  • GreenPois0n jailbreak goes untethered

The Chronic Dev team of eager iOS hackers at GreenPois0n has announced an untethered jailbreak for the current Apple TV in the form of RC6 of the eponymous utility. This new build features contributions from the NitoTV team to enable the tetherless feature.

Up until RC6, most iOS 4.2 jailbreak tools performed a tethered jailbreak, meaning you would have to connect your device to your Mac or PC on reboot to get it to start up properly. While this wasn't a huge issue with the ATV (you could simply set it not to sleep), it could be a pain in the neck with iPhones and iPod touches if they lost all charge and needed to be restarted.

I successfully used Seas0nPass to jailbreak my ATV last week, but I may restore it back to normal to give GreenPois0n a try.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Apple is Barron's most-respected company for second year running

In what should be no surprise to anyone who follows the tech sector, Apple has been named Barron's most-respected company for the second year running. Barron's annual most-respected list is compiled from a survey of money managers who can recommend any company in the world for the top honors.

Not only did Apple make those money managers a huge amount of cash last year (the stock went up almost 60% in 2010) but Apple also took top honors because the company had the technical, creative, and marketing skills to finally shape a viable consumer market with iPad for a technology that's existed in some form since before the turn of the century (tablets).

Besides the iPad and the soaring stock price, in 2010 Apple introduced the iPhone 4, redesigned the iPod nano and MacBook Air, hit the 10 billionth iTunes song download early in the year, and introduced a new Apple TV. And that was just the big stuff. Check out the cool video after the break that showcases some of the other reasons Apple was probably chosen as Barron's most-respected company in 2010. Matter of fact, Apple had such a high-flying year, we could almost forgive Ping.

  • My top 3 iPhone apps: Angry Mac Bastards [NSFW]

If you've never heard the Angry Mac Bastards podcast you may not be aware (although you may have guessed from the title of their show) that there is some "salty" language, if you will.

Who are we kidding? Profanity permeates their show. The swearing is resplendent in this week's installment of "3 apps" -- so brace yourself, this video is well beyond PG-13.

Still, the AMB crew of Peter Cohen and John C. Welch (partner Darby Lines was not around) are quite hilarious in this extended remix edition of "My top 3 apps." Yes, technically we asked them their "favorite" 3 apps this time.

The rant on cheap, $.99 apps is worth the wait as they note "premium apps" have a place on the store and on your iPhone. If you are easily offended, next week we'll have a kinder, gentler edition of My top 3 iPhone apps. Until then, swear-laden video is on the next page plus a list of the apps mentioned with handy iTunes links.

We've come in for our share of abuse from the AMB from time to time on their show, but we hope this video shows those Bastards that there are no hard feelings. Well, relatively few hard feelings.

  • Mac App Store highlights "apps for the creative home"

Apple has set up its first highlighted section for the Mac App Store, in which it displays "apps for the creative home." There are five apps featured in each of four categories (covering things from design to music and photography), and there are some good picks in there, from Apple's own apps to TUAW favorites like Pixelmator, djay, and a few others.

To be honest, while apps getting featured tends to be good for developers and customers, the display section looks a little sparse. With only five apps per category, that leaves three spaces open on each, and it certainly looks (though of course this is just an assumption) like Apple had trouble finding enough quality apps to fill the space. Not to mention that we're seeing repeats already -- many of these apps have already been featured.

For whatever reason (app prices, difficulty in development, customer usage habits), I'd suggest that the Mac App Store isn't taking off quite as meteorically as the iOS store did for both the iPhone and the iPad. Obviously things are growing over there, and we've seen some very impressive numbers already. But it looks like the curve will be a little less steep for the Mac App Store.

  • Bejeweled 3 (probably) coming to iOS

Here's some good (if obvious) news to kick off your weekend right. PopCap Games' Garth Chouteau says in a recent interview that yes, in case you were wondering, they will probably bring Bejeweled 3 to iOS. The latest version of the original gem-matching masterpiece was released on PC a while back, but many players held off in order to buy it on iPhone and iPad. Chouteau says that while "we're traditionally somewhat slow to adapt our games to other platforms after launching them on PC/Mac... Bejeweled 3 for iPhone/iPad is probably something we'll do...eventually...!"

I can't say I blame PopCap for taking its time -- of course they want to sell copies of the desktop app, and with a game as simple as Bejeweled, I'd imagine most people would rather play it in a mobile form. But even though they go slow, PopCap eventually hits as many platforms as possible, so we'll see Bejeweled 3 on iOS at some point.

The company is organizing a meetup at the Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco later this month so perhaps "eventually" will be sooner than we think. I'll be there in person, and if there are any new iOS games to speak of you'll be the first to know.

  • iPad apps produce unique fingerprint patterns

You may have seen click heatmaps before -- they're a visual representation of where user mice have clicked on a web page. The iPad, as this post from Design Language News shows, has its own built-in heatmap: the oils and residue left on the iPad's screen after you use a certain app. It's kind of gross, sure (usually, people are more concerned about wiping this stuff off than learning anything from it), but as you can see from the pictures, the fingerprints can provide some interesting insight into apps and how they're used.

You can see, for example, why the iOS UI puts rarely-used or navigation buttons on the top of the screen. Since most of our usage is right around the middle, developers want to make sure that buttons that require any traveling also have a suitable importance of function and thus are prominently displayed. And you can see the simplicity of certain apps, too, as Angry Birds and the YouTube app only have a few controls, while a game like Fieldrunners can get relatively complex.

Interesting stuff, all divined from smudges we wipe off daily. I don't think Apple provides heatmaps like these to developers, but maybe some coders trying to figure out how their UI is used can check the fingerprints after a usage session and see what they learn.

  • Microsoft and Nokia team up to fight Apple and Android

Nokia has thrown in with Windows Phone 7 to try and have some impact in the smartphone universe. Steven Elop, a former Microsoft executive and now CEO of Nokia, made the announcement today in London.

Reactions are mixed, of course, but Nokia stock has taken a beating, and about 1,000 Nokia employees have reportedly walked out in protest. Nokia has long been a leader in cell phones around the world, but has had vanishingly small sales in the US. This partnership is generally believed to be mainly a benefit for the Windows 7 Phone OS, since sales of devices using it have been disappointing.

Nokia had looked at the Google Android OS as a possibility, but ultimately threw in the boys from Redmond. A Google exec has tweeted that "Two Turkeys do not make an Eagle," a reference to Nokia and Microsoft. Elop tweeted back "Two bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, one day decided to fly." It would be interesting to know what the folks at Apple think about all this reshuffling of the competition. Historically, these kinds of partnerships often come to nothing. We'll all be watching, but competition is good if it makes all our phones better. What do you think? Will Nokia-Microsoft be a powerful iPhone competitor? Or just two turkeys?

Update: A funny footnote -- Nokia released a little video about the announcement, and if you use iMovie often, you might recognize the music. That's right: to celebrate their deal with Microsoft, Nokia used an Apple app. We wish the new couple well -- they'll probably need it.

  • Opera Mini for iPad set for debut

According to a report from Macworld, the iPad is about to get its own version of the popular Opera Mini web browser. The new iPad-centric version will supposedly be released at the Mobile World Congress event starting in Barcelona next week, along with updated versions for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry mobile platforms. Speaking with Macworld, Opera CEO Lars Boilesen said that "Our developers have been hard at work building the mobile browser of the future for both consumers and mobile operators."

Back in 2008 it was reported that Apple wouldn't allow Opera to place their mobile browser in the App Store to compete with Safari, but in April of 2010 it was finally approved for use on the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad and is currently available as a free download from the App Store. Of course, it has to use Webkit for the browsing engine, but it maintains Opera's backend for server-side compression, yielding faster page loads on slower connections. And for those of you still looking for a new browser to try out on your Mac, you may want to check out Opera 11 for Mac, which was released back in December.

  • Get five free songs on iTunes with your American Express card

If you have an American Express card, the company wants to give you five songs on iTunes for free. Just hit up this URL and enter your card information (we double-checked -- it's an official deal, not a scam), and then whenever you buy five songs on iTunes with the same card, you'll get refunded the price. Nice bonus for the weekend, if you happen to be an AmEx card holder. It's also an interesting way to get you to use your AmEx for iTunes purchases.

If you've been meaning to pick up the Beatles ever since their music finally appeared on the store, now's your chance. Enjoy!

  • AT&T iPhone customers: go grab your free 1000 minutes

at&t free minutesLoyal AT&T iPhone customer? AT&T wants to say thank you to iPhone owners by sending you 1000 free rollover minutes. All you have to do is text.

We first heard about this free 1000 minutes deal earlier today but declined to post because we weren't sure that AT&T really was offering it to all customers. We sent an e-mail to AT&T PR and never heard back, but since 9to5Mac claims that AT&T has confirmed this is legitimate for all customers, here's the details of how to claim your minutes.

Hop in to your SMS app, and send off the message YES to 11113020 by March 31, 2011. Your account will be credited with 1000 bonus rollover minutes -- although it can take up to four weeks to process the offer. Enjoy!

Update: We contacted AT&T via Seth Bloom (blogger relations) to ensure this was legit and he said, "It's a valid text that some customers are getting. We've done it before, thanking customers."

  • Apple to redesign iOS notification system

Cult of Mac is reporting that Apple is planning a revamp to its iOS notification system. iOS's current notification system, which is used for everything from text messages to push notifications, has remained virtually unchanged since the introduction of the original iPhone in 2007. The current notification system uses a series of pop-up bezels which are sometimes cramped with information or, worse, fails to display adequate information in an easy to view manner. A good example of this is when you receive two text messages: you are only notified that you have two texts, and can't see the content of the text message without entering the Messages app.

If Apple is indeed overhauling their notification system, they may not be doing it entirely using in-house resources. Sources are reporting that Apple may be, or already has, purchased a small iOS development company that offers their own type of notification system through the App Store. While the company has not been specifically identified, Cult of Mac suggests it could be Appremix, which makes a very popular free app called Boxcar that allows users to receive push notifications from a variety of sources including Facebook, Twitter, and Google Voice. You can read our review of Boxcar here.

While iOS is largely considered the best mobile OS available, its notification system has been a point of criticism for a while. When the Palm Pre debuted with webOS, one of the strong points of its operating system was its banner notifications, which were designed by ex-Apple employee Rich Dellinger. Dellinger has since returned to Apple and may very well be leading the charge in revamping iOS's notification system.

  • Sony hints at pulling music from iTunes

Sony introduced Music Unlimited in Europe last year and is slated to kick off the streaming music service in Australia soon. The subscription service has a library of 6 million tracks that can be streamed wirelessly to Sony TVs, Blu-ray players and the PlayStation 3 with support for portable devices and mobile phones in the future. Before this Australian launch, Michael Ephraim, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, sat down with The Age, a Melbourne-based newspaper.

During the course of the conversation, Ephraim confirmed that Sony needs to be in iTunes as that is the popular format right now. If Music Unlimited takes off as a streaming music service, Sony could withdraw from iTunes and invest themselves entirely in their own delivery system. ''Publishers are being held to ransom by Apple and they are looking for other delivery systems," says Ephraim, "Sony is waiting to see what the next three to five years will hold.''

These comments come fresh on the heels of a growing battle between Sony and Apple over the rejection of the Sony Reader application for the iPhone. The app was reportedly rejected from the App Store because it did not include a mechanism for purchasing ebooks within the application. Apple is rumored to be considering changes to its terms of service that would require publishers to sell their digital content within each publisher's iOS application.
