  • RIftVault - Spawn of Yojimbo and Delicious Library?

    RiftVault

A lot of my clients use Yojimbo to securely store their credit card numbers, passwords, and other information. I use it, too, but find it to be a somewhat drab application. On the other hand, Delicious Library is attractive and fun to use, but it isn't really something you'd want to use to store private info. If these two apps mated and had a love child, it would probably look and act a lot like RiftVault.

RiftVault is a new Leopard-only secure vault application from EdgeRift that is currently available in a pre-release version. It looks mahvelous and features 256-bit AES encryption to keep your private stuff from prying eyes. You can store credit card info, frequent flyer account data, passwords, insurance information, or short notes that you don't want to make public. Any document can be dragged into the Safe Deposit Box to be compressed and encrypted. Up to 2 GB of items can be stored in the Safe Deposit Box.

Sound interesting? Download RiftVault for free during the pre-release period, and/or pre-order the release version for $33 -- 33% off of the $49 retail price.

  • Flickr Find: WebKit references Mac OS X 10.6

WebKit, the open source foundation that many Mac apps use to draw HTML, seems to be preparing for some kind of operating system update in the near future.

Intrepid Flickr user factoryjoe posted an image of a screenshot showing a recent WebKit nightly build. In the Frameworks folder inside the application package, there's an alias named "10.6." The alias points to the "10.5" folder immediately above it.

What could this mean? Most likely, there's a new release of the operating system on the horizon, and WebKit developers are ready to get cracking on it. The fact that the file is a symbolic link and not an actual folder could suggest that development is either very early on at this point, or web services for the next Mac OS X are very similar to Leopard's.

    Thanks, Chris!

  • Meerkat: simplified SSH tunneling

I would wager that most of the people who know they need an SSH tunnel also know the Terminal commands to make it happen. But if those people happen to be Mac users, it's quite likely they wouldn't be averse to having menu bar access, Growl integration, Bonjour capability and a nice GUI to handle their tunnels. And to those who just know they want secure browsing, email and other network activities but aren't SSH ninjas, such things might be even more attractive.

Code Sorcery Workshop's Meerkat is a handy application that provides all of the above tools and offers setup wizards to provide the right settings for the particular tunnel you need. It turns setting up a quick SOCKS proxy for web browsing into a 2 minute task. Setting up a tunnel for Mail is just as simple. Whether you're already using tunnels or looking to get some protection while browsing at the coffeehouse, Meerkat may be able to help out.

You can try Meerkat out for free with a time-limited demo. If it should become something you can't (or don't want to) live without, you can register it for $19.95.

    Thanks, Mark!

  • .Mac mail down, speculations abound

If you're a .Mac mail user, then you probably know that .Mac's mail system has been down for almost 6 hours. According to the .Mac system status, 100% of users are experiencing the problems. Here's what Apple says:

100% of members might experience slower than normal response when using IMAP mail. Mail can be sent and received using .Mac webmail. Normal service will be restored ASAP.

This comes after .Mac has been rumored to undergo re-branding around the time of WWDC (which is next Monday).

Update (8:38p EST): Apple just updated the system status to report that some may not be able to access the .Mac welcome page. Stay tuned to TUAW for updates on the .Mac outage.

Update (9:37p EST): Apple is telling users that they can access the .Mac mail by using the webmail system; however, most users cannot access the entire .Mac website. We're currently experiencing a "504 Gateway Timeout" error when trying to load both the homepage and webmail. Looks as though the same services are down.

Update (10:40p EST): Some commenters are noting that they are now able to retrieve their .Mac mail. Apple has yet to update the .Mac system status.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • Ifbyphone promises "voice broadcast" app in the App Store

Well this is interesting -- apparently a company called Ifbyphone has announced that they will be releasing a "Voice Broadcast" app through the iPhone's App Store in June. The application will apparently let you "transmit" voice messages to multiple recipients, like sending a voice memo out to multiple people at a time.

The actual app isn't very impressive -- apparently a subscription will be required to use the service, and who knows how it works -- but the repercussions for the App Store might be interesting. What if someone releases a VOIP app through Apple's official store? What would AT&T have to say about that?

We still, even a week before WWDC, have no real idea exactly how the store is going to work and how a company or private developer will be able to get their programs on Apple's official listing, but it's conceivable that if a developer drops functionality that intersects with Apple or AT&T's profitability we could have a problem here. We'll have to watch and see if Ifbyphone's app shows up with all the functionality they claim.

  • Apple buys "mobileme.com" domain name?

TUAW is hearing that Apple recently acquired the domain name "mobileme.com." This domain name, would of course agree with the recent rumors of the .Mac re-branding to gain the "Mobile Me" name. However, the domain name is currently in the hands of Apple's registrar, Mark Monitor.

When you query the domain with a whois search, the following information is revealed about the domain name:

    Domain Name: MOBILEME.COM
    Registrar: MARKMONITOR INC.
    Whois Server: whois.markmonitor.com
    Referral URL: http://www.markmonitor.com
    Name Server: NS1.MARKMONITOR.COM
    Name Server: NS2.MARKMONITOR.COM
    Status: clientDeleteProhibited
    Status: clientTransferProhibited
    Status: clientUpdateProhibited
    Updated Date: 07-aug-2007
    Creation Date: 23-aug-2002
    Expiration Date: 23-aug-2009

This rumor comes after Apple recently bought the me.com domain name.

  • iClooly: make your iPod into a baby iMac

This is the cutest damned thing I've seen in a while. The iClooly, from Japanese manufacturer RockRidgeSound, is a stand for your iPod Touch that makes it look like a lil' baby iMac -- and, as a side effect, serves as an actual useful way to watch movies on your iPod Touch without having to get your greasy mitts all over it.

The iClooly even pivots 90º for landscape/portrait swapping goodness and has a dock connection inside. It'll be ¥4,980 (roughly $47) when it hits the streets June 7th.

  • Contactizer 3.6 Gains Leopard Goodness

    Filed under:

    Contactizer 3.6 Pro

Objective Decision released a free update to their oddly-named flagship product Contactizer. A powerful, Sync Services-savvy personal information manager (PIM) application, Contactizer 3.6 comes in Pro and Express flavors depending on your needs.

I used an earlier version of Contactizer last year and was impressed with its power, although I did run into issues with how it synced with iCal and Address Book. One of the best features from my viewpoint was the ability to track tasks throughout an entire project using the Project Manager mode (see screenshot above). Contactizer also did a great job of handling mail merges, and I found the way that it integrated email information into my contact list to be very helpful.

The update includes a Leopard-only Cover Flow mode that displays contacts as business cards, an improved sync system that works with multiple calendars, a quick entry panel for tasks, and a number of other user interface improvements.

Contactizer is a Universal Binary application which requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or better. You can download a 30-day free trial, or purchase Contactizer Pro for $119 (Express is $59.90).

  • Griffin PowerDock: quadruple your charging pleasure

Perennial iPod peripheral maker Griffin announced that their new PowerDock multiple-iPod / iPhone charging station would be available in June, and now it's apparently almost here.

Available in two- or four-dock models, the charging station is designed for nerdy families like mine with multiple iPods, or perhaps just gadget freaks. It supports most every flavor of iPod and iPhone, with adapter inserts included, and it's made of brushed metal which is always a lovely choice.

No word on a street date, but presumably it's still on schedule for a release this month. The two-dock version will run $49.99 and the four-dock version will be $69.99.

  • TUAW Review: RapidWeaver 4

Realmac Software has recently released the fourth major version of their RapidWeaver website creation software. RapidWeaver definitely gives a whole new meaning to "drag and drop," as you can create whole websites by dragging and dropping files onto RapidWeaver. As soon as the Realmac website was updated I downloaded the software so I could get a hands on review of version 4. We took a look at three different categories: features, user interface and usability.

    More after the break.

  • Found Footage: NSBasic on an iPhone

Let's face it - my development skills suck like an out-of-the-box Dyson vacuum! Back in prehistoric times when I was a Newton developer, I started by using the standard Newton dev tools but quickly learned that my programming skills were stuck in BASIC and Fortran 77. Pathetic, huh?

Fortunately, a small Canadian firm called NS Basic came out with a development kit based on BASIC that was easy to understand and use. Since then, George Henne and the NS Basic crew have kept up with the handheld world by creating dev tools for Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and (soon) Symbian, as well as providing the only remaining Newton development tool.

So what does this have to do with iPhone? NSBasic let us know about a video on their website that shows a small "Hello, World!" app and a stock quote application running on an iPhone. They're using NS Basic/Palm to write the applications, then running them in the experimental StyleTap Platform for iPhone and iPod Touch. While the apps look frighteningly like Palm OS apps, it's cool to see an easy and powerful set of dev tools that even beginners could use to write iPhone apps.

NS Basic is quick to point out that this is not a shipping product, nor do they have plans to port NS Basic to iPhone. Of course, perhaps a lot of interest in the video will convince them of the viability of the iPhone / iPod Touch market...

  • Sparkle 1.5b1

    Filed under:

There's a good chance our developer readers will be excited about the release of Sparkle 1.5b1. Among the new features you'll find support for .pkg installations and the ability to update non-.app files. Depending on your platforms, you'll also note the improved garbage collection support and 64-bit compatibility. Check the release notes for the full list.

If you provide software for the Mac community and you don't use Sparkle, consider it. It's a donationware framework which makes it easy to add auto-update functionality to your software. Because its parameters are all contained in the info.plist file, it's easy to maintain and upgrade. Among the hundreds of applications that make use of Sparkle, you'll find favorites like Coda, Miro, Adium, Transmission, Cocktail ... it's a long list. Check out the new release and give your users some auto-update love.

If all goes as planned, we'll be sitting down with Sparkle author Andy Matuschak for a chat at WWDC!

  • Rumor: Me.com bought by Apple?

Over the weekend, the rumor mills went crazy with reports that Apple had bought a new domain name from their registrar (Mark Monitor). The domain name in question: me.com, which would agree with previous reports of Apple re-branding their .Mac service as "Mobile Me."

As we reported earlier it seems Apple is re-launching their .Mac service as an Exchange style service that might even be moving onto other mobile platforms as well as other OSes (including Windows).

As an additional reconfirmation of this rumor, the same tipster that told TUAW first about the .Mac refresh contacted us again to say that the rumors are in fact true. This is still solidly in the rumor category, but it is certainly shaping up to be an interesting WWDC.
