- Rumor: iPad 2 announcement at end of February for March release
The iPad 2 rumor mill is in full production mode now, with the latest coming from Japanese Mac site MacOtakara.
According to the translation (unfortunately from Google Translate and not our very own Japan-based Rick Martin), Apple is planning on a short event toward the end of February during which the features and release date of the new device are to be announced.
Production of the new device is apparently on hold due to the Chinese New Year celebrations, which began on February 3rd and should end the morning of February 17th. The picture at right is from the site, although we have no idea if that's a touchscreen from an existing or future iPad.
MacOtakara believes that the release will be made in March, although the exact timing and distribution (i.e., worldwide vs. U.S. only) are uncertain. We don't know where the site got their information or if this is simply yet another case of wild speculation, so take this rumor with a great deal of skepticism.
We are, however, seeing an increased number of reports of iPad 2 parts being shipped to repair depots, an iPad 2 prototype was apparently spotted this week at launch of The Daily, and unconfirmed rumors are saying that an iPad 2 ad was filmed in LA this week featuring a FaceTime call on the new camera-carrying tablet.

Переслать - Paris and Palo Alto getting new Apple Stores
ifoAppleStore has news of two new stores opening up soon. First up, Paris is getting another new store (in addition to the Opera store opened there recently) in the Carré Sénart shopping and entertainment complex, about 30 miles south of downtown. The area is reportedly quite built up as a commercial complex, so it sounds about right for an Apple Store to be there as well. That store is scheduled to open by November.
And Palo Alto, right near me in California, is also getting another store, though this time to replace the one that's already here. Instead of closing and re-opening the store, Apple apparently plans to demolish another building a few blocks away (seen above), and build a brand new store in its place. The new store design will have a glass entrance and roof, and use natural light to connect the inside with the outside. It sounds great -- the new store will probably be up and running sometime in 2012.

Переслать - Asustek chairman has "secret weapon" to compete with iPad 2
The chairman of Eee PC netbook maker Asustek Computer Jonney Shih is claiming to have a "secret weapon" to help his company compete with the iPad 2 when it is released in a few months. As reported by PCWorld, Shih recently talked with IDG News Service about the future of Eee PC netbooks but played coy when asked if the secret weapon was a new kind of tablet computer, saying "I think it's best not to say now. You will have to wait until the launch."
As recently as August 2010 it was reported that Asustek was selling fewer netbooks because of the success of the iPad, with only 14 percent of those shoppers interested in portable computing still considering a netbook over a tablet computer. With this in mind, Shih is going to need something special to keep up with the estimated 48 million iPads to be sold in 2011.
Anyone care to chime in as to what the "secret weapon" may be? A nuclear-powered netbook? A tablet computer that doubles as a dinner plate? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.Asustek chairman has "secret weapon" to compete with iPad 2 originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Where To? adds augmented reality
I've looked at Where To? in the past, and found it a well thought out way to find points of interest in your vicinity. Another plus is that it integrates with the Navigon and TomTom apps so you can send information for precise navigation.
Now the app has added a new wrinkle, augmented reality. Basically that means in either portrait or landscape mode your camera will activate and points of interest in categories you select can be seen layered over the real-time image. The closer the location, the bigger the marker. Generally, I think augmented reality is overblown and not all that helpful, but the developers of Where To? have overcome some of the hazards of the feature and made it easier to use. When lots of labels appear very close together, you can zoom in and move them apart. Improvements have also been made to eliminate compass lag, which has affected more than a few AR apps.
If you liked Where To? before, you'll like the improvements. The augmented reality feature is an additional $0.99 cents over the $2.99 purchase price of the app, and you can try the feature free for 30 days. I think this implementation of AR works well, and has clearly been thought out. There are plenty of free apps that will give you the same information, like Around Me or Google Places. If you don't opt for the AR feature, you'll get maps of your destinations, or a list view with the closest locations at the top. All the apps draw from the same database, but I like the integration of Navigon and TomTom, and I think the AR is actually useful rather than a gimmick. I do think it should have just been included in the basic purchase price, but on the other hand, I think it is worth the extra dollar. Where To? runs on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It requires iOS 3.0 or greater.

Переслать - 60% of iPad 2 models to be 3G versions
Contrary to an early claim from AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson that the iPad would be a "Wi-Fi driven product" and that "there's not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription," AppleInsider is reporting that over 60 percent of the first production run of the iPad 2 will be 3G models. In speaking to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, they learned that at least 62 percent of the five million iPad 2 devices Apple is preparing prior to sale will be 3G units, with 46 percent set aside for GSM/UMTS networks and 16 percent for CDMA/EVDO networks.
When the iPad was released back in April 2010, the Wi-Fi version was available for three weeks before the Wi-Fi+3G version, so a lot of Wi-Fi-only iPads were sold at first. But in just the first 28 days of sales, Apple sold a combined 1 million units and went on to sell almost 15 million iPads in all of 2010. Recent analyst reports peg sales of the iPad at 48 million in 2011, meaning that almost 30 million of them should be 3G devices.
Currently, AT&T offers 3G data plans at US$14.99 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB, while Verizon offers 1GB for $20, 3GB for $35, 5GB for $50, or $80 for 10GB.60% of iPad 2 models to be 3G versions originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 18:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - How the iPad and iPhone shift reading habits
Read It Later is an Instapaper-style platform for saving and tracking various things to read online, and they recently released some interesting information about iPad and iPhone reading over on their blog. The line for when people save articles is pretty constant no matter what hour of the day you're talking about -- we're pretty often browsing for and discovering new things to read all of the time. But when you look at the graphs about when people retrieve those articles on their mobile devices, you see some interesting trends.
The iPhone graph, seen above, has lots of little peaks in it, but those peaks come at "in-between" times -- when we're eating some breakfast, traveling via commute, or about to go to bed. That's fascinating -- according to this data, the iPhone is really a whitespace device, providing productivity when we don't have access to anything else. And the iPad graph is interesting as well -- as you can see on RiL's page, it sees most of its activity later in the evening, when we're on the couch just relaxing.
And there's one more little bit of interesting data -- users who own an iPad are apparently doing less reading on their computers during the day. In other words, they're saving articles specifically for iPad time, because apparently they prefer to do more reading on the iPad itself. Remember, these are brand new categories of devices, and it's really crazy to see how they're changing our habits so quickly.

Переслать - AT&T strikes back at Verizon with voice/data ad
Verizon may have their iPhone 4 coming on line in a matter of days, but AT&T isn't taking the assault on their market lightly.
A new AT&T ad titled "Answer" shows a man working late and receiving a call from his wife on his iPhone 4. As she reminds him that it's their anniversary, he surfs and talks at the same time to quickly try to make dinner reservations and turn a potentially bad situation into a good one.
The Verizon iPhone 4, of course, won't have the ability to provide voice and surfing capability at the same time. Good zinger, AT&T.
The video can be seen in its entirety on the next page.

Переслать - Real Racing 2, Grand Theft Auto, others on sale this weekend
A whole slew of apps are going on sale this weekend, including Firemint's Real Racing 2 (which has dropped down to half price at $4.99), and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (also $4.99, down by the same discount). Adult Swim's hilarious little Robot Unicorn Attack running game is only 99 cents, on sale for both iPad and iPhone. In fact, all of the Adult Swim titles are on sale for just 99 cents, so you can look through those to see what you like.
I'm not sure what the impetus is behind this sale, but it's best not to ask questions. If you need a few new games to play this weekend (and honestly, I'm not sure you do, given all of the great titles on the App Store lately -- I'm still loving Battleheart), there you go.Real Racing 2, Grand Theft Auto, others on sale this weekend originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - Motorola Super Bowl ad pokes fun at Apple users
The Super Bowl means elaborate and expensive TV ads. I think there's a football game, too.
This year, Motorola will poke fun at iPhone users with a commercial for the Xoom that features homogenous, mindless drones who all look alike and use the same chuck of hardware. The standout -- a handsome young gentleman using the Xoom -- is even reading Orwell's 1984.
Sound familiar? It's an obvious poke at Apple's 1984 ad (which aired during a Super Bowl) that prompted mindless business machine users to break from the pack and use a Macintosh. You can view a teaser after the break and watch for the full thing on Sunday.Continue reading Motorola Super Bowl ad pokes fun at Apple users

Переслать - Want a job at Apple? Here's how to get it
So, you want to work for Apple. You're not alone -- a lot of people love the company so much that they'd do anything to work for Apple. Blogger James Holland at Electricpig has written a detailed guide on how to increase your chances of being hired by the geniuses of Cupertino.
Most of his guide is common sense -- you need to study, make contacts, be prepared for the interview, and know the internal culture of the company. For those seeking employment, those tips are excellent no matter where you're trying to get a job. But Holland's guide goes beyond the obvious, pointing out that joining Apple's Developer Program is a great idea even if you're not a developer, noting that Jony Ive visits his alma mater (Northumbria University) from time to time if you're interested in meeting him, and even suggesting that if all else fails, you can always try to be one of the 1-in-200 applicants who gets hired at an Apple retail store.
Holland makes other points that are great for anyone who is looking to either start a new career at The Big Fruit or perhaps move ahead in their boring, humdrum jobs. One that I personally feel is important for anyone is to "never stop studying." Heck, even as a fifty-something tech geek, I find it a necessity to learn new things to stay at the peak of my game.
Whether you want to walk the halls of Apple or are just seeking some job-hunting tips that can help you to get start or advance a career in tech, Holland's post is worth a detailed read.
