- UK bandwidth restrictions to affect Airport Extreme use
Filed under: Airport
Macworld UK reports that UK bandwidth restrictions may negatively impact Airport Extreme use in that country. Airport Extreme uses both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies to communicate. In the UK, Japan, Austria, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Slovakia and Spain, regulatory restrictions prohibit wide-channel operations, so Airport Extreme users won't be able to use part of the 5GHz frequency. Macworld's article suggests that this puts a limit of a 2.5x speed increase over 802.11g rather than the 5x increase that's achievable by using the entire 5GHz frequency with 802.11n. It's hard to say how noticeable this will be in practice or whether users will be able to "work around" these restrictions. Anyone with better knowledge about how channel operations work and how wide-channel restrictions will affect performance, please jump in in the comments.

Filed under: Humor, Cult of Mac
TUAW reader Bernard found this Hymn Book iPod case via Aquire, the "gear guide for men". I'm guessing that the idea behind it is to create a pious fascade as you're watching game highlights during worship services. I don't mean to be the wet rag and destroy anyone's fun, but you can still see the white earbuds even when using this camouflage device. They're kind of a giveaway. Unfortunately, the post did not give the name of a manufacturer or any cost or ordering information. The cover has no connection as far as I can tell to the anti-DRM Hymn project.

I'm generally not that wild about posting on pure rumors, but some interesting things came together today on the so-called Thin MacBook front. There has been much speculation that Apple is going to release some kind of ultra-portable MacBook to succeed the discontinued 12" PowerBook. In a rumor that has been making the rounds today, Apple Recon claims a number of details on a 12" MacBook at ~3.5 lbs; as always take this with a grain of salt. However, Unwired View scored a bit of a coup with hard information on 2 Apple patent filings concerning bottom-loading optical drives that would be located underneath the computer (AppleInsider had a similar story). We already know that Steve Jobs likes to insist on an optical drive in every Mac notebook, so this new design may be important in making a Mac sub-notebook possible.
If you take these two things together, perhaps that gives us some hope for WWDC in June, which is when Apple Recon claims the Thin MacBook will debut.

When did Newegg start selling "recertified" iPods? At decent (but not great) prices, too. 30GB 5G iPod videos (both black and white models) are just two hundred bucks. At the Apple Store, to contrast, certified refurbished 30GB 5G iPod videos sell for $180, saving you a
sawtoothsawbuck and including shipping, 90 days support and a one-year limited warranty.According to the site, "Factory Serviced and Recertified products are items which have been returned to an authorized factory repair facility for testing, inspection, and repair, or which have been repaired by certified technicians. All factory service products carry the applicable manufacturer's warranty and Newegg's 15-day return policy."
I'm not sure I totally grok the difference between certified refurbished and recertification, but I suspect they're more or less the same thing.

Filed under: Odds and ends, Macbook Pro, MacBook
Yesterday was apparently swanky leather MacBook case day as two separate makers released new models. Vaja has long been known for rather expensive, but very finely crafted mobile phone/PDA cases. They are now apparently moving into the notebook case world and are offering the classic Jacket (from $120) for the MacBook and MacBook Pro (15 & 17). It's a leather sleeve-case, but like Vaja's previous cases looks to be very sumptuously made.
On a separate note, Case-mate is releasing the signature suits (pictured, $150), which are "form-fit leather wraps for your MacBook and MacBook Pro." Unlike the classic Jacket, the suits are designed to remain on the MacBook (Pro) during normal usage.
So if you've ever felt the need to wrap your high-tech MacBook (Pro) in fine, hand-crafted animal carcass, now is a great time!
