  • Cyberduck 3.0b1 with WebDAV and S3 support

We recently noted the release of the new shareware FTP client Flow and now it seems that one of the more venerable open source FTP clients on the Mac is also nearing a new version release. The first beta of Cyberduck 3 is now available. Most importantly, it adds a substantially updated interface as well as support for WebDAV and Amazon S3.

Cyberduck 3.0b1 is a free download but donations are requested.

    Thanks Jesus!

  • AppleScript: Control your Mac with an e-mail

Have you ever been away from your Mac and wanted to shut down, restart, or needed to open an application remotely, but didn't have access to anything except your iPhone? Well, I am going to show you how to do these tasks with AppleScript and Mail.

This process is fairly easy and involves creating a simple AppleScript and some Mail rules. Note that since these rules will cause your Mac to perform the listed action when they run, be careful when testing!

Continue reading to learn how to build this AppleScript.

  • Four reasons to get your parents to use Leopard

I held the phone tightly in my right hand. With my left, I rubbed my dry, tired eyes. I looked at the clock in my Mac's menu bar. I had been on the phone for forty-five minutes, with no indication that I'd be hanging it up any time soon.

"OK," I said in a slow, deliberate tone. "Let's start from the beginning. Click on the Mail menu. A list should appear. Do you see it?"

A pause. "Yes," my mother said.

"What do you see in that list?" I said.

    "File ... About Mail ... Preferences ...."

    "Good. Do you see 'Quit'?"

    "Yes."

"Excellent. Click on 'Quit' and we'll start again."

Welcome to my personal hell, circa 2006. Pull up a chair. Get comfortable. We're going to be here for quite a while.

  • Mac 101: curing multiple-monitor mixups with Detect Displays

    Filed under:

More Mac 101, tips for the Mac beginner in you. Lucky dual-monitor users, rejoice -- with that second display on your desk, you're bound to be the productivity envy of the entire office. Just one little problem, though: sometimes your Mac has trouble recognizing that extra real estate, and rebooting every time your resolutions get munged is beginning to get old.

Relax, and check out your mini-menu for monitors over there in the menu bar. See "Detect Displays?" That's your buddy, right there -- it will tell your Mac to recheck the connected monitors and adjust resolutions as needed. Note the model number of the external display shown; if everything's connected as it should be, your Mac should autosense the type and capabilities of the display without any intervention.

For an even quicker trigger on display detection, try Cmd-F2 (brightness up) on your built-in laptop keyboard. Cmd-F1 will toggle display mirroring, also handy in a pinch.

There are several ways other ways to get external displays to behave; the oldest, for laptop users, is to sleep the machine and wake it back up -- this usually triggers a display detection when all else fails. There's also a Detect Displays button in the Displays preference pane.

  • Growl website gets redesign

If you know TUAW, then you know that there's one thing we cannot live without ... it's Growl. Growl is a great way to view important messages from multiple Mac apps as little pop-ups in the corner of your screen.

This weekend, Growl's website received a very nice redesign. It's never been this easy to navigate the styles and various extras on the site.

    Thanks, Chris!

  • Flow goes 1.0

Flow, a pleasant FTP client for the Mac, has definitely come a long way since we last took a look at it (so very long ago). Flow just hit version 1.0, and here are some of the new features:
    • QuickLook
    • Built-in editor
    • FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, .Mac, and local FTP
    • Droplets to upload quickly
Flow is designed specifically for Mac OS X Leopard (version 10.5). Flow costs just $29; you can also download a free 15-day trial version then buy a license. I am an adamant Transmit/Panic addict; however, Flow has such a great Aqua-licious UI and feature list, that I may make the jump (sorry Panic guys).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • 802.11n upgrade to Airport Express makes WDS a whole lot simpler

    Filed under:

If I had to pick one feature of the Airport base station that makes me absolutely tear my hair out every time, that feature would be WDS. Getting a wireless network extended across multiple base stations with no wired interconnect is dark magic, and it seems like it never works the same way twice; it's always a mystery blend of MAC address input, switching between encryption modes, hard restarts, matching security settings and swearing. When I had to link up an Airport Extreme with two Airport Express units last week, I resigned myself to a long afternoon of trying to tame the user-hostile.

This time, though, it was different -- thanks to the power of N. 802.11n, now supported on both the Extreme and Express models, provides a remarkably easier WDS setup than earlier protocols. Rather than having to set the MAC addresses of the remote base stations and restart in sequence, on an all-n setup you just check the "Allow this network to be extended" on the master, and choose "Extend a wireless network" on the remotes. Easy as can be, and compared to the old way it's a big relief.

  • Reminder, talkcast tonight at 10 pm ET

Last week's show with Mike Schramm & guest Tony Walla was a lot of fun; we dove into the Apple Store support experience and covered the week's news as well. Download direct, listen in your browser or subscribe to the TalkShoe feed in iTunes.

One topic that came up on the previous show: some of our readers are having trouble reading the site from their iPhones or iPod touch handhelds, with Mobile Safari sometimes locking up or causing the entire device to reset -- not at all cool. We're trying to sort out the exact issues and come up with a permanent solution, but in the meantime iPhone users can bookmark the lean mobile version of the site at m.tuaw.com to avoid problems.

Join us again for tonight's talkcast featuring Christina Warren and Dave Caolo as we get the lowdown on their WordPress 2.5 upgrades and consider the prospect of a 3G iPhone. Are you holding off on iPhone purchases while you wait for the new version, or moving ahead as planned? Tune in and let us know.

  • Cranky Apple lawyers go after NYC green logo

    Filed under:

Sometimes you have to think that we'd all be better off if Apple's marketing and trademark folks just dropped the corporate legal department out of their Rolodexes. Last week Bloomberg & Wired reported that Apple is still challenging the New York City environmental initiative GreenNYC's logo, which does look like an apple but not all that much like this Apple's apple. The trademark dispute hinges on the likelihood of public confusion and the possible dilution of Apple's mark, both of which seem to fail the silly test -- but you never do know.

Considering that Apple was on the receiving end of a trademark fight with the Beatles for decades, it's not clear why it's prudent or necessary for the company to pick a fight with a city known as "the Big Apple" since before the invention of the vacuum tube. I guess once you stake out your orchard, you have to make sure those darn kids don't steal the fruit. More on this story from BloggingStocks and the NYT.

Update: Nilay Patel at Engadget (who is a lawyer) describes the opposition filing as a normal part of the trademark process. Still seems kind of petty.

  • Ask TUAW: Xbox 360 and PS3 networking, extracting DVD audio, JVC video files, and more

In this episode of Ask TUAW we'll be taking questions about networking game consoles (both Xbox 360 and PS3), extracting only the audio from a DVD, using non-standard video files from a JVC camcorder, getting photos off of an iPhone, keeping your Mac's screen from dimming and much more.

As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!

  • A dynamic screensaver, DIY style

    Filed under:

Glenn Franxman at HackerMojo just put up a Python script that makes pictures pulled from MetroPulse into a screensaver. It's a mere 17 lines of code (which you can easily modify without knowing Python) that run as a cron job, downloading the images into the directory that you specify for the "Choose Folder..." screensaver.

It's a simple, fun way to keep your screensaver interesting using a minimum of tools. There have been similar applications for services like Flickr, such as FlickrSavr or the screensaver that comes with 1001, but the simplicity of just updating the pictures in the screensaver folder is appealing. And a screensaver seems like a perfect application for my previous ideas involving mdfind and sips. By using the simple method Glenn applies in his Python script, and making a few modifications to the "Spotlight Gallery" Perl script, you could make your screen display the last 20 or so images added to your own system. That could truly be a practical use for the idea, depending, of course, on where the most recent images on your system come from. Yes, my mind just went there.

  • More iPhone 3G buzz from Uncle Walt

You have to smile a bit at the role Walt Mossberg plays in the geekosphere -- he's like the chairman of the Federal Reserve, what with the excitement that his offhand comments can generate. In this case, towards the end of a rather interesting rant about the obstacles to video delivery ("8 minutes of horrible commercials in a 30-minute show... there are lots of people who could care less about erectile dysfunction... in the US, we really suck at broadband") captured on beet.tv, he casually mentions that the iPhone 3G is coming within 60 days. What, now?

We've been gaining confidence in the time horizon for a new rev of the iPhone hardware along with everyone else these past few days, but having the imprimatur of Mr. M on a June 3G release makes it all seem more real, somehow.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.
