  • Want the Radio Shack discount? You're probably out of luck

If you were waiting until today to take advantage of Radio Shack's deep, deep discount on an iPhone, you're most likely out of luck. The promotion caused a nationwide RS shortage of iPhone inventory, and AppleInsider contacted a number of the stores on Friday to find that all but one have run out of stock.

This isn't the first time "The Shack's" promos caused a run on the iPhone. The company offered a similar kickback program when the iPhone 4 was first launched. But so many took advantage of the offer that after the initial pre-orders, no new phones came in for the remainder of the program's run.

For those who missed out on Radio Shack's deal, maybe they had better luck at Best Buy's one-day sale.

  • Snapstick could use your iPhone to program your television
The video after the break shows off a product called Snapstick, though there's not actually a product yet, just more of an idea. The idea is that you select a bit of web content (like a YouTube video or Hulu show) on your phone, and then use a flicking motion to send that content up to a bigger screen like your TV. The company is really excited about the 'snapping" motion, but the idea is that you can use your phone to control what's shown on screen, and pull that from anywhere on the web.

At this point it's all vaporware, unfortunately -- you'll obviously need something plugged into your television, whether that's an official Snapstick piece of hardware, or something like an Xbox 360 or an Apple TV that's designed to actually show that content off. But however they figure it out, the idea will be that you can use an iPhone app to program and then share web content on your television.

Interested? Doesn't seem to me like much more than a glorified web browser, but Snapstick's taking sign-ups for a private beta right now. We'll have to see how this pans out.

  • Real Racing 2 coming to iOS December 16th
After a few weeks of teasing and hints, Firemint has finally revealed all about its upcoming Real Racing 2 game for iOS, and it looks extremely impressive. The first game in the series is still one of the most popular and well done racing games in the App Store, and Firemint is upping the ante high for the second go-round. Real Racing 2 will feature 30 licensed cars from brands like Ford, Jaguar, Volkswagen and McLaren, and will pit those vehicles against each other in a 16-car grid both online and offline. There will be five game modes to play through, including a full-featured career mode, and forty miles of track to race across 15 different locations. The game will also offer Game Center integration, and a number of different control options to drive however you want.

Firemint was kind enough to send out an early copy of the game, so we'll be kicking the tires and running a few laps to see how it plays before release. Meanwhile if you're interested in what seems destined to be one of the best iOS racing games so far, stay tuned -- the game will be out on December 16, available in the App Store for $9.99 for iPhone and iPod touch.

  • 360 MacDev: Josh Abernathy on the mechanics of good UI design
As the 360 MacDev conference continued in Denver today, the attendees had a chance to stuff their faces with apple pie courtesy of a vendor, and then sat down to here a talk by Josh Abernathy of Maybe Apps on the mechanics of good UI design. Josh started by making a distinction between graphic design (making something pretty) and interaction design (making something that is a joy to use).

Abernathy was primarily focused on the graphic design of applications. He suggested that many developers hire a graphic designer to do this job, as programmers aren't necessarily good designers. Pixie, a UI "explorer" that is included in the Apple Developer Tools, was noted as a simple and useful assistant for seeing the closeup details of how other developers have achieved a certain effect.

Keeping a scrapbook of good designs is another hint that Abernathy brought up. He wasn't advocating stealing user interface elements -- something that several developers I talked with at lunch have had to put up with during the last few weeks -- but instead to use those elements as an inspiration for future designs. Abernathy suggested visiting Flyosity.com and 365psd.com for excellent hints on how to use graphic tools like Photoshop in designing user interfaces.

  • Gorillaz iPad album coming for free on Christmas
If you were excited to hear that Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn has made an album completely on the iPad, get ready to have a very merry Christmas: it's coming out on December 25th, Christmas Day, and Albarn is giving it away for completely free. On Christmas Eve, the band will release a new video for one of the songs, and then on the holiday itself, fans will be able to get the whole album for free.

And why is Albarn releasing it right away on Christmas Day? "If I left it until the New Year to release it," he tells the media, "then the cynics out there would say, 'Oh well, it's been tampered with.' But if I put it out now, they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since." In other words, he wants to make sure that when people hear this album, they really do believe it was made completely on an iPad.

That's pretty awesome. Can't wait to hear the album -- apparently it'll be part of the Advent Calendar running on the website right now, so go sign up there if you want to be ready.

  • TUAW Holiday Gift Guide: iPhone GPS apps

Welcome to the TUAW Holiday Gift Guide! We've sorted the treasure from the junk and are serving up suggestions to make your holiday gift-giving a little easier.

Well, another holiday approaches, and it's time for me to survey the field of apps that will help get you from here to there in a minimum of time and hassle.

I surveyed these apps last year, and some things have changed for the better. Prices are lower, there are more regional options (so you can buy a map that fits where you might be driving), and the addition of multi-tasking in iOS 4 makes a big difference to how useful these apps can be.

I think one of the biggest changes from last year is that the apps are now so solid and full featured that I can't think of a compelling reason to buy any of the dedicated GPS devices. With so many people using smartphones, I suspect these all in one GPS navigators will suffer diminished sales and interest.

  • Mac App Store has software developers optimistic
    Mac App Store
With the Mac App Store set to launch in January 2011, software developers are excited about the prospect of the success of Apple's mobile App Store crossing over to the desktop market. While most OS X software will need to be rewritten in order to work within the confines of the new store, companies are interested in seeing how well their products can do in front of a larger audience, even if a lower price point is needed for those customers used to buying less expensive apps online. Talking to Fortune Magazine, Delicious Library's Wil Shipley said that "the first people who were on the iPhone App Store did incredibly well -- they basically made a fortune," and I imagine there are many developers thinking the exact same thing.

Apple projects that prices for their own apps will fall between $15-$20, but developers selling their own software will get a 70 percent cut of sales just as they do in the iOS store. While this could potentially eat into the profit margins they are used to when selling on their own, they are ever hopeful that Apple's users will do as much shopping in the Mac App Store as they currently do in the iOS App Store. TUAW's own Brett Terpstra polled several developers back in October about their initial reactions to the Mac App Store, and most of them think this is going to be a good opportunity for them. We'll have to see -- certainly the Mac App Store should mirror some of the circumstances of the iOS App Store, but there are probably some surprises "in store" as well.

  • Steve Jobs, in doll form
Steve Jobs showed up on my doorstep today...and he's a lot smaller in person. Okay, no, not the real Steve Jobs, but his incredible lifelike miniature. Many of you probably remember the big uproar a few weeks back that Apple had about M.I.C Gadget, a blog about Chinese life and subculture, manufacturing a doll in the great one's likeness. And now I can see why. After some very generous Christmas elves just sent me one of the coveted Steve Jobs dolls, I'm struck by just how lifelike it is.

Everything from the detail on the iPhone in his hand to the crow's feet around his eyes are eerily realistic. More so, the quality of the figurine is, well... Apple-level. The paint job is stunning. The Apple logo base is precisely carved and solid in the hand. Steve's glasses are made of wire frame and removable. Even the pattern in his New Balance shoes resemble the ones he actually wears.

When the doll went on sale for US$79.99, many scoffed at its price. But given it was limited to 300 units and the quality of the craftsmanship ended up being quite high, the company wasn't asking too much for it in my opinion. Too bad Apple quelled the doll and it never made it to open market. Something tells me the ones that did escape Hong Kong are going to be selling for premiums in the years to come as this is sure to be one of the hottest Apple collectibles ever.

I've added a gallery below that shows off some of the intricate details of the figurine.

  • 360 MacDev: Jay "saurik" Freeman on the jailbreak store for Mac apps

When it comes to jailbreaking, there's probably no name as familiar to the development community than that of Jay "saurik" Freeman. Jay is the brain behind the Cydia App Store, and this morning he gave the attendees of 360|MacDev an overview of his upcoming jailbreak store for Mac OS X, cycript, and Cydia Substrate.

Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.

Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available "within weeks." With today's news that the Mac App Store will not support in-app purchases, something that is critical to the freemium app model that is so successful in the iOS world, a Mac Cydia might be just the web store for a number of Mac developers.

Before discussing the Mac Cydia, however, Freeman spent quite a while taking Apple to task for their horrible developer documentation and for the restrictions that are common in the Apple development world. He foresees many of Apple's restrictions moving to the Mac App Store.

Developers who are interested in getting their products into Mac Cydia were told to contact an employee at patrick at saurikit.com for further details.

  • iPad cutting board a good gift for foodies and techies alike
iPad Cutting BoardCan't afford to get that special someone an iPad or a gift card good for the purchase of an iPad? Don't have a grandma that can quilt you an iPhone? Well, if your gift recipient happens to like spending time in the kitchen, they may appreciate this iPad Cutting Board. Laser cut from a chunk of hardy beechwood, it's covered with app icons for random food products -- an egg, tea, cheese, bread, butter -- and what looks like an icon for a pharmaceutical company. Guess the creator wants to make sure you take your vitamins, too!

The iPad Cutting Board is available for €15 (US $19.85), which is a far cry from the price of a real iPad. Granted it won't time a Thanksgiving dinner for them, but a cook who loves gadgets would definitely appreciate the thought.

  • Angry Birds developers to launch 'Bad Piggy Bank' mobile payment system
Angry BirdsAfter millions of downloads of their popular game Angry Birds and a plan to take over the gaming world, Rovio is looking to get a little more from users; they now want to implement a mobile payment system inside the game itself. In an effort to grab a few more bucks from impulsive buyers/gamers they are launching Bad Piggy Bank, which with just a touch of a button will let customers make in-app game purchases without a credit card -- the price of anything they buy will just be added to their monthly cell phone bill.

Rovio is based in Helsinki, Finland and is initially putting the payment system in place on Android with Elisa, the country's biggest telecom provider, but expects to roll the service out worldwide sometime in 2011. While Apple allows users to upgrade 'in-app' from free to paid versions and the buying and unlocking of special features, I do question if they would ever allow something like Bad Piggy Bank to purchase other Rovio games without a link going back to the App Store.

However, I can say that if it were in place I would probably have bought every version of Angry Birds by now, since I cannot seem to stop playing it.

  • iTunes welcomes The Smiths

Some bands are bigger than others, it's true, but stop me if you think you've heard this one before: a major British act, long absent from the iTunes store, has appeared with its full catalog for sale. No, it's not The Beatles -- it's the delicious sounds of Johnny Marr and Morrissey in The Smiths.

If you came of age in the 1980s, The Smiths might be just as important to your musical upbringing as The Beatles were for a previous generation of rock fans. For me, this is a great chance to retire those ancient cassette copies of Meat is Murder and Strangeways, Here We Come.

While a greatest-hits compilation from The Smiths was previously available, the band's Ping page announced the rest of the releases earlier this week.

Thanks to reader Eric for the heads-up.

  • Survey finds iPad negatively affecting print media

    New York Times iPad app

Bad news for members of the newspaper industry that expect to use digital media to save their print editions. A recent survey from the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) shows that iPad owners are more likely to read news on their iPad than a printed newspaper. RJI surveyed over 1,600 iPad owners and asked them about their usage habits, especially as it concerns reading and news consumption.

Not unexpectedly, 84.4% of iPad owners primarily use their iPad to follow breaking news and current events. As a result, newspaper subscriptions, once the staple of the newspaper industry, are being cannibalized by the iPad. Slightly more than 30% of iPad owners do not subscribe to a newspaper, preferring to consume news on their tablet device. Of the 931 respondents that have a newspaper subscription and read an hour's worth of news each day on their iPad, more than half (58.1%) intend to cancel their newspaper subscriptions within six months. A growing 10.7% have already canceled their subscription and have switched to iPad-only reading.

This is not the first time we have seen similar headlines. James Murdoch, head of News Corp's Asian/European operations, confirmed that iPhone and iPad apps were "much more cannibalistic" than websites when it came to newspaper subscriptions. This deleterious effect is seen even at big-name websites like the Wall Street Journal and the Times of London.

While this trend may ultimately curtail print editions, it also creates a new distribution method for those newspapers willing to move out of their comfort zone. Several large newspapers, including the WSJ, The New York TImes, and the London-based City A.M., are making that transition and have released iPad apps. Those that have not embraced the iPad may be encouraged to adopt this medium when Apple rolls out support for subscription-based pricing, a feature expected to debut in iOS 4.3.

  • Mac App Store won't support Game Center, in-app purchases

With the launch of the Mac App Store about a month away, many developers are preparing their apps for distribution in a whole new way. However, they're finding that the store won't offer all of the features of its iOS counterpart, at least in its initial release. Specifically, Game Center and in-app purchases aren't supported.

9to5 Mac reports that Apple has informed developers of the news with two curt messages: "Note: In app purchases are not available for Mac OS X apps" and "Note: Game Center is not available for Mac OS X apps." That's too bad, as in-app purchases could have offered interesting revenue options for Mac OS X developers, and it would be fun to have games of Flight Control HD for the Mac (our review here), for example, count towards one's Game Center rankings.

Still, this doesn't mean those features will never be a part of the Mac App Store. We'd rather see Apple exercise the restraint necessary to get the initial release right than cram in everything.

  • Ask TUAW: MacBook Pro cleaning, Mac maintenance, streaming video and more

Welcome back to another edition of our weekly Q & A column, Ask TUAW. Each week this column will appear with questions and answers. If you have questions for the following week's column, drop them in the comments, and I will do my best to get to them.

When asking a question, please include which machine you're using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we'll assume you're running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify). If you're asking an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad question, be sure to note which model and version of iOS you have.

For this week we've got a new batch of questions about how to stream video from a Mac, proper laptop cleaning, finding applications easily, Mac maintenance and more.

    Julie asks

I'm new to the Mac after switching from Windows. Are there any maintenance tasks like defragmenting the hard drive I should perform to keep it running smoothly?

  • Mac 101: Changing the default web browser in OS X

Apple introduced the Safari browser in January of 2003. Since then, it's matured to include extensions, an RSS reader and even a Windows counterpart. Still, many users prefer another browser. Since Safari is set as the default on every new Mac, you'll have to make the switch manually. Otherwise, Safari will launch whenever a browser is called for (clicking a link in an email message, for example), instead of your preferred browser. Here's how to change that.

First, launch Safari. From the Preferences menu, select General. At the top of the screen you'll see a drop-down labeled "Default Web Browser." Click it, hit Select and then navigate to your choice. That's it. From that point on, your Mac will use your selection as the default.

If you're in the habit of switching back and forth between default browsers (for example, to test your website for different users), the $12 Choosy utility may give you the flexibility you need.

  • 360 MacDev Keynote: Mike Lee's "Dirty Jokes and Code"

360|MacDev is underway in Denver, Colorado, and it's starting with a bang. While many developer conferences begin with a boring, bland, and somewhat cookie-cutter keynote, this morning's keynote was a NSFW -- but definitely memorable -- talk laced with dirty jokes by Mike Lee (at right).

Mike has done a lot of coding on some of the more popular software for Mac and iOS, including Delicious Library and Tap Tap Revenge, and is famous for his insightful talks on software design.

The talk, entitled "Dirty Jokes and Code," was more than just the jokes, though. Through applicable off-color jokes, Lee essentially taught the attendees a lot of the important facets of how to produce apps that are incredibly useful and usable for buyers. Whether it was a rant against overuse of splash screens, a warning about errors in localizing software, or how one little issue can cause a user to go ballistic, Lee got his point across to the attendees.

  • Cobra iPhone radar detector useful for dodging tickets, driving recklessly

Your iPhone or iPod touch can handle a lot of tasks in your car. We use them as GPS navigators, MP3 players, and as a way to keep the kids from killing each other in the back seat. Now Cobra, that long-time creator of automobile radar detectors, has come up with a very useful device and app that might keep you from getting your driver's license revoked.

Cobra iRadar (US$169.95) uses Bluetooth to link an iOS app running on an iPhone or iPod touch and an iRadar detector unit. The app alerts drivers to speed and red light cameras, speed traps, and intersections with a history of accidents. Visual alerts show up on the iPhone, noting the type of radar or laser being used to track your speed. From the app, drivers can also control the settings on the radar detector.

Cobra touts the iRadar as the "most user-friendly detector device ever created," and the iOS interface seems intuitive to use. The iRadar could be the perfect Christmas gift for the iPhone-toting leadfoot in your family.

Please note that radar detector use may not be legal in some jurisdictions. TUAW reminds all our readers to always avoid distractions, focus on the road and drive prudently and safely.

  • Apple looking to hire CDMA-knowledgeable staff
A recent job posting on Apple's corporate job board loosely suggests Apple may be testing a CDMA iPhone. The posting for a Cellular Systems Performance Engineer went live December 9th and requires an individual knowledgeable in cellular technology, including standard GSM protocols (GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA) and CDMA.
The successful candidate will be tasked with handling protocol issues that arise from certification, interoperability, and field testing, the job post says, and they should also have experience with different carrier networks and infrastructures.

Normally, such a job listing would be overlooked as the requirement for experience with CDMA may be included by default. If you are a Cellular Systems Performance engineer, you most likely have experience with all the cellular technologies, not just one and this job listing reflects that diversity of skills.

Given all the rumors surrounding the CDMA iPhone, though, this is not exactly a normal time. In this particular case, the inclusion of CDMA and the job duties that focus on analyzing final stage test results may point to the CDMA iPhone.

Admittedly, hiring a Performance Engineer now is a bit late, but it is not that much of a stretch. Rumors suggest the CDMA iPhone may be prepping for an early 2011 launch which is a relatively wide launch window. This would put the handset in the final stages of testing and a quick hire could be done to help iron out all those final details.

  • Fring adds "dynamic video quality"

If you're a fan of FaceTime on your iPhone / iPod touch, but are frustrated with the Wi-Fi only restrictions, then Fring (the voice, video and instant chat app) is most likely your go-to app for video calling over 3G.

Since there's no sign of Skype implementing video calling on the iPhone over Wi-Fi (let alone 3G), and no one's yet to turn up to Apple's "open" FaceTime standard party, Fring is left holding the video calling over 3G fort for the likes of us. But they're not sitting back while the others catch up.

Fring has recently updated its app to include, amongst other improvements and enhancements, dynamic video quality, or DVQ, to its video calling. Basically, while always prioritizing audio, the quality of video will be automatically adjusted to the amount of bandwidth you have available at any given time.

If you're outdoors with a strong 3G signal, your video quality will be good. But if you're indoors with a poorer 3G signal, your video quality will be reduced to compensate for the lack of bandwidth. This will all happen behind the scenes, allowing you to have a cohesive video chat. Audio will remain unaffected.

We've tried it out for ourselves; it seems to work pretty well, though even on Wi-Fi we couldn't get anything near the quality of the video depicted in the Fring promo pictured above.

Fring is available free on the App Store, or go to updates on your iDevice for the latest version. Check out DVQ in action after the break.

  • The first Apple retail store has become a cult destination
A rather plain Apple retail store tucked away on the second floor of the over thirty-year-old Glendale Galleria mall in Calfornia has attained cult status by ostensibly being the first Apple store in existence. It opened on May 19, 2001 and was given the store designation number of 001. This is not news to a good number of Apple cognoscenti who regularly hang out at the store to soak in some of the historical Apple goodness, and others who make a pilgrimage to Glendale just for bragging rights.

Some people have been known to come to the store just to take a picture as a memento. Apple employees have been known to transfer to the Glendale store because of its hallowed status, and some customers say that the level of expertise of the staff surpasses other Apple stores.

Some think that the Glendale Galleria is a horribly run-down mall. This doesn't seem to bother those in the know who frequently stop by. It also doesn't bother Apple for that matter, since it's located close to several major Los Angeles freeways and brings in a good number of shoppers.

As with most things Apple, this is not without controversy. Another Apple store in the much higher-end Tysons Corner Mall in McLean, VA, opened the same day (and several hours earlier), but sadly did not attain the designation of retail store 001, so it can't claim the number one spot.

  • Ubuntu One music streaming app updated with AirPlay support

Download Squad tipped us off that the Ubuntu One Music app has been updated to support Apple's new AirPlay streaming system. As such, it can now play music from your iOS device via any Apple TV or Airport Express unit on your network.

Ubuntu One is a cloud storage service from the vendor of the popular Linux distribution of the same name. Much like MobileMe and Dropbox, it allows the user to upload files to cloud servers and to synchronize personal information such as calendars, contact lists, and bookmarks -- with support for Linux, Windows, and mobile devices.

Unlike the other services, however, Ubuntu One has a strong emphasis on music streaming. It has an integrated music store and allows users to supplant music purchases with uploads of their own music to their cloud space. Store-bought and uploaded files are both available for streaming back out.

The iOS app that was updated today is a client for receiving that streaming audio on your iOS devices, over WiFi or 3G connections. This differs from stream-music-from-home services like Simplify Media because it doesn't rely on you having a computer at home powered up to stream the music from -- the files come from the cloud.

There is a cost associated with using Ubuntu's system. The service offers 2GB of basic storage for free, but mobile support is $4 a month / $40 per year (the app itself is free) and extra storage, in blocks of 20GB, is $3 per month / $30 per year. As such, Ubuntu One is probably only really interesting to people with lots of Ubuntu computers in their life.

  • HP adds more printers to AirPrint-compatible list

With only a handful of HP printers being compatible with Apple's AirPrint -- after the disappointment of AirPrint's functionality being drastically scaled back in the final release of iOS 4.2 -- users have been left with two options if they want to print directly from their iOS 4.2 device.

One, get your hacking gloves on and install the necessary files from the developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.5 (which were pulled from the final public release). use one of the free or paid utilities to enable shared printing from your iPad via your Mac or PC. Or two, get your hands on one of the compatible HP printers.

Fortunately, option two is about to get a whole lot better, though it's still not ideal because you will have to buy a new printer if you don't already have one of these models -- the AirPrint capability is being added via a firmware update.

HP is adding six printers to the AirPrint availability menu shortly. The printers are all of the Officejet variety, but at least now there's a choice of more AirPrint compatible printers. If you already have one of these models, you're in luck: reader Eldon Brown reports that he updated the firmware on his 6500A Plus and the AirPrint capability was added automatically.

    The newly AirPrint-savvy models are:

    • HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One
    • HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One
    • HP Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One (pictured)
    • HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One
    • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus e-All-in-One
    • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium e-All-in-One

HP is also hosting firmware updates for several LaserJet and Photosmart models, which should enable AirPrint goodness:

    • Photosmart e-AiO (D110) (USA/Canada)
    • Photosmart Wireless e-AiO (B110) (EU, AP)
    • LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer (www.hp.com/go/airprint/M1536)
    • LaserJet Pro CM1415fn Color Multifunction Printer (www.hp.com/go/airprint/CM1415)
    • LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer (www.hp.com/go/airprint/CM1415)
    • LaserJet Pro CP1525n Color Printer (www.hp.com/go/airprint/CP1525)
    • LaserJet Pro CP1525nw Color Printer (www.hp.com/go/airprint/CP1525)

Of course, there is a third option. You could always sit tight and wait for Apple to unleash the full power of AirPrint -- hopefully sometime next year.

Post corrected to note that these are not new printers but are getting new firmware; also corrected reference to hacktivation process. GadgetVenue post referenced is incorrect.
