- SpotlightFS: MacFUSE based Smart Folders
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Freeware
We've posted several times about the coolness that is MacFUSE from the Mac group over at Google. Well now comes yet another cool application of the basic technology: SpotlightFS which unites Spotlight and MacFUSE to create genuine smart folders, whose content changes based on search criteria. Unlike OS X's built-in Smart Folders which "are really plist files with a .savedSearch file extension," SpotlightFS produces true folders which "can be used from anywhere--including the command line." Given the recent resurgence of interest in Smart Folders, this looks like an even better way to do it.
SpotlightFS is a free download from Google and requires MacFUSE.

Filed under: Humor, Multimedia, Odds and ends
As you probably know there's a format war going on right now to be the high-definition successor to DVD between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Like many computer makers, Apple has thrown their lot in with Blu-ray, primarily because of its higher disc capacity (at least in each format's initial form), but has yet to ship a Mac with a Blu-ray drive. Fortunately, MCE is now offering an internal EIDE Blu-ray recordable drive for the Mac Pro or Power Mac G5 that supports both single-layer 25GB and dual-layer 50GB discs (as well as a variety of DVD and CD formats).
The future (well, unless HD-DVD wins) is yours today for only $699.00 and they even throw in a copy of Toast 8 Titanium so you can actually use the drive. Hopefully, a HD-DVD drive option will also be forthcoming, even if it's just for playing movies. It has been reported that the Mac can actually detect the XBox 360's USB external HD-DVD drive as a mere DVD drive, but no software yet exists to allow it to read HD-DVDs.

Filed under: Hardware, iPod Family, Odds and ends, Internet Tools
Here's something I've been wishing the Nikeplus.com site to implement itself: integration with Google Maps. Not ones to wait around for giant companies to switch on niche features, a small software company by the name of Gordian Labs has created the Runometer, a not-quite-even-beta mashup that lets you view and compare your Nike+ running data, as well as plot out your runs on Google Maps. By providing software and/or instructions for Mac OS X, Windows and even Linux, Nike+ owners can upload their run data, sketches of their routes or even GPS data for the ultimate in geek running goodness. A handy how-to guide is provided to help you get on your feet, but you'd better get moving - Runometer users have already ran over 1000 miles and plotted 284 routes!

Filed under: Macworld, Accessories, Audio, iPod Family
During my interview with Jeremy Horwitz, Editor of iLounge, I asked him what headphones he would recommend to replace the Apple supplied earbuds that come with an iPod. Without missing a beat he said the Er6is from Etymoic Research. I had to find out what made these headphones so good, so I headed over to the Etymotic booth on the showfloor and managed to get some time to talk with Mead Killion, Etymotic's President and founder. This man knows his sounds, and he knows how to make an awesome headphone.
We chat about the Er6i and the ety8 (the Bluetooth earphones). As always, if you like to enjoy these in Quicktime point your browser here.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: OS, Software, Odds and ends
We're all excited about Leopard, Apple's next major release of OS X. Steve has shown us some of the features, but Apple is keeping a pretty tight lid on everything that will be included in 10.5.
One of the features that made Steve's WWDC keynote is Stationery Templates in Mail. Basically, this makes it very easy to create snazzy HTML emails right within Mail. You can live preview templates, and drag and drop images from iPhoto. Tim Gaden points out that Apple, at some point, put up a little gallery with a bunch of the templates that will soon be unleashed upon the world.
I don't know about you, but HTML email is the bane of my existence. The first thing I do when I am configuring any email client is figure out how to convert all incoming emails to plain text. I might be a little extreme in my dislike of HTML emails, but I seriously hope that when Leopard is released I don't start receiving a deluge of HTML emails.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
