  • Apple's worst logo ever?

I'm eager to test out Apple's upcoming MobileMe service, the .Mac replacement scheduled to launch in a few weeks. Unfortunately for many, my enthusiasm is matched by disdain for the MobileMe logo.

Gawker says "...it should be on a package of Japanese soap." Paul Thurrott notices a similarity between MobileMe and Microsoft WindowsME and Manhattan Offender asks flat-out: "Is 'MobileMe' the worst logo in the history of Mac?"

First of all, Manhattan Offender, Apple is the company that produced MobileMe and its graphic representation, not "Mac."

Remember, Apple is pushing this (get it?) as "Exchange for the rest of us." It's not a corporate product, but a consumer service with corporate-like features. We think the logo is airy and fun.

What's your take? Decent enough or utter garbage?

  • App Store available on June 27th?

During the keynote every time the App Store was mention people would say it was 'launching soon,' or that their apps would be 'available at launch.' No one mentioned a specific launch day. Apple might have let the cat out of the bag though. The image to the right was just snapped off of Apple's Australian iPod Touch page. It clearly stated that the App Store, and presumably the 2.0 firmware for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, will be available on June 27th. That contradicts the 'early July' timeline mentioned in the keynote.

I know I speak for all iPhone/iPod touch users when I say: we wouldn't mind getting this firmware a little early, Apple.

    Thanks, Samantha.

  • TomTom: Nav system "runs on the iPhone already"

    Filed under:

Reuters is reporting that TomTom, manufacturers of portable, consumer GPS devices, have got their service up and running for the iPhone. "Our navigation system runs on the iPhone already," said a TomTom spokesman this week.

At first glance, this seems like another vendor announcing that their product will be available for the iPhone, but it's much more. When it debuted last year, I said that it's really a computer that happens to make phone calls. That's only become more evident since. During Monday's keynote, Steve Jobs noted that 98% of iPhone owners are using it for mobile browsing and 80% are using 10 or more features.

I use mine for email, the web (especially Twitter) and as an iPod far more often than I do to make phone calls. In fact, it has replaced my 8GB nano which sits neglected on my desk. It serves as a handy stand-in for my MacBook Pro when I want to read and reply to mail, check RSS feeds, post to Twitter and so on.

Now it can run TomTom software, so there's three devices it has replaced. Who knows what other incredible applications await us on July 11th. It may sound like the ramblings of a star-struck fanboy to say that the iPhone will significantly change people's perception of what a portable device can do, but it's also entirely accurate.

  • Mac Automation: Using variables in Automator

Last week I showed you how to use Automator to make a workflow that took photos from your Mac with an iSight and sent them to your Apple TV. That how-to featured one way of using a variable in Automator to let the user name the photo themselves. In this week's Mac Automation post, I want to go into a little more detail on what variables are and what they can do for your Automator workflows.

  • Snow Leopard screenshots surface

Some of the first pictures of "Snow Leopard," Apple's next version of Mac OS X have started leaking off of developer's Macs. Orchard Spy has some of the very first screenshots, though nothing too exciting is shown.

Just as we suspected, Snow Leopard doesn't show any new features in the Applications or Utilities folders; nor does it show any changes in System Preferences. The only change that may lead to speculation is a new "32-bit" phrase in the System Preferences Title Bar.

The build number of Snow Leopard is 10A96.

    Thanks, Guillermo!

  • Apple seeds developers with Safari 4.0

Apple has seeded developers with a copy of the new Safari 4, which adds some new features and is based on a newer version of WebKit. Apple is also rumored to be using the SquirrelFish JavaScript engine which allows for faster Javascript processing.

New to this version of Safari is the ability to save webpages as "Web Applications." This new feature allows Safari to save pages similar to the way Fluid does. You also have the ability to choose how new windows will open (i.e. with your favorite bookmark, blank page, etc.).

One of the biggest "features" is the fact that Safari 4 (along with the new version of WebKit) scored a perfect 100/100 on the Acid3 test. If you are inclined to see what the new version looks like, World of Apple has placed some screen grabs on their blog for your viewing pleasure.

  • List of cities that are in AT&T's 3G coverage

That fancy iPhone 3G won't feel much speedier than your first gen iPhone if you aren't in an area that is covered by AT&T's high-speed 3G network. Luckily, AT&T has a list of cities (yes, if you're not in a metropolitan area chances are you'll be using EDGE more often than not) that have 3G coverage.

AT&T doesn't offer up a map of the US with their 3G coverage highlighted, so I took the liberty of using their 'Coverage Viewer' and my copy of Acorn to whip up a full US map with AT&T's 3G coverage in deep blue. Check it out here (the map isn't perfect, I know, but it does give you a good idea of the extent of AT&T's 3G network).

Update: I've added another map that only shows AT&T's data coverage. 3G is the deepest blue, while EDGE is slightly lighter (and more widespread).

  • Steve Jobs has a 'common bug'

Normally I wouldn't even post about this, but several people have commented on the way Steve Jobs looked during his keynote yesterday. Most folks seemed to think that he looked a little thinner than usual, which of course makes one think back to his battle with cancer. An Apple PR person assured the Wall Street Journal that Steve has been fighting a 'common bug' for the last few weeks, and he is on the mend.

Everyone here at TUAW hopes Steve feels better soon! We should probably send him an iCard before they go away.

  • AT&T to penalize iPhones not activated within 30 days

    Filed under:

The iPhone 3G activation saga is quite confusing. Most people think that Apple and AT&T will require iPhone activations on the spot, thereby cutting into a big part of the unlocked iPhone phenomenon. However, this AP report suggests that there will be a way for people to get unactivated iPhones, the only catch being AT&T will slap a penalty on you if you don't activate your iPhone within 30 days. The amount of the penalty, or how AT&T will even know who you are since your iPhone wasn't activated, is unclear.

Let's hope that all this confusion clears up a little closer to the iPhone 3G's release.

    Thanks, Daniel.

  • TUAW predicts WWDC '08: How did we do?

The dust has settled from the stampede of announcements from yesterday's WWDC Keynote so it's time to take a look back at our predictions and see how we did!

First, let's take a look at what was released at this year's WWDC:
    Let's see what we predicted:
    • .Mac rebranding (with support for iPhone/PC)
    • iPhone 3G
    • Mac OS X 10.6 seeded
    • iTablet
    • Mac nano
    • Flash on the iPhone
    • Video on the iPhone
    • Enterprise solutions for iPhone
    • Over-the-Air syncing for "MobileMe"
    • Redesigned MacBook Pro
    • iPhone 2.0 delayed / ship date
    So, how did we do?
Many of the things we predicted did actually come true (to our amazement!). We are extremely pleased with our predictions this year as we guessed everything that was released. All in all, we were 54.5% (6 right, 5 wrong) correct with our predictions. But we were spot on with the .Mac rebranding ("MobileMe"), 10.6 "Snow Leopard" preview, and the iPhone 3G / iPhone 2.0 announcement / delayed release.

  • Found Footage: Steve Jobs interview on CNBC

After all the excitement and iPhone-ness of yesterday's Keynote, Steve sat down with Jim Goldman of CNBC to talk iPhone. Goldman asked Steve about the conspicious lack of an iPhone intro date for both Russia and China, which are pretty big markets. Steve says that we should look for some announcements later this year on those fronts.

Goldman also asked why Wall Street has such a love/hate relationship with Apple. Steve responding by noting that Apple has had record quarter after record quarter, and Wall Street usually comes out at the right place.

    Thanks, John.

  • Analyst: Apple on track to sell 18m 3G iPhones this year

Jenny Lai, an analyst at CLSA Emerging Markets wrote in a report that Apple could sell as many as 18 million new iPhones this year. Lai covers news surrounding Hon Hai Precision Industry, Apple's iPhone manufacturing partner in China.

"The higher expectation on the 3G iPhone reflects attractive prices and a broader distribution channel (availability [in about] 70 countries)," she wrote.

Considering the year will be more than half over when the new iPhones are available in stores, this is (in my opinion) a pretty aggressive six-month target. (I'm no financial analyst, though.) According to a Dow Jones interview, six million iPhones have been sold since their introduction last year.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster agrees, saying that 12 million units this year "now looks like a lay-up." For 2009, Munster projects Apple could sell 45 million handsets. Compare that to the popular Motorola RAZR, which has sold 50 million units since 2005.

  • (Not) Faked photos of 3G iPhone

3GiPhone - The REAL photoThe folks at iLounge provided us with a link to real photos of a 3G iPhone body, along with commentary on the new design. It's refreshing to finally see actual photos of the new iPhone instead of badly Photoshopped mockups.

One close-up of the back of the black 3G iPhone shows that the material being used for the shell picks up very visible smudges and fingerprints, with the suggestion from Jeremy Horwitz that this may end up making the white model much more popular.

The iLounge article speculates that a Product (RED) 3G iPhone may be available in late 2008 or early 2009. If you're wondering if your current iPhone case or accessories will work with the the new device, Horwitz feels that products that are designed to work for either existing iPhones or iPod Touch should be fine. However, docks, cases, and other accessories that were designed only for the first generation iPhone will not work.

I, for one, am happy to see that Apple is making sure the iPhone / iPod economy continues to thrive!

  • OmniFocus for iPhone will be location-aware

Guy-I-wish-was-my-friend Merlin Mann writes at 43 Folders about OmniFocus for iPhone, a project he's involved with. Perhaps the most exciting new feature is the fact that OmniFocus will be location-aware.

OmniGroup says that by "using your location, OmniFocus can create a custom list of actions to complete nearby. Buying groceries? OmniFocus can show you the closest grocery store and create an instant shopping list."

Pretty sweet. OmniGroup expects that OmniFocus for iPhone will be available via the App Store around the launch date in early July.

  • Iconfactory prepares Twitterrific for the App Store

Our favorite little blue bird has been getting a lot of attention on the Apple site, thanks to its upcoming appearance in the new iPhone/iPod App Store. In their blog, Gedeon Maheux of the Iconfactory talks about the native version of Twitterrific for iPhone and iPod touch.

"We feel both excited and privileged to be a part of the new App Store and are committed to bringing our users the best software we can offer," he writes.

According to Ged, the pricing displayed on the site is "for position only": meaning no decisions have been made about pricing yet. Also, expect Twitterrific to work across EDGE, 3G, and WiFi networks.

In related news, Twitter survived the onslaught of WWDC! Hooray! A short service interruption in their data center caught them off guard, but otherwise they were up for 97.3 percent of the day. Twitter received an order of magnitude more traffic yesterday than they do normally.

  • iPhone upgrade breakdown

There seems to be some confusion surrounding the leaked AT&T policy documents that Gizmodo obtained earlier today. Because AT&T may be selling unsubsidized phones (though please note that it appears that even unsubsidized phones will have to be activated with an AT&T voice and data plan in-store), existing AT&T customers are understandably confused about their upgrade options.

Assuming that the memo is real and that AT&T's policy won't change between now and July 11, this is the situation:

If you are a current AT&T customer and you have a 2G iPhone

Take a deep breath, you can get the new iPhone 3G for the new lower price (starting at $199.99), as long as you sign a new two-year contract and add-on one of the new required data plans.

To quote from the AT&T memo:
When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch).

So if you bought an iPhone in June of last year -- you can upgrade to the new 3G phone. If you bought an iPhone in May (maybe you were the last person in your city to buy one), you can still upgrade at the lower price.

If you are a current AT&T customer and you do NOT have a 2G iPhone

You may or may not be eligible to buy the iPhone 3G at its lower price upon release. It depends on the length of your contract, the time of your last handset upgrade and anything else that weighs into AT&T's standard upgrade policy. The pricing for non-qualified upgrades has not been determined, but phones will still need to be activated in-store and with a data-plan and two-year contract.

If you are a new AT&T customer

Assuming you pass the credit check (Pre-Paid and Pick-Your-Plan are not eligible for the iPhone 3G), you can get the iPhone 3G for the new lower price. You will be required to sign up for a two-year contract and a voice and data plan.

    Cancellation policy spelled-out

    From the AT&T memo:
To cancel service within the first 30 days, the customer must return their equipment to the place of purchase (no exceptions). If the customer cancels service after 30 days, they will be charged the ETF. The customer is not required to return the device to cancel after 30 days.

So you have 30-days to return your iPhone 3G and your service will be cancelled as soon as you return the device. After 30 days, you can keep your phone but canceling service will mean you are responsible for the the ETF (early termination fee), which is usually several hundred dollars.

  • Canada might be getting the iPhone 3G

    Filed under:

Our Canadian readers have suffered a long, iPhone-less time. There are been countless rumors that Rogers, Canada's leading cell phone provider, would be releasing the iPhone 'any day now.' The above graphic from Rogers' website mentions that someting 'really big' will be coming on July 11th. Hmm, that date looks familiar... what else is happening on that date? Ah, right, the international launch of the iPhone 3G.

Canadians, looks like you'll soon be able to join in on the iPhone fun.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

    Update:
Rogers might be playing coy, but Apple released a press release letting us know what is happening on the 11th in Canada. In the rush of news yesterday, I overlooked this. Thanks, bob.
