- Mac Users Can Now Apply for US Government Grants
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
Needless to say, stories of government incompetence are hardly new, but it seems particularly galling that when the federal government first set up the centralized Grants.gov website for grant applications back in 2005, it did not support Macs. It required a proprietary client, which was PC only. Now MacResearch is reporting that Uncle Sam has finally shaped up enough to offer a Mac PureEdge Viewer client (which comes in both PPC and Intel flavors). Given how many scientific Mac users there are, this is definitely good news for scientists, and I suppose getting this done in only 2 years is lightning speed by government standards.

Filed under: Macworld, Accessories, iPod Family, Bluetooth
Computerworld has an article up on some interesting products from Macworld that were potentially missed in the iPhone hoopla. Perhaps the most interesting of them is the hookup from Lenntek ($170). It is a two piece solution for integrating your iPod and Bluetooth phone. It features a transmitter that fits onto the Dock connector of your iPod and a wireless iPod remote into which you plug your own headphones. You pair your phone with the remote and then use it to listen to (and control) your iPod, but then when the phone rings, a press of a button will stop the music and connect the call. There is a microphone built into the remote so you can take your call and when it's finished you can get back to your tunes. This is not the first product of this type, but it seems that the sound quality is not bad (at least according to one review), and it definitely is a slick looking little device.
In addition to the full-size hookup for the full-size iPod, Lenntek is also working on a lanyard model for use with the nano, but that one does not seem to be available yet.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The boys at BoingBoing stumble across so many wonderful things--and today they've topped themselves again. A Tardis-shaped USB hub. I want one. No, I need one.
Not just for me, but for my Mac. Because I'm unselfish like that. Call me a geek, call me a nerd, whatever. The Tardis-hub has 4 ports and it goes vwooorp-vwooorp when you plug in a device. Can technology get any better than that? I think not. It's theoretically for sale over at Firebox, but the page says it's currently unavailable. Nothing, of course, that a little space-time manipulation can't solve. If US purchasers don't mind ordering overseas, it's available at Amazon UK (for £14.99), Forbidden Planet, Play.com, and so forth.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Macworld, Features, Podcasts, TUAW Interview
At long last, my Macworld interview with Guy Kawasaki, for which you told us what to ask, is ready to go. Sitting down in the same room with The Guy[TM] during the week of Macworld 07 was quite the experience, and we had a good time chatting about the iPhone, where Apple is going as a company and more.
There's a catch with this podcast, however. Since many TUAW readers have expressed their interest in shorter podcasts, I chopped our interview down to just over 16 minutes. This means I have roughly an hour or so of chatting with Guy which I think is still interesting stuff. So, we decided to put a vote to you readers: after listening to what I put together here, do you want to hear the rest of the interview with Guy? We kept on chatting about the rest of the industry, why no one's buying software, evangelism and its place in business today... the guy really knows his stuff. If you're interested, leave a comment to let us know, and I'll publish a part 2.
But for now, enjoy TUAW Podcast #19 which weighs in at just over 15MB and 16 minutes. You can snag it from this direct link, our iTunes Store Podcast directory or our own podcast RSS feed. Enjoy.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MSN Money has a fascinating report on the reaction to Apple's unveiling of the iPhone at January's Macworld. If any event could be said to trigger a groundswell of grassroots reporting, it was the iPhone. In fact, the iPhone certainly set new records in that regard with a huge response of rich media--podcasts, photos, videos, hands-on reports and more.
According to the MSN article, the iPhone was mentioned by more blogs for the next 10 days than either McDonald's or George W. Bush. Wikipedia had an iPhone entry within minutes of Jobs' keynote speech. Nifty article, well worth a read.

Want to order an engraved iPod for Valentines day? Time's running out. To order a laser-engraved iPod to say that certain-something to your certain-someone, you better get your order in no later than the 6th of February.
Think of all the wonderful things you could say: "Be my Valentine", "I love you forever", or "Two months left until taxes are due". Whatever. Or you could look for inspiration at methodshop's list of rejected iPod engravings: "Not responsible for prolonged damage to the ear & brain", "Not to be used as a suppository", and "This iPod will self destruct in 1 year" were all supposedly denied by Apple. Of course, once it's engraved, it can't be returned--but neither can your heart.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/31/lead-time-for-ipod-engraving-grows-short/#comments - Mark/Space releases SyncTogether 1.0, the alternative to .Mac syncing
Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Mark/Space's has at last released SyncTogether, the spawn of their acquisition of MySync. SyncTogether fills the much sought-after void of application syncing on the Mac, a niche which Apple's .Mac currently has cornered. A $50 one-time purchase which covers up to 3 Macs will allow you to sync everything Apple's SyncServices (which .Mac uses) can, with a few additional perks. For example, instead of syncing your entire Address Book between two Macs, you could keep most of your contacts private by syncing only a specific group with family members. In contrast to Apple's $100 yearly subscription .Mac service (which, to their credit also offers email, web hosting and more), SyncTogether looks to be a powerful alternative for many who are only interested in this specific feature.
SyncTogether doesn't come without its disadvantages. First, if you own more than three Macs you want to sync, you'll need to purchase a second $50 license to cover those other machines. Also, SyncTogether uses a direct connection between Macs (even when you're out and about) to do the actual syncing, which is a double-edged sword: on one hand, the security nuts in the audience will likely have peace of mind knowing that their data isn't lying around on anyone's servers, but this also means that setting up SyncTogether isn't quite as "it just works" as Apple's .Mac. Lastly, and this is a major gripe many users have against Mark/Space's practices: SyncTogether doesn't have a demo. The company seems fond of forcing customers into paying up front to get their hands on the software, so all we can tell you is purchase at your own risk. Any readers care to share experiences in the comments?
At the end of the day, this .Mac customer is definitely interested in what SyncTogether has to offer, especially since I'm only on board these days for app syncing and the iDisk. Still, I think I'm going to have to wait until comments roll in from those more adventurous (and financially mobile) than I before making any leaps of Mark/Space faith.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
