Переслать - Planning on buying a MacBook Pro? Wait until later this week
Consider this a public service announcement: if you're in the market for a MacBook Pro, right now is about the worst possible time to buy one. Wait at least until this coming Thursday, February 24. Multiple indicators point to the MacBook Pro line being refreshed on that date.
We heard in December that the MacBook Pro line will be upgraded in the first half of 2011, and the current lineup started seeing supply shortages in late January. Over the past couple weeks, we've heard from multiple sources that the MacBook Pro will be upgraded in March, possibly as early as March 1 -- later reports have bumped that date up to later this week. After an initial production hiccup, Intel has shipped its next-gen "Sandy Bridge" processor, all but certain to debut in the forthcoming MacBook Pro update. Multiple reports from various sources point to supply shortages of the current MacBook Pro and new model numbers showing up in inventory databases.
Now, AppleInsider reports that third-party dealers have been told to expect sealed shipments from Apple, expected to arrive as early as tomorrow. All of this points to imminent upgrades to the MacBook Pro -- possibly significant upgrades, as the new Intel processors are supposed to be much more powerful than the current lineup. Additionally, it's possible the new MacBook Pros may include a new "high-speed connection technology" based on Intel's Light Peak, with data transfer speeds far exceeding those of USB or Firewire.
Even if you're not interested in these new bells and whistles and believe the current MacBook Pro would suit your needs, it's still worth waiting until the new models debut later this week, because the current lineup will almost certainly be heavily discounted. Watch this space or this one if you want to pick up one of the current models on the cheap after the new models launch. Take our word on this, if you buy a MacBook Pro before Thursday, you're going to want to kick yourself later.
Update: If you've seen this post too late and have already taken the plunge on a new MacBook Pro at this worst of all buying times, there's still hope. You can return the product within 14 days of your purchase for a full refund, and Apple no longer assesses restocking fees if you do so. If you're far outside of that 14-day grace period, you're pretty much out of luck; if you're only a day or two beyond it, you might be able to get a manager at your local Apple Store to work something out with you as long as you're nice about it.

Переслать - Adobe Ideas for iPad gets feature boost
Adobe updated Ideas, its vector-based sketchbook application for the iPad, earlier this week. The 1.2 version of the iPad application is available for free and lets users grab a capacitive stylus or their finger to create a drawing or add annotations to images. This latest version adds a new premium layer functionality that lets you add up to 10 drawing layers and one photo layer for each sketch. You can also change the layer order and opacity as well as rotate, move and scale each layer using this new tool which is available as an in-app purchase.
Originally introduced in April 2010, the Ideas application lets you zoom and pan as you create so you can focus on select areas of your sketch. As a bonus, you can output your creations to an external VGA display using the Apple VGA adapter. Other new features include the ability to move the toolbar from the left to the right side of the drawing canvas and improved stroke smoothing. Переслать - Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI solutions make your HDTV a big monitor
If you have a Mac that was introduced from mid-2010 on and it has a Mini DisplayPort, Kanex has a couple of solutions that can turn your HDTV or other HDMI-equipped video device into a monitor with full audio pass-through.
I recently had a chance to test out two such solutions from Kanex. The first is the US$29.95 Kanex iAdapt V2, which is an adapter that plugs into the Mini DisplayPort and has an HDMI port on the other end. It's useful if you already have an HDMI cable and just want to be able to plug it into your compatible Mac. The second is the $44.95 Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable, which combines the adapter with a 10-foot long HDMI cable. You plug one end into your Mac, the other into your HDTV.
For compatible devices, which include the MacBook (Late 2010 release), MacBook Pro 13 /15 /17 inch (Mid 2010 release), iMac 21.5/27 inch (Early 2010 release), MacBook Air 11 /13 inch (Mid 2010 release), and Mac Mini and Mac Pro (Mid 2010 release), you not only get a selection of HD video formats (720p / 1080i / 1080p), but also 5.1 surround sound pass-through. This could be extremely useful for business travelers who want to look at presentations or videos on a screen that's bigger than the one on the 11.6" MacBook Air -- they can turn to the large flat-panel HDTVs that are now in many hotel rooms.

Переслать - Apple about to add Light Peak to Macs?
According to CNET sources, Apple is set to introduce a new "high-speed connection technology" very soon. The most obvious new connection type this could be is Light Peak, a sort of jack-of-all-trades connection technology. Light Peak allows one interface to be used to connect pretty much any device you can plug into a computer, including displays, scanners, printers, external hard drives, and even devices such as iPods and iPhones.
The obvious hardware to introduce the Light Peak connection interface (if that's what it is) on would be next week's rumored MacBook Pros; however, CNET's sources did not confirm that the new notebooks would be the first to sport the new interface. Additionally, CNET's sources claim Apple will not use the name "Light Peak" for the new technology, but instead brand it under a different name.
Light Peak was first previewed by by Intel in 2009 and is based on fiber optic technology, but instead of using light-based technology, it would use copper lines. Many have suspected Light Peak is the reason Apple has not updated its Macs with USB 3.0 -- Light Peak technology offers significantly faster data connections which top out at 10 gigabits per second in each direction. Intel originally said the first Light Peak-based products would ship in the first half of 2011.Apple about to add Light Peak to Macs? originally appeared on TUAW on Sat, 19 Feb 2011 23:30:00 EST. Переслать - Apple patent shows new "smart bezel" for tablets
An Apple patent was published this week that details a touch sensitive, smart bezel for its tablet devices. The bezel would include touch sensors, pressure sensors, light emitters, haptic actuators and accelerometers. With this array of embedded sensors, a user could touch the bezel and control volume, adjust brightness and more.
This patent also describes the use of the bezel to wake up a device, unlock a device and toggle a device on and off. Such a design could allow for the development of a home button-less iPad, a device that was rumored earlier this year by BGR. The smart bezel is similar to, but more advanced than the touch-sensitive gesture area of the Palm Pre Plus and the Pre 2. This type of smart housing may also make its way into Apple's notebook line where embedded sensors would be used to detect I/O activity.
This is not the first patent to introduce the use of an intelligent bezel in a tablet device. Earlier this month, Apple was awarded a patent for a bezel that controls volume, adjusts brightness, lets a user zoom, and even functions as a game controller. An earlier patent describes touch-sensitive areas that could replace buttons on a device such as the iPad. Together these patents suggest Apple is looking at alternative input mechanisms that could drive the next wave of innovation in the tablet market.
