- 24 hours of Leopard: Time Machine
Feature: Time Machine
How it works: Plug an external hard drive into your Mac and Leopard will automatically detect it and ask if you want to enable the Time Machine back up option. Select yes, and you're done. Time Machine will automatically back up your entire hard drive but if you want to skip certain files or folders, simply tell it what to do in the preference pane.
Time Machine is also handy for that dreaded "Why did I hit delete?" moment. If you accidentally trash that presentation you've been working on the night before you need it, just flip back through the files on the back up drive until you find what you need. Apple assumes that this will happen to everyone at some point, so they'll thoughtfully provided access to Time Machine right in Finder.
Got more than one Mac? No problem. Multiple machines can be backed up onto one drive via your wireless network.
Who will use it: Anyone who hates losing files, folders, documents, or media unexpectedly. So, pretty much everyone.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Bad Apple, Apple, Leopard
One of my favorite Mac tips, which I shared on TUAW ages ago, won't be making the transition to Leopard. According to David Pogue you can no longer drag your Mac's Hard Disk into the Dock. I'm not sure why Apple thinks that Stacks and a speedier Spotlight can replace the ease of use that this trick offers up, but I'm hoping that it will make a triumphant return in 10.5.1.
David also highlights some other features that didn't make it into his full Leopard review.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: OS, Odds and ends
Feature: Terminal 2
How it works: What's black and white and tabbed all over? Leopard's Terminal 2 introduces tabbed sessions so you don't need to keep 500 terminal windows open all at once like I do. Hello, my name is Erica and I'm a terminalholic.
Who will use it: Anyone who wants terminal awesomeness in giant barrelfuls. There are 12 steps to bringing your command-line use under control. After admitting that you cannot control your command-line addiction, turning to a tabbed interface will at least help you adjust your coding behavior.

Screencast is the latest entry in the OS X screencast making sweepstakes (joining iShowU and old champ, Snapz Pro X among others). One of the nice things about Screencast is its built-in support for showing keystrokes and mouse clicks, without the need for extra software like Mouseposé. When you type a keyboard command while recording, a bezel will pop up showing what you typed. The specs and price sound good (30fps and less than $30), but it's hard to tell how well it will work for longer screencasts since the demo is limited to 1 minute (and prominently watermarks the video).
Screencast is $29 and the demo is available.

Fire up Software Update, folks, Apple is setting some updates free. iDVD 6.0.4 is now in the wild, and it 'improves overall stability and supports compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5.'
iLife Support 8.1.1 has also been released which, 'improves overall stability, addresses a number of other minor issues, and supports general compatibility issues.'
Apple hasn't posted these on their site for download yet.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hacks, TUAW Tips, Leopard
We already noted the controversy over the side-positioned Dock in Leopard and Apple's apparent response. This leaves untouched, however, the fact that many folks just don't like the new Dock glass shelf effect even when the Dock is at the bottom of the screen. And that brings us to the first TUAW Tip of the Leopard era; you can turn off the shelf with a simple terminal command as revealed above (full size picture -- the site that first revealed this trick has since gone down).
Not having Leopard yet myself, I can't confirm this, but this does appear to be a legitimate way of getting rid of the shelf. Now if somebody can discover a similar preference to make the menubar fully opaque everything will be set back to rights!

Filed under: iPod Family, Security, iPhone
If you've hacked your iPhone for disk access, have you ever peeked at the dynamic-text.dat file in /var/root/Library/Keyboard? You might be surprised at the contents. All your personal words that don't show up in the default dictionary get stored in this file. If you're using a business iPhone, you may want to especially monitor this file. It's not a keylogger but there's a lot of personal data that ends up there.
Thanks NerveGas
Update: Yes, this does include passwords and yes, they are stored in clear text.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Cult of Mac, Apple, Leopard
This Apple tech doc is making the rounds on the Mac blogs today. That's right folks, more than 5 years after Steve declared OS 9 dead (that's Classic to those of you who have only known OS X) it seems that Classic really is dead. Leopard will no longer run Classic apps, and Apple suggests you upgrade to OS X compatible applications.
Are people out there still using OS 9 applications? If so, what are you forced to run in OS 9?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hardware, Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Flickr Find
If the fact that I write for an Apple related blog isn't enough to prove that I am a gigantic nerd, I also happen to like Star Trek. That's why I am always thrilled when I can write about both Apple products and Star Trek in the same post. Today's opportunity comes to TUAW via etchstar.com's Flickrstream. You might be aware that there is a small, but growing, industry that, using lasers, will etch various designs onto your MacBook, iPod, or iPhone. etchstar is the latest business to offer this service (it looks like they are launching on November 1st).
etchstar's Flickrstream is chock-a-block with Apple products decorated with a number of Star Trek themed designs, amongst other things. There's a Starfleet Command MacBook Pro, an Enterprise MacBook (seen above), an Enterprise A iPod, a Star Trek logo iPod, a Klingon Empire iPod, and a very cool nano or two.
I wonder how much it would cost to get the Enterprise on my iPhone. How sweet would that be?

Update: My geek cred is in question! I wrongly identified the Enterprise above as the Enterprise A. Clearly, it is just the plain old Enterprise (from the Original Series). I blame the Borg for the mistake.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Newsweek editor Steven Levy (he of iPod authorial fame) has posted a video review of Leopard for your enjoyment. Nice rundown of new features and explanation of Time Machine; however, he does a lot of Spaces whisking-about without explaining what the feature is or what he's doing.

If you were one of the "lucky" folks listening live to the talkcast on Sunday night 10/21... well, what can I say, I feel your pain. Despite the audio bridge issues on the Talkshoe side, we did get a nice clean take on Skype and spent a solid hour counting down to 10.5, covering favorite expectations for Leopard and quickly diving into the big iPhone development news with Mike Schramm, Mat Lu, and special guest Kai Cherry. You can download the show directly, pick it up in our RSS or iTunes feeds, or stream it direct from Talkshoe.
Don't forget that our next live show -- lucky #13 -- will be Sunday night 10/28 at a special 10pm ET start time, with a free-for-all call-in as we all enjoy the first 48 hours of Leopard. Mark your calendar and set an alarm; it's gonna be a barn-burner.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

I am known for many things amongst my circle of friends: my rapier-like wit, my roguish good-looks, and my humility. The one thing that I am assuredly not known for is being organized. I lose things all the time; I forget people's birthdays and I can never seem to recall what I need to do on a given day.
Good thing there is a whole cottage industry developing around the concept of "Getting Things Done." The idea behind GTD (as the Getting Things Done wonks call it) is to create a framework around your tasks which enables you to succeed in getting those things done. Sadly, it just doesn't work for me. I get so lost in the details of creating the "System" that will supposedly let me accomplish my goals, that I never spend any time actually doing anything, other than figuring out what I have to do. That's why, time after time, I return to the age old method: a handwritten To Do list. It works like a charm every time, and creating one (which I do in a hierarchical fashion with several To Do's each having multiple tiers of sub-To Do's under them) is simple enough that it takes mere minutes to set up, and is flexible enough that one can track any small to medium scale project with it (assuming, of course, that the project doesn't involve too many folks).
There have been a slew of GTD-focused apps introduced on the Mac in the last few years. I've looked at each with the hope that they would free me from my disorganized shackles, supplanting my paper for something more technologically advanced. Each has failed me. That's not to say they are bad apps, they are just too complicated for my rather simple needs. I thought all hope was lost, and that's when I met TaskPaper.
TaskPaper, from Hog Bay Software, is my favorite new app of 2007 (Skitch is also high up there, but it is still in beta. Shipping has its privileges). TaskPaper, as the name suggests, offers itself up as a replacement for pen and paper in your organizational world. Shockingly, it has convinced me to give up my paper based list once and for all. Read on to find out why.

The big three geekmeisters have been released from their embargoes and the first Leopard newspaper reviews are out tonight. Uncle Walt even favored us with a cheery video rundown that appears to have been filmed in his rumpus room. A brief summary:
- David Pogue from the New York Times: "powerful, polished and carefully conceived." The respected Mac writer gives big points to Time Machine and Quick Look, while skeptically eyeing some lesser additions to the list of 300 (Danish
localizationspell checking comes in for Pogueian scorn). - Edward Baig at USAToday: "Apple's operating system widens its lead aesthetically and technologically... Leopard is one cool cat." Baig gives a pretty comprehensive rundown on new Leopard features and notes some hiccups with Back to my Mac vs. network firewalls.
- Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal and allthingsd.com: "Evolutionary, not revolutionary... I think it's better than Vista." The headline says it all: Faster, Easier than Vista. Walt took the time to go through scores of features and even do some startup timing tests with a Vaio (the Mac came out well ahead). He also noted a couple of neat features, such as Google Talk support in iChat and instant access to shared folders on Windows machines.
[E]very piece of software and hardware I tried on two Leopard-equipped Macs - a loaned laptop from Apple and my own upgraded iMac - worked fine, exhibiting none of the compatibility problems that continue to plague Vista. My old Hewlett-Packard inkjet printer, for which Vista lacks the proper software, worked instantly in Leopard, even over the network. And, unlike with Vista, it was able to print on both sides of the page. I popped my old Verizon cellphone modem card into the test Leopard laptop and it worked, too, with no software installation or tweaking.
Your mileage will almost certainly vary.
