- Fake Steve leaving Forbes for Newsweek
Filed under: Cult of Mac, Steve Jobs
Dan Lyons, the real Fake Steve Jobs, is leaving his editor's job at Forbes to join the staff of Newsweek, where he'll take over for outgoing columnist Steven Levy. (Levy left Newsweek for Wired in April.)
Lyons is leaving Forbes on good terms, with associate managing editor Bruce Upbin writing, "Saying we wish him well is an understatement." No details surrounding the financial aspects of the transition were immediately available.
Since Lyons owns the FSJ property himself, Silicon Alley Insider says he'll be bringing El Stevo with him, but it remains unclear what will change about the vast FSJ media empire.
Fake Steve, I honor the place where your funny and my bone become one. Namaste.

Переслать - Next VMware Fusion beta to offer Leopard Server virtualization
Filed under: Enterprise, Beta Beat
It's the Holy Grail of Mac virtualization: a Mac inside another computer, running happily on a virtual machine and subject to your every whim. Up until last fall, there was no framework in Apple's licensing to allow for Mac OS X virtualization; then the ground shifted and the heavens shook, and there was a way forward. Mac OS X Server is now eligible for virtualization on Apple hardware, so naturally both big Mac virtual machine players are eagerly pushing forward on this front.
Parallels is offering OS X Server virtualization as part of its Parallels Server high-end product, which is currently approaching the end of its beta; the gang at VMware, however, are going the route of integrating OS X Server virtualization into the consumer level Fusion product. VMware has announced that the next beta of Fusion 2 (and the eventual release) will include the option to virtualize Mac OS X Server. This is awesome news for anyone using Fusion now, as the upgrade to 2.0 is free for existing customers.
Of course, virtualizing Mac OS X Server is not an inexpensive proposition, as even a 10-user license of Server clocks in at a cool $499. For developers and corporate folk, however (many who would have access to volume or seeding licenses of Server), it's a great help. Video demo of VMware's new feature announcement after the jump.
Thanks Peter.Continue reading Next VMware Fusion beta to offer Leopard Server virtualization

Переслать - Get seasick with Liquid Mac
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
You know that sudden motion sensor that's buried in your Mac to protect your hard drive? Want to have a little fun with it? Then check out Liquid Mac, a neat little app that makes your laptop's screen look like it's filled with colored water.
Once you've downloaded the app, select the color and response sensitivity you want, then gently tilt your laptop and watch the fluid splash around the screen. It's oddly soothing, actually, unless you slosh it around too fast and make yourself nauseous.
When you tire of making waves, adjust the settings to represent beads and watch it rain on your screen. To see Liquid Mac in action, check out this cool video.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - iPhone dev program acceptance rate: 16%
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, iPhone
As Steve Jobs opened up the keynote on Monday, he threw out a few numbers which, frankly, went by me without really clicking until today. At 10:10, my live blog reads as such:
10:10. 25,000 applied to dev program. 4,000 admitted. 35% of the Fortune 500 has participated in the program. Working with Cisco for secure VPN. Push email, push contacts, push calendar, autodiscovery, global address lookup, remote wipe. iPhone 2.0 software is enterprise support, SDK, and new features
When you're liveblogging, these details tend to fly by -- without enough time to really process what you're typing. So it wasn't until this morning that it really hit me what this meant and it took a post by Rogue Amoeba's Paul Kafasis to make it sink in.
Read more about these numbers and my thoughts after the jump.

Переслать - WWDC '08: TheCodingMonkeys
Amongst my WWDC fumbles was the decision to conduct an interview in Yerba Buena park, adjacent to a main drag. At the time, it seemed like the best available option. Really. Martin and Dominik from TheCodingMonkeys (mentioned here on occasion) are the casualties of that blunder, but I managed to compress and EQ the sound enough to make the video work. It would have been a shame to miss out on these guys.
TheCodingMonkeys, seen here perched upon large rocks, have recently joined forces with Boinx to work on a joint project that is going to be very, very cool. More about that after the Boinx interview goes live. It seems that TheCodingMonkeys have a lot to keep mum about, but we get some hints about their upcoming iPhone projects and -- among other things -- assurance that SubEthaEdit will continue to develop. Video after the jump.

Переслать - Apple to sell iPhone 3G on college campuses?
Ars Technica is reporting that Apple has considered plans to sell the iPhone 3G directly on US college campuses. Some campuses do already sell Apple products in their on-campus stores; however, this varies by university.
If Apple marketed the phone directly to the students, this could definitely move Apple closer to the 18 million goal for 2008. Ars Technica also notes that a recent AppleInsider post speculates that a Best Buy deal could be in the works after the "old" iPhone's "grey-markets" put a hold on those plans. However, we know of one college that Apple probably won't be waiting in line to market their iPhone 3G to.

Переслать - Mac 101: Taking PhotoBooth pictures without flash, count-down
Filed under: Tips and tricks, TUAW Tips, Mac 101
We love the quick tips that Tekzilla brings everyday. The other day they showed off a tip that we just couldn't turn down spreading. When you're in PhotoBooth you can use two key combos to either turn off the flash or temporarily disable the count-down.
Hold down the shift key when you press the take picture button and your picture will be taken without using the flash. If you hold down the option key when you press the take picture button your picture will be taken without using the count-down delay. If you hold down both the shift and options keys, your picture will be taken immediately and without the flash.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - CodeMorphic offers global view toolkit for iPhone devs
CodeMorphic is offering a toolkit for iPhone app developers to display data using a real-time, manipulable globe.
They posted a video on their site, showing a possible application that displays composite satellite imagery, global temperatures, and a day/night terminator. Users can use standard multitouch gestures to zoom in and out, too.
The video just scratches the surface of what kind of data display apps are possible with the new iPhone SDK.
