- Hello There
Hello TUAW readers, my name is Cory Bohon. I'm the newest TUAW blogger and very excited to be blogging for one of the best Apple blogs anywhere.
I started blogging in 2004 at the "young" age of 15 (I am now 18). 2004 was a big year for me, since that is when I got my first Mac as well. I started learning AppleScript soon after - it was fascinating to me, and still is.
I look forward to blogging here. I hope this will be a fun journey for us all.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/13/hello-there/#comments - Entourage 2008 and Time Machine don't get along
Filed under: Software
Office 2008 for the Mac is a huge release for Microsoft, and a big deal for most Mac users. I've been anxiously waiting for the newest version of Office for one thing only: Entourage 2008. For my money Entourage is the best mail client on OS X (feel free to call me names in the comments), but Entourage 2004 certainly shows its age.
Entourage 2008 looks great, but not all is sunshine and daisies. Entourage 2008 stores most everything it uses in one big database file. There are many reasons to do this, but are also a few drawbacks. One of the biggest Leopard related drawbacks is the fact that Time Machine does file level, not bit level, backups. Every time a file is changed it is included in Time Machine's backups. Every time Entourage gets an email, you add a contact or event, or label something Entourage's database file is changed. Add to this the propensity for that database file to grow rather large and you can see the problem here. Microsoft suggests you simply exclude Entourage's DB from Time Machine's backups, but I hope they come up with a better solution in the near future.

Loyal TUAW reader Mike Schleifstein wrote in on our tip line with a thoughtful commentary about the CompUSA closings. Losing CompUSA means losing local Apple Certified Repair centers for a large segment of the United States without access to Apple Stores. More, without the brick and mortar CompUSA stores, many potential customers will not be to try out Apple products in person or buy Mac software at a real store. We decided to ask you, our readership, how the CompUSA closings will affect you. Here's an Amazon Unspun poll that you can expand and add your own feedback to. I'm curious to see how these closings will affect the TUAW community as a whole. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, Apple
Apple has posted a special Christmas flavored Get A Mac ad. This ad, as you can see above, features a stop motion-esque (I'm going to assume that they are actually CGI) PC, Mac, and Santa singing a little Christmas carol for you. PC makes sure to let you know to never buy a Mac, or else Santa might not like you.
Thanks, Matthew.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software Update, Apple, Security
Apple has just released QuickTime 7.3.1 which addresses that nasty RTSP vulnerability recently discovered (and discovered with zero day exploit code no less!). This update also fixes 2 other security problems with QuickTime. It looks like Flash is being handled in a safer way, and a heap buffer overflow has been fixed. Apple suggests all QT 7 users install this update.
Quicktime 7.3.1 is available for:

iPhone developer Drunknbass has been working amazingly hard for some time now getting video recording working on the iPhone. I've been following his effort and seeing him struggle with some major obstacles. It's not a simple thing. There are issues about capturing the data and producing output in real time. And here, sometimes events outpace us. I was hoping to post a real video with this write-up but since the software has already been leaked, I decided to go ahead and write about what currently exists.
Drunknbass's program is groundbreaking. It records 5 seconds of video at 10 fps and then immediately plays it back and proves that usable video capture is possible.

Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone, iPhone 101
Everyone knows that you can use a single finger to scroll web pages in Mobile Safari but it's less well known that you can use two fingers to scroll frames and other subpage elements. Normally, on personal computers, you use a separate scroll bar for webpage frames. On the iPhone and iPod touch, these scroll bars do not appear and the content expands to fill the frame set area. By using two fingers at once, you tell Mobile Safari to scroll the element rather than then entire page. I find this especially useful when filling out forms with scrolling selections such as when I do blog posts and need to add categories.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Freeware, Leopard
Here's an interesting list of applications supposedly killed by Leopard. There's no question that there's a huge amount of functionality in Leopard that was taken care of in Tiger by third-party apps (and this is just a list of freeware-- commenters pointed out last week that Jisho was made almost obsolete by the Japanese dictionary included with Leopard), but I'm not so sure this list is all it promises to be. No amount of tweaking to Spotlight will ever replace Quicksilver, and as good as iChat has gotten, I still like Adium for its easy customization.
And apps like CenterStage, who used to have a one goal (an open source Front Row replacement), have now been able to spread out and become more their own program instead of worrying about Apple's missing functionality.
As always, the best app for the job depends on both the job and the person doing it, so there are probably more than a few places where Leopard stepped up to fill functionality that users used to trust third-party software for. But it's a stretch at least to say Leopard killed these apps-- replication of one function now built into the OS doesn't mean all the apps other functions are useless.

Filed under: Gaming, Humor, Odds and ends, The Woz
Just call it the WozWatch-- not only did Woz just appear in a ride at Epcot, but now he's going to appear live on your computer, playing (what else-- this is the Woz) Segway polo.
A site called The Digital Lifestyle is going to be broadcasting a Segway polo match (it's what it sounds like-- polo with Segways) this Sunday afternoon at 1pm EST, and Steve Wozniak himself will be one of the players. I can't begin to imagine what eight old guys riding around on Segways trying to whack a ball must look like, but if you want to find out, set your iPhone alarms. "It's not a joke," claims the trailer, but we can't help but think there will be laughing involved.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Macworld, Analysis / Opinion, Odds and ends, Steve Jobs, Apple
Forbes is playing it safe with the Macworld predictions this year. Everything you've ever heard rumored about Apple in the last five years? Yeah, it's all here in their Macworld speculation guide. From the sub-notebook, to the iTablet, all the way to the Beatles, an Apple car, and even the old Apple gaming device, they cover pretty much all the bases.
In a way, it's good, because at least it means that Forbes has exactly no idea what's coming at the big event. Don't get me wrong-- I'm sure we'll still see it leaked a few days ahead of time by the Washington Post or the New York Times. But at least now, before the holidays, they're as clueless as everybody else.
So what is coming to Macworld? At this point, I would be surprised not to see the sub-notebook, and as we said in last week's Talkcast, it would be nice to see an update to the mini and/or the Apple TV. But let's face it: we won't know what Steve is going to talk about until he actually stands on stage and talks about it.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Video, Deals, Holidays
Remember earlier this year when we posted about how to nab yourself a copy of DivX Pro? Well thankfully if you missed out first time, our colleagues at Download Squad were nice enough to point out that the DivX folks appear to be running this promotion again just in time for the holiday season. All you need to do is supply DivX with the all-powerful email address (although, that may be the deal-breaker for those wanting to keep their inbox tidy) and they'll send you a serial for 'the DivX codec, the DivX file converter, content upload, video player and web player'.
If DivX spurs you to think about what other codecs you could play on your Mac you should check out Perian - 'the swiss-army knife of QuickTime components' that makes a nice, free, companion to your free DivX licence.

Filed under: Switchers, Stocking Stuffers, TUAW Tips
As a recent fully-fledged "switcher" myself, I'd like to think I have some ideas about what to get the recent Mac convert (and no, this is not just my Amazon wish list - though anyone buying me stuff is free to use it as such). If you haven't already purchased the switcher in your life a gift for Christmas or the Birth of Santa (tm. Bart Simpson) or any other winter-themed occasion, here are some items you might want to consider. Please note that the prices in this guide are in USD and current as of this writing, subject to change without notice. Check with the manufacturer's website or your favorite retailer for updated pricing. Now, onto the goodies!
Books:
Maybe I'm just really lame, but I'm always a fan of giving (and receiving) books geared towards a person's interests and sensibilities. Somehow, a book just seems more personal than a gift certificate, and less easy to screw up than a piece of clothing...Continue reading TUAW Buyer's Guide: What to get a "switcher"

St. Clair Software has just released version 4.0 of its well-known Default Folder X for both Leopard and Tiger. This utility enhances OS X's Open and Save dialogs in a number of ways, allowing easy access to favorites and Spotlight comments, defining a per-application default folder, integrating with open Finder windows and more. The new version revamps the interface with a more HUD-like Leopard look and offers support for Quick Look as you can see above. Last week Macworld posted a preview video that does a good job of explaining just what makes Default Folder X so handy.
Default Folder X is $34.95 and a demo is available. The upgrade is free to registered users of version 3 who purchased after June 1, 2007. The upgrade cost for other OS X registered users is $14.95 (and $19.95 for OS 9 registered users).

The official word from Microsoft is that Office for Mac 2008 has been released to manufacturing. This means that the code is final and has been sent out to the factories for duplication and packaging ahead of its formal release at Macworld San Francisco on January 15, 2008. If you want a full preview, the Mac Office 2008 website is fully up and running.
After so many delays (and two full years since the first Intel Mac), it's good to know that the MacBU has finally met their goal of a Universal Binary, modernized version of Office -- equally importantly, a version compatible with the new Office 2007 file formats. Personally, I've been able to move almost all of my own stuff to iWork '08, even my professional academic writing. Nonetheless, I'm sure I'll end up picking up Office just for compatibility's sake. How many of you will be purchasing in January (and which one)?
If you're looking for the best deal on upgrades to Office 2008, reader Ty sent a reminder last night that you can buy Office 2004 now ($130 for the Student/Teacher edition is the lowest-cost tier) and then upgrade for the cost of S&H, $7. Not bad.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Sunday night's show featured Mat Lu as our capable host and panelists Mike Schramm, Christina Warren & yours truly discussing the state of the subnotebook rumors, Apple's finances and of course our choices for holiday gift giving. You can download the show directly, pick it up in our RSS or iTunes feeds, or stream it direct from Talkshoe. Music for this week's show by Brian McRae, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.
As noted last week, if you're reading the feed in Mail.app under Leopard, you may see a pause while the enclosure is downloaded. Unfortunately this seems to happen with any RSS enclosures and there's not much we can do about it right now -- sorry!
We'll be back Sunday night at 10 for our regular weekly show, but please take note: I'll be cohosting the Typical Mac User podcast with Victor Cajiao at 8 pm ET, then scooting over to TUAW for the night shift. Please join us for both!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
