  • iMacs Updated

Today Apple update its line of iMacs.

This really is not that much of an update, but if you are like me and shopping for a new iMac, the addition of more RAM to the $1499 model is a welcome addition.

The 4GB of RAM for only $180 more is much better than the $360 it used to cost. The processors speeds were also bumped, and Apple threw in the Penryn chips, up to 3.06 Ghz.

This picture is the deal with wireless mouse and keyboard, iWork ‘08, and the education discount (hey, if you can get a discount, use it).

  • Using Subversion with Xcode 3.0

When you’re coding a huge project in Xcode, and you’ve written all of this awesome stuff, it’s almost done, and the big release is coming soon, that’s when the worst happens:

    1. The hard drive that had all of your code on it dies suddenly
    2. You didn’t have a backup in TimeMachine
    3. Files become corrupted
    4. You remove some important code, or overwrite it, accidentally - and save over your only copy; and you don’t know how you’ll ever manage to rewrite those thousands of lines of code over again
    5. All of the above

This is where Subversion (called “SVN” for short) comes in handy.

  • More on Accessibility: "Captioning Sucks"

Closed captioning is a technology that’s been around for a few decades, but it’s changed very little since then. The techniques and processes behind the scenes are even still roughly the same as they were in the beginning. Some Canadians have been complaining that the quality of their captions are even worse than those in the United States.

But no matter how you look at it: Captioning Sucks. Yep, and it needs to be improved; especially with new media. It’s still embarrassing on DVD, too! And HDTV captions aren’t much better. The technology is slow, clunky, limited in the number of fonts, accuracy is sometimes lacking - if they even bother at all (some media companies and broadcasters just don’t care).

There is one company that I think is trying to help and make a difference - Apple, of course! They do have a long way to go, but they’re doing their best to encourage movie companies to put captions on their iTunes-hosted movies (not that the movie companies care enough to actually do so).

When I downloaded the WWDC session videos from 2007, I noticed that they’ve added captions (the transcription is bad, but it’s a start). Horray!

Anyway, I wanted to give a shout out to Apple, and encourage them to keep improving in this area… and to point everyone to the Captioning Sucks website, so that we can pressure those companies to improve captioning for the hearing impaired.

  • Read RSS Newsfeeds In Style With "Times"

From Google Reader to NetNewsWire to Vienna, RSS readers have become somewhat of a commodity, with all of them providing a similar feature set and the same approach to getting your fill of feeds. Then, along comes Dustin MacDonald who – not content with the status quo – cooks up a little application called, simply enough, “Times” that takes a whole new approach to syndication perusal.

    The Basics

Times has three obvious goals: first, it wants to make RSS scanning feel more like reading a newspaper or magazine through distinctive and visually appealing layout and typography; second, it highly encourages you to choose your feeds carefully, thus eliminating what has become the inevitable backlog (as an example, since I broke my right ring finger last week, I have over 10,000 unread items in NetNewsWire, which is up from the normal 5,000 backlog); and, third, the way in which you highlight and save individual posts definitely has effect of the application being a solid research tool or blogging aid.
