  • "Leaked" iPhone images show video chatting, slimmer iPhone?

Late last night, several rumor websites, including CrunchGear, reported that they had received copies of "leaked" iPhone advertisements. These ads depict matte black and Product (Red) iPhones. Most of the sites that were sent these images are calling them fakes, including our own Engadget.

There are two major flaws that stick out in these images, the first of which is the lack of a sleep/wake button on the red iPhone in the image above. The second of which: where the iChat details are shown, the requirements state "Windows Xp." However, Apple always states "XP" as just that; not upper case, then lower case letters.

We do have to agree with Engadget when it comes to the video chat images. Ryan Block states, "No Apple design would be laid out the way this guy's got his page laid out here." We have to agree -- Apple designs are normally clean and minimalist; not jumbled as these images are.

  • iToner 1.0.7 is available

    Filed under:

iToner by Ambrosia Software lets iPhone owners put an unlimited number of custom ringtones onto their phones with no hacks and no per-ringtone fees. We've written about iToner several times, and interviewed Ambrosia's president Andrew Welch about the future of the product.

This week, iToner 1.0.7 was made available. Changes include:
    • Fixes with iTunes compatibility. iToner should no longer prevent iTunes from removing iTMS ringtones.
    • Fixed crash when syncing with iPod touch from iTunes
    • Various fixes and enhancements
iToner allows for drag-and-drop ringtone sync, support for MP3, AAC, WAVE, and AIFF files and the ability to assign specific ringtones to certain contacts.

This is a free upgrade to registered users. iToner costs $15US, requires Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later, and is a Universal Binary application.

  • One more thing: A history

"But there is ... one more thing."

Those are the words that make Mac nerds' hearts flutter. Afterall, the original iMac, Mac OS X and the switch to Intel have all followed that simple phrase.

The Cult of Mac has produced a cool time line graphic depicting a history of products that have been featured as Steve's "one more thing." From the iMac on May 6, 1998 to the MacBook Air this past January, the graph features a decade of announcements. For added fun, you can click any one to watch a video clip.

Well done, Cult of Mac! Here's to hoping for an addition in the very near future.

  • Engadget posts details of iPhone 3G firmware

We're all eagerly awaiting what must be the worst kept secret ever in mobile technology announcements next week, but up until now some of the detailed features of the iPhone 3G have been subject to speculation and debate. Earlier tonight, Engadget posted a preliminary firmware spec of the next iPhone; it includes tri-band HSDPA for near-global high speed data coverage, and an A-GPS unit for the location awareness we crave.

Interestingly, the internal build number on the firmware is quoted as "n82ap" (as compared to the original iPhone's "m68ap" designation). Remember back in February, when Erica noted an "N82" platform indicator in the iPhone's supported platform list? Isn't that special.

  • Ambrosia teases new iPhone game

Are we the only ones unnaturally excited for the iPhone App Store? We don't know how distribution will work, but imagine great applications available from top-notch OS X developers at the touch of a finger. Bored in a waiting room? Try out a new game, buy it and play it right then and there. You know it's not a piece of junk because it's been approved for the store. We can't wait.

Ambrosia is teasing one of their future offerings this week with Aki Mobile Mahjong. It's a take on the ancient Chinese game that features cool graphics and nifty sound effects (check out the screenshots and game play video). Ambrosia notes that their aim is to create games that can be launched and quit quickly and easily (for instance, when that important call arrives).

Also interesting is this little tidbit: "Download additional custom levels via EDGE/Wi-Fi...." Cool!

  • Wingnuts Moto Racer for the iPhone

Our friends over at Freeverse have been working on a racing game (undoubtedly going to be one of a few released by different companies) for the iPhone called Wingnuts Moto Racer, but various NDAs, game mechanics secrets, and developer confidentialities have kept them from being able to talk about it too much, with us or anyone else. Still, demand has apparently pushed them to release something, and so they have posted this heavily-edited- with-red ink "review" of how the game plays.

It sure sounds like, as expected, you use the accelerometer to drive, and while their intern says that it controls beautifully, of course he'd say that -- he's their intern. The art looks good, though -- there's a highway at sunset, some Oriental and Forest style racing, and even a Miami-style tropical cityscape. Unfortunately, that's the extent of news here -- no idea how many tracks or vehicles there are, or if there are any other iPhone-specific innovations.

Not that the game still doesn't look like fun -- it does, and if you're a racing game fan, you'll definitely have plenty of games to choose from in the early days of the App Store. But NDAs aside, we'd sure like to hear something new about Freeverse's iPhone games.

  • iTunes Distribution: Ten bucks for one tune

    Filed under:

If you're an artist and have dreamed about selling through iTunes, TuneCore has a deal for you. For just ten bucks, you can deliver a single to 11 digital stores around the world. Participating stores include the US, Canadian, Japanese, Australian/NZ, and UK/European iTunes stores plus Rhapsody, Napster and a few others.

You keep 100% of the revenue generated and retain all rights to your masters. Your single is hosted at iTunes for one year. (Additional years cost the same $10/year.)

TuneCore automatically issues payments into your account when they're received from each store. The time of receipt varies by store, each has their own policy, which you can read about in TuneCore's FAQ.

You can check into your account at any time and cash out any earnings on demand. Be aware that although it only takes about 6 hours to submit your music to iTunes, on average it takes about 4 weeks for it to actually appear on the iTunes "shelf". This delay can occasionally go as long as 8 weeks, so if you want to sell a Christmas single, you'll probably want to submit it by the end of the summer just to be sure. Update: TuneCore has advised that this new pricing is active as of June 20.

TUAW has previously posted about TuneCore.

  • App Store: Does "Free" mean junk?

Does "Free" mean junk? That's the question that this Apple Insider report has had me pondering this morning. According to AI, lucky companies are being assigned iPhone development partners who are encouraging developers to charge for rather than give away their wares. As Apple is due to receive 30% of all sales, they have a vested interest in encouraging commerce but I think the issue goes deeper.

To distribute widgets, you don't need to pay $99/year and you don't have to apply for a program. Apple has the experience of Installer.app to go by, where gems can quickly get lost among other people's "Hello World" applications. I think Apple wants to keep the signal quality high and the noise level low. Perhaps that's why they're pushing for paid serious apps rather than free frivolous ones.

    Thanks, Sam.

  • Apple releases official "Keynotes" podcast

When Steve Jobs delivers a keynote or other high-profile presentation, Apple typically posts a video of the event on the web and in iTunes (who else remembers when you would stream these things live? Those were the days).

This week they've given these videos an official home in the iTunes Store. The Apple Keynotes Podcast [link] features three videos so far, the MWSF '07 and '08 keynotes plus the March 6th introduction of the iPhone software road map.

Check back on the evening of Monday, June 9th or Tuesday the 10 to see if the WWDC '08 keynote has been made available.

  • Apple's new strategy for hiring retail employees

If you've ever been to an Apple store, then you know how friendly and helpful the staff are. If you are the friendly type of retail employee in the vicinity of an Apple store, be on the lookout for recruiters from the fruity company.

MacNN reports Apple recruiters have come up with a new strategy for hiring new employees -- just give friendly retail employees at other companies cards with the words "You're amazing. We should talk." on the front of them. On the back, the cards detail how the employee at XYZ company can become an employee for an Apple Store. This definitely helps with the hard work of hiring new Apple employees to fill the nearly 2,400 positions nationwide caused by the nearly 35-40 new stores opened each year.

  • TUAW Review: NEAT Receipts for Mac Advance Release

NEAT Receipts for Mac Advance ReleaseBe sure to enter our NEAT Receipts for Mac giveaway! See details at the end of the article.

A few weeks ago, the NEAT Receipts team announced an Advance Release of their receipt scanning and text recognition package for Mac. A few days later, FedEx delivered a small box containing the shipping product, and I've been feeding NEAT Receipts a steady diet of receipts and any other paper I can get my hands on ever since.

While the $179 Advance Release doesn't have the full functionality of the Windows version, such as a business card module or the ability to export receipt information to financial software, it is a very good first attempt at a Mac product. The scanner is a tiny piece of sculpture that can be easily carried along on business trips to capture expense information - it's that small and light.

As you have probably surmised, NEAT Receipts for Mac Advance Release is more than just a slim little scanner; it's also a powerful and adaptive piece of Mac software that performs intelligent optical character recognition and automates the process of moving receipt information from paper to digital format. Read on for the full review and be sure to check out the gallery below for photos and screenshots.

  • Apple megastore in Las Vegas CityCenter in 2009?

CityCenter is a massive new multi-use building project designed by architectural rock star Daniel Libeskind. It is currently under construction in Las Vegas, and -- according to AppleInsider -- the jewel in this glittering crown will be a supermassive Apple Store, located directly in the front of the complex right along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Quoting "people familiar with the project", AppleInsider claims that the store will boast over 20,000 feet of floor space on two levels. The article is accompanied by architectural renderings, though none of them feature any giant white apples or other clues as to the exact placement of the store.

The CityCenter project has been controversial in Las Vegas; six workers have died on the project since it began, and construction workers walked off the project last Monday after union safety negotiations with the general contractor failed, though they returned the next night. The project is due to be completed in the fall of 2009, at which point the new Apple megastore will join the two existing Apple Store locations on the Strip. (AppleInsider incorrectly states that there are three locations, but the third Apple Store in Nevada is actually in Reno, on the other side of the state.)

Speaking as a resident of Sin City, I'm not sure if CityCenter is going to be a beautiful hypermodern arcology to rival Tokyo's Roppongi Hills, or just another big ugly thing for drunken idiot turistas from the Midwest to throw up on. But if they're really putting a ginormous Apple Store front and center, I'll be out front on opening day with the rest of the rubes.

  • TUAW predicts WWDC '08

With WWDC right around the corner, the bloggers at TUAW have compiled a list of predictions for WWDC '08. While we are not sure what will be released, this is a fun list of what we think might be coming, or things that we really want. Be sure to voice your predictions in the comments, and by taking part in our poll.

    Steve Sande
I'll take ".Mac rebranding and expansion to iPhone and Windows, 3G iPhone, iTablet, and Mac nano" for $500, Alex!

    Robert Palmer
I think we might find out what the next "big cat name" will be for 10.6. [We're pretty sure we know what that'll be.] I think we'll start to see a development toolset for bringing all of Apple's devices together. Imagine a novice user being able to create a small app that runs on the iPhone, as a Dashboard widget, and maybe as a widget for some future Apple TV in one build. To do that, we need the next generation of Apple development tools. That's what we might begin to see at WWDC.

    Joshua Ellis
Flash on the iPhone, 3G, and I'd really love to see that iTablet and Mac nano action.

    Mike Schramm
We'll see 3G and new .Mac for sure, and I think we'll see some more official iPhone apps from Apple, in addition to everything else from the App Store. I don't think we'll see any other new hardware (a redesigned MBP may be in the cards, but an iTablet or Mac Nano is a no), but I do think we'll see a years-off glimpse of 10.6 -- with Leopard out and updated, Apple needs to start up some more OS hype.

    Chris Ullrich
iPhone 2.0 with 3G and video shooting capability. .Mac rebranding with new features similar to Google Apps and accessability to Windows users. iPhone 2.0 applications and some details on the next version of OSX code named "insert name of big cat here."

    Cory Bohon
We'll definitely see some .Mac rebranding going on, some new "mystery hardware," and a sneak peak at what's beneath the hood of Mac OS X 10.6. I don't think we will see the iPhone 2.0 firmware hitting the streets just yet, and I think that Mac OS X 10.5.4 might be right around the corner.

    Brett Terpstra
Enterprise solutions on the iPhone (I know, generic prediction). MBP update. Announcement that Apple was actually serious about using me.com, followed by a Keynote presentation with focus group study data indicating that it's actually a really, really good name.

    Michael Rose
Can't wait for the over-the-air sync of .Mac/MobileMe, and I don't even own an iPhone! I think we'll get a launch date for the App Store and an on-sale date for iPhone 2, but neither of them will be during the show. I think we'll see a 10.6 seed preview and the Mac Nano... and maybe, just maybe, the iPhoneBig.

    Scott McNulty
I'm with the crowd on the .Mac rebranding, and the 10.6 dog and pony show. We'll see (I think) iPhone 2.0, but what I'm really hoping for is a redesigned MacBook Pro. I'm about ready to replace mine, and I'd love to get one with a keyboard like the MacBook's.

    Now, it's your turn.
