- Halftone iPhone app gives your photos that old-time newspaper look
Halftone (currently US$0.99), a new iOS photo app from Juicy Bits Software, wants to be the app that turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a photographic time machine. Juicy Bits is the company that created the cool 3D Camera Studio for iPad ($3.99) and 3D Camera ($1.99) apps that provide a way to create 3D anaglyph, stereogram, and "wigglegram" images.
A Short History of Halftones
Back in the ancient, pre-digital days, there used to be a way of consuming news, entertainment, and sports content called "reading the newspaper." Whenever there was a major news event -- the Kennedy assassination, the Apollo moon landings, and so forth -- many people would grab the newspapers to stash them away for posterity.
Looking at old newspapers now, it's amazing how crude the photos look. The halftones used to print pictures, coupled with the sepia tone that the papers have taken on through aging, have a distinctive look that is associated with an era that began to disappear in the late 1970s and early 80's when digital imagesetters made their entrance. Click "Read More" to read the review of Halftone.

Переслать - Southwest Airlines now selling iTunes content
Last week saw low-cost airline Jetstar offering in-flight iPads to customers, and now 9to5 Mac is reporting on a Variety magazine story which says that Southwest Airlines is about to start selling media content through Apple's iTunes Store. Called InAirtainment, the program offers fliers a playlist of 20 free songs from new artists to entice customers to shop the iTunes store, and Southwest will be receiving a small percentage of sales like any typical iTunes affiliate.
Speaking with Variety, Southwest spokesperson Whitney Eichinger said that "we want our customers to be able to find all their travel needs at Southwest.com and a big part of traveling is loading up on songs, movies, and all the television you've missed during the week." That should be a big selling point for passengers of the airline, which doesn't provide seat-back entertainment in their fleet of Boeing 737 jets.
We have seen a lot of cross-promotion of late between different airlines and Apple media devices, including the approval of the use of iPads in the cockpit for flight planning and iPad check-ins in Malaysia. Seems Apple's products aren't just showing up in TV and film; they are also taking over the in-flight entertainment world.

Переслать - Apple patent suggests Photo Booth for iOS
Patently Apple uncovered a new patent that describes an iOS variant of the Photo Booth app that may be under development for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The patent describes an image capture and effects system that can be triggered by external cues such as shaking your phone.
A new setting for "Image Effects" is presented under the Wallpaper option that lets you turn on special effects for select camera applications. In addition to toggles for iPod video, the camera and the photo app, there are control options for audio, motion, location and camera data. There are several familiar Photo Booth settings such as X-Ray, Glow, and Thermal Effects in these various sub-menus.
The patent also describes a variety of audio, video, and imaging effects that range from the complex waves and reflections down to the simple brush stroke and rotation. Taken as a whole, the patent seems to describe an image capturing application that automatically applies a variety of effects to your photos similar to the desktop Photo Booth application.
Earlier this year several circulating rumors suggested Photo Booth was coming to iOS. An unknown source of BGR claimed to have knowledge of a Photo Booth application for the iPad as well as an iPad version of the iLife suite. Adding some credibility to this rumor was the discovery of several references to PhotoBooth and PhotoBoothEffects within the codebase of iOS 4.3.

Переслать - Apple TV / film product placement down, but still ahead of competition
Maybe it's because I am both a fan and a loyal customer, but I do tend to notice how often Apple products pop up everywhere as the de facto computers on TV and on the big screen. According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple doesn't even pay for that product placement, yet 30 percent of the top movies in 2010 prominently featured Apple products.
This figure is down from 46 percent in 2009 and 50 percent in 2008, but that 30 percent is still higher than any other brand -- even with other computer brands trying to mimic Apple's placement strategy. Back in 2006 we discussed an article at The Washington Post about all the 'free' product placement Apple received in TV shows and movies, so we know this has been going on for quite some time.
We've recently talked about the iPad being the star of Modern Family and iPod product placement on The Office, and now CrunchGear has found a video of Apple's Greatest Cinematic Achievements over on Vimeo. At 7:24 long and including everything from 30 Rock, War Games, and The Sopranos, it's a fun look at how Apple's products have been placed in film and TV over the years.

Переслать - Apple holds shareholder meeting, Tim Cook presides
Apple held its latest shareholder meeting in Cupertino today, and while Jobs was apparently in attendance (and re-approved as a board member, along with William Campbell, Millard Drexler, Albert Gore, Andrea Jung, Arthur Levinson and Ronald Sugar), Tim Cook was the one overseeing the proceedings. The shareholders also voted to keep Ernst & Young LLC as the accountants of record, and a vote about executive compensation was also approved. One proposal brought up by the shareholders suggested that Apple should publish a detailed succession plan for the CEO position, but that vote didn't pass.
In the just over an hour meeting, shareholders also wished Steve Jobs well in dealing with his health issues (to a round of applause), and they also brought up the recently announced subscription plan, suggesting that if Apple lowered its 30% cut on content purchased through the iTunes store, newspapers would have an easier go of it. The board reportedly didn't have a response for that, but for those developers and content publishers who feel the deal is unfair, it'll be good to know the shareholders are representing those concerns at least.
All in all, it sounds like business as usual in Cupertino. Apple holds one of these every year, and it's rare that major decisions get made or announced during a meeting open to shareholders.

Переслать - TUAW TV Live: The Android flu cancels today's show
Well, whatever it was that knocked TUAW Talkcast Host Kelly Guimont for a loop on Sunday night has apparently crawled through the Interwebs and infected me. After a rough night with a fever, I can barely speak, never mind get through a one-hour show without coughing every few seconds. I'm blaming the Android flu for this -- it's your fault, Google!
As a result, there will be no TUAW TV Live today as I don't want my good friends in the chat room to catch the Android flu. We'll see you next week, when I'm pretty sure the show is going to be all about the new iPads.
In the meantime, be sure to go out to ustream.tv/tuaw and watch some of the golden oldie episodes.

Переслать - The MacBook Air: A professional photographer's best friend
It's good to see that it's not only the geeks here at TUAW who are in love with the MacBook Air. Photographer and blogger Derrick Story at Macworld also has a great fondness for the lightweight Mac, although he's using it for more than just blogging.
Story today published the second of two posts about using the MacBook Air as a professional photographer's tool. The first post answers the question "Is the MacBook Air powerful enough to a professional photographer to use everyday?," while the second focuses on the workflow that Story uses with the MacBook Air.
In the initial post, Story notes that both the 11.6" and 13" models of the diminutive Mac not only fit in a camera backpack easily, but have the power to run iPhoto '11, Aperture 3, Adobe Photoshop CS5, and Adobe Lightroom 3. He had earlier written a post about using the iPad as a professional photographer's tool, but now feels after using the MacBook Air that the added power and storage make it the ultimate addition to the camera bag.
Today's post features the workflow that Story is using. He basically uses the MacBook Air to offload photos to Aperture or Lightroom while in the field, and then "offloads cargo, namely photographs and video, to the mothership."
If you're a professional or skilled amateur photographer, check out the Macworld posts for more information.

Переслать - Apple's North Carolina data center to go live this spring
The cloud is the future and the future appears to be arriving this Spring, as Apple's North Carolina data center is finally due to go live, according to reports from today's Apple annual shareholder meeting. The phrase "in the cloud" refers to data hosted at off-site Internet-accessible facilities rather than stored locally at a specific end-user machine, allowing you to do things like access photos, videos, or music directly over the Internet.
No one outside of Apple knows exactly how the North Carolina center will be used, but rumors abound. Apple Insider writes that the massive facility may support enhanced iTunes and MobileMe services, perhaps providing the long-awaited iTunes cloud-based streaming so many analysts have been hoping for.
Other speculated uses of the North Carolina data center include mobile iWork access, and paid remote Time Machine hosting. Whatever it is, we'll likely find out soon after they start flipping switches in a few months.

Переслать - App Review: Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth leads us to a solid puzzle game
Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth [US$1.99, universal, trial version available] is one of a number of iOS-only games the prolific game designer has created (the others being Monumental -- here's our review -- Roto, Yoku-Gami and Teocalli). It's always been difficult to keep up with the board and card games that the mathematician has come up with, but now that he is working with a number of small iOS developers, it's almost sisyphean. While some Knizia titles are much more worthwhile than others, this is one "brand" I'm usually interested enough to take a look. This counts double considering his new app comes from Tribeflame, developers of the excellent Keltis: Oracle and Through The Desert. Like those other apps, Labyrinth is a puzzle game, but what's it all about?
The impression I get is that If Knizia had designed Carcassonne as a solitaire game, this app is probably what it would have been. Tabletop gamers already know how Knizia's two-player version of Carcassone works (it's the variant called The Castle), but Labyrinth is a calmer affair, and specifically designed for digital play. Keep reading for the details.

Переслать - Survey finds customers confident in Apple without Steve Jobs
If Steve Jobs were to step down as the CEO of Apple, what effect -- if any -- would it have on the likelihood of buying Apple products in the future?
Research firms RBC Capital Markets and ChangeWave asked Apple customers this question in a survey conducted between January 31 and February 9. Of the 3,091 respondents, 84% said Steve Jobs departing Apple would have no impact on their buying decisions and only 7% said they would be less likely to purchase Apple products.
The new results are a notable change from a similar survey completed in June, 2008. In the 2008 survey, 18% of respondents expressed a lower interest in buying from Apple if Steve Jobs left the company.
On January 17, Apple announced Jobs would take his third leave of absence for medical reasons, igniting new concerns among investors and fans about the future of Apple without Jobs at the helm. This past week, Apple shares tumbled about 7% after new worries about the CEO's health began to circulate.
Analyst Mike Abramsky suggests this survey shows that Apple may be bigger than its CEO; that Apple isn't just about Jobs anymore.
"Consumers have had 3 years to evolve their perception of the Apple brand around its creative new products, cutting edge innovation, iTunes/App Store ecosystem and premium quality positioning -- beyond the buying pull of Apple's iconic CEO," Abramsky said.
When Steve Jobs took a medical leave of absence in 2009, customers watched Apple perform successfully with Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook running the company. The company's stock rose 144%, revenue grew by 20%, and Apple shipped 25 million iPhones. This success seems to have boosted customer confidence in Apple.
Does Apple lose its bite without Steve Jobs at the helm and become just another technology company? Will you continue to buy Apple products if he leaves? Переслать - Griffin Survivor is one tough iPhone case
I'm not too rough on my iDevices, but if you are, consider the Griffin Survivor iPhone case. At US $49.99 it costs more that most other cases, but it will likely protect your phone in dire circumstances would compromise others.
Griffin claims the Survivor meets or exceeds U.S. and UK military specs. In fact, it's really 2 cases. An inner plastic case surrounds your phone, hugging it closely. You can open the case with a handy slot that accepts the edge of a coin.
Then you slip the inner case into a rubberized cocoon that adds thickness and protection. There is also a shield that protects the display. Every port is covered, so you should get good immunity to dust and moisture. The home button and volume controls operate with the phone in the case. All the other ports have a rubber flip-up cover. The front facing camera is exposed for using face time, but is behind the glass shield. A removable belt clip that allows you to carry the phone horizontally or vertically.Throwing caution to the wind, I dropped the phone a few times on a hard surface from 6 feet with no ill effects. I wasn't willing to risk anything more aggressive, but I get the point that the case is solid. You can view some torture tests of the case on the Griffin website that are truly impressive.

Переслать - Federal Trade Commission is reviewing Apple's in-app purchase system
The FTC is reviewing Apple's in-app purchasing policy after reports of inadvertent purchases by children have continued to surface. FTC Chairperson Jon Leibowitz agreed to look closely at the matter after Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts brought the matter to his attention.
Leibowitz will most likely focus on Apple's 15-minute window, a single instance sign-in that lets iOS users login once and make additional purchases and downloads for the next 15 minutes. It is during this 15-minute window that children left unattended with a device are able to rack up huge charges.
The latest such incident involving exorbitant charges by children involves the Smurf's Village app. In this incident, the child reportedly purchased berries and other items totaling a whopping US$1400. Earlier reports singled out Fishies by Playmesh, a virtual aquarium game for children. Fishies offers pearls for your tank which can cost as much as $149. Children hooked on the game and playing unattended have charged hundreds of dollars to their parent's iTunes account.
Apple has combated this problem by pointing out that parents can block all in-app purchases using iOS 4's parental controls. The ability to turn off in-app purchases places the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the parents who should lock their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch before handing it over to their children. Though these parental controls may be enough to thwart any action from the FTC, Apple may also decide to limit this 15-minute window and require a password for each in-app purchase. To disable in-app purchasing on your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Restrictions and enter a passcode when asked. Then, tap on "Enable Restrictions" and scroll down to "In-App Purchases" and flick the toggle to "OFF."

Переслать - Zaprudering the Invite: Anything to see?
Whatever you might think of Apple's grammar, there's not much this invitation's artwork is giving away. Of course, we all want to know: is there a camera up there? If so, we're not seeing evidence of it in the top-middle of the graphic. Perhaps there is a left-mounted camera hidden by March 2, or perhaps there is no camera to be seen at all, which will disappoint FaceTime chatters everywhere. Or perhaps Apple is simply being a tease. As usual.
The volume toggle and mute switch appear unchanged and I suppose it's nice to know that the virtual iPad has been fully charged before being incorporated into the invitation. The numeric battery charge meter is, however, out of action in this shot, which lends a certain falsity to the image.
The iPad appears to be sporting the iPhone 4 default wallpaper. Could that mean anything? Nah. Probably not.
Can you guess what technology or innovation will help define 2011 through the iPad? We're still scratching our head and making guesses here in TUAW-land.
Our own Kelly G. rolled her eyes at the language. While it's not TUAW's place to smack down Apple for a badly constructed sentence, we're more than happy to turn over pedant duties to our commenters. How would you have phrased your invitation? Let us know!

Переслать - Apple reportedly reduces iPad 2 production volume target
WIth an announcement of a second-generation iPad just around the corner, Digitimes is reporting that Apple's volume targets for the new device have been set lower.
While both Apple and iPad manufacturer Foxconn are mum on the subject, Digitimes stated that the forecasted manufacturing run for the iPad 2 for the period ending March 31 is now set at about 300,000 - 400,000 units compared to earlier estimates that were in the range of 400,000 - 600,000 units.
Some earlier rumors expressed concern over the ability of display suppliers to achieve the yield goals set by Apple, but Digitimes reports that since the company has three manufacturers to back up the supply of touch screen displays, that is not likely to cause delays in the shipment of the iPad 2.
Digitimes also noted that most upstream component suppliers (the manufacturers of components used by Foxconn to assemble the iPad) have not received word of a reduction in the iPad production volume target, and that Apple has been reducing the production of the original iPad in anticipation of the newer model being produced. Should Apple's suppliers not be able to meet the production goals, there could be shortages of the new iPad 2 in the short run.

Переслать - Why Amazon may not care about In-App Purchase
In all this furor about the App Store and In-App Purchases, we have not heard a peep from Amazon, the 800-pound gorilla of external content. (TUAW long since contacted Amazon for a statement, and, like everyone else, never heard anything back). Chuck Toporek of Addison Wesley/Pearson has a particularly insightful post up on his personal blog explaining why this may be so.
Amazon's Kindle for the Web has been in beta since September 2010, offering a potential web-based alternative to a native iOS app. Toporek writes that in his tests Kindle for Web worked beautifully for desktop and iPad, while the iPhone "takes a little extra work, but it can be done." Being in beta, full book texts are not yet available but if Amazon wishes to leave the App Store, it has a fully realized solution that it can move to that is already deployed and being tested.
Perhaps more content-dependent developers will be returning to Steve Jobs' original "sweet solution" of Web-based applications as the IAP drama plays out and HTML 5 continues to mature. The best way to deal with an unaccommodating Apple App Store may be to sidestep the store entirely. Why Amazon may not care about In-App Purchase originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST. Переслать - MacBook Pros to have better battery and HD screens, white Macbook finished
Rumors of the imminent MacBook Pro refresh are gaining even further momentum. So far, we've heard reports that the new, upcoming MacBook Pros will sport larger trackpads, weigh slightly less than the current models and have a 8 - 16 GB SSD boot drive to house Mac OS X (everything else will be stored on a separate HDD). It's also been reported that the new MacBook Pros will come with a custom all-SSD option, but at a higher price, of course.
Now, French Mac site MacGeneration has chimed in too. The site corroborates claims that the new MacBook Pros will feature a SSD (16GB mSATA) boot drive, providing faster startup times and performance improvements. It also claims that new MacBook Pros will weigh 200 - 300 grams less than the current versions: 1.8 kg for the 13-inch model, 2.3 kg for the 15-inch model and 2.65 kg for the 17-inch model.
The site also expects HD resolution displays (1,440 x 900 for the 13-inch model and 1,680 x 1,050 for the 15-inch model), plus a newer Core i3 chip, an extra USB port and 12 hours of battery life for the 13-inch model. The 15-inch model will have 10 hours of battery life.
Additionally, MacGeneration claims that customers will be able to order the 15- and 17-inch models with additional storage (a solid-state drive replacing the SuperDrive). The 17-inch model is expected to have 8 GB of RAM and the high-end 13-inch model will apparently have a matte screen order option, too. Also, the French site claims the MacBook Pros will see the introduction of a "new technology." Most likely, this will be the introduction of Light Peak, or, if again the rumors are to be believed, the now formally titled Thunderbolt technology.
And last, but not least, MacGeneration says the white MacBook model will be discontinued.

Переслать - MacTech compares Windows games running with Parallels 6
If you're a fan of Windows games and looking to play some of the latest titles on your Mac, your luck is in according to a MacTech test of game playability under virtualization with Parallels 6 (and not under VMware Fusion). They spent several weeks testing 20 top Windows games on MacBook Pros running Mac OS X 10.6.5, and concluded that five games gave a "great playable experience," earning 10/10 on the playability index. The winners were Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Empire: Total War, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition and Transformers: War for Cybertron. Ten games had "minor issues," and three others had '"significant issues," but only two -- Fallout: New Vegas and World in Conflict -- were deemed "not playable."
"Clearly, if you are a hard-gamer [looking] for the maximum gaming experience, you are going to turn to a souped up WinTel machine tuned specifically to gaming and running a game in virtualization is not a consideration," they say. "If, however, you are a casual gamer looking to enjoy a Windows game and avoid the hassles of booting in native Windows under Apple's Boot Camp, then playing a Windows game under virtualization can be a great option." There is no news yet, however, on how Minesweeper or Solitaire fared.

Переслать - Apple iAd minimum buy halved to $500,000
Apple is reportedly lowering the entrance fee for its iAd platform to US$500,000, a 50% reduction from its launch price of $1 million. This potential reduction would benefit smaller advertisers who can now afford to get their foot in the door of this mobile advertising platform.
Mark Read, CEO of marketing agency WPP Digital, echoes this sentiment when he says, "This new minimum buy is a great step forward and a necessary one, I think. Lowering the minimum buy to $500,000 from $1 million will certainly make the platform more appealing."
This rumored reduction may be tied to an earlier report that suggests Apple's iAd service is not performing up to Apple's expectations. The report claims Apple's iAd fill rate has fallen from 18% to a paltry 6%, primarily because advertisers are not willing to risk a minimum of $1 million on the nascent mobile advertising platform.
A drop in the minimum buy rate would attract new advertisers, especially since the ads are reportedly performing well for those companies that have signed onto the platform.Apple iAd minimum buy halved to $500,000 originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. Переслать - Rumor: Mac OS X Lion to have UI overhaul, developers to see beta build soon?
Since Apple's official announcement of Mac OS Lion last October, there's not been so much as a peep, let alone a roar, on the new operating system. We know to expect Lion at some point this summer, but as summer fast approaches, all we know about Lion is what Apple has told us (full-screen apps, Launchpad and Mission Control).
However, TechCrunch is reporting it's got wind of a few OS X Lion tidbits. Firstly, they claim that OS X Lion will have a major user interface overhaul. With Apple already introducing Launchpad, Mission Control and full-screen apps as key features of Lion -- all user interface related -- as well as well as saying they're bringing the best iOS to the Mac, it's not too far a stretch to expect we'll see some further significant changes to the new version of OS X. Unfortunately, that's all TechCrunch has got to say on the matter.
Secondly, in light of the above, TechCrunch says, "we're hearing that a developer beta [of Lion] should begin soon." With summer about four months away, developers will need time to prepare for the new UI features. While there's not much to corroborate this claim, MacRumors reports they've heard "...whispers that Lion may begin seeding soon," too.

Переслать - iPad folio case roundup: Three great ways to protect your iPad
Some pundits were calling Macworld Expo 2011 the "iPad Case Expo" since there were so many vendors on hand with either "me-too" products or totally unique ideas. While I think that label is somewhat unfair, there were a lot of iPad cases on display at Macworld.
A number of those designs showed up at my office during the show, so I decided to do a quick overview and comparison post of three of the best for TUAW readers. All three of these are what we refer to as folio cases in that they have a front and back cover, much like a book, and they generally provide a way to prop up the iPad in a number of positions. The latter trait of the iPad folio cases makes them the flexible yoga instructors of the iPad case world.
Now, let's take a look at some of these cool cases.

Переслать - Apple seeds sixth Mac OS 10.6.7 build to developers
Apple has seeded the sixth build of Mac OS 10.6.7 to developers for testing. Build 10J860 comes just five days after the release of the previous build, build 10J858.
No known issues are reported with the build, and developers have been asked to continue focusing their attention on AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application.
Although no one can predict when Apple will release the public version of 10.6.7, MacRumors suggests that because of the increased pace of build turnaround and the increment of just two build numbers from 10J858 to 10J860, the development of 10.6.7 could be very near completion.
AppleInsider reports the delta update weighs in at 400 MB, 34.4 MB smaller than the previous update.Apple seeds sixth Mac OS 10.6.7 build to developers originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 09:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - 'Dramatic and ambitious' new Final Cut Pro to debut this spring
TechCrunch reports that Final Cut Pro, Apple's professional video editing suite, is set for a major update this spring. According to TechCrunch, a small group of prominent video editors were recently invited to Apple's campus to try out the upcoming revamp to Final Cut Pro and give their feedback on it. If their reports are anything to go by, the next Final Cut Pro is nothing short of amazing.
One tester said the next version of FCP is "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago." Another calls the next Final Cut "dramatic and ambitious." Exact details on the changes from the current Final Cut Pro software are sparse, but that could be because, as TechCrunch notes, the next version of FCP encompasses "everything from low level architectural changes to a complete redesign of the user interface."
A Final Cut Pro redesign shouldn't come as a total shock. Apple reportedly reorganized the Pro Software team in 2009 and promoted Randy Ubillos, who lead the ground-up redesign of iMovie '08, to its project manager position. Final Cut Pro was last updated in July of 2009, and after its release there were rumors that FCP engineers had left Apple. That caused many to fear that Apple had abandoned future development of the software. One user even emailed Steve Jobs in August 2010 about the future of Final Cut Pro. Jobs took the time to email the user a reply and stated that the "Next release will be awesome."
"Awesome," "dramatic" and "ambitious." That's a lot to live up to. The next version of Final Cut Pro is reportedly set to be released this spring -- around the time of the annual National Association of Broadcasters conference, according to TechCrunch.'Dramatic and ambitious' new Final Cut Pro to debut this spring originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 09:00:00 EST. Переслать - Intel and Apple to launch Light Peak as Thunderbolt in the MacBook Pro
According to CNet, Intel is holding a press event on Thursday to launch its Light Peak technology. Light Peak is a high-speed connection technology that lets a single interface replace the SCSI, SATA, USB, FireWire, and PCI Express ports on a computer. The technology was introduced in 2009 and, according to an Intel executive, is ready to make its commercial debut. The current iteration of Light Peak is based on copper, not optical technology, and is expected to provide 10 gigabits per second bi-directional data transfer.
Rumors from as far back as November 2010 suggest Apple may incorporate Light Peak into its 2011 MacBook Pro models. The press event in San Francisco seems to corroborate this rumor as the Intel invite reportedly states the briefing will "discuss a new technology that is about to appear on the market." Apple was rumored to be working closely with Intel on this Light Peak technology and an early public demonstration of its capabilities was performed using a machine running Mac OS X.
Fsklog and Mac4Ever claim to have insider specs that suggest Light Peak will debut as Thunderbolt on the upcoming MacBook Pro notebooks. Combined, the two blogs purportedly have an image of the actual Light Peak port on a MacBook Pro (suspiciously looking like a mini-display port), an advertisement piece with the larger trackpad, a promotional logo for Thunderbolt and a spec sheet. Of course, all these images can be faked easily with Photoshopped and ThunderBolt is a trademark filed by Verizon for its upcoming LTE smartphone, so take this latter information with a grain of salt.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: MarketDash
Yahoo! sent us word that its new finance app, called MarketDash, is in the store now. While I'm not personally a big stocks guy, I think it looks good, and the iTunes reviews so far agree. The app is designed to tap into Yahoo! Finance, so if you have an account running over there, you can just pull it up in the app and get right to work. The app provides real-time data on whatever stocks you have set up, and you can even control watch lists and check your portfolio options from the iPad (and those will be linked back to your account on the Web).
MarketDash also includes content from Yahoo! Financial news feeds, and the iPad's touchscreen serves up a pretty good interface to the complicated charts and graphs you can see in the app. One of the iTunes reviews does say that some very specific features available on the Web aren't accessible in the app, but considering the app is just out of the gate, you can probably expect any really popular features to be brought over eventually.
Seems like a groovy stock tool, especially if you're already using Yahoo! Finance. The app, like the service, is completely free to use.TUAW's Daily App: MarketDash originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 08:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Munster: Mac sales up 20 percent this year
Apple's Mac sales are up 20 percent year-over-year and on target to meet expected sales of 3.6 million units in the March quarter, according to new domestic sales data from the NPD Group.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster revealed the figures, and he says that he believes early numbers from the first month of Apple's second quarter of fiscal year 2011 mean Apple is on course to meet Wall Street expectations. Investors are expecting year-over-year growth of around 22 percent in the March quarter, and although growth in the US has only been around 20 percent, Munster notes that Apple has seen faster growth of the Mac platform in international markets.
The sales figures may receive a further boost if Apple does indeed revamp the MacBook Pro line later this week. Munster believes that there is also continuing strong demand for the new MacBook Air, noting that the entry-level 11-inch model with its $999 price point currently occupies the most space in Apple Stores and has supported portable sales while users wait for the revamped MacBook Pro.
The NPD numbers also include US iPod sales, down 10 percent year-over-year in January. However, predicting sales based on NPD figures is difficult since international iPod sales represent a larger mix than international Mac sales. That said, Munster says Apple is on track to sell between 9.8 million and 10.3 million iPods in the March quarter, 5-10 percent less than during the same period in 2010.

Переслать - Ouch! Accident at Berkeley Apple Store construction site closes two businesses
Two walls have partially collapsed at the construction site for Apple's new Berkeley store, forcing two neighboring businesses to temporarily close. There was "A very large bang" at about 9:50 AM on the morning of February 22, according to George Kiskaddon, a partner at the book store Builders Booksource (located next door to the new Apple store). "One wall has been left leaning and bowing into the next door building," he said.
Site workers were apparently digging new foundations on the site of the former Slater Marinoff building when two of the remaining free-standing walls suddenly sank about four feet into the ground. Fire officers evacuated the neighboring buildings as soon as they arrived as a precautionary measure. "There were no injuries," said Assistant Chief Sabina Imrie of the Berkely fire department, adding that the suspicion is that recent rain may have made the walls' foundations unstable.

Переслать - I surrender, joining the ranks of the Airhead apocalypse
I own three Hackintosh netbooks. (Yes, each with a separate OS X license.) I love my Hackintosh netbooks, but I can't use those Hackintosh netbooks. I can no longer pry them out of the all-embracing hands of my Mac-addicted children.
Last Friday, I placed my order for a refurb/open box Air. I am about to join the Air Club for Men (and Women).
So why move up? After three netbooks with Hackintosh installs, all of which I was entirely happy with, why am I buying Apple? Three big reasons people: software update, use case and keyboard.
Frankly, I've grown a little tired of the the software update dance that's involved in all non-standard mods. Whether waiting for iPhone jailbreaks to catch up with the latest firmware or standing firm until I hear if an update will kill my Hackintoshes, I'm kind of over the wait-and-see game.Continue reading I surrender, joining the ranks of the Airhead apocalypse

Переслать - Apple patent offers peek at E-Wallet icon... or does it?
Patently Apple is running another of its excellent, exhaustively detailed listings of Apple's recently awarded patents. In the description of one of the awards, the site pointed out what they believe is an icon for an "E-Wallet" app, possibly pertaining to a Near Field Communications (NFC)-based electronic payment system. We've been hearing a lot about Apple's involvement with ISIS and NFC payments, so it seems likely that the drawing in this patent description could be pointing out the name and icon for such an Apple app. Or does it?
For years, mobile app developer Ilium Software has marketed an application called eWallet. That term is even a registered trademark of Ilium Software, although I don't know if the trademark covers other spellings or interCappings of the name. While perhaps Apple is going to use a similar term for an electronic payment system, I'm wondering if the artist who drew the patent illustration wasn't just making a nod to a Ilium's long history in the mobile space.
While the artist's conception uses the term "E-Wallet" rather than eWallet, the icon is similar to that used by Ilium Software. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that the artist simply borrowed the icon and app name for a long-standing mobile application to fill out a screen diagram. There are also only so many ways to draw a wallet.
Like the good folks at Patently Apple, though, we'd like to believe that the patent info is a hint of things to come in a future iPhone. What do you think? Is it an upcoming feature, a tip of the hat to Ilium Software's eWallet, or just a slow news day at TUAW? Let us know in the comments.

Переслать - Gameloft VP: 'There is room for premium games at a premium price on the iPhone'
PocketGamer got to chat with Gameloft's vice president of worldwide publishing Gonzague de Vallois at last week's Mobile World Congress, and he paints a pretty grim picture for small developers and small games on the iPhone. When the platform first started out, he says, gamers were happy with casual games put together by small teams, but as gamers' tastes are maturing and developers are getting better at utilizing the hardware, "there is already immense pressure on the prices but there is room for premium games at a premium price on the iPhone."
Case in point is EA -- its premium games are selling very well, and even when they're not, the company has learned how to make them profitable with well-timed sales. de Vallois does want to keep prices higher than 99 cents, and he says about EA's sale that Gameloft wasn't "that happy with the Christmas promotion because it was backed by Apple and they highlighted it on their store worldwide." Instead of simply dropping prices, de Vallois advocates finding new ways to make games profitable. "We try new models. There are new opportunities emerging with iOS to try, and you can expect more of these trials from us. You will see freemium, free to play, in-app purchase -- you will see the types of new models coming to our games this year."
Gameloft already started doing that -- its Sacred Odyssey action RPG is a free download that serves as a trial version, with a $6.99 in-app purchase to open up the rest of the content. We'll likely see more experiments from them in the future, as well as more premium content aimed towards a more experienced iOS gaming audience. It'll be interesting to see how this platform develops further -- devs both big and small are starting to put together very viable strategies for selling their games.Gameloft VP: 'There is room for premium games at a premium price on the iPhone' originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 20:30:00 EST. Переслать - Adult Swim releases free universal app with full episodes in the app
Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming division has been surprisingly Mac-friendly -- not only has it produced a number of great iOS games already, but its shows have included a number of Mac references as well (always in the service of comedy, of course). I guess it's no surprise that Adult Swim released a universal app of its own. Like many television apps, there are some extras, including a schedule of shows, and clock, weather and calendar features. But the real draw here is that you can watch full episodes of Adult Swim shows in the app, from Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job to Family Guy (reruns), Aqua Teen Hunger Force and, one of my favorites, The Venture Brothers.
And the best part is that the app is completely and totally free. If you're an Adult Swim fan at all, you'll definitely want to go get it off of the App Store right now. Great to see such a solid strategy from these guys on iOS -- I guess they definitely know where their audience is.Adult Swim releases free universal app with full episodes in the app originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 19:30:00 EST. Переслать - Apple, others in talks to improve quality of music downloads
CNN reports that Apple is in touch with record labels to try and improve the quality of the downloadable music it sells on iTunes and elsewhere. Currently, the MP3s sold on iTunes are formatted as 16-bit files, but under the new proposal, they'd be upgraded to 24-bit files, which means the files would have more audio data included, and thus be able to play out at a higher resolution.
As Chris Foresman at Ars argues, however, it may not matter. While higher quality is always nice to have (and there's no reason Apple shouldn't have it, unless the audio needs to be compressed further for streaming or other memory concerns), most people won't hear the full resolution anyway. You can have the highest quality audio files you want, but when you're playing them through a set of cheap speakers (or even the MacBook's default built-in speakers), you're not going to hear all of the highs and lows that you should.
Still, it will be nice to have the higher resolution, and it'll give Apple and iTunes yet another selling point if the agreement can be made (not to mention sell a lot of higher-quality audio speakers and other products as well). So, I expect we'll see it happen before long. Remember way back in 2007 when Apple raised the encoding rate to 256 Kb/s?

Переслать - Digital Chocolate picks up $12 million in funding round, mostly from Intel
Digital Chocolate is one of the biggest iPhone developers that no one talks about much, but maybe that'll change now that the company has picked up a whopping $12 million in venture capital. The company behind a huge amount of iOS titles of all kinds (with more than 100 million mobile downloads total) has raised a total of $54 million so far, and most of this latest round of funding came from Intel, along with a few other venture capital firms.
Digital Chocolate seems like a rarity among many App Store developers. While much of the movement on the App Store has been hit-driven, Digital Chocolate instead uses a shotgun approach, delivering lots of different apps that reach their audiences in a variety of different ways. Not all companies can pull a strategy like that off, but whatever Digital Chocolate is doing obviously seems to be working.Digital Chocolate picks up $12 million in funding round, mostly from Intel originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Introducing TUAW Meetups on April 3 to celebrate the iPad and multiplayer games
Love the iPad? Want to meet fellow enthusiasts? If you're familiar with Meetup.com already you know that for groups who share a common interest like the iPad, it's a low-friction way to assemble those affinity groups and share real-world experiences. In other words: it's a great way to set up a meetup!
We're hip to this vibe and have partnered up with Meetup to "host" our first in a series of gatherings. The first one will be April 3, the anniversary of the iPad being available to the masses. Specifically, we're inviting people to set up local get-togethers through the Meetup page here, bring your iPads and play board games (like Reiner Knizia's Battleline or Small World) or multiplayer games (like Carcassonne or Real Racing 2).
It's a no-pressure, fun way to get together with other iPad enthusiasts. You're welcome to share tips, cool apps and stories as well -- with Meetup the events are really shaped by the hosts, so we hope to see a variety of fun events out there.
These could take place in a coffee shop or any other public space, preferably one with Wi-Fi. Just go to this Meetup page, either sign up to become a host or sign up to attend an event and set your calendar for April 3. Over the next several weeks we'll detail our own hosts' plans (we're hoping to establish a few with our writers so you can meet the fine bloggers here at TUAW in real life) and share what events have been set up where we don't have staff.
Above all, have fun with this! The iPad is a fun, magical device, and we hope your meetups are as well. Let us know in the comments if you plan to host or attend one.

Переслать - Memory of Colors is a coffee table book on an iPad
Memory of Colors is a photographic celebration of the diversity of man in a wide variety of colors. It's the result of a 12 year project by photographer Jaime Ocampo-Rangel as he visited 18 countries to photograph the diversity of people. The app, which was released today, is a stunning series of portraits, with information on the countries and customs of the people pictured via Wikipedia.
In today's digital and connected world, diversity is under threat, so hopefully these pictures won't be a catalog of people from our past.
The app should appeal to photography lovers and anyone interested in our cultural differences. The app has a very inviting GUI. You can email photos, send them to Facebook or Twitter, or use them as wallpaper on your iOS device. There are about 1300 photos, and they are tagged so that you can search by country, or even the predominant or thematic color of the image. You can browse the photos, look at slide shows and see where the photos were taken on a map.

If you're looking for a good note-taking app for your iPhone (especially if you're fed up with the built-in app's syncing non-functionality), check out this comparison of four of them from Dr. Drang. Simplenote, Elements, PlainText and Nebulous Notes are all compared for cost, syncing, TextExpander support, fonts, searching, sorting, full-screen mode, word count and more. The apps vary in price from US$1.99 (Nebulous Notes) to Simplenote's $20/year subscription, via PlainText and
Nebulous NotesElements, both at $4.99.Dr. Drang's favorite is Elements; he says, "W hile I'm still not happy with its use of byte-order marks and CRLF line endings, overall it fits my way of working better than the others."
