  • New 'iPad Is Amazing' ad touts iOS 4.2 features
iPad IsApple's latest iPad commercial, "iPad Is Amazing", is touting iOS 4.2's new features including AirPrint, AirPlay, multitasking, and folders. Seemingly trying to reign in some of those holiday shoppers, this new ad definitely offers up something for everyone in the family.

Just for the record, I will admit that bought an iPad when they were first announced. I will also admit that I returned it one week later, as I didn't feel that it did anything that my MacBook and iPhone couldn't already do at the time. Thinking back to that week I understand why I felt that way then, but with the new OS and all the apps available now I think I could definitely find a use for an iPad in my house today.

Click Read More to check out the new ad.

  • Add a number keypad to your Apple Wireless Keyboard
    LMP Wireless Keypad
Still find yourself reaching for the non-existent number keypad on your Apple Wireless Keyboard? Well, it looks like you may be in luck: Wireless Goodness has uncovered some information about LMP's new 28-key Bluetooth keypad. Running off two AA batteries and made from the same anodized aluminum finish that Apple is known for, this number pad can be attached to the right-hand side of your wireless keyboard mimicking a standard-sized keyboard layout. For those of you who want a little space between your keyboard and keypad, it can also be kept separate off to either side.

We've seen some interesting accessories for Apple's keyboards before like this carved wood keyboard tray, but this looks like this one could be a worthy investment for many people. No word yet on availability or price, but I imagine the LMP Keypad will be available soon as it has already gone through the FCC.

I have used the Apple Wireless Keyboard for quite some time now and have never had a need for the numerical keypad -- but maybe that's because I am bad with numbers. My brother the accountant, though? He could definitely use one of these.

  • DISH Network updates Remote Access TV app to work with iPad

Dish Remote Access AppThere's a new version of Dish Network's Remote Access app, and for iPad users running iOS 4 or higher it's got a killer feature. Subscribers will now not only have the ability to manage their DVR and schedule recordings away from home, but to also watch live TV on their iPad.

While the Remote Access app itself is free and available from the App Store, streaming live video and DVR content (branded as "TV Everywhere" by Dish) requires a ViP 922 Slingloaded DVR or the purchase of a Sling Adapter for US $99.99 to worth with a ViP 722 or ViP 722k HD DuoDVR. Using a single USB connection to your internet-connected DVR, the Sling Adapter allows users to watch live satellite TV via a web browser, the Sling client or the Remote Access app.

You can also watch via your Mac (on watch.slingbox.com or dishonline.com), although the processor requirements (2.8GHz Core 2 Duo or better) are pretty steep, and the browser plugin requires Snow Leopard users to run Safari in 32-bit mode. While Electronista says that the app should also work on a fast 3G link, I highly doubt you will be receiving any hi-def video via that connection. Dish offers a connection tester tool that will let you prequalify your speed and your computer for streaming video.

We have talked about the SlingPlayer for iPad app before, but for those Dish Network customers out there this should definitely free up your ability to watch satellite TV from somewhere other than your couch.

  • TrueHDR for iPhone updates and improves photo quality

HDR (high dynamic range) photos are getting a lot of buzz now, especially since Apple built HDR capabilities into the iPhone 4. While the official Apple implementation is pretty good, I still suggest photographers take a look at third party offerings which have more options, and in my opinion, some of which do a better job.

TrueHDR today updated its US $1.99 app, and added a "Natural" mode, which makes the colors more realistic and reduces noise. The developers claim the natural mode uses new image processing techniques that have been written using all new programming. Note: TrueHDR is on sale for $0.99 through December 4th.

The app allows you to take an image in fully automatic mode, semi-automatic and manual. I used all the modes, but preferred manual to select my light and dark points. Read on to see why.

  • TUAW TV Live: AirPrint, AirPlay, RapidWeaver, and more

It's nearly 5 PM ET, which means it's time for TUAW TV Live. This is the weekly livestreaming video show where me and a group of Apple geeks get together to chat about the latest news from Cupertino and beyond.

Today's show is all about what iOS 4.2 brought to the picture. I'll do some live demos of some of the features in action, and will have recorded video for other features that need an Apple TV to show off. I'll also be demoing RapidWeaver 5.0, which was released today. You can even enter to win a free license for RapidWeaver, valued at US$79.

How can you join in on the fun? From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the read more link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application.

We haven't neglected our iPad users, since you can tune in to TUAW TV Live on your iPad! That link will send you to a non-Flash page, although you won't have access to our chat tool. And one final note -- if the show has started and you're seeing a previously recorded show instead of the livestream, you can always pop on over to ustream.tv/tuaw to join the show in progress.

  • OpenFeint announces in-app content service, infrastructure to support freemium games
Social gaming network OpenFeint has finally unveiled its OpenFeint X service, which will allow developers on the App Store (and a few other mobile platforms) to add cloud-based microtransaction content to their games on top of Apple's own in-app purchase service. This is apparently a system that lives outside of Apple's own store, and allows developers to quickly and easily add in-app content without having to go through Apple's approval system. If that sounds confusing, it's because the system is still so new -- only a few developers have worked with it so far (though we're supposed to see it running in popular titles like Fruit Ninja soon), and the updates for providing virtual currency and goods aren't out yet. But this is the next step for OpenFeint -- after Apple released Game Center, OpenFeint's plan was to provide even more services on top of the Game Center functionality, and with the rise of freemium apps on the store lately, delivering this content is an important thing for developers to do.

To kick off the new service, OpenFeint is holding what its calling a "million dollar challenge" -- the first 100 developers to sign up and use OpenFeint X will be able to earn up to $10,000 without sharing any revenue (which basically means OpenFeint is giving away $1 million of the money it would have made). After that, developers who use the service will enter a revenue sharing plan -- if you're a developer, you can find more details about that on the official website.

This won't change things for most end users -- it likely won't matter to you whether you click one of Apple's buttons to make an in-app purchase or use code from another company. But it will be an interesting choice for developers to make. And given what we've heard about the growing revenues from in-app purchases, a service like this is showing up at exactly the right time.

  • Pocket Frogs hits 3 million downloads, 350k daily active users
NimbleBit developer Ian Marsh tweeted a link to a promotional infographic about popular app Pocket Frogs yesterday, and the title has apparently reached a whopping three million downloads in just ten weeks on the App Store. Daily active users have peaked at 350,000, which is a pretty sizable number for an app of this scale (you can also see on the graphic that it's been developed by a team of 2, and less than $500 has been spent on marketing the app).

There's also some information in the graphic about the in-app purchases on the freemium app. According to NimbleBit, over 12 million potions and over 4 million in-game stamps have been sold to players. Prices on those actually vary depending on how many you buy at a time -- you can buy 10 for 99 cents, or 1000 for $29.99. But we've already heard that most of the purchases are of the 99 cent variety, so when you put the average closer to that, I calculate the app has made well over a million dollars. That's before Apple's cut, of course.

How'd they do it? The graphic also points out that the average time inbetween game updates has been only around 11 days. Since release, NimbleBit has added some very significant features to the game, including a new mode to race frogs, new goals to hit while breeding them, and a social feature to share which frogs you're working on. Turns out the freemium model, combined with constant attention and improvement from a core team of devs, translates into player interest -- and profits.

  • BBC to launch subscription iPad player in the US
The BBC's iPlayer was made Mac compatible in 2008. Now, The Financial Times (FT) is reporting (subscription required) that the network intends to make the on-demand service available to iPads, using a subscription model.

Don't hold your breath while you wait, however. BBC Worldwide said that this isn't going to happen until "the middle of next year," and even then only in "certain target markets." Additionally, no word on pricing was available, though there will be ad-supported free sections as well as paid content.

The iPlayer, which lets users stream BBC programs for a limited time after their original air date, has been extremely popular in the UK. It was pushing out 100 million downloads per month at the beginning of 2010. One can only hope it won't be limited to BBC America content when launched in the States.

Personally, I find myself watching more and more TV and movies with my iPad via Netflix and Hulu Plus. I'm not ready to cut the cable yet, but the idea is getting more attractive all the time.

  • Apple's Ping among Business Insider's tech flops of 2010
Business Insider lists Ping among the 15 biggest flops in tech for 2010. The reason for this listing is that Ping was launched with a great deal of publicity, but it still hasn't gained much of a foothold in the hearts and minds of its users. Business Insider cites the reminder mail about Ping, sent earlier this month, as evidence that Ping has failed.

I'm not sure there's anyone jumping up and down about what a crazy, unbelievable success Ping has been, but the service has only been around since September. I don't think three months is enough time to count Apple out of the social network game, especially when we know they're still working to smooth things out with Facebook. While Ping hasn't set the world on fire in 2010, here's hoping it gets some traction and real motion in 2011.

  • iPhone, Android "most desired" smartphones for upgraders in the U.S.

Here's a little analyst-based hint for those of you not sure what to get your smartphone-obsessed loved one this holiday season.

According to a survey released by Nielsen, 29.7 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers now have smartphones (with Apple, RIM and Android taking the lion's share). Android's market share certainly has been growing, though, with RIM apparently loosing out the most.

However, out of all the regular mobile phone users who are planning to upgrade to a smartphone, when asked what platform they are most likely to upgrade to in the next year, both Apple's iPhone and Android were on a near par for the "most desired" smartphone operating system with Apple just pipping Android to the post.

Apparently, for those planning to upgrade to a smart phone in the next year, it seems women tend to prefer the iPhone more while men, and those in the 35 - 54 age bracket, have a slightly greater tendency towards the Android variety.

Nielsen summarizes its findings into the following four points:

    • Among users planning to get a new smartphone, current smartphone owners showed a preference for the Apple iPhone (35 percent), while 28 percent of both smartphone and featurephone planned smartphone upgraders indicated they wanted a device with an Android operating system as their next mobile phone.
    • Featurephone owners planning to get a smartphone are less likely to have made up their mind about the OS they will choose: 25 percent were "not sure" what their next desired OS might be compared to 13 percent of smartphone owners. Those over 55 were markedly less certain than younger mobile users, with 27.8 saying they weren't sure what kind of device they wanted next, compared to 12.2 percent of those 18 to 24.
    • Apple's iPhone and devices with the Android operating system were the "most desired" among likely smartphone upgraders, with Apple showing a slight lead among those age 55+ , 18 to 24, and 25 to 34.
    • Women planning to get a smartphone are more likely to want an iPhone as their next device, with slightly more males preferring Android.

So, with all that information, you should have no problem choosing how to best please your loved one with the right smartphone gift this year. Naturally, here at TUAW, we'd suggest the slightly more fruity variety, but hey, the stats are in front of you.

  • TUAW TV Live: The post-iOS 4.2 show

A few weeks ago, in anticipation of iOS 4.2 making its way to our iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads, I hosted an hour-long episode of TUAW TV Live in which we journeyed together through some of the upcoming features of the OS upgrade.

On today's show, we'll see how well some of the new features work in reality. I'll show you how AirPrint works from iPad and iPhone using Ecamm's Printopia software on the Mac, play with AirPlay, and discuss the pros and cons of iOS 4.2.

With RapidWeaver 5.0 now available and a giveaway of ten licenses for the popular web design tool going on right now here on TUAW, I'll also be demonstrating the new version of the application and highlighting some of the features of RapidWeaver 5.0. With Apple seemingly ignoring iWeb during the release of iLife '11, RapidWeaver is looking like a contender for the title of best easy-to-use web design tool.

Join us at 5 PM ET today here at TUAW. Just drop by a few minutes before the start of the show for instructions on how to view the livestream and participate in the chat. Remember that all TUAW TV Live shows are archived for your viewing pleasure on Ustream.

  • US Marines experimenting with iPads for recruitment

OK, maggots! If you'd like to sign up to be a member of The U.S. Marine Corps, you're going to need to learn to use an iPad. Or at least sign your name on one.

Military Times is reporting that the Corps is experimenting with the use of iPads in recruiting. The blog reported that the commander of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command, Maj. Gen. Robert Milstead, noted in a recent interview that the Corps is doing well in recruitment, but that it faces challenges like a shrinking advertising budget. That's where the iPads come in.

Recruiters set up booths at county fairs, athletic events and the like, creating contests for able-bodied young people such as performing pull-ups. In order to participate, the students need to sign a waiver. In the past, waiver forms were filled out by hand and then re-entered into a database for future contact. The re-entry took time and effort, and often the handwritten information was illegible.

Using the iPad, the recruiters can capture the information immediately with fewer errors. The Corps isn't sure that they're going to continue the program beyond the experimental stage, but they recognize the potential of Apple's top-selling tablet. Oohrah!

  • JPMorgan iPad distribution confirmed, says Bloomberg

According to an email obtained by Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase & Co will be handing out free iPads to all associates in its global investment banking division (that's investment bankers for you and me).

In a pilot program to last until May 2011, the bankers will trial the device to see how well it fares as an additional mobile tool as well as being allowed to take advantage of the device for personal use.

"We believe there are real benefits in our working environment that can be realized using this device - as well as the personal productivity and enjoyment that come as part of the package," said two New York-based JPMorgan managing directors in the email.

The news comes as the BlackBerry trend at Wall Street seems to be shifting more and more towards the iPhone and the iPad. It's no secret the Apple is pushing hard to expand from its well-established consumer market into the corporate world.

Bloomberg reports that banks including Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group AG have recently revealed apps built for the iPad, and that Citi Group and Bank of America are considering the iPhone as an option for their employees.

According to Brian Marshal, an analyst at Gleacher & Co, "Apple represents a clear and present danger for RIM going forward. For the first time you have a viable alternative to secure mobile communications and by and large we see people moving away from the BlackBerry platform in droves in favor of the iPhone and the iPad."

BlackBerry's PlayBook, which is being touted as a real competitor to the iPad, is due out next year. RIM has got some serious catching up to do considering Apple's head start into the tablet-computing world. However, the question is, though the PlayBook seems to fare better against the first generation iPad, will it be able to compete as well with the iPad 2 (rumored for release early next year)? And whether Wall Street's BlackBerry faithful can hold out until next year for the the PlayBook's release?

  • Flock 3.5 browser for Mac moves to speedy Chromium 7 engine

Flock, the free combo web browser / social networking tool / dessert topping, has been updated on all platforms to version 3.5, but the newest version for Mac OS X has really received a boost.

In the past, Flock for Mac OS X was based on Gecko, the web browser layout engine from Mozilla that powers the Firefox browser. Unfortunately for Mac users, Flock was a bit on the slow side.

Flock 3.5 for Mac OS X has replaced the Gecko engine with the shiny, speedy new Chromium 7 engine, which is based on WebKit. I downloaded the new Mac OS X edition yesterday and it feels much faster than the previous version, although I have no benchmarks to validate that claim.

Flock is unique among web browsers in that it has a scrolling sidebar that contains a constantly-changing flow of updates from your social networks, including Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, and RSS feeds. To log into all of the social networks and services, Flock requires a free account. Once you have logged into the Flock account, all of the updates start to scroll down the sidebar. It's a great way to keep up with your social networks while browsing or blogging.

  • Renault to launch first European iAd for new Twizy EV
When Apple's mobile iAds launch in Europe this week, one of the companies with a campaign will be French automaker Renault. It's fitting that Renault will be promoting its new two-seat electric city car, the Twizy, with its iAd since its alliance partner Nissan was the first to use iAds earlier this year to plug the Leaf EV.

Electric vehicles are certainly in the early adopter stage right now, and iPhone and iPad users are generally seen as more willing to try something new. Many of the coming wave of electric vehicles will also be relying on smartphone apps to help drivers find available charging stations and monitor the charging status of their cars.

The new iAd will include content to try and counter some of the perceived myths about electric vehicles, including a calculator that allows users to determine how much they can charge their car while doing various tasks like grocery shopping. Check out a video preview of the iAd in the second part of the story.

  • 360 Panorama brings sharing, simplicity to iPhone pano photos

We first looked at 360 Panorama back in July when it debuted against other panoramic photo apps, including Boinx's You Gotta See This and Debacle Software's Pano. On sale now for just US$0.99 (regular price $2.99), Occipital's panorama application has been updated to add what developer Jeff Powers calls "streetview sharing." This new sharing feature (a "hosted immersive viewing experience") allows you to upload your panoramas and access them from any web browser, whether that browser supports Flash or not.

When viewed, you can flick and drag to see the panorama from any angle. Follow through the "read more" link to view a sample embedded panorama that I created at a local cemetery, which showcases the hosted interaction. You can easily share your panoramic creations with family, friends, colleagues and clients. All they need is a browser.

  • RapidWeaver 5.0: TUAW exclusive first look and promo code giveaway

RapidWeaver, the easy-to-use and incredibly powerful website creation tool from Realmac Software, has just been updated to version 5.0. I had a sneak peek at the Mac OS X app earlier this week, and I'd like to share the experience with you.

From what I've seen in a few days of working with the application, a lot of RapidWeaver has undergone a complete rewrite. For example, the resource system that manages website resources like PDFs, images and ZIP archives was previously available only for individual pages. Now, they're available in a sidebar alongside of pages for easy access. It's a simple drag and drop operation to add resources, whether they're images, movies or sound files. There's a QuickLook button for seeing those resources close up as well.

RapidWeaver 5 has new sitemap plug-ins that generate HTML sitemaps for projects, as well as an XML sitemap that details every page in a project. The XML sitemap is submitted to the appropriate search engines when a site is published.

Realmac has added six new themes to the built-in theme library, bringing the total number of included themes up to 47. Of course, there are many more themes available from third-party developers. Realmac has also consolidated themes that are applied to a RapidWeaver project, and those themes can optionally be compressed for faster loading of sites.

  • Mozilla evangelist asks Apple, Google and Microsoft to stop installing unwanted plug-ins
Asa Dotzler has been promoting Mozilla Firefox for more than six years, and he's not happy about other software vendors installing unwanted plug-ins in his browser. Among the vendors getting under Dotzler's skin are Apple, Google and Microsoft, each of whom also happen to produce a competing web browser.

Apple, Google and Microsoft are by no means the only companies that install plug-ins to Firefox, but most companies at least ask the user before doing so. Dotzler is concerned about plug-ins like the iTunes Application Detector or Google Update being installed silently in the background without even a prompt. In Dotzler's view, this behavior is akin to installing a Trojan horse. Although the Firefox evangelist is not accusing Apple and the others of installing anything malicious, just the act of pushing unknown software is troubling.

Since plug-ins and extensions are typically the leading cause of browser instability and crashes, even seemingly benign additions can cause user frustration. While silent plug-ins are doubtlessly annoying, the fact that it can happen is troubling. Instead of accusing other software companies of being evil, perhaps the Firefox developers need to change the code to prevent this from happening in the first place. If Apple or Google can install a plug-in without asking, what's to prevent a hacker from doing the same and grabbing your private data? Do Safari or Chrome allow silent plug-in installations? If not, then perhaps it's time to move on from Firefox.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Heroes Lore
Back when EA premiered its list of upcoming App Store titles, one stood out for me: Heroes Lore III is now out on the App Store for US$1.99. This one's interesting -- it's a Korean RPG that's been translated over to the iPhone. If you've ever played any of the old 16-bit Super Nintendo RPGs like Secret of Mana, you'll know how this one works. You can level up and fight enemies in real time while using various abilities and gearing your way up through a sizable story. There are five classes to play with, and two different factions to fight for, as well as the ability to battle other players along the way.

Early reviews say the controls are a little wonky, so you might end up wrestling with the iPhone's touchscreen a bit. Some of the classes are a little unbalanced, too. Not all of them work as well as others, so you'll probably find a few favorites and stick with those. Still, it's very interesting to see EA bring a game like this to the App Store. If you're a fan of those old RPGs on the 16-bit systems, you'll probably enjoy this one. It's available for just a few bucks right now.
