  • iTunes now offering PBS content

Apple is quietly announcing that they now are offering content from PBS. Right now they are offering five stations: WGBH, KQED, WETA, WNET (Thirteen in New York), and ideastream. PBS offers great educational shows, interviews, and historical lessons from The War: A film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick and The Jewish Americans.

    PBS

Not only can you download the video content, educators can also download teacher guides. The learning guides are available in English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali. The full show transcripts are also available. There are over 200 tracks on iTunes, in varying length, including a “Meet the Author” section from WETA, which has five- to twenty-minute interviews with popular children’s book authors and illustrators.

WETA has also provided Professional Development Webcasts that are very in-depth and detailed. WGBH has organized its videos by topic, grade, and free public lectures. Thirteen: WNET New York has 32 Professional Development courses available. ideastream has the largest library available with over 500 videos, radio shows, and other broadcasts.

It looks like there are some NOVA episodes that are free and some that will still cost $4.99 each.

This is a great resource for educators, so if you are one, or know any, take full advantage of these free teaching aides.

  • Mac clone announced - Just as ugly as you would imagine a wannabe to be
    Pystar Mac clone

Back when Steve-O returned to Apple, he completely killed off their clone program that allowed other hardware manufacturers to build computers that could run the Mac OS. Steve notoriously wants control over everything plus the clone program was cutting in to their bottom-line.

In addition to Apple putting a stop to the clone program, they also updated their EULA to say:

You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-labeled computer, or to enable others to do so.

That EULA update effectively makes the announcement by Psystar quite humorous and short lived.

Ars reported today that Miami, Florida computer company Psystar (site down) had released a mac clone called Open Computer with the following specs:

    • 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
    • 250 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    • 2 GB DDR2 667 RAM
    • Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics
    • DVD+/-R Optical Drive
    • 4 USB ports

How much does this mac-wannabe cost? $554 for the basic configuration. Unfortunately their FAQs state that doing any Apple-released updates could kill it. Not to mention their entire operation is completely illegal.

    Good luck, Pystar. Or not.
