  • Apple Buys Non-Intel Chip Maker

I don’t think this will show up in tonight’s quarterly report, but Forbes is reporting that Apple bought chip company P.A. Semi with the apparent hopes to use them to create chips for the iPhone. Unsurprisingly, Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not comment on our purposes and plans.” Mr. Dowling, I realize that Apple doesn’t usually comment on any question that a news outlet might ask you, but how are we supposed to run Windows Mobile on our iPhones if you don’t tell go with a small Intel chip?

    I jest, don’t attack!

This is interesting, though because Intel claims that its new mobile-targeted chips will be “central to handheld computing.” It seems that the purchase of this small (150 employees) company is to remind Intel that just because they are in Apple’s computers, doesn’t mean they will be in Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch.

I have never heard of P.A. Semi, but they created a super non-power-sucking 64-bit dual core microprocessor in February 2007 that they claim is 300-400 percent more efficient than other processors.

Apparently, negotiations with P.A. Semi took place at Steve Jobs’ home. If that is true, what does it take to get a meeting with Jobs at his home? I am no CEO, but that seems like a pretty big honor to be invited to a CEO’s home.

  • Beginning Mac: Application Install/Uninstall

When I first switched from Windows to OSX one thing that I initially didn’t really understand was how to install/uninstall applications. Obviously it is second nature now, but hopefully the information below will help a new switcher.

    Installation

On Windows when you download an application it is generally a .exe file. It is sometimes compressed in to a .zip file.

dmg file On OS X, a large majority of applications that you download will be in .dmg format. .dmg stands for “disk image” and it basically functions like a hard drive. DMG files can be mounted and ejected just like a regular hard drive. The purpose of the .dmg file is for compression. It can greatly reduce the size of the file you are downloading.

  • Speech to Text, the Next Step

Windows has developed what they feel is the next generation of computing, the tablet PC. We've seen Bill Gates strongly advocate the tablet as the true "next generation" platform for computing. But I disagree, and here's why.

    Handwriting schmandwriting

I still argue that writing recognition on a tablet isn't close enough to paper writing. I've used a HP Pavillion tx series tablet and what I've found is an intuitive hand writing recognition application. I think anything that can translate my handwriting into text is worth appreciating, but it still doesn't replace the feel and use of paper. I think mainly because it still transforms my writing into text alone. Why not just type then, I'm faster at it anyways?

I know with the Wacom Tablet (PC/Mac) you can maintain your actual handwriting but again the experience takes time getting used to, and is still confined by the limitations of its own application. I know there are people who live by their Wacom tablet as if they were extensions of themselves, for lectures and daily navigating, but I think if we break down the need, we can create a more intuitive system of input.
