- .Mac is down: Gather your children! Into the cellar!
.Mac web services are "temporarily unavailable" right now, yet the support page lists everything as "online and fully operational." No explanation was given for the outage, but there's no reason to panic.
Mail was working when tested, but iDisk access through afp:// appears to be shut off. Homepages and access to iDisk public folders seem to be OK, too. We'll keep tabs on this, and let you know when the service is back up and running. Check back soon!
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

As always, your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. And now, on to the questions!Continue reading Ask TUAW: 5.1 surround sound, bookmark syncing, MobileMe, MDI files, and more

Переслать - Which upcoming goodie are you anticipating?
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
With only a week before July, we're eager to get our hands on the new goodies from Apple. With so much to look forward to and try out, we're wondering which of the pending updates you're most interested in.
Is it Mobile Me's offer of "Exchange for the rest of us?" Perhaps it's iPhone software 2.0, or even the snazzy 3G iPhone you're waiting for.
Here's your chance to let us now. Add your answer to our highly unscientific poll, and we'll post the results tomorrow. Oh, it's like Christmas! In July. Or something.

Переслать - 24 Hour Fitness will install Nike+ gym equipment
Filed under: Hardware, iPod Family
Last year, we wrote about Life Fitness' plan to build exercise equipment with built-in iPod integration, allowing users do dock their iPod and control it from the machine itself.
This week, 24 Hour Fitness (the largest fitness club chain in the United States) announced their intention to install similar equipment at locations in New York, San Francisco, Miami, Denver, Portland and Salt Lake City. Unlike the Life Fitness machines, equipment at the 24 Hour Fitness clubs will record workout data in the same way that the Nike+ kit for the iPod does, and prepare it for upload at NikePlus.com. Expect the new machines to begin to arrive in July.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - Analysts: Macs will continue to take market share from PCs
Filed under: iPod Family, Apple, iPhone
Are you sitting down for this one? Good. Here goes: Apple is going to keep taking market share from "traditional PCs." I know, it's a real shocker. But so says Zacks Investment Research (which is not, apparently, run by a dude named Zack as you'd think). They say that consumers are enjoying Apple's innovations, and that a strong product line lead by the iPod, iPhone, and the MacBook Air will continue to increase Apple's business and give them a bigger piece of the personal computing pie. Who knew?
But Zacks isn't jumping into anything -- they still say that the iPod line will slow down over the next few years, so they're going "hold" with AAPL. Still, it's a good thing they told us about that marketshare thing. Without analysts like these, we'd have no idea what we're buying lately.

Переслать - Apple announces third-quarter earnings call
Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial
Once again, it's that time of year when tourists flock to the beaches, students leave their books behind and Apple executives describe how they've made much more money than the rest of us.
Earlier this week, Apple announced that their third-quarter earnings call will take place on July 21, 2008, at 2 p.m. Pacific time. It's been an up-and-down quarter for Apple's stock. It should also be noted that this will be the first report to contain information on sales of the iPhone 3G, assuming they do go on sale on July 11th without a glitch.
We'll be live blogging the call, so be sure and check back on the 21st. See you then!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - The real .mac opens up with new regulations
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Internet, Apple, MobileMe
ICANN, the ruling body for Internet domain naming, has voted to relax a few rules that will supposedly open up a whole slew of top-level domain names, multiple news sources are reporting. They haven't exactly said why they're doing this, only that it will "preserve the security, stability, and global interoperability of the Internet." Which seems like a good reason, we guess. But whatever the reason, it's good news for people who don't want to use the old standbys of .com or .org -- now, bidding can start for .sex, .xxx, .post, or any other combination of letters.
Like, for example, .mac. Yes, for the first time in the history of the Internet, Apple would have been able to make good on its .Mac brand -- except that, as you know, they decided just a few weeks ago to change that brand to Mobile Me. Though we supposed mobile.me is probably out there somewhere.
Of course, as we've speculated before, the change to Mobile Me wasn't so much about domain names as it was about just getting away from the Apple brand, and creating a service that both Mac and PC users would be interested in. So odds are that Apple wasn't waiting for .mac anyway. But it is interesting that even though they can finally have it, they don't actually need it any more.

Переслать - iTunes 7.7 to include remote control capabilities?
Filed under: iPod Family, Rumors, iPhone, App Store, SDK
Along with the new iPhone SDK 8 beta that came out tonight, Apple also shipped a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 to developers in the iPhone Dev Program. iTunes 7.7 is a requirement for the new iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 firmware; it also appears to include a new remote control feature.
According to an anonymous tipster, iTunes 7.7 will allow either an iPhone or iPod touch to download a free application that can remote control iTunes from anywhere in the vicinity of your Mac (most likely over your home network). Reportedly, this free application will be available in the App Store upon the 2.0 firmware release.
As we cannot confirm nor deny this tip, take it with a grain of salt until we get official word from Apple. However, as you may recall, we hinted about this capability a while back.

Переслать - iPhone SDK Beta 8 Released
The update is 1.25GB in size, and includes iPhone firmware revision 5a345. Typically, if the revision ends in a number, it's a pretty stable release. According to sources familiar with the release notes, things got a lot more stable in the last two weeks, since revision 5a331.
Also mentioned along with the update is a developer-only version of iTunes 7.7, which developers can use to "install iPhone OS Beta 8 on your Apple devices." The new version of iTunes doesn't seem to be included with the 1.25GB update,
however, and developers -- apparently -- are having a hard time finding it on Apple's websiteand is now available to developers as a separate download.More details about the SDK will be available here as we learn them, and will probably be posted to Apple's iPhone Developer Site when they're available. Tips, as always, are welcome at our tip line. We're happy to take a look at confidential information, and your anonymity is our guarantee.

If you've been looking to snag Parallels Desktop version 3.0, but don't want to pay the $79.99 associated with Parallels then a summer MacHeist bundle is just the thing. MacHeist is currently offering Parallels Desktop + Mac Pilot for only $49 (US).
Returning MacHeist customers receive a $10 discount, making the bundle only $39. That's a steal! In addition, the first 1000 customers to purchase the bundle will recieve a free "mystery application" (one that's an Apple award winner) which will be detailed on Friday.
Update: The rumor on the street is hinting at the "mystery application" to be either Coda or Lineform.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - iPhone app developers: Start your engines
Filed under: Rumors, App Store
According to a few anonymous tips, the iPhone App Store is open and ready for business -- for developers.
Apple has opened the App Store to allow registered developers to prepare the final versions of their apps for distribution. Apple has the ultimate say about which apps will appear in the App Store when it launches in early July. The source speculates that larger app developers could get preferential treatment in obtaining expedited approval.
The source also mentioned that developers will be able to select prices for their apps, so long as the price ends in 99 cents. So, for example, prices of $0.99, $1.99, and $99.99 are all acceptable. "Free" is also an option, as expected.
In related news, developers will be using iTunes Connect, familiar to bands and artists who sell their music through the iTunes Store, to monitor the financial performance of their apps. Additionally, Apple will withhold any payments until the developer's share of the sales reaches $250, or its regional currency equivalent. It is unclear what increments Apple will pay after that threshold is reached.
Developers can find out more information about submitting their apps from the "Program Portal" on Apple's secure developer website.

Переслать - Simplify media transcription with hotkeys and AppleScript
Filed under: How-tos, Productivity, AppleScript
I've found myself transcribing different types of media lately; primarily recorded Skype conversations and footage from interviews. I do a lot of work in Scrivener, an application so enjoyable that it makes me want to write a lot more than I do. Scrivener allows for a split pane editor with a QuickTime media file loaded in one pane, and your current document in the other. While you type you can hit Shift-Space to start and stop the media. I loved it, but I wanted to take it to another level. There are applications specifically designed for this, but why not have a system-wide, works-with-anything solution?
Find out how I did it after the jump.

Переслать - Found Footage: iPhone 2.0 Japanese keyboard demoed
Filed under: iPod Family, Software Update, Found Footage, iPhone, SDK
The software keyboard has set Apple up to ship more iPhones to more countries without wasting time manufacturing plastic keyboards. In this video, TokyoMango demos the new iPhone Japanese keyboard from the 2.0 firmware via the iPhone SDK simulator. While I cannot vouch for the usability of the keyboard (seeing as I haven't used it, nor do I know Japanese), I can say that it looks very well designed and refined.

Переслать - New Texas Apple Store set to open
Apple is about to open their 14th retail store in Texas -- San Antonio's second -- this Saturday, June 28th. Apple Store North Star is located in the North Star Mall, next to Ann Taylor. You can get full driving directions here. The doors open at 10:00 AM. Two stores is pretty good, San Antonio, but Houston still has you beat with three.
This store is pretty narrow at only 34 feet wide. Aren't things supposed to be bigger in Texas?
