- Volume Logic for iTunes 7 goes UB beta
Filed under: Audio, iTunes, Universal Binary, Beta Beat
I'm an iTunes user of simple tastes. There are only two plugins that I've stuck with over time: the delightfully trippy G-Force visualizer (gone nagware in the current version, but worth the $20 to upgrade) and the dynamic audio booster Volume Logic from Plantronics. With VL, if I wanted to listen to podcasts in the car, I was able to skip the static-filled search for an open iTrip station and just jack up the PowerBook speakers to audible levels.
Unfortunately, VL had not been updated for the Intel transition or for iTunes 7, leaving me out in the cold and the quiet on my MacBook Pro... until now. The beta of VL for iTunes 7 is available (signup required), and it's chock full of Universal Binary goodness. Once released, it'll cost $20 for new licenses, $10 for previous owners who bought before 5/1/2006, and free for anyone who bought after that. Participants in the beta will get $5 off new licenses to boot.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Odds and ends, Internet Tools, Widget Watch
The web just keeps showing its love for Twitter, the new social service that asks the simple question: "what are you doing?" The service has exploded recently, capturing users from all around including Leo Laporte, Darth Vader and even your favorite Apple blog! Naturally, when a site becomes this infectious, plenty of add-ons, scripts, apps and widgets are sure to crop up, and Twitterlex by Brett Taylor is yet another Twitter related product.
Like Twitgit which we previously mentioned, Twitterlex displays the latest updates from your friends, and allows you to post your own. Of all the widgets (and apps) I've seen so far, Twitterlex has the best UI in terms of a sleek, compact interface that lets you see your friends' updates as they happen. Sure, Twitterific from the Icon Factory has the sexy transparent smoke thing going on, but I love having everyone's names and updates displayed without having to manually scroll through a list.
Still, to each their own, and thanks to the Twitter Fan Wiki and an enthusiastic community that seems to be growing exponentially, you each have no shortage of options for playing with Twitter.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Odds and ends, Apple
Brandchannel.com just released the results of their latest world-wide survey of brands. The survey purports to measure how much "impact" a brand has on readers (which can, in principle be either good or bad). Mirroring the results from last year, leading the way globally was Google with Apple right behind. In North America alone, Apple was on top.
I suspect that Apple is doing even better today than the survey suggests since it was taken in November and December before the iPhone announcement (and all the attendant media coverage). I have little doubt that 2007 will be an even better year for Apple, Inc.'s brand identity given the iPhone excitement, the Leopard launch, and whatever SuperBowl Surprise awaits us.

It's front-page news today in the NYT and elsewhere: transistor jockeys at Intel will be the first to market with processors based on a 45-nanometer process, dramatically boosting performance and/or lowering power requirements for the new devices compared with the current 65nm parts. With the use of "high-k gate dielectrics" made with hafnium metal, Intel is implementing the biggest improvement in fundamental semiconductor technology in 40 years, according to company co-founder Gordon Moore (long retired, but sending in his two cents from Hawaii).
Intel is building two entirely new fabrication facilities to build the new process chips, in Arizona (up and running midyear) and Israel (early 2008). Of course, the part of this news we care most about 'round here: the new chips, codenamed "Penryn," are already running Mac OS X in the lab, will most likely be completely compatible with the existing Core 2 processors (with the addition of SSE4), and Intel expects a double-digit performance boost for media applications. Now that's what I'm talking about.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
