- PC World placement inadvertently suggests you get a Mac
It's Friday, and a little levity seems appropriate: the FAILblog has posted an image of a newsstand where the cover of PC World, which touts the "Best upgrades for your buck," clearly points to Macworld (and it's apparent this picture was taken some years ago, as the upgrade in question is to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard). Obviously unintentional, at least on PC World's part (I can't speak for the newsstand owner), but a good chuckle nonetheless.
FAILblog lists it as a "win," so clearly they're biased in the same way I am. With the apps included in a Mac OS X distribution, combined with the quality of the hardware and great service agreements, Macs actually are a great "upgrade for your buck." Not to mention, they're awesome.

Переслать - NFL could replace play books with iPads
CNET is reporting that the NFL is considering replacing bulky coach's play books with iPads. For now, the Dallas Cowboys and "a couple" other teams are mulling over the switch, would could save them "...up to 5,000 pages of paper printouts per game."
Besides the cost (and environmental) benefits of eliminating all that paper, a networked iPad would give coaches and players access to data in whole new ways. Imagine scrolling through clearly-presented plays, some complete with animation. Or real-time communication with coordinators in the booth. Plus, all of those photos of the field that are printed on the sideline could be pushed to an iPad seconds after the play was complete, in full color. Heck, push video.
Also, a lost iPad could be remotely wiped. The same can't be said for a lost play book.
Another added benefit: they'll just look cool with a big logo Gelaskin on the back.
Of course, it's not as easy as relieving coaches of their binders and handing over tables. As the Dallas Cowboys head of technology Peter Walsh explains, security is a top concern. Teams must be certain that networks and the iPads are secure, and that their intellectual property is protected (you listening, Bill?).
It's an interesting idea, and one that I've been harping on for a year now. Perhaps next season we'll see some next-generation iPads on the sidelines. Just keep them away from the celebratory champagne.NFL could replace play books with iPads originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 11:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Greenp0ison jailbreak tool updated
Last night the Chronic Dev Team released a version of greenpois0n which allows you to jailbreak iOS devices running 4.2.1. The update also allows you to reboot without having to re-jailbreak. The update is only available for the Mac, and be sure you read the documentation before jailbreaking! Be aware that as of this writing the greenpois0n site is down, so you can't download the app. We'll update this post when it returns.Greenp0ison jailbreak tool updated originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 10:45:00 EST. Переслать - Turn an iPod touch into an iPhone with its own packaging
Here's a nice bit of ingenuity. Lifehacker reader Kevin explains how he used a VoIP app (Viber and Line 2 are two nice options) with his iPod's packaging and earbud speakers to create a DIY handset.
After smoothing the edges of the plastic backing and wearing a groove to hold the earbud wire, Kevin used a Dremmel to place a hole in the back of the plastic, sealing it with a rubber washer to prevent the hole from slicing the wire. Next, he threaded it through and pulled the wire tight to hold it in place. The result is a functional and decidedly geeky iPod touch phone.
Well done, Kevin! You'll find additional photos here.Turn an iPod touch into an iPhone with its own packaging originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 10:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - iPhone breaks Verizon sales record in 2 hours
It's a good day in Big Red's financial offices. As if burning through its pre-order stock in about 17 hours wasn't good enough, the company realized its best sales day ever in the first 120 minutes of the pre-sale.
It's even more amazing considering that the record was set between 3 AM and 5 AM Eastern. That's a lot users with bleary red eyes staring at the Buy button. Enough, in fact, to eclipse any single-day sales numbers for a single item that Verizon has previously enjoyed.
Verizon hasn't shared actual numbers, but we're comfortable with saying "more than ten."
VERIZON WIRELESS HAS RECORD SALES ON FIRST DAY OF iPHONE 4
Available to General Public on Feb.10
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. - At 8:10 p.m. EST yesterday, Verizon Wireless ceased online orders of iPhone 4 to existing customers and ended the most successful first day sales in the history of the company.
"This was an exciting day," said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. "In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer --- designed to reward them for their loyalty.
"I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day," he added.
Mead also said customers will have another opportunity at being among the nation's first to own an iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network.
"Yesterday's launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America."
The general market launch of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network will occur on February 10. The company will open its more than 2000 Verizon Wireless Stores at 7 a.m. It will also be available at all Apple store locations, Best Buy, select Wal-Mart stores, and on-line at verizonwireless.com and apple.com.iPhone breaks Verizon sales record in 2 hours originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 09:15:00 EST. Переслать - TUAW's Daily App: Moon Drop
NimbleBit, the company behind Pocket Frogs (which is still one of my favorite games on the App Store), has decided to change all of its titles on the store to the low, low price of free, so if you've never picked up Dizzypad, Sky Burger or this cute little physics-based arcade game, in which you need to safely land as many colonists on the moon as possible, now is the time. The game's quite simple, but just like all of NimbleBit's titles, the polish and charm keep it interesting.
No, it's not a vast title (and while there is Plus integration, there's not a lot to do other than try to beat your own score), but NimbleBit has decided to give away all of its titles for the foreseeable future simply because "free is more fun," so you might as well jump in and check them out. I'll be curious to see what's next from these guys -- they've certainly learned a lot from their previous success with Pocket Frogs, and they're clearly taking those lessons to heart.TUAW's Daily App: Moon Drop originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 08:00:00 EST. Переслать - iPad's App Store gets search filters
According to MacStories, the iPad's App Store app just gained a very useful new feature: search filters. There are now five different filters you can assign to app searches: Category, Release Date, Customer Rating, Price and Device. Popovers allow users to adjust or clear filters.
This added search functionality hasn't made it to the iPhone/iPod touch App Store apps yet, but considering how cramped the screens are on those devices, it might never show up. Notably, these filters also aren't yet available on the desktop version of the App Store, so right now the iPad seems like the best way to search for apps.
No update is required on your end; this is a backend change to the App Store itself, so if you're using an iPad, you should already be seeing this updated feature. Search away!

Переслать - TUAW app updated, should fix your iPad woes
A few readers wrote in to tell us that the updated TUAW app was crashing on the iPad. We promised a fix, and hopefully we've delivered: TUAW version 2.0.2 is now available on the App Store. Please note that while this does correct the iPad crash and several other bugs, there is still a different in-app storage setup for saved articles and your saved posts will not transfer to the new version -- please make a separate note of them before upgrading.
TUAW writer TJ Luoma reports the app is working fine on his iPad now. Give us feedback, either here in the comments or via our feedback form, and tell us how it's running for you now. As for when we'll have an iPad-formatted version of our app, that's unfortunately still up in the air. Meanwhile, we hope the iPhone version of our app works better for you after the update.

Переслать - Verizon iPhone pre-orders sold out, new VZW iPhone ad debuts
Contrary to the anticipation of some midnight ramblers (or, to be precise, three in the morning bandits), the Verizon subscriber-exclusive pre-order window didn't close for business before the sun rose on the East Coast this morning. It took all of 17 hours or so for the initial allocation of pre-order Verizon iPhones to get churned through, meaning there won't be any more orders placed until 3:01 AM ET on February 9 (online orders) or 7 AM local time on 2/10 (store purchases).
Given that demand for the device is expected to remain extremely high -- AppleInsider cites a uSamp survey finding that a jaw-dropping 54 percent of VZW's Android and BlackBerry users say they're either very likely or somewhat likely to buy the iPhone -- there's not much need for Verizon to stoke opening day demand. That's not stopping Big Red, though, as the company released a new television ad showing the sleek lines of the iPhone 4 and closing on a variation of a very familiar tagline. Video embedded in the continuation of this post.
The last time we asked, in January, about 1/4 of you were interested in picking up the Verizon phone (even if that meant making the leap from another carrier). Let's ask again, but this time just current VZW subscribers: ready to buy?

Переслать - Apple (re)posts Xcode 4 GM
Apple teased us Thursday afternoon with a sneak peek at the Xcode 4 GM before pulling it. Now, the company has re-posted the gold master and it's ready for registered developers to go and download.
Xcode 4 introduces a fully updated integrated design environment for Mac and iOS developers with lots of beautiful new bells and whistles that were first introduced in a WWDC keynote last summer. It's been a long time waiting for this new tool to come out of beta, but we're all glad it's finally here.

Переслать - The iPhone user's Down Under travel guide
If you own an iPhone and you're traveling to Australia or New Zealand, you might be wondering how your handset will work Down Under. The good news: as long as you have a GSM-model iPhone (i.e., not the Verizon iPhone), and as long as it's unlocked, your iPhone will work just fine down here. But there are still some tips you'll need to get the most out of your iPhone on our corner of Earth.
First of all, if you want to use your iPhone's voice and data features overseas without hunting for WiFi hotspots, you have two options. First, you can stick with your current SIM and pay your carrier's international roaming fees, but these are usually extortionately expensive, especially for data. For instance, with AT&T you'll pay over a dollar per megabyte for data on a DataConnect Pass-Global plan. Things are even worse with many international carriers; my carrier, Vodafone NZ, charges NZ$5 per megabyte to roam in Australia, and $10 per megabyte in most other countries. Given the high cost of international roaming, even very light overseas usage can add up to more than your monthly bill; heavy usage (and poor planning) can lead to charges in the thousands of dollars.
A much cheaper alternative is to unlock your iPhone and buy a pre-pay SIM from an overseas carrier, then switch back to your normal SIM when you return to your home country. Ask your local telco nicely if they'll unlock your iPhone for international travel; if you're with AT&T, well, good luck with that. Alternatively, just jailbreak the thing and unlock it that way. You can always revert to standard firmware when you return home. It's important to note again that the Verizon iPhone is completely incompatible with all networks in Australia and New Zealand, and it will basically be nothing more than an expensive iPod touch for the duration of your stay.

Переслать - The New York Times to provide reporters with the iPhone 4
The New York Times is giving their mobile reporters iPhone 4s to shoot video out in the field along with the ability to upload them to NYT servers using Aspera's high-speed file transfer software. Brought to our attention by MacStories, The New York Times' Editorial Director for Video and Television, Ann Derry, recently spoke to the Beet.TV Online Video Journalism Summit about the decision, saying that the iPhone 4 is a "game changer" for mobile video and the news business.
The first NYT staff member to receive and use his new iPhone 4 was Andrew Ross Sorkin, who used it for his coverage of The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. You can watch his report, "Setting the Stage at Davos," over at the NYT site.
With a critically acclaimed director shooting movies with an iPhone and even some professional photographers giving them a go, it's no surprise that the media is starting to use them as real-time news-collecting devices. When even my local news station asks me each night to send in any video I take with my iPhone, I know it has become a rather mainstream phenomenon.

Переслать - HotelPal 2.0: A first look at the updated lodging reservation app
Business and personal travelers with iPads and iPhones are familiar with Mobiata's travel apps already. The company's FlightTrack (US$4.99) and FlightTrack Pro ($9.99) apps are often listed as "must-have" tools for travelers, and the fun FlightBoard ($3.99) turns your iPhone or iPad into a live flight departure and arrival board for any airport.
Mobiata rolled out the free HotelPal app for iPhone in 2010, and now there's an iPad-optimized version that has shipped along with the updated 2.0 version. What's the app for? Looking at hotel listings for almost any destination, and then actually making reservations from the app. Think of it this way; you're stuck at an airport in a strange city because of a blizzard, and you'd like to find a hotel that isn't too expensive, yet still comfortable and clean. Launching HotelPal on your iPhone or iPad (I looked at the iPad app), the app determines where you are and then immediately populates a map with little price tags indicating the nightly rate. You can also type in a location or tap on a map to drop a location pin, after which HotelPal populates the map with hotel pins and prices.

Переслать - Mac App Store promo codes are now available worldwide
Back in December, MacStories reported that Apple wasn't making promo codes (simple codes used to give away copies of an app) available in the Mac App Store. But it looks like Apple has reconsidered, as MacStories is reporting a change, allowing Mac App Store promo codes in any Mac App Store worldwide (it took a while for iOS App Store codes to go international). As before, developers are limited to 50 codes per version of an app.

Переслать - Counterfeit version of open source game Lugaru HD being sold on Mac App Store
Another developer is offering Wolfire Game's Lugaru HD title on the Mac App Store for 1/5 of what the official game is selling for. How? As per the terms of the Humble Indie Bundle a while back, Wolfire decided to open source the game, though not its assets or characters, and the other version on the Mac App Store is an outright copy with assets included. Kotaku tracked down the developers, who apparently don't believe they've done anything wrong, saying that "we have every legal right to market and sell the software, and we feel that $1.99 is a fair price." The official version sells for $9.99.
The worst part here is that Apple obviously approved the app, and as of this writing has not yet taken the app down. Wolfire hasn't yet heard back from Apple, and a spokesperson from the company says only that it's looking into the matter. Then again, issues of intellectual property are often left to developers to negotiate outside the App Store. This is an unfortunate instance where the App Store could clamp down on obvious infringement.
The case seems pretty clear-cut -- Wolfire did open source its title, but it also made clear that it retained rights to all of the assets. Since it's fairly apparent that those are being used in the "unofficial" release, I'd expect Apple to take the offending version off of the store soon enough.Counterfeit version of open source game Lugaru HD being sold on Mac App Store originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 18:33:00 EST. Переслать - iAds more effective than TV advertising, Nielsen finds
Nielsen is reporting, according to the results of a new survey, that Apple's iAds for Campbell's soup products were more than twice as effective as television advertising for the same product. Nielsen says that customers who saw ads for Campbell's in Apple's operating system were five times as likely to recall the brand name, and three times as likely to remember what the ad said. The iAd audience said they were likely to purchase the product five times more than the television audience.
Now, Nielsen admits that there could simply be demographic differences here -- the average television audience just may not be as engaged in the brand as the average iAd audience. But either way, results like these are good news for Apple's advertising platform, which we've heard anecdotally has been struggling a bit. Not only are developers not seeing the returns they'd like from the platform, but Apple has missed out on a few big deals with advertisers as well.
Results like these show that iAds definitely have a reason for their premium pricing, even if it is a matter of just making sure both audiences and advertisers are coming from the right angle. But premium priced products sold to a certain type of customer? Fortunately, Apple knows a little bit about how to do that.iAds more effective than TV advertising, Nielsen finds originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. Переслать - Apple patents suggest iPad "kickstand," graphics pen
Apple's R&D is always hard at work coming up with various ideas for Apple products, and when they do, Apple usually lays down the paperwork for patents on them, whether they're destined for actual release or not. A few of these wacky ideas have popped up in the USPTO lately, and while they'll likely never see the light of day as real products, they do show just how busy they are coming up with new ideas in Cupertino.
First up, one of the patents describes a built-in stand for the iPad. We've certainly seen plenty of third-party stands for Apple's tablet, but Apple has apparently designed an official solution that bends out from the back and holds in two positions -- one for standing up straight and another for standing down lower, as you'd have it if you were typing out something on the keyboard. The stand would feature a dual hinge, and it could even be rotated around.
Elsewhere in the patent office, Apple is also working on something surprising: a stylus for use on its touchscreen surfaces. Steve Jobs famously said that "if you see a stylus, they blew it," but apparently some of Apple's engineers disagree and are working on a prototype. The stylus would provide more exact interaction with the touchscreen (Apple's patent describes how to get the smaller stylus working with a touchscreen built for fingers), and it would likely make tasks like drawing and writing easier on the iPad and iPhone. Both patents are interesting, but don't hold your breath on seeing these on stage at the next event.Apple patents suggest iPad "kickstand," graphics pen originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - Verizon iPhone orders already shipping
Those of you who placed your pre-order for the Verizon iPhone 4 early this morning may be in for a nice surprise tomorrow, as TUAW reader Cameron from The 9magnets Blog wrote in to let us know that his VZW iPhone has apparently already shipped. A screenshot of his order (and the corresponding American Express bill) shows that the device was shipped via FedEx overnight for delivery by 3 PM -- meaning he should have it in his hands by tomorrow afternoon.
Verizon's FAQ's states that "iPhone 4 orders will arrive on or before February 10, 2011," so I guess we'll see if that holds true. Many early AT&T iPhone 4 orders showed "shipped" status very quickly last year, but the phones were actually held for delivery until the official launch date. To Cameron and any other readers who placed their order already -- please be sure to let us know if your phone arrives sometime tomorrow. Переслать - Xcode 4 posted to developers, pulled, may hint at 10.7 beta release
Apple apparently posted the gold master of Xcode 4 this morning -- that's the final pre-release version before the final version is eventually offered up to the public. Unfortunately, just as soon as the new version of Xcode went up, it was pulled right back down again. Reports from developers who saw the release's Read Me say that it apparently listed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion as a requirement to run, and as you probably already know, that version of the OS isn't actually available yet. So one of two things is happening here: either there was a typo in the documentation, and Apple just meant that Xcode 4 requires 10.6, or Xcode 4 really does require a version of Lion, and a beta of that operating system will be available to developers soon.
At any rate, we do know Xcode 4 is officially on the way. Apple's Developer Tools evangelist says on Twitter that we can expect it out very soon. The new version will bring a single-window UI for developers of Mac and iOS apps and a bunch of other new features for them to play with. Stay tuned, devs -- there'll be new goodies on Apple's dev portal soon enough.Xcode 4 posted to developers, pulled, may hint at 10.7 beta release originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 15:05:00 EST. Переслать - New Australian Apple Store planned for November opening
According to a report from ifoAppleStore, another Apple store is slated to open outside Sydney, Australia. Construction crews are reportedly on site in Westfield Penrith (Penrith Plaza) for a store that will open in November 2011. The location within the mall is not yet known, but local chatter suggests it will occupy the space of two stores and will be apart from the larger, anchor stores.
This will be the fifth store Apple owns and operates in the greater Sydney region. Other locations include stores in Bondi, the Chatswood Chase Mall and on George Street in central Sydney, the first Apple store to open in Australia.
More than rumor, Apple is already seeking employees to fill positions within this new store. On Apple's Australia job board, the Penrith location appears in numerous future positions including those for store leaders, managers and Genius associates.

Переслать - Glympse is a great way to share your location
Somehow we missed telling you about Glympse, the great little free app that lets you tell others where you are in real time. To get started, download Glympse to your iPhone and accept the terms of use. There are no accounts to set up or anything else to fiddle with. When you're ready to share your location, enter an email address or search your contacts. Select a contact, email or text message number and set a duration you'd like the person to be able to see your location.
Seconds later, your recipient receives a link. If they are on a laptop or PC, they will see you on a Google Map -- it can be street or satellite view. Your icon will be moving in near real time, and your speed will be displayed. If you have selected a destination, it will show up on the map as well. It doesn't get easier than that.
If the other person has Glympse on their phone, they have the option to have the app's built-in map display your location. If you want to cut off a viewer before their allotted time is up, you can "expire" them. You can send your location to multiple people, which they can view simultaneously. I've used the app to let people know that I'll be late for a meeting or to display my position in traffic. You can also share your locations to Facebook or Twitter.

Переслать - App Review: Michael Schacht's Gold! is simply good
Michael Schacht's Gold! is the first card game we know of to be released simultaneously as an iDevice app and a physical product. The game is making its virgin appearance on the App Store as a US$2.99 universal app today and at the Nuremberg International Toy Fair, which starts today in Germany. This tiny bit of history doesn't make the game any better or worse than it would be otherwise, but it does show that some designers are willing to work with app developers to try and attract a digital audience before making sure their game is a hit on the tabletop.
Perhaps the reason for the dual debut is that this isn't the first time a Schacht design has hit the App Store. The video-gamey port of Zooloretto is well-done, and there's also an unlicensed clone of Schacht's game Coloretto called Chameleon out there. What is Gold! all about? Donkeys, stealing cards and trying to get the most gold. Keep reading to see what I mean.

Переслать - US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords loves her iPad
Here's an interesting example of a shared story from The Daily in which US Representative Gabrielle Giffords proclaims her love of the iPad, and explains how she uses it for work. The Daily's Elizabeth Saab interviewed Rep. Giffords shortly before she was shot in Arizona, and the main topic was the iPad.
"It takes me about six to eight hours every week just to get to work," Rep. Giffords said. "Being able to carry an iPad, particularly being able to have all of my documents in the cloud, and be able to access speeches and briefing materials has really made a big difference."
Calling herself "kind of a boring person," Rep. Giffords says that she doesn't have any games installed on her iPad, but notes that her office is among the top social networkers in Congress, and they manage all of that with an iPad.
Last month, we peeked at the desk of US House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who makes good use of his iMac and iPad. Congressman Cantor uses his iPad daily, his office told us, and he enjoys reading his hometown newspaper on the device. Recently, US Senate rules changed to allow Macs into Senate offices with official permission.

Переслать - Verizon Wireless wants to throttle you (actually your data usage)
In preparation for millions of iPhone 4 users who will soon be jumping onto the Verizon Wireless network, the company has announced that they will start throttling the data throughput of customers who consume an "extraordinary amount of data."
In a PDF memo on the Verizon Wireless website, the company stated that they may "reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle" to ensure the best performance for all users at crowded locations and times of peak demand. Verizon Wireless will only do this if you're in the top 5 percent of the company's data users. They want to make sure that the demands of the few don't ruin network performance for the many.
That's not all Verizon Wireless is doing in advance of the February 10 onslaught of iPhones on their network. The company also states that they're implementing "optimization and transcoding technologies" for data transmission to let available network capacity work for the largest number of users. They're doing this through sizing video "more appropriately" for devices, using less capacity and caching less data. Verizon Wireless doesn't believe that the process will degrade the quality of text, image and video files, but does make the disclaimer that the "process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device."
A detailed document describing the optimization techniques that Verizon Wireless is implementing can be found here.
