- More thoughts on The Daily
I've been reading the News Corp. iPad newspaper The Daily since it came out last week. While my first impressions led to a positive review, the more I use it the less I like it.
First, it is VERY slow to load if it loads at all (an impression shared by others). Recently I'm getting a lot of black screens and am dumped back to the iPad app screen. When it works, the slow load, which is often more than 30 seconds over WiFi, is just too long. The app should at least display a table of contents or top news stories while it downloads so you don't wind up staring into space.
The news content does not appear to be aimed at a serious news reader. The second highlighted category is 'gossip.' The balance of news to fluff is seriously leaning toward the fluff. Horoscopes, celebrity news, and other tabloid content just aren't appealing to this news consumer, and there is no way to turn those sections off.
The app itself has a beautiful layout. It's appealing to the eye, and easy to navigate. The one exception is the requirement to have to rotate the iPad to portrait from landscape to read some stories. That seems just silly, and I hope that will be repaired. There is no tech section -- that's odd for something being sold to iPad owners. There seems to be some tech content under apps and games, but then that section isn't labeled properly.

Переслать - Talkcast, 7PM PST/10PM EST: Verizon iPhones and The Daily
If it's Sunday night, it must be Talkcast time! Tonight's live show will likely include a sprinkling of Macworld chat, along with other newsy bits from the week. We had Verizon iPhones line up for preorder, The Daily launch event, and another wave of iPad 2 rumors. Also, don't forget that Kelly hosting equals aftershow!
Your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be, otherwise I'm just talking to myself. To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or download the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the Talkshoe Web button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cellphone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk to you tonight!

Переслать - App Reviews: Stratego vs. The General
Stratego is a classic board game. It's so common that you can probably find a decent copy at your local thrift store for the same price as one of the two iDevice versions available on the App Store. If you want a pocketable version instead, what will you get for your money? We've got a comparison review of both the official version of Stratego (iPhone/iPod touch only, available for US$1.99) and The General, a well-done clone (universal, also $1.99).
There is a third Stratego-like option on the App Store, something called Marshal, but that uses a hex-based board and has a bunch of bad user reviews, so I let it slide for this review. Keep reading to see which of the two versions of Stratego is most worth your money.Continue reading App Reviews: Stratego vs. The General

Переслать - Mobile version of iTunes Store gets Genius recommendations
The desktop version of the iTunes Store has had Genius recommendations for quite some time, but the feature has been missing from the iPhone/iPod touch version of the Store -- until now. Tapping on the "More" tab at the bottom of the iTunes Store app will reveal the usual options, with a new option for Genius recommendations.
Just like on the desktop version, you'll be able to view recommendations for music, movies, and TV shows based on your purchase history. You can preview recommendations and rate them "thumbs up" or "thumbs down." Results for music recommendations can be filtered to show songs or albums, and you can also filter results by genre.
Just like the recent introduction of search filtering in the iPad's App Store app, you don't need to download anything to start using the new Genius features. All the necessary changes have already been made on Apple's servers, so you can start tapping away and previewing Genius recommendations on your iOS device whenever you're ready.

Переслать - In Arlington, TX? Try the official Super Bowl app
If you happen to be in Texas for Super Bowl XLV, it's worth your time to download the official app for the Super Bowl. While you could cobble together the same functionality from Google Maps and Yelp and a few other apps with food, travel and event info, why bother? The Super Bowl app is free and offers some pretty useful information.
First, you will want to be on WiFi for the initial opening of the app, as it will download all the mapping info on first run. After that you'll have a 3D map of Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and buttons which will highlight area events, places to eat and more. You can use 2 fingers to rotate your 3D view, but the 3D is a bit of a gimmick, and this is no GPS app.Points of interest are filled with live data, and I found the Super Bowl events to be interesting, as you'll want to find real, live parties before, during and after the game. There's also a usable search tool which you can see in the gallery -- I used it to find local pizza places. Be sure to pull down menus for Dining, Nightlife, Shopping and Entertainment to see what's open at a given hour, or sort by price. You can tap on certain buildings to see what's there as well. During the game, when you're actually at the stadium, you can "enter" the 3D stadium to see gate, elevator and restroom locations.
If you aren't in Texas for the game, check out our apps for planning a Super Bowl party.

Переслать - Switchers: Get "Learn the Switch to Mac" for a buck in the Mac App Store
We've been hearing a lot about how many new Mac users there are. During the January first-quarter financial call, for example, we heard that not only were Mac sales up 23% over the same quarter a year earlier, but about half of the Macs sold in Apple Stores during that quarter were to people who had never owned a Mac before.
For people switching from PCs to Macs, there's not a lot of help available other than scheduling a One-to-One session at the local Apple Store or begging assistance from a Mac-owning friends. For a while, though, developer Saied Ghaffari and his company It's About Time Products have had a Mac app available that can help switchers learn how to make the most of Mac OS X and many of the built-in apps.
The app, called "Learn the Switch to Mac," has been available in a special bundle with Parallels Desktop for $99. It uses the tested learning method of showing someone how to perform an action, then letting them try that action themselves. Saied explains how you'd do something in Windows, then demonstrates the similar action in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Saied has now made the app available (without Parallels Desktop) in the Mac App Store at an introductory price of US$0.99. The normal price for the Mac App Store edition of "Learn the Switch to Mac" will be $24.95, so if you are interested in learning more about your new Mac or helping out a friend who has just purchased his or her first Mac, let them know about this great deal.
A video explaining how the app works can be viewed on the next page.
