Leopard users, you have your first OS update waiting for you. The Login & Keychain Update 1.0 fixes a couple of issues with logging in and Keychain (shocking, yes?). According to the Apple documentation it corrects issues with the following, and I quote:
- Logging in with an account originally created in Mac OS X 10.1 or earlier that has a password of 8 or more characters.
- Connecting to some 802.11b/g wireless networks.
- Changing the password of a FileVault-protected account.

When Apple revealed Aperture 1.5.6 earlier this week, I was ecstatic that Aperture was now ready to be installed on the new big cat. Sadly, Apple's knowledge base states you should not to be running Aperture whilst doing automatic backups with Time Machine as you risk "inconsistencies in the Aperture database." as a result. Running Time Machine restore operations also can cause this issue, but it's worth noting that these only occur whilst Aperture is running.
Apple currently recommends folks turn off automatic backups with Time Machine and revert to manual backups and "Avoid performing either backups or restores while Aperture is running.": hardly the solution of choice, given Apple's pushing of Time Machine as an automated backup system. Either way, I'd imagine we're likely to see another update to Aperture and/or Leopard pretty soon.

I have to be honest, as a browser, Safari, on its own, does very little for me. In my pre-switcher life I loved Firefox, in large part because of its plug-in structure - and although Safari is certainly more stable than FF (on my system at least) - it's not the same. Luckily, a number of good plug-ins for Safari DO exist. Unfortunately, many of those plug-ins have not been updated to be fully compatible with Safari 3 (which was previously in beta) or Leopard. In fact, because of the way Input Manager was changed with Leopard, there was a lot of speculation that plug-in development for Safari would become obsolete.
That's where PlugSuit from Infinite Labs comes in. PlugSuit is a Leopard compatible plug-in manager that will work with many popular Tiger plug-ins like Inquisitor and SafariStand without changing a thing. Infinite Labs also makes the great free plug-in, Twicetab (that allows users to open up a new tab simply by double clicking on the tab bar, a la FireFox or Opera), and users even have the option of downloading and installing PlugSuit and Twicetab together. Plus, it's free! It's important to note that that plug-ins that were not designed with Leopard in mind may still have some problems or not function correctly. Infinite Labs says that most that were developed for the latest Safari 3 beta should work, but double-check with the plug-in developer to ensure compatibility.

All the Leopard news might have made you forget about the iPhone, you know that other thing Apple does. Fret not because the iPhone is back is making headlines again thanks to a new policy in Apple Stores. The NY Times reports that Apple is no longer accepting cash for iPhones; if you want to buy an iPhone you'll need to use a credit or debit card. Also the limit of iPhones purchasable in one visit is now 2, down from the previous limit of 5.
