- Jobs' Years in the Wilderness - NeXT
Filed under: OS, Steve Jobs, Blast From the Past
I'm always a sucker for interesting stories about the history of the Mac and I just ran across this fascinating account of Steve Jobs in the eleven years after he left (or was pushed out of) Apple and his triumphant return in 1996. It's an interesting story, well-told, and all of the characteristic Jobsian traits are on display, including and especially his quasi-maniacal perfectionism and demand for control. And of course since OS X is built on what was NeXTstep, it's also a kind of genealogy of our favorite operating system as well. Head over to Low End Mac for a very interesting read.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: OS, Software, Hacks, Productivity
Yet another slick tip I found while parsing my Mac OS X Hints feed is a fairly simple hack for setting the dock and menubar to auto-hide based on which app is in the foreground. This can come in very handy if you usually like to see these elements, but often work in screen-hungry apps that can't auto-hide them on their own. I'm even interested in trying this on Photoshop, which can hide the dock and menubar, but only when in full screen mode (which I don't often like to use).
The tip essentially involves using something like the Property List Editor (a free app included in Apple's Developer Tools) or Pref Setter to copy and paste two short lines of code into an application's info.plist file. The hint contains everything you need to hack away, including a hint from The Rob himself which I'd like to echo: definitely make a backup of the app, or at least the info.plist file, before you copy and paste your way into a problem. That said, enjoy having the best of both worlds.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Tips and tricks, Internet Tools
If you're familiar with Quicksilver's ability to send email without ever having to touch an actual message, this hint might not be too groundbreaking for you. However, if you're looking for a way to easily send SMS messages and/or still looking for good examples of Quicksilver's far-reaching power, this might be right up your alley: Mac OS X Hints has a short tip on how you can use Quicksilver to send SMS via the Apple Mail plugin (note: Mail.app isn't actually needed when using this method; the plugin simply calls a Mail.app-related service to do the sending). All you need is the recipient's phone number and their network's email gateway, such as XXXXXXXXXX@cingularme.com (at least in the US; I'm unfamiliar with how texting like this works in other countries), and you're all set. The hint goes even further by recommending you simply enter these addresses into your contact's Address Book cards as actual email addresses. Then you can simply call up their entries from Quicksilver (via its Address Book plugin) instead of having to remember and manually enter them each time you get your SMS on.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports that shares of the Digital Music Group rose about 7 percent yesterday after they filed documents that revealed a three-year deal with Apple's iTunes. According to the Business Journal article, the company acquires the digital rights to music and video and resells their content to stores like iTunes, Napster, Wal-Mart Music and so forth.
Digital Music Group, if you were not aware, owns classic TV shows like "Hopalong Cassidy" and "My Favorite Martian", a show I remember with great fondness growing up but not one I think that I'd actually pay to watch again.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Website Cyboid.com claims to offer a first-person 3D iPod shooter game. "Cyboid is a high-speed, full 3D, first-person shooter that runs on iPod, mobile phones and GBA," they write on the YouTube video description page. "We're a tiny startup (as in two people here!) that developed a game called Cyboid 3D over the past few years." There's no description yet on how the product was developed, what tools were used or how they reverse engineered the process--which are, of course, the really interesting questions in this case beside the obvious "Is this real?"
Of course, if real, I can't wait to play it!

When my colleague Scott walked by this morning and told me he heard a rumor via Jim Cramer that AT&T was going to provide 18 months of free cell service to iPhone buyers to encourage switching from Verizon, I'll admit that I didn't take it that seriously. Perhaps I should have had more faith. Now being reported widely, Cramer mentioned on his radio show yesterday that in an AT&T analysts call the company very clearly stated its intent to offer iPhone "customers" the 18-month service credit; it's not clear if this would be ALL customers, or just those with an existing Verizon Wireless account.
There's always the possibility that Cramer is talking out of a non-standard anatomical area, and this could be pure rumor (he's got another story on the AT&T situation here). Laurie has also pointed out to me that Verizon customers are the least likely to switch because of the reasons they became Verizon customers in the first place; coverage, EVDO, corporate standard, and voice quality. Even so, for those paying their own way, a year and a half of free service might sweeten the lure of a shiny new iPhone.
Thanks Scott!

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes
Valentine's Day is approaching fast. Roses are red. Violets are blue. Here are are some Valentines ideas, from us here at TU...aw.
Engrave it. I'd stick with "To my lovely partner" over "Be mine, forever", because it might not be clear if you're talking about your partner or to your iPod.
Gift a love song. Gift cards, schmift cards. You can gift a song whose lyrics really communicate that special message you want to send. Just try to avoid any song with "Disco" in the title.
Load a video message onto your iPod. iMovie and iSight combine for a great way to say "I Love You" on your favorite gadget.
Buy MiniGolf for your iPod. Because pass and play can be romantic and fun.
Create a surprise playlist. Yes, you may already be sharing iTunes libraries, so why not leave a special little surprise for that certain somebody? Build a playlist that you know that she or he will love.
