- Apple releases video of today's event
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple Corporate, iTS, Software, Other Events, iTunes, Steve Jobs, iPod nano
Though the video of today's event is not yet on Apple.com (as of this writing - though you can find it here), it has been added to Apple's official podcast. Even if you were underwhelmed by today's announcements, you don't want to miss Steve's return or the ovation he received. The video of today's press event is just over one hour and fourteen minutes long.
We'll be diving deep into the new features of iTunes 9 over the next 24 hours, so check back often. Until then, launch the stream and succumb to the Reality Distortion Field.

Filed under: OS, Odds and ends, iPhone
iPhone OS 3.1 made the scene today at the Apple event, with a number of new features and fixes that should make iPhone owners happy (and iPod touch owners -- although for them, the version number is 3.1.1 instead). After a slow start to the download, I was able to get the update loaded onto my iPhone 3GS and I gave some of the new features a test drive.
The first big new feature is the Genius for Apps. To turn it on, you go to the Featured screen the App Store, and click the Genius button at the top of the display. After approving the license agreement, Genius is up and running, and clicking on the Genius button gives you a list of what it considers to be good suggestions based on what I have purchased. I wasn't very happy with the first list it produced (see screenshot at right), since I don't live in NYC, don't read Time, and really don't want something called The Most Useless App Ever.
The Genius lets you refine this list by swiping items to remove them. I did notice by the third screen of suggestions that the Genius was starting to pick apps that were more my style, so I think it's going to work out.
Read on for more impressions of 3.1.Continue reading First Look: TUAW gives iPhone OS 3.1 the hands-on treatment

Filed under: iPod nano, iPod touch
Well, looks like we weren't the only ones wondering about the two big questions of the day -- the New York Times sat down briefly with Steve Jobs post-event this morning and found out the whys and wherefores on the following:
- Why doesn't the iPod nano take still pictures? Jobs says that the tiny teensy CMOS sensor in the nano isn't up to the quality standards needed for stills; it's too thin. "The sensors for doing a still camera... they are just way too thick to ever fit inside the Nano."
- What about a camera for the iPod touch? The product path for the touch, apparently, is that it's a great gaming device and it's the lowest investment option for getting access to the App Store; given that, the push was to get it down to a price point everyone could afford instead of adding new features like a camera. "So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don't need to add new stuff - we need to get the price down where everyone can afford it." Not to say it won't ever happen.

Filed under: iTS, iTunes, Bad Apple
Buyer beware: one of the features that has silently disappeared from iTunes 9 is the Shopping Cart, where you used to be able to place songs, albums, videos, and apps for future purchase. It has been replaced with a new feature called "Wish List" that functions similarly to the old shopping cart, storing your potential purchases on iTunes's servers.
What's slightly sneaky about this is there's nothing apparently different from an end-user's perspective at first glance. Clicking "purchase" or "buy now" used to automatically place items in your shopping cart if you had that preference enabled, but now the behavior has been completely altered - now all purchases on the iTunes store are 1-click if you click the "Buy Now" button, and there's no way to cancel them once they start. So whether it's a $1.29 song or a $129 iPhone app, if you click that "Buy Now" button, you're getting charged.
If you want to emulate the old "shopping cart" purchase behavior, you have to instead click the arrow to the right of "Buy Now" and select "Add to Wish List."
Save your wallet! Always click the arrow!
Update: If you had items in your shopping cart before updating to iTunes 9, they won't have disappeared. All of the items that used to be in your shopping cart in iTunes 8 or older should have migrated to the new Wish List in iTunes 9.

Filed under: Odds and ends, iTunes
Yeah, like everyone else, iTunes has fan page on Facebook. If you can stomach the process, you can even get 20 songs for free by becoming a fan. The process is a bit clunky, however, which seems to be par for the course on Facebook. First, you become a fan. Then, you'll need to allow the "Free On iTunes" app to get access to your profile (typical of a Facebook app, of course). Then, you click a link that says "redeem now" -- a link which took me to a blank page.
After digging back into the fan page again, I found that button again, and clicked it again. This time I got the right page, but iTunes never woke up (that is, the store link didn't work). Then I tried yet again to "redeem now" and voila! A page warning that I'd already done all this appeared. Luckily there was a redemption code on this page, and the "redeem now" button finally worked. I am now downloading iTunes 9, iPhone OS 3.1 and 20 songs by indie artists.
If you can suffer the mess that is Facebook, you can get some free tunes.

As we saw earlier, Apple announced new iPod touch models today. They'll include both lower price points and significant internal improvements. There were no major changes to the overall design -- meaning no camera at this point, no matter how long we've been waiting -- but they will definitely make the iPod gaming experience hard to beat. Phil Schiller himself made several digs at Sony and Nintendo for their lack of game titles compared to Apple's (607, 3,680 and 21,178 respectively).
8GB version: $199
The 8GB iPod Touch still has the same internals as before, but a significant drop in price makes it much more affordable for all of you iPod gamers.
32GB: $299, 64GB: $399
Both the 32GB and 64GB received internal upgrades and support for OpenGL|ES 2.0. We don't have hardware specifics as of yet, but Apple says that it will be "Up to 50% faster" than the previous iPod touch. That should put it somewhere around the same speed of the iPhone 3GS.
Apple has really stressed the gaming experience of the iPod touch, and for good reason. There are a lot of companies tripping over each other to get a piece of the Apple pie. Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Tapulous and Gameloft were at the event showing off some new games that will run beautifully on the new iPod touch handhelds. Happy Gaming!TUAWiPod touch gets more storage and speed originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 15:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

One of the great new features in iTunes 9 is app management; I've been begging for this one (among other things). We can now organize our pages (and pages) of apps right in iTunes, no more dragging jiggly icons across 9 or 10 screens. I'm ecstatic (and wondering what took so long).
From Apple's website:
[...] it's easier to organize all the apps on your iPhone or iPod touch, because now you can do it right in iTunes, right from your computer. Shop the App Store on your computer, iPhone, or iPod touch. Then go to your iTunes library to arrange (and rearrange) your apps and add (or delete) Home screens. iTunes automatically syncs your new Home screens with your iPhone or iPod touch.

Apple's event is starting up right now, but in the meantime, they've (inadvertently) revealed iTunes 9 via a page over in iTunes. The new version of Apple's software will include quicker and easier navigation options (you can see the new top menu in the pic above), easy-to-access preview buttons, and new ways to experience media purchased in the store. iTunes LPs will let you have the full album experience with lyrics, liner notes, and band photos and videos, and iTunes Extras will allow you to experience DVD-style extras with movies you buy from the iTunes store.
Expect an announcement at the event in a few minutes -- there is a download link on the page, so we'll also expect to have the software up and running by the end of the day. Sounds exciting!

Filed under: OS, Software Update, Snow Leopard
The InterWebs were buzzing last evening with word that Build 10B504 of Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard had been seeded to developers. This build appeared about a week after the initial 10.6.1 seed, which was allegedly seeded to developers only three or four days after 10.6 hit the streets.
What's interesting about this build is that it addresses only two documented issues -- the occasional crashing of Desktop Services in Finder, and excessive "dyld shared cache" messages in the Console.
Many issues that Mac users have experienced since installing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard can be attributed to third-party software incompatibilities, but there is common agreement that there are other bugs that need to be addressed in the OS.
So, when will the new Snow Leopard cub actually hit our Macs? Mac OS X 10.5.1 was released 21 days after Leopard's first leap, and Mac OS X 10.4.1 squeaked out the doors at Cupertino a mere 17 days after Tiger first growled. It wouldn't be surprising, then, to see the first "dot-release" of Snow Leopard showing up in Software Update in the next week.
Whenever it happens, we'll be sure to let you know.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, OS, Software, Apple
It's a common theory that Apple is a "hardware company" not a "software company." What does that mean? Doesn't it actually sell both?
The idea is that Apple uses software to push more hardware sales. If Apple was a software company, you wouldn't see the fantastic and very useful iLife bundle of applications included for free on every new Mac, including the el-cheapo Mini. Instead, they might decide to charge $99 for it, or worse, break it up into pieces and distribute it as separate packages, each with its own price.
Snow Leopard's price also seems to support this theory, especially when contrasted to Microsoft's pricing model. Any "dot-oh" operating system upgrade priced at $29 is simply amazing. And given the fact that you can upgrade a whole home or small office full of Macs for less than the price of an Xbox 360 game...well, that's just a special kind of awesome. The main OS competitor, however, has graciously offered its upgrade, similar in "just fixing stuff and making it run better" nature to Apple's update, at the low, low price of $129. Ouch! At least you can save a substantial amount by buying Microsoft's family pack at a tick under 150 bucks, but that discount will only get you three copies instead of Apple's five. And it's still three times the price of Snow Leopard's bundle!
But I realized something interesting about the whole "hardware company vs. software company" argument. As a Mac convert, I've noticed that I think quite a bit less about the hardware than I do the software. In the PC world I still live in, we talk about processor benchmarks, motherboard options, frontside bus speeds, and other Ambien replacements. However, when I talk Mac, I'm often concerned much more with the software it's running, what OS version is installed, and where I can find a free app to do what I need.Continue reading Think different? The Pixelmator team has released another update to my favorite little photo editor. Pixelmator 1.5 Spider brings a host of web exporting and sharing options, including a new "Save for Web" feature and the option to send a picture straight to Mail or iPhoto. Additionally, there's a new Trim tool that will cut off transparent or background pixels, and a new Slice tool that will let you cut an image up into pieces and optimize each for the 'net. There's also the usual round of bug fixes, including support for full compatibility with Snow Leopard.
As usual, the new version is available for update from right within the current app. For new users, Pixelmator is available for $59 over on their website, complete with a free trial if you want to check out this photo editing powerhouse before buying. I really enjoy using Pixelmator -- it's lightweight and easy to use, and while it's not quite as full-featured as Photoshop (though with every big version release like this, they get closer), it's a great app to do a little image editing in.TUAWPixelmator 1.5 Spider update out originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Internet Tools
I've got a basement full of Macs in various states of repair, which shouldn't surprise you. One of my hobbies is re-purposing those old machines. For instance, there's a G3 All-In-One on my workbench which runs iFixIt.com when I've got a project. Additionally, I use a G4 iMac as a Daylite server.
I've also had a G5 iMac for a while, but nothing for it to do. Earlier this week, I gave it a fresh install of Mac OS 10.4 and thought I'd use it for blogging and other writing. No web browsing, Twitter, iPhoto or the like. Call it a "Writing Mac." Here's how I set it up.
Reduce distractions
The Dock and drives are hidden from the Finder. No Twitter clients are installed, and only a few bookmarks are in place. The home folder contains only the default items and there's no music in the iTunes library. In other words, there's nothing to compete for my attention.
Streamlined for work
I've populated the dock with apps that support writing and nothing more. I've moved it to the lower left-hand corner by choosing "Position on screen > Left" from the Dock preference pane and this little bit of command line editing from Shawn Blanc:defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string end
Now I can have the dock tiny yet accessible as I run my writing software. Speaking of which ...
The software
You'll see a few icons in my Dock. After the Finder and Mail, is Scrivener. If you've got a large writing project to complete, Scrivener is the companion you'll want on your side. Research, outlining and organization is a pleasure with such a great application.
I've also got Apple's Dictionary in the Dock because, believe it or not, 'ol Dave isn't so good with the spelling.
Next is Yojimbo (I had to upgrade to 10.5.7 to get this to run. D'oh!). I only started using this app recently, but I can see the appeal. When running, it puts a small tab on the edge of the desktop. It's easy to drop bits of text, images or URL's in there to use as reference. The good stuff, once reviewed, gets moved into Scrivener.
Finally is my beloved ImageWell for editing images for use here on TUAW. It runs on 10.4 and is just the tool for quick-and-dirty cropping and resizing.
At last, iTunes streams Radio Paradise, my favorite Internet radio station.
The best part is that there's almost nothing to back up (other than Scrivener projects, which I drop in my Dropbox). If this machine's HD croaked tomorrow, I'd be able to pick up where I left off with minimal fuss.
So there you have it, my Writing Mac. Aren't legacy machines fun?TUAWSetting up a "Writing Mac" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 07:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
