- 180s Tec Stretch headphones
It is very cool here in Philadelphia, which is how it should be in the winter. If you are in a wintry place at the moment (or plan to be) and you enjoy keeping your ears warm and listening to your iPod then 180s has the product for you.
Behold the 180s Tec Stretch ear protectors (don't call them ear muffs)/headphones. The cord is removable so you can protect your ear when not listening to your iPod. They can be found online for around $20, and would make a lovely gift.

So what's really inside your iPod? This video gives you the answer. All you you need is a putty knife (or reasonable equivalent thereof) and a willingness to completely destroy your property if things go wrong. (Unless, of course, that guy who works at the desk next to yours leaves his iPod out again--you're probably completely justified in assuming that he's volunteering it for exploratory surgery.) Fortunately, the young woman in the video manages to restore her iPod to its previous working state (or so it would seem) without incident.

Apple has posted the Setup Guide and the Designing AirPort Extreme 802.11n Networks manual for the new Airport Extremes. The documents also contain the first publicly available screenshots of the new version of the Airport Admin Utility (if you want to setup an 802.11n network you'll need the new Admin tool). I have taken the liberty of collecting some of the screenshots from the document and posting them in a gallery, so you can get a taste of what to look forward to.
Sadly, the most interesting new feature (Disk sharing) isn't shown in the screenshots.

With Valentines Day around the corner, here's yet a TUAW gift idea for your special someone: iPod lingerie. For only $24, add a little spice to your someone's iPod and get into that Valentine's mood. Or if you don't have a special someone in your life, you can just dress up your iPod for the fun of it. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Kevin Hoffman of DotnetAddict talks about his attendance at the recent New York City Apple tech talk. As the site name indicates, Hoffman is a Windows .NET developer so he has a fascinating take on the subject--especially his wowed reaction to OS X features such as Quartz Composer and core Animation. Being under NDA, he does not reveal specific Leopard details, but it's nice to see a Windows guy start to fall in love. You don't have to be under a "reality distortion field" to appreciate the technical advances of OS X.

I love my mother, which is why I gave her my old G5 iMac (the last of the G5 iMacs) but she isn't really all that tech savvy. To her credit she has gotten much better with surfing the web, and doing email but if a problem crops up on her iMac (which is rare, but it does happen) she calls her own personal tech support agent: me.
I'm not the only person who knows the joys of trying to talk a frustrated parent through some troubleshooting technique. I have often thought about installing VNC, or Apple Remote Desktop on her machine, but I she lives in VA and I live in PA. When I visit her I want to spend time talking and not fiddling with her computer so I can make sure I'll be able to connect remotely when needed.
Enter Copilot, the Fog Creek online 'assistive service' that allows you to connect to a remote computer using a small app and a website. Copilot 2.0 now supports OS X 10.2, and later, as well as both Safari and Firefox. No configuration is required, and the pricing structure is very interesting. 5 bucks will get you 24 hours of unlimited access, and if you find yourself using Copilot more than that there are subscription plans available that should suit your needs.
You can read more about Copilot at this post on Joel On Software, and to get a glimpse into the Mac dev side of things check out this post on Red Sweater blog.
Next time my mom runs into a problem I know who my copilot will be (see what I did there?).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: OS, Rumors, Software, WWDC
Take this with a grain of sodium chloride, but AI is reporting that "people familiar with conference planning" have tipped them off to the dates of this year's World Wide Developers Conference. These "people" call June 10th - 15th for WWDC 2007, nearly two full months before last year's knocked-back WWDC, which took place on August 7th, 2006 (delayed, presumably, to make way for the release of the Mac Pro). Even though many folks, including students such as myself, typically consider June to fall under the Summer category, these dates are still technically Spring, which is fueling speculation that Leopard could possibly land on June 10th - the first day of WWDC where Steve Jobs has traditionally done the keynote thing.
AI also speculates that iLife and iWork updates could also depend heavily on Leopard technologies, which means we might not see even these software packages until WWDC also. However, they did respond with a coy "stay tuned!" when asked about these updates in their recent Q1 2007 financial results that we liveblogged, so... uh, stay tuned!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
