  • iPad now available on Best Buy's online store

US electronics retailer Best Buy has offered Apple's iPad in some of its retail stores for some time, but until this weekend the device hasn't been available in Best Buy's online store. As of this past weekend, that's changed: the iPad is now available online at Best Buy. Both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the iPad are available at the same prices Apple charges (no TJ Maxx-style deep discounts, unfortunately), but Best Buy is currently offering an incentive to potential iPad buyers: 20 percent off on three iPad accessory packages. The availability of online purchases from Best Buy also expands the iPad's reach into areas which don't have any Apple retail presence. Customers in rural regions who are hundreds of miles from the nearest Apple Store may have been reluctant to buy one from Apple's online store, but they may be more willing to make an online purchase from Best Buy.

The iPad's reach in the US continues to expand beyond its initial Apple-only roots. It's now available not just directly through Apple, but also at Best Buy (physical and online stores), Target, Walmart, and at AT&T and Verizon's stores. Many overseas retailers have been given leave to sell the device as well; for example, five out of six major electronics retailers in New Zealand now sell the iPad in at least some of their stores. With the iPad becoming available in more varied locations, it's clear that Apple's aiming for very wide market penetration.

  • Apple now using iTun.es for Twitter link shortener

Last month we reported when a MacRumors reader pointed out that Apple owned the iTun.es domain name. At the time it was speculated that Apple could begin using iTun.es as a domain link shortener for iTunes URLs on Twitter.

Over the weekend that has become a reality. Now when you select the "Share on Twitter" drop-down option for a song in iTunes, the iTunes link is truncated to iTun.es to cut down on the character length of your tweet. Pretty sweet!

  • Notational Velocity ALT adds Markdown support and widescreen view

The runaway success of the iPad has provoked significant demand amongst people who want to edit seamlessly cloud-synced files across their iOS devices and their computers. We've seen a lot of apps vying to be the iOS part of that solution (such as Simplenote, Elements, WriteRoom, Edito, and a whole lot more), but that's only part of the puzzle -- people need something on the desktop end too. One popular tool for this is Notational Velocity, an open source program by Zachary Schneirov.

However, many people aren't entirely satisfied by Notational Velocity's UI and feature set. Because it is open source, developers are free to take the source code, modify it, and distribute their changed version -- this is generally called forking in the open source world. We've seen a number of Notational Velocity forks over the years (for example, this one by Steven Frank of Panic or this one by "elasticthreads"). Two days ago a new edition appeared: from TUAW's own Brett Terpstra comes Notational Velocity ALT (nvALT).

nvALT adds several new features to the baseline Notational Velocity app.

  • Talkcast tonight, 10pm ET: You set the agenda

This week on the talkcast, we'll be talking about what you want to talk about! Yes, it's our potpourri show, where we'll discuss whatever you want us to discuss -- just show up and let us know, or comment on this post, and we'll tackle it. (Oh, by the way, we'll also be giving away some goodies!)

Here's the master page to listen or join in on the show. To participate live on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client (just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 PM on Sunday), the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in.

To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. (That's a toll call, just so you know.)

If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac or your PC, you can connect via the free SJphone or X-Lite SIP clients or by using the TalkShoe client's ShoePhone tool; basic instructions are here.

We'll kick things off at 10 PM ET/ 7 PM PT this evening. See you there!

  • Rumor: Apple bidding for Nortel patent assets

The formerly high-flying Canadian telecommunications hardware provider Northern Telecom appears to be on its last legs, and Apple and Google are apparently among the vultures circling overhead ready to pick at the most valuable parts of the carcass. The two Silicon Valley companies are said to be among the bidders for Nortel's huge patent portfolio.

Nortel is a company with a history dating back to the earliest days of the telephone, having been established in 1882 by the Bell Telephone Company of Canada to manufacture phones and network equipment north of the border. In the 1990s, Nortel had tremendous growth as it provided many of the bits and pieces that made the expansion of the internet and mobile phone networks possible. The burst of the bubble saw the rapid decline of Nortel until it finally filed for bankruptcy protection in mid-2009.

Nortel has a portfolio of over 4,000 patents estimated to be worth over $1 billion. With both Apple and Google involved in patent litigation relating to their respective mobile phone efforts, the Nortel patents are likely be of great value as a defensive measure. Research in Motion and Motorola are also expected to bid on the patents in order to protect their own positions. Intellectual property battles between big companies often end up in a stalemate if both sides can conjure up sufficient patents that their opponent might be infringing on. The result is usually some sort of cross-licensing agreement that makes the lawyers wealthier and lets the companies go on their merry way. The auction of the patents is expected to be wrapped up soon.

  • Teddy's Day for iPad brings something new to interactive children's books

Teddy's Day (US$3.99) from Auryn Inc. is a lovely and gentle book for very small children, appropriate for ages one and up. It tells the story of a little girl who is on a quest to find out what her teddy bear does all day when she isn't home. She sets up all sorts of traps to catch Teddy, and in doing so this book brings something new to the exploding world of interactive children's books -- variety. In most books of this type, touching something triggers a short movement, sound or animation, but Teddy's Day is different.

Using a childlike graphic style and bright colors, you never know what you're going to get when you touch an object that, after the page is read by a little girl, is highlighted by colored lines. One really nice and involving part is when the girl says she will stay at home and spy on him. Tapping on the right space changes the page to an interactive coloring book containing a color palette, four sizes of crayons and some other tools. When you draw a picture and tap on a check mark the page reverts, and the newly created picture appears in a previously empty frame in the background. This can be repeated twice, since there are two frames. In another section where the girl is in a tree, tapping on a bird makes it caw, which is pretty standard stuff, but then tapping on any branch of the tree makes the bird fly right to it.

  • Sync iPhone photos wirelessly with Cinq

Cinq is an interesting and necessary free app for the iPhone. It wirelessly transfers your pictures from your iOS device to your home Mac or PC, either over 3G or Wi-Fi. There are three versions of the app: a paid version for the iPhone, a free (ad-supported) version, and a paid version for the iPad. I tried the free version.

Here's how it works. After going to the Cinq website and signing up for a free account, you download a little server app that runs on your home computer. On the Mac, you access it from the menu bar. Take a picture on your iPhone, or select an image from your picture roll, and it uploads in full resolution to your home computer. No cables, no iTunes or iPhoto sync needed.

The photos you send to your Mac go in a folder accessed from the Cinq app. When everything is set up there is a further bonus: you can see all your iPhoto libraries from your iOS device. You can save them from your phone, email them to others, or send them to TwitPic or Facebook. That's come in handy more than a few times. Cinq has features that should have been built into iOS, or at least been a MobileMe feature. You can send your photos to MobileMe, but they aren't on your home computer, just in the cloud.

Unfortunately, uploads of pictures are pretty slow; over 3G, they generally took more than a minute. You also can't send photos in the background without the app being onscreen, which iOS 4 should be capable of doing. The developers say faster uploads and background uploads are forthcoming.

Cinq has great promise. I like the idea of my vacation and holiday pictures getting home before I do. I really like the ability to access your iPhoto library remotely and download or forward pictures from it to others. If that's all the app did it would be worth a download. Give Cinq a try and see if it is useful to you. When uploads are sped up, Cinq will be a killer app. Cinq requires Mac OS X 10.5 or greater, Windows XP, or Windows Vista/7. On the iPhone side, it requires iOS 4.2 or later.

Sync iPhone photos wirelessly with Cinq originally appeared on TUAW on Sun, 12 Dec 2010 09:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
