  • Apple releases LED Cinema Display firmware update

Apple has released a firmware update for the 27-inch LED Cinema Display. The 957 KB download "addresses intermittent audio issues some users have experienced while using the 27-inch LED Cinema Display." To install the update you must have Mac OS X 10.6.4 or later, plus the confusingly similarly-named LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0 (released in September). Alternatively, an installation of Mac OS X 10.6.5 will do, as the previous display update was bundled with the 10.6.5 updater.

If you own the latest 27-inch Cinema Display, you'll likely be able to get the new firmware via Software Update; if it's not showing up, it's also available via direct download.

  • Countdown for iOS gives a highly customizable view of deadlines

I've used a countdown widget in OS X for ages, but recently wanted a program which could keep track of several events to count down to, and something specifically for my iPad, not just for my Mac.

I found a universal app simply called Countdown, and figured that for $1 I'd give it a try. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for, plus a little more.

    Interface

The concept is fairly simple, and so is the interface. You are asked to name the event and provide a date (time is optional). That's all you have to tell it, but there's more available. You can also choose the "Units" of measurement. This was one of the crucial features for me; If I have a deadline for a project coming up on March 1, I want to see how many days I have to work on it. By default, Countdown will show you year, month, day, hour, and minute, so that my March 1st deadline is shown as "2 months, 13 days" but if I want to see just the number of days left, I can uncheck all of the "Units" except "Day" and it will show "75 days remaining.

If I wanted to show just weekdays (53 remaining) or just weekend days (22 remaining), I can do that as well. On the other hand, I am on a bicentennial committee, and that deadline isn't until March of 2015, so I don't need to see "days" for that. Instead of I have years and months listed until it gets closer. Finally, I'm going to Chicago in April, and I don't need to see how many days that is, but I would like to know how many weeks (16!). You can group events by folder if you want (if you do, however, there is no way to see all of your events at once), and you can set them to "auto-sort," where they will organize themselves chronologically.

  • iPhone 101: Save extensions in Contacts

Having friends with an office job in the typical corporate environment often times means having to dial a desk phone with an extension. As Lifehacker points out, this usually results in having to memorize a contact's direct extension for use after dialing the office's main line.

The difficulty comes from the fact that simply dialing someone's extension immediately after the main line number will not work. The internal phone system of the company you are calling will not recognize the extension has been dialed until there is a connection between the caller and the system.

To solve this problem, cell phones have functionality that allows users to save a "pause" in between a main line number and a contact's extension. This gives an automated phone system time to answer the call and then after the pause has occurred, receive the extension from the caller.

Your humble iPhone supports this functionality and it's very useful when needing to dial colleagues at the office rather than on their mobile phone. TheiPhoneWebsite.com has a handy tutorial that shows you how to save a "pause" followed by an extension using the iPhone Contacts app.

In order to input a pause in your contact's phone number, you need to open the contact for editing using either the Phone or Contacts app on your iPhone or iPod touch. Tap on the number you wish to modify, and when the dial pad appears, press the "+*#" button on the lower left. This will change the dial pad as seen above and allow you to insert a pause (shown as a comma) into your contact's phone number. Add the extension to the end of the number, after the comma, and hit Save.

Now when tapping on the contact's office number to initiate a call, you will not be required to dial the extension after the phone system picks up. You will automatically be transferred to cell phone dialing nirvana, or at least to the person you were trying to reach.

  • Visa releases iPhone app with discounts, merchant directory

TechCrunch reports that payment processor Visa has released an iPhone app in the US* that gives shoppers access to some 50 merchants. Visa's new app comes with two services you can use, Offers and Locator.

Offers: Receive merchant discounts and special offers directly on your iPhone. The offers are stored on your iPhone and can be redeemed at physical retail locations, online, or by telephone. You can select your preferences for the types of offers that are sent to your iPhone.

Locator: Access maps and directions to nearby ATMs that accept Visa and retailers with special offers.

Visa's app was developed in conjunction with the UK-based mobile banking firm Monetize. With financial firms showing growing interest in iOS apps, there's no reason an app couldn't eventually replace the plastic in your wallet. For now, Visa's iOS app isn't revolutionary. It's more of a cautionary "dip your toe into the app pool to see how the water feels" approach.

*According to iTunes, it was released on November 24.

  • Another week of big iOS releases: Real Racing 2, World of Goo, lots more
As expected, the App Store has released another round of new apps, and since we're right in the middle of the busy holiday season, there are a ton of great and long-awaited games to play either out today or coming this evening. Man oh man that's a whole lot of great games to play. Most of these apps aren't quite out on the App Store just yet (though some of them are available in New Zealand, where it is already tomorrow), but they should all be live in the US store by 11:00pm Eastern time.

  • Engadget iPad app now available
engadget ipad app mom always did like her best
What's better than a (non-existent) TUAW iPad app? A real, live Engadget iPad app! Our big sister Engadget just rolled out a shiny new iPad app featuring a ton of stuff like Evernote and Instapaper integration, support for the Engadget podcast and much, much more. Oh, did you know there's an Engadget Podcast Bingo App as well? It's true. This is not a dream. Get your greasy fingers out of that bag of chips and swipe your gadget ignorance away today. It's free, so the most you'll lose is hours of sleep basking in the big E's glow.

Just a note: No, there's no TUAW iPad app coming soon. We are working on an update to our iPhone app as we speak, however. Plus, we've got a few other surprises coming in 2011. Stay tuned!

  • Band streams concert live via iOS app
A band named Everything, Everything is streaming a concert live today from London, and they're sharing that content on the App Store. NME says that the Manchester band has released a free app for iOS that will not only stream the show live, but will eventually have an archive of the show available, along with information about the band and backstage pre- and post-show access.

Unfortunately, I don't know if everything is working as planned -- the concert has probably finished up by now, and I don't see the app live in the US App Store, even though it was supposed to have been released worldwide. It's possible that the band figured they'd release the app quickly, without realizing that Apple's approval process is a little busy around this time of year.

But at any rate, it's an interesting idea. We've already seen musical acts use Apple's platform to share content with fans, and live streaming shows as a "virtual ticket" is another cool idea that even smaller bands can use to gain an audience. I think we'll see more of this in the future (and maybe then it won't be so lost in the huge rush of apps during this holiday season).

  • mSpot brings iTunes streaming to the iPhone
TUAW has been watching users' need to stream music from the cloud for a while, especially since Apple acquired Lala some time ago. Understandably, we were a little disappointed when we found out that an official cloud-based iTunes would probably be limited in scope.

This roller coaster of emotion leaves us especially excited to see mSpot Music hit the App Store. The mSpot service allows you store your iTunes collection on the web in what mSpot calls your "music locker." Once you've put that music online, you can stream it to your computer, iPad or iPhone. Your music lives in the cloud on mSpot's service and is simply played on whichever device you'd like.

Storage for your music is free up to the first 2GBs, which translates to about 1,600 music files. You can pay $3.99 a month for 40GBs of music, if you find the first 2GBs inadequate.

  • PhotoPal is a powerful but easy to use iPad photo editor

PhotoPal, on sale for US $0.99 until December 20th, is aimed at the novice photographer who wants to do some pretty serious editing of images on the iPad. Fortunately, Apple's tablet is well suited to this kind of work, simply because of the larger screen. The downside is that without a camera, the only photos to edit on the iPad are those that you download or sync to the device.

That said, PhotoPal has a lot of nice and easy to use features. This latest version adds a red eye removal tool, a spot healing tool, and clear, detailed help. The app contains the kinds of things you expect in a photo editing program, including level adjustment, color temperature, hue/saturation, shadows and color balance. It also has some higher end features like shadow detail, noise removal, sharpening and gamma adjustment.

There is also a nice option that lets you save your images to, or import them from, a folder that is visible in iTunes when your iPad is connected to your Mac. Of course, you can also open your iPad photo albums, or take a picture in via the clipboard. Your finished images can be saved to the iPad, or sent via email, Twitter, Flickr or Facebook.

  • TUAW TV Live: EyeTV HD, MacBook Air, and a Newton for the 21st Century

Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another episode of TUAW TV Live! This should prove to be a lively and fun episode of the show, since I have a review of the Elgato EyeTV HD "Mac DVR" queued up to show you. This is a great idea if you have a traditional cable or satellite TV box and you wish to view or record TV shows in full HD on your Mac. I'll have a full review of the EyeTV HD soon, along with a giveaway, but you can get a preview of the device today.

In addition, I'll entertain questions about the 11" MacBook Air. I've had it for a week now, and find it to be a very fast, capable, and compact Mac. Finally, I'll show a video and demo of a new iPad app that brings back memories of the Apple Newton MessagePad.

How can you join in on the fun? From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application.

We haven't neglected our iPad users, since you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. And one final note -- if the show has started and you're seeing a previously recorded show instead of the livestream, you can always pop on over to ustream.tv/tuaw to join the show in progress. See you there!

  • A call for more storage in iOS devices
2GB-MO-diskBack in the olden days, when I bought my first Disk ][ to hang onto my Apple ][ Plus, I was amazed at how much the 140KB floppy drive could store. After using it for a while, I was sure that it was big enough to hold every program I'd ever buy, and most of the programs my kids would need as well. Nowadays, of course, I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS and a 64GB iPad, and I'm out of room.

The release of Riven brought into focus just how crazy this all is. Riven weighs in at 1.01GB and requires you to have 2GB of free storage just to install it. I don't blame the game itself -- in fact, I played it when it was the first DVD-based game ever for the Mac, replacing five CD-ROMs. The graphics were superb, and I understand that they require lots of memory to hold them, but really! I took a look at some of the larger iOS apps I currently have installed, and Treasure Island, the Experience is the largest, weighing in at 468MB, or nearly half a GB. The next seven biggest range between 393.7MB and 286.3MB, adding up to over 2GB. And I'm not even a game player -- if you installed the HD version of Rage recently, you had to clear up 744MB of space for that one alone. These apps are mostly recent releases, and I don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

  • TextExpander 3.2.2 available, fixes auto-capitalization bugs

TextExpander, a very useful application which will automatically expand various text macros for you, has been updated to 3.2.2. The release notes indicate that 3.2.1 was submitted to the Mac App Store, and that Dropbox syncing had been improved.

The Smile Software blog also notes that auto-capitalization has also been improved, solving many of the annoying issues with the recent feature. Notably, if you switched from one app to another and then back, TextExpander sometimes thought that was a new sentence and auto-capitalized it. There are some other notes that users should read for more details.

TextExpander also has a new welcome screen -- presumably to help new users who find and download the app via the Mac App Store -- which includes video tutorials and links to additional help files. Users can download the new version right now.

  • iTunes 10.1.1 is available in Software Update

iTunes 10.1.1 is ready for your approval via Software Update. This looks like a minor bug fix update with no new features. Here are the fixes:

    • Addresses an issue where some music videos might not play on Macs with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 or 9600 graphics
    • Fixes an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when deleting a playlist that has the iTunes Sidebar showing
    • Fixes an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit when connecting an iPod to a PowerPC equipped Mac
    • Addresses an issue where some music videos might not sync to an iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Note: A number of commenters have reported that this update doesn't work. I tried it myself and after applying the update, see what I got after the break.

  • TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET -- EyeTV HD, one week with a MacBook Air, and more

Whenever I need to think of a topic for TUAW TV Live, I just look around my cluttered (or is it messy?) office and I usually find inspiration.

Today's inspiration comes from a device that should have been reviewed long ago -- Elgato's EyeTV HD (US$199.95), a Mac-based DVR / Tuner that works with satellite and cable HD boxes. I'll have a full review of the EyeTV HD in the next few days, but viewers will get to see this device in action this afternoon.

I've also had the 11" MacBook Air for a week now, and I'll fill you in on the details as part of the show. The action all starts at 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) here at TUAW.com. If you've never watched the show before, it combines live streaming video, taped segments, and an interactive user chat for a fun-filled hour of rampant Apple fanboyism.

For complete instructions on how to watch the stream and join the chat, come back to TUAW a few minutes before 5 PM ET. See you then!

  • Apple awarded patents for RF synchronization, Time Machine, and more

Yesterday was a busy day for the gnomes at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as they awarded 19 patents to Apple for intellectual property ranging from "RF Pulse Synchronization for Data Acquisition Operations" to a couple of ideas that are implemented in Time Machine. All were reported on by the eagle-eyed bloggers at Patently Apple.

The Time Machine patents cover navigation of backups and a method of resolving conflicts when restoring files from a backup. The first patent describes the method in which users can navigate through backup snapshots to find a file to restore, while the second provides a way of notifying users when a file being restored could overwrite an existing, newer file. Whether the Time Machine patents will help Apple to appeal a patent infringement judgment paid to another company earlier this year is unknown at this time.

There were also four patents dealing with iPhone and iTunes, one of which describes the method in which the iPhone handles audio playback and call conferencing, while the other three look at aspects of the presentation, download, and sale of media in the iTunes Store. Several of the changes described in the patent actually showed up in iTunes in 2004; it takes that long for some patents to be awarded.

Apple's fascination with flash memory was rewarded with another pair of patents, while video fanatics might find a patent on "Encoding a Transparency (Alpha) Channel in a Video Bitstream" to be exciting reading.

  • Evernote 2.0 for Mac is now available

It was just two weeks ago that we looked at the Evernote for Mac beta. Today Evernote 2.0 for Mac is finally available, with a slew of new features like notebooks stacks and sharing, UI improvements and more. Here's a quick look at Evernote 2.0 for Mac.

One of the marquee features is notebook stacks, and it's what I'm most eager to play with. You've got many notebooks in Evernote, some on related topics. Sacks lets you organize those into a single location. Create stacks by dropping related notebooks on top of each other, and click the disclosure triangle to see what's in there.

Another cool feature is notebook sharing right from the app. This was previously only available through a browser. To get started, just tap the new Shared button. You'll see a list of notebooks. To share that awesome Macramé notebook with your Aunt Shirley, just click the Start Sharing button and you're off. Notebooks can also be shared with the world at large or a group in addition to individual sharing.

There's a lot more, like a re-designed left panel, support for up to 250 notebooks and the ability to attach files to a note. We'll have a more thorough review up soon. Until then, grab it and start playing!

  • Apple climbs to 5th place in July-Sept. Japan cellphone market
iphone ranking japanThe Mainichi Daily News and Japan Today are citing a "market research institute" which has ranked the iPhone fifth place in Japan's dense cell phone market. This is for the July-September rankings, as Apple was seventh in the April-June quarter. Sharp is still the market leader in Japan, with Panasonic, Fujitsu and Kyocera following before Apple's singular smartphone offering.

Not bad, especially considering the iPod is in a tight race now with Sony's Walkman. Then there's the Japanese publishers who have censured Apple thanks to some App Store shenanigans. Still, Apple's iPhone appears to be moving steadily up the ranks in a country known to have a penchant for embracing new gadgets.

  • Daylite Touch for iPad brings project management to your fingertips

The folks at Marketcircle have released Daylite Touch for the iPad, which joins the iPhone and desktop versions to further extend the productivity solution across Apple's hardware. You can read this blog post from Marketcircle about the app.

Much more than a task tracker, Daylite offers complete project management for individuals and large companies alike. We've been beta testing the iPad app for a while now, and we are glad to share our experiences with you.

Please note that Daylite 3.13, also available today, is required to run Daylite Touch 1.6. Some other good news from Marketcircle is that they've changed the licensing structure. Now it's based on a per-user basis (instead of per device), as customers often use more than one iOS device.

    Getting started

As we said, Daylite includes everything you want: projects and tasks, contact management, a calendar, leads (they call them "Opportunities") and more. You can use it as an individual, but its power becomes obvious when managing a team. The iPhone app added portability, allowing workers in the field to access information in a shared database via Daylite Server. Since changes made on the iPhone are synchronized in real time with the desktop version, remote workers and office-bound supervisors can stay on the same page. It works quite well. So why add the iPad?

  • iBooks 1.2 now available from the App Store
Apple has released iBooks 1.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with some swell new features. First, it offers support for full illustrations (you know, just like real books). It will also create collections of your books and PDFs, which is quite nice. To create a collection, simply tap the collections button and choose a name. To add a book, tap Edit and then Move. Move between collections by swiping left and right.

AirPrint is also supported (as long as you're one of The Chosen with a compatible printer) for printing PDFs and notes in books, and Apple has even managed to fit more words on a page by automatically hyphenating text (that feature is restricted to iOS 4.2).

Go and grab it, iBook readers. It's available now.

  • iBookstore approved for Canada, Rogers to unlock iPhones
The Canadian government approved the Apple iBookstore today, paving the way for Canadian authors to offer their books for sale on the iOS platform. Apple's iBookstore launched internationally on May 28th, but the Canadian government had concerns about the cultural effects of this Apple product. Instead of the full version, Apple rolled out a limited version of the iBookstore, populated with select U.S. and public domain titles. Meanwhile, the government scrutinized Apple's iBookstore to confirm it helped to advance Canada's cultural heritage and national identity. After several months of review, the government reached a deal with Apple to bring the full iBookstore to Canada. The Canadian version will be used to promote Canadian and Aboriginal authors and publishers, both in Canada and internationally. Apple will also help Canadian authors and publishers with the eBook creation process.

Today brings more good news to Canadians who have a contract-free iPhone on the wireless carrier, Rogers. According to a report from iPhone in Canada, Rogers is reportedly unlocking iPhones for customers who have finished out their contract or bought their handset at the unsubsidized price. To be eligible for this unlocking, customers must be up-to-date with payments and contract-free for at least 30 days before unlocking. A $50 fee is required for the unlocking and the iPhone must be in Rogers equipment history, i.e., you cannot walk into a Rogers store with a random iPhone you bought off the street and expect the carrier to unlock it. This report has not been confirmed by Rogers so may want to give your local store a call before you start to dream about using your iPhone on another carrier.

  • Red Nova for iPhone and iPad now available, features iPhone-to-iPad controls
red novaRed Nova is now available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. An Asteroids-like shooter, Red Nova sacrifices high detail for high framerates and provides frenetic but satisfying gameplay. The game is integrated into Apple's Game Center for leaderboards and achievements, comes with Retina Display graphics and has various difficulty levels. Also, the game is universal and will run on your iPad as well as your iPhone.

What is really interesting is that Red Nova is extending the game concept first started by Chopper 2 where you can can use your iPhone as the controller and play the game on your iPad. As with Chopper 2, it takes a little while to get used to having the controls on the iPhone, but the idea is great.

We'll have a full review later this week, but for now check out the iPhone-to-iPad gameplay on the next page.

  • Toshiba denies rumor Apple will invest in display factory

Remember the factory that Toshiba and Apple are supposed to be building together? According to DigiTimes, it turns out that Toshiba is not actually on board with the idea. Currently, Toshiba is still planning to build the new plant which will double its output of small- to medium-sized displays. Although Apple is not an investor, it will likely reap the benefits of additional capacity via a possible decrease in the per unit cost of the displays.

One can only assume that the added capacity will aid in meeting the demand increase when Apple finally ships the white iPhone in 2011.

  • 3-in-1 iPad camera connection kit is triple the goodness in one package

Here at TUAW, most of the bloggers are huge fans of devices featuring multiple levels of functionality jammed into one little box (this probably has something to do with a lifelong fascination with Swiss Army Knives.)

That's why there were smiles all around when M.I.C.Gadget, a blog that follows stories about gizmos that are, uh, Made In China, had a story about a new 3-in-1 iPad camera connection kit. As you know, the Apple equivalent sells for US$29 and is made up of two separate dongles. Two dongles = twice as much opportunity to lose one of them.

This little 3-in-1 kit features the USB port and SD card reader that make up the Apple connection kit, but there's one more thing -- a micro-SD card reader as well. Boom! But wait, there's more! The connection kit comes in black or white, which will be a nightmare for people who have problems making decisions.

Want to buy one? They're available for US$29.90 from the M.I.C. Gadget Store, but act now to avoid bitter disappointment. There are only 25 of the kits left in stock as of this morning...

  • DirecTV survey suggests NFL Sunday Ticket on Apple TV
    DirecTV Apple TV survey
A recent marketing research survey from DirecTV suggests its popular NFL Sunday Ticket may land on the Apple TV. The survey quizzes DirecTV customers about different bundles and pricing plans for both the digital and regular Sunday Ticket subscription. A footnote for the Internet-based, digital version offers the option for watching Sunday Ticket on your TV when it is connected to an Apple TV, as well as a Boxee Box or a Roku player. While far from a confirmation, these surveys are often used to gauge the potential interest in a feature before it is rolled out.

Currently, the NFL Sunday Ticket lets you watch every game, every Sunday on your TV via satellite or over the Internet. The Internet version is separate from the satellite service and streams HD-quality football to your desktop PC or a mobile device including the iPhone and the iPad. Yes, the iPad app is an option for catching up on the games while lying on the couch, but watching football on the big screen via your Apple TV would be so sweet. Fingers crossed that this survey is a harbinger of good things to come for football fans that own an Apple TV.

  • Mac Orchard closing down
Drew Saur, founder of The Mac Orchard, confirmed today that he is permanently shutting down his popular applications repository. Those that follow The Mac Orchard may have noticed that Saur stopped updating the website in July. He has decided to extend this hiatus and said his final good-bye today. For the last 15 years, The Mac Orchard website has been a haven for Mac users looking for Internet software. Many Mac users, especially in the early days, would visit The Mac Orchard to download the latest Usenet reader or IRC client, read user reviews, and get Drew's hand picked selections.

Over the years, Internet usage has evolved and many of these older network protocols, like NNTP, now have web-based counterparts. The debut and subsequent improvement of Mac OS X also changed application usage patterns. Mac users no longer need an alternative email client or web browser as the native mail client and Safari web browser are sufficient for most people. The nail in the coffin was Apple's announcement that it is bringing its App Store to Mac OS X. The Mac App Store will provide a bounty of applications and user reviews, all of which are easily accesible from the user's desktop. W hen the Mac App Store rolls out sometime next year, there will be little utility in maintaining a dedicated website that has a similar function.

There is some good news in this announcement. Though Saur will not update the site, The Mac Orchard is not disappearing completely. The domain will remain in Saur's possession and he will convert the website to something very different. Power users who still use some of this software will be happy to know that most of the content on the website is being transferred to a third-party. Saur will make an announcement about this transfer soon. Saur also re-assures the community that he will still be around to answer the occasional question.

  • Xmarks finds new owner, isn't going anywhere

Look at that -- while I was sad to hear that my favorite bookmark syncing service Xmarks would be calling it quits after trying and failing to find a profitable business model, its users stepped in to support the service, and at the beginning of this month, Xmarks announced that it would be acquired by password manager LastPass without any interruption in service. That's great news; the basic syncing service will stay free, and there will now be two premium services available with the company. Premium membership in LastPass will get all of the password manager's features, and premium Xmarks service will enable priority support, syncing with mobile apps and more. Both services are available for US$12 each yearly, or $20 a year for the whole shebang.

It sounds like this is a great deal for both companies, and together, the two services should be able to offer up some excellent features to customers both old and new. I'm just glad my current Xmarks service isn't dying; the browser add-ons let me share passwords and bookmarks across all of my Mac and PC browsers quickly and easily. Great to see that one of the most valuable sharing services I use has found a new lease on life.

    Thanks, Chris!

  • TUAW's Daily App: Max Adventure
Max Adventure has been quite a while in the making. I first saw it at 360iDev earlier this year, and then again at WWDC, where we met up with the husband-and-wife team of Imangi Studios to talk about how it was coming along during development. You may have also seen this video of a level being made in the game. Finally, everything is done, and a few days ago, the game itself showed up on the App Store. It's a hit so far, too. Even though it's a dual-stick shooter, a genre that's been done to death on the iPhone, Max Adventure's got a fun and original sense of humor -- you play a little kid fighting off parent-kidnapping aliens around the neighborhood.

There's an excellent story mode to play through, with progression, power-ups and quests to find and do, and if you finish that, there's a survival mode as well, complete with Game Center achievements and leaderboards. Just as you'd expect from Imangi, the folks behind Harbor Master (who recently updated their original app with Retina Display graphics just for the heck of it), the quality is excellent all around. The team at Imangi has put a whole lot of love into this one, and it shows.

At the introductory price of just 99 cents (for the universal app!), Max Adventure is a bargain, even during the crowded holiday season. Odds are you've already picked up a few games this year, but even if that's the case, go find another buck in your couch because this one's a must-buy.

  • Riven: The Sequel to Myst now available for iPhone

Riven, the sequel to Cyan Worlds' bestselling game Myst, is now available on the App Store. The original version of Riven came out in 1997 for multiple systems and was widely acclaimed; 13 years later, Riven has an opportunity to reach an entirely new audience of gamers.

In August of 2008, Cyan announced that they'd port Myst to the iPhone, and it became available in July of 2009. Following the success of the original Myst on iOS, we heard back in February that Riven would be coming to the iPhone "by early summer at the latest." In Cyan Worlds' defense, they didn't say which hemisphere's summer they were talking about...

Riven is available for US$5.99 and is a huge download -- it's over a gigabyte, and due to iOS installation quirkiness, the game requires 2GB of free space before it will install on your iOS device of choice. Riven also has Game Center integration, but there doesn't appear to be an iPad-specific version of the app available. I never played the original version of Riven, but for six bucks I might give it a look... assuming I can find room for it in my monthly download cap, that is.

  • SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone updated with better quality video and a new guide

SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPod touch has been updated to version 2.0. The guide is improved, matching the iPad version, and video streaming quality is improved if you have a Slingbox SOLO or Pro-HD model.

Happily, older Slingboxes will still work with this update, but you won't get the highest level of picture quality. The update is free if you previously bought the stratospherically priced (US $29.99) app. To get customers on the newer hardware, the Sling people are offering upgrades at $50.00 off on a Slingbox PRO-HD or SOLO or $150.00 off of a refurbished PRO-HD.

Sling tech support notes that users with the SOLO or HD-PRO will have to update the software on their desktop machines as well. Users should also be reminded that if they have both an iPhone and iPad and are buying the apps for the first time, they each sell for $29.99. Ouch.

  • Apple issues 4.1.1 update for Apple TV
We've gotten a few reports that Apple has released a minor build update for the new Apple TV. Users aren't reporting any obvious new features or specific performance upgrades with the brand new 4.2.1 4.1.1 update, so it's likely that this latest Apple TV update is just for bug fixes. Not all users are seeing the update quite yet, but it should propagate to everybody before long.

MacRumors notes that the Apple TV 4.1.1 update is labeled Build 8C154. The previous Apple TV iOS 4.1 was Build 8C150. If you Apple TV owners see any differences, let us know in the comments.
