! Hand cramps, errors, wasted envelopes. How pleasant.
Forget all that and let Apple's Address Book take care of it for you.
First, create a new Smart Group. I went through my list of contacts and identified the lucky few who will receive cards from me this year (jealous?). In the note field of each, I added the keyword "holiday."
Next, I selected "New smart group..." from the File menu and set the criteria to be "Note contains 'holiday'." Next, I named the Smart Group "Holiday" and presto! My list was complete. In the future, I can add new contacts to the list by simply typing "holiday" in their notes field.
Now to print. Address Book prints directly to standard Avery labels. With your new Smart Group selected, simply select "Print." The print dialog box appears. First, set the "Style" menu to "Mailing Labels." Then, click the "Layout" tab and select the labels you're using. Then click print and you're all done!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

iPhone Developer Tommy Svensson has just released an iPhone MMS application allowing you to send MMS messages with your iPhone. This app does not enable the iPhone to receive MMS, just to send it. Being an early release, you can only send images (no movies) at this time. The MMS app is not yet released via Installer. You can download a copy directly from Swirly Space and install it manually. For more information, check out this ModMyiFone thread.
Thanks, Dima Kovalev.

Nick "Drudge" Penree writes that he took my tip for boosting audio and made an Installer.app package that does all the work. It's called AudioAmp and is available in Tweaks 1.1.2. TUAW readers have reported various levels of success with the package. Some readers are delighted. Others feel it overboosts the volume.
I finally had my chance to test this hack more impersonally. I grabbed my Radio Shack Sound Level meter, installed the tweak and tested levels during playback. I put the sound meter and the iPhone on a table and kept both units in the same positions through all the tests. I made no change to the volume bar (always set at the maximum), or the music (Beach Boy's, "Sloop John B", always starting playback at the beginning). I remotely rebooted the iPhone after each test via ssh so I wouldn't mess up the positioning on the table.
And my results? Identical readings for sound levels, whether Default > Default was set to 0.99, 0.70, 0.45, or 0.30.
Thanks, Tom

Soup's on! The weekly talkcast is ready and available for your audio delectations. Christina and I talked about the Amazon Kindle, running IE on your Mac, gift ideas and more. You can download the 44 minute, 25 MB show right here directly, pick it up in our RSS or iTunes feeds, or stream it direct from Talkshoe.
We've heard from some Leopard users who are having difficulty with the RSS feed in Mail.app when we have a podcast enclosure; please do let us know in the comments if you're one of the affected. We are testing on our end, and if we can nail down the issue we'll let you know. Update: Per our commenters below, it's not just us -- any feed with audio enclosures seems to give Mail the marbles of doom.
Join us again Sunday night at 10 for the next installment of our funfest. As for future listening opportunities -- week after next, Sunday 12/16, I'm scheduled to cohost the Typical Mac User podcast with Victor Cajiao. It comes on right before our show (8-9 pm ET), so you can plan your whole evening.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, Internet, Internet Tools, iPhone
TUAW reader jadam asks if someone would please code up a bookmarklet that allows you to paste into website fields. It's a bit of a hack but I've put together this bookmarklet that you can sync to your iPhone and paste a pre-defined phrase into Safari.
This version pastes the word TUAW but you can easily replace TUAW (defined by "replacetext") with any other phrase. The bookmarklet iterates through all the form fields on your page, allowing you to select where to paste. You're welcome, jadam!

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/07/tuaw-responds-reader-requests-iphone-javascript-pasting/#comments - Estimating the Jailbreak population for iPhone and iPod touch
Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone
iPhone Atlas posts that AppSnapp, the 1.1.1 jailbreak site, has been used more than 1 million times. Now, of course, that does not mean that there are more than 1 million jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches out there, it just means that the procedure has been run that many times. I know that my two units account for at least a dozen uses of the site but I'm guessing that I'm at the high end of per-unit applications of the exploit.
For some additional numbers on jailbreak penetration, turn to Shaun Erickson's blog. Shaun runs STE Packaging, one of the two main iPhone software repositories. His top 25 downloads list is headed by OpenSSH, with almost a half million downloads, and Apollo IM with 350,000. Multiple downloads (an important consideration after firmware upgrades and system restores) may be offset by the fact that not every user downloads every package. It looks like it's fairly safe to say that several hundred thousand units have been jailbroken and are running third party applications. The AppSnapp site suggests even higher numbers. Since the exploit is limited to the 1.1.1 firmware, it eliminates having to account for re-downloads due to firmware upgrades.
Thanks Drudge

Filed under: Tips and tricks, Leopard
One of my Mac OS pet peeves from way, way back is how the Finder handles a double-click to a file in the Trash. Sure, I know that opening the file may prevent me from effectively emptying the Trash, but I really would love to know what's in that graphic I tossed weeks ago before I wantonly delete it. Wouldn't it make more sense to open a temporary version of the file, or have that dialog offer to move the file back to my Desktop for me? C'mon, Apple, throw me a bone here.
Much to my glee and moderate surprise, Quick Look works like a charm on files that are trashed; that's exactly what I need to check that the files I'm throwing out are actually what they purport to be (not that I'd throw out the TUAW logo, that's just an example of a file I need to rescue). The more time I spend with Leopard, the more I'm convinced that Quick Look, as humble and subtle as it is, may actually be the killer feature of 10.5.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Freeware, Internet Tools, Leopard
On-the-ball readers will know that whilst Leopard brought us tabbed iChats, it was Chax - Kent Sutherland's excellent & free iChat enhancer - that initially brought us the feature in earlier versions of Apple's IM client. Avid Chax fans wondering "What's next?" will no doubt be happy to see that Kent has just released a beta of Chax 2.1. The main feature in this release is the introduction of unified contact lists, eliminating the need to have more than one window open (instead of up to 3 with AIM, GTalk and Bonjour chatting) for all your contacts.
Other features include auto-accepting of file-transfers, screen-sharing invites and AV invites, along with some other fixes and enhancements. It goes without saying that as a beta you should only install it if you understand that funky things might happen to your Mac, but if you're a die-hard iChat user you might want to head over to the Chax blog and grab the beta right now.
