- Resize photos within Mail
Here's a nifty tip from Apple that I was completely unaware of. Whenever I email a photo, I do so via iPhoto, which takes care of resizing for me.
Apparently you can resize photos that you drop into Mail messages from the Finder just as easily. Once you've got the photo into the body of your message, a drop down menu will appear in the window's lower right hand corner. Click it to reveal several options: Small, Medium, Large and Full Size. Make your selection and your image is resized for you.
Perhaps you've been doing this for ages now, but as someone who uses iPhoto for this procedure, it was news to me.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Are you paying attention, Greenpeace?
Blogger Chiggs at Torents examines the iTunes Store's impact on the environment, and it's a favorable one. The production of a single CD results in aluminum, nickel, dyes, polycarbonates and more. At this month's Macworld Expo, Steve Jobs announced that the iTunes Store had sold 2 billion songs. At an average of 12 tracks per disc, Chiggs figures, that's the equivalent of 166 million CDs worth of those dangerous materials. What's more, that many CDs would cover 1,050 miles when laid flat. That's quite a chunk of landfill.
He also considers the results of transporting all of those CDs by truck. It's certainly a good article, and worth your time. So buy your music from the iTunes store...and save a tree, hippie.

Disco, the media burning application that people either love or despise, will finally be released as version 1.0 in just over a week. An official countdown timer has been added to the developer's blog to help you keep track.
I've used Disco and I've got no major complaints. Sure, I could just use Toast, but Disco is less expensive. Plus, I like the database feature. As of this writing, the introductory price of $14.95US is still available. Disco requires Mac OS 10.4.3 or better.
Thanks, Gerardo.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Did you ever notice, back in those 1950s & '60s "In The Future" news segments and featurettes, that nobody ever said "In the future, you'll be able to make free calls to anyone in the world, using your computer?" Probably because those shows were all sponsored by Ma Bell.
Our 2nd-favorite multimedia chat tool (and #1 disruptive technology) Skype for Mac 2.5 is out of beta today, addingfreeSMS messaging, 10-party chat and a new video codec to the usual slew of bug fixes. You can download it now and start chatting with all your far-flung friends; also, a reminder that today is also the last day for the discounted year of domestic calls SkypeOut deal. It's $14.95 through the end of 1/31, going up to $29.95 tomorrow.
Update: The SMS messages still require Skype Credit as before, apologies for the mixup.
Thanks Chaim!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
