- What happens to the original iPad after iPad 2?
The iPad 2 just entered production, says the Wall Street Journal, and multiple sources (including common sense) point to its release sometime within the next couple months. That brings to mind a question: what will happen to the current iPad after the iPad 2 comes out? Will Apple discount and discontinue it, or will it keep the original iPad around as a "budget" model?
TUAW reader Dennis wrote in to us and speculated on the latter, saying that Apple might follow the route it's followed for the iPhone and iPod touch by offering a previous-generation model as an "entry-level" option. The iPad 2 would round out the iPad line, with new features like increased RAM, more powerful processors, and cameras reserved for the mid-range and "premium" iPad levels.
That idea got our whole team buzzing about the possibilities and the drawbacks of that approach. Our speculation (based on no insider knowledge whatsoever) follows on the next page.

Переслать - iPad run over by a PT Cruiser, lives to tell the tale
We see a lot of examples of how Apple products can withstand abuse, but one of the more dramatic examples showed up in the TUAW inbox this afternoon.
Reader Aaron sent us a link to a YouTube video (on the next page) demonstrating how an iPad belonging to a fellow employee handled being run over by the front and rear wheels of a Chrysler PT Cruiser. As the video shows, the iPad was in the standard Apple Case and the front glass was crushed quite extensively. However, the Home button still worked and the rest of the components in the display were totally functional. The touchscreen still responded to gestures, and the accelerometer responded by rotating the screen.
We don't recommend driving over your iPad to test the durability (duh!), but isn't it good to know that it can handle this kind of abuse and still work? Enjoy the video.

Переслать - Wüdskin is a Kickstarter-sponsored bamboo and aluminum iPad case
We've talked about Kickstarter here before -- it's a site that allows people to try and raise money for ideas or projects that they're working on. And there's an iPad-related project that's being funded right now. The Wüdskin is a protective iPad case made out of bamboo and aluminum that's a little bulky, but pretty striking anyway. It definitely looks sturdy. There's a hinge on it that also works as a stand, and the hinge is the same that's used in some laptop screens, so it's both durable and well-designed.
I like it -- I wouldn't necessarily use it around the house, but if I was bringing the iPad on a trip, I would definitely use it for protection. You have to contribute at least $150 to the Kickstarter project to pick up an actual case yourself, but if you do so, not only do you get the "discount" (no word on how much it will cost once it's finished), but you'll get a t-shirt, engraved bamboo plaque, and mentioned on the website as a supporter as well.
Unfortunately, the project has only raised about 1/10 of the $10,000 it's trying to put together by next month, so it may not get funded at all. But if you're interested in the Wüdskin, you can make a donation right now.

Переслать - Verizon iPhone causing fragmentation of iOS apps? We've got the real story
Sometimes, when journalists and bloggers hear something that sounds like a scoop, they rush to publish the story before anyone else can get it. Unfortunately, that sometimes has repercussions.
Yesterday, I was talking to ZDNet's James Kendrick at the TeleNav Waypoint event in Cupertino when he mentioned that he had just posted a story about fragmentation in the iOS market. The story suggested strongly that there were changes between the AT&T and Verizon iPhones that would require some developers to create individualized versions of their apps for each carrier. His conclusions were based on a question he had posed earlier in the day to TeleNav personnel, asking why the company had created a Verizon-only version of their iPhone navigation app instead of just re-branding the AT&T Navigator app. The answer from Telenav execs was that they believed it was due to hardware differences. I also overheard that comment and found it quite disturbing.
Shortly after Kendrick's post went live, TechCrunch's MG Siegler wrote a sharp-tongued but insightful response, iPhone App Fragmentation FUD Is Looming. In his post, Siegler decried Kendrick's story as "complete nonsense" based on his observation that all apps he had personally tested on the Verizon iPhone -- including a number of GPS-centric apps -- had worked fine. This seemed like a story that could be rapidly resolved one way or another with a bit of targeted reporting. Our beat writer for the navigation app market, Mel Martin, quickly jumped in (at 10 at night) and emailed numerous contacts in the mobile nav sector to see if they had run into any issues with their apps working on the Verizon iPhone. The unanimous answer? No.

Переслать - WSJ: iPad 2 in production; to be offered through Verizon and AT&T
In what shouldn't be too much of a shock for anyone, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the next generation iPad is now in production, which would concur nicely with the rumors that the iPad 2 will be released in the next four to six weeks. The WSJ report doesn't offer a whole lot of details, but they cite their sources as saying that the new iPad will be "thinner, lighter and will come with a faster processor, more memory and a more powerful graphics processor" and front-facing camera (no word on a rear-facing camera).
However the next iPad will not feature a higher resolution display. WSJ sources note that the new iPad's display will be "similar" to the current model.
The Wall Street Journal also noted that the new iPad will be available through Verizon and AT&T stores, which is no surprise since both now offer the iPhone. However, the new device will not be available through Sprint or T-Mobile. The next generation iPad is widely expected to be unveiled by the end of February with a March shipping date.WSJ: iPad 2 in production; to be offered through Verizon and AT&T originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 19:00:00 EST. Переслать - Apple Store may be coming to NYC's Grand Central Terminal
As if it wasn't busy enough already, Apple may be looking to build a retail store right in the middle of New York's Grand Central Terminal, according to reports. There hasn't been any public sign that the company wants to open a new store there yet (and there is a public process companies have to go through to submit proposals and gain approval), but "reliable sources" are apparently saying Apple wants to start the process.
It might sound like a strange idea to put an Apple Store in a train station, especially one that's fairly close to several existing Apple Stores. But the Fifth Ave. store is reportedly overcrowded already (even though it's Apple's only 24-hour location), and obviously Grand Central Terminal is prime real estate for well-heeled shoppers, considering all of the commuters that come through from Westchester, Connecticut and other suburbs every day. I doubt the space will be cheap, but Apple's got some of the deepest pockets around.
No word yet on how long it would take for an Apple Store to get approved and built, if indeed the rumors are true and Apple is trying to get in there at all. We'll stay tuned. If the store does come, it would join the five existing plus one hypothetical stores in the five boroughs of New York City, continuing the Big Apple's dominance as the densest urban concentration of Apple retail.

Переслать - Valentine's Day specials coming to the App Store
Ah, Valentine's Day, when Spring is just around the corner, love is in the air, and ... iOS games are on sale for 99 cents? Apparently -- since the holiday is largely made up by gift card retailers anyway, a bunch of big iOS developers are putting their games on sale for just a buck over the weekend. If you've been waiting to pick up games by Electronic Arts or Gameloft, this coming weekend will be your chance.
There are actually multiple reasons for this -- not only is it Valentine's Day, but a lot of folks are receiving their new Verizon iPhones this weekend, and so there's a lot of incentive to sell some games and break into the top paid and free app charts. We can probably expect to hear about more sales as the week goes on.
Some games are also updating for Valentine's Day -- both Angry Birds and Cut the Rope have updates planned or shipping already, and we'll probably see a few more of those as well. Flower Garden is also going free starting Thursday for the holiday. Just be careful -- if your Valentine catches you playing any of this new content during your date next Monday, the rest of February might be a little more lonely for you.Valentine's Day specials coming to the App Store originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Confession: A Roman Catholic App receives an imprimatur and your sins
I grew up Catholic and remember the nervousness of going to confession each week. Little iApps has created Confession: A Roman Catholic App that aims to remove some of the trepidation of those visits by logging your sins, tracking your prayers, offering a step-by-step guide to the sacrament and offer some religious guidance by way of an "examination of conscience." If you're worried about people seeing all the bad things you've been up to, there's also password-protection for your profiles. It happens to be the first iOS app to receive an imprimatur, which is essentially a blessing from the church to publish the app.
I spoke to one of the developers this afternoon and he informed me that Little iApps is donating a portion of the proceeds to various Catholic charities, so the $1.99 price is not just a way to get money from the devout iDevice users out there. I must admit it's an interesting approach to a centuries-old practice, and the interface is clean and simple (and tuned for iPhone or iPad, depending). It's designed to be used in and out of the confessional booth. If you are Catholic, it's likely worth a look. If you're Catholic and you sin frequently, well, just be sure you use that password.
[Due to the religious nature of this post we've turned off comments. Sorry, some folks can't be civil no matter how nicely we ask. - Ed.]

Переслать - Microsoft shuffling execs to better compete with Apple
Microsoft is reportedly shuffling around its upper brass to better compete against Apple and Google. The company is removing long-serving executives from their positions and promoting senior engineers from areas within the company that are struggling.
This move is in response to pressure from Microsoft's Board of Directors which is looking for the company to move away from the stagnant corporate culture of old and introduce new talent into its executive leadership.
The mobile phone division is one group that may benefit from these changes. Though Windows Phone was launched with much fanfare in October 2010, the mobile platform has failed to take off. Microsoft confirmed that it has sold two million licenses for its mobile OS, but this figure represents the number of handsets manufacturers intend to build, not the amount that have landed in the hands of consumers.Quarterly sales figures for the end of 2010 also show that Windows Phone is trailing Android, iOS, BlackBerry and even the aging Windows Mobile.

Переслать - The Daily for iPad updated with new feature: It crashes more frequently now
Editor's Note: One tip that may resolve the frequent crashes -- the App Store description for The Daily is now showing a note stating "Current Daily users: Please delete your current app before upgrading to 1.0.1." This is not the way that app updates are supposed to be done. C'mon, News Corp. You're doin' it wrong!
I've had a love/hate relationship with The Daily. It was a great idea for a low-priced subscription newspaper, but over time I lost interest in the type of stories offered and the app was downright unstable. Fellow TUAW blogger Dave Caolo experienced so many crashes and suffered through slow loading of content, and finally just gave up on the app.
A fix was posted last night that claimed to make it faster, more stable, and improved the "introduction experience," whatever that means. In my testing last night and today, I can say the app crashes more than Wile E. Coyote. In several instances, the app started up and left me staring at a blank screen. Sometimes the pages showed up. Sometimes they didn't. Sometimes articles had pictures, sometimes they didn't. Apparently the way to ensure it will at least work is to first delete the app while connected to iTunes, then download the updated version and re-install it. Not exactly the "Apple experience" for app updates, is it?

Переслать - iPad cutting board chopped down by Apple
Apple has pulled the plug on a cutting board designed to look like the iPad, according to the board's creator on his blog. Dean Kaplan had a lot of success with his iPhone and iPad stencils, and thought it would be clever to make a cutting board shaped like Apple's magical and revolutionary device. Unfortunately, Apple's lawyers came down on him a few months back, claiming that the wooden board's "likeness" to an certain electronic tablet was a problem. He thinks the whole thing's a little silly (and he's right -- no one's going to confuse a cutting board for an actual iPad), but he's not willing to test the waters with Apple's law sharks swimming around.
Apple has a history of shutting down products like this -- they also shut down the charming little eiPott, an iPod-shaped egg dish from Germany. There's probably more room for products like this than the creators allow Apple to claim, but then again, there's certainly a market for fake Apple devices. After the trouble they've had so far, Apple is probably being overly careful about just where its designs and "likenesses" are used.[Hat tip to @JessicaGottlieb for spotting this]

Переслать - Ambiance comes to the desktop
Ambiance from Urban Apps is an "environment enhancer" that supplies a variety of sounds and noises to help you sleep, set a mood, and so on. I've been using the iPhone app for years to help me catch some Z's, and now Urban Apps has released Ambiance for the desktop. It's got an iTunes-line interface with a store and support for playlists, mixes and more. Here's our first look at Ambiance for the Mac.Installation
Ambiance is an Adobe Air app. When I asked developer Matt Coneybeare why he chose Air instead of the Mac App Store for Ambiance, he said that the goal was to have Ambiance for desktop available to as many systems as possible at launch. If you've installed an Air app in the past, the process should be familiar to you. If not, download Air and then grab Ambiance. You'll be walked through the process. When you're through, launch the app and let's check it out.
Ambiance for the desktop starts you off with a 14-day free trial. After that, you'll pay US$9.99 for a license.Continue reading Ambiance comes to the desktop

Переслать - Google Translate native app available for iPhone, features speech-to-text and synthesized voices
Last month Google came out with some new synthesized voices for Google Translate, and now the Google Mobile Blog has announced the availability of an iOS version of Google Translate, complete with voice-to-text data entry and synthesized speech. There's support for 15 languages via voice entry, but you can listen to the translation of 23 languages via those synthesized voices. Tapping a zoom icon makes the translated text bigger, handy when you want to just point and ask "where is the bathroom?" in Greek (or dozens of other languages).
Of course, the web app has been around for a while, but you couldn't do the voice or speech actions. The dedicated app is free, and I've found Translate to be quite good at what it does.

Переслать - iControlPad, the physical controller for your iPhone, finally available for order
At long last, the iControlPad for iPhone is finally available for order and it's shipping next week! We've had our eye on this thing since May of 2008, when an early prototype looked much different than the final product.
The iControlPad is a slide-on gaming attachment that clamps into place when attached to an iPhone, adding all the nifty gaming controllers that the cool kids want, like a D-Pad, buttons, analog nubs and two rear buttons. It also features upgradable firmware so new features can be added and a battery that can charge your iPhone via USB while playing. As Engadget notes, not all games are supported, so keep that in mind.
The iControlPad will cost you US$74.99. Last August we saw that only 3,000 units will be built in the first run, so get your order in.iControlPad, the physical controller for your iPhone, finally available for order originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. Переслать - greenpois0n Verizon iPhone jailbreak adds Windows support
We announced the greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 over the weekend. At the time, the jailbreak tool only worked on Mac. It didn't take long for the Chronic Dev Team to update the tool to now support Windows. This means you can jailbreak your Verizon iPhone using either a Mac or Windows.
As always, make sure you know what you're getting into when you jailbreak your iPhone. You should definitely read the documentation included with greenpois0n before you alter the way your iPhone works. The instructions for executing the jailbreak are pretty straightforward and you shouldn't have much trouble, even if you're new to the jailbreak world.

Переслать - iPod Classic stock low, prompts refresh rumors
AppleBitch picked up a tip that the shipping times are getting pretty long for the iPod Classic and that many Apple retailers are simply out of stock. Since the iPod Classic hasn't been updated since fall 2009, we're now seeing speculation that the iPod Classic might be due for a refresh soon. Hardmac reported last month on a new line of hard drives that could indicate the iPod Classic's capacity might go up to 220 GB.
Reinforcing the news, AppleBitch points out that Amazon.com shipping times for the iPod Classic run 2 to 4 weeks. MacStories points out that Best Buy says the iPod Classic is backordered. We'll probably see other Apple sites pick up on these hints, and some solid speculation about when an about a new iPod Classic announcement will appear.

Переслать - iTunes controlled 65% of online movies sales in 2010
iTunes is the top seller of downloadable movies, controlling two thirds of the total market, according to IHS Screen Digest. This proud distinction is focused on the actual purchase of movies from iTunes, not streaming internet rentals such as those offered by Netflix. IHS is a market research firm that analyzes streaming video and the electronic sales of movies, which makes this kind of study their exact bailiwick.
The closest runner up to Apple's success was Microsoft, who only sold a quarter of the movies that Apple did. If you add up all the non-Apple online retail outlets for electronic movies, they make up a little more than 1/3rd of the available sales. Of course, selling movies online is a relatively new business and things could change in 2011. In the meantime, it seems if you want to sell a movie online, you really need to be on iTunes.

Переслать - Intel may ship dual-core Sandy Bridge CPUs on Feb 20
Intel confirmed on Monday that the dual-core version of its Sandy Bridge processor will begin to ship on February 20th. Early last week, Intel disclosed the existence of a flaw in the SATA chipset for its second-generation Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Over time, this flaw would degrade the performance of both internal DVD and hard drives.
Intel developed a fix for this hardware issue and began production of a new and improved chipset. Originally, Intel projected these updated chips would be available in mid-March, prompting speculation that this delay would alter the availability of Apple's 2011 MacBook Pro lineup.
With the possibility of a February availability date, computer manufacturers like Apple may not be affected by this flaw and their 2011 inventory may roll out as planned. This is good news for Apple customers hoping to score a brand new MacBook Pro. That rumored March 11th date is now looking a bit more promising.

Well, now that the Verizon iPhone is hitting the streets, the famous consumer advocacy and product testing group is weighing in on the newest variety of iPhone.
Although Consumer Reports hasn't yet had an opportunity to actually test the Verizon iPhone, The Street is reporting that Senior Editor Mike Gikas says "key technical differences" separate the phone from the AT&T model. Does this mean that Consumer Reports may give the Verizon iPhone a thumbs-up? We'll have to wait to see the results of their detailed testing.

Переслать - Dear Apple: Thank you for pulling out of Macworld Expo
It feels weird to be thanking Apple for something it hasn't done, instead of one of the things it actually has done that I am very pleased with. But here goes: thank you, Apple, for finally and officially blowing off Macworld Expo.
I attended two Macworld Expos with Apple, both in 2007 and 2008. I got to see the last two Stevenotes, attend a few of the talks and spend a lot of time on the show floor. Those were two big years as Macworld goes, with the iPhone and AppleTV at one and the first MacBook Air at the other. But really, it felt like the expo hall was dominated by Apple the entire time. And the Apple team wasn't really interacting with anyone there. Why should they, anyway? Everyone was there to see what Apple had, and anything else on the floor was just a bonus, right? That's certainly how it seemed. I think it was last year's Macworld wrap-up Talkcast where Mike Rose called it "Benevolent Neglect" of the community, and he nailed it. Apple always took for granted that if it released it, we would come. And we did.
And then Apple left. At the end of 2008 it was announced that the company's 2009 Macworld appearance would be its last (which didn't even include Steve, that was a Philnote). Oh noes! What will we do? How can anyone care about a Macworld if there's no appearance by the team behind the Mac?
Pretty easily, apparently.Continue reading Dear Apple: Thank you for pulling out of Macworld Expo

Переслать - Banana TV will let iOS devices stream video to the Mac
When it comes to making AirPlay sit up and do tricks, we're proud to have one of the best in the business right here at TUAW. Erica Sadun has released a full suite of in-progress Mac apps to work with Apple's video streaming protocol.
While AirPlay is intended to allow iOS devices or iTunes to stream media to the current-gen Apple TV or third-party receivers, Erica's AirFlick, AirPDF and Bruce utilities extend the AirPlay universe to allow you to show content, weather/RSS or arbitrary video files and images from your Mac to your Apple TV, all without diving into iTunes. AirFlick even cooperates with Air Video Server to transcode files and streams on the fly, meaning that otherwise-incompatible video formats like AVI or MKV play just fine.
Now she's given us a preview of an app that's hopefully coming very soon: Banana TV. This handy tool turns the AirPlay pathway back around, allowing you to play video or images from your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or higher directly onto your Mac. While you probably have most of the same content on your computer that you have on your iDevice, it's a great way to show videos on a bigger screen when visiting a friend or family member; it also opens up AirPlay streaming from iOS devices your friends or colleagues have with them, even if you don't have an Apple TV (at the office, for example).
No word on when Banana TV might be available or at what cost, but it's a sign of very interesting things to come from Erica's secret underground labs. Keep an eye out for more updates to the other AirPlay apps and more new features.

Переслать - iFixit: Verizon iPhone using dual-mode chip
A lot of the anticipation and/or naysaying about the Verizon iPhone has focused on CDMA, the somewhat less travel-friendly and slower network standard that Verizon uses. GSM covers a lot more countries, including all of Europe, and in the US the AT&T data speeds are testing noticeably faster -- of course, if you can't get or keep a signal, faster data does you precious little good.
Some iPhone watchers were hoping for a dual mode phone like the Droid Pro, which features an antenna chip (the Qualcomm MDM6600) capable of handling both kinds of networks. That chip, combined with an auxiliary SIM slot for device identification and a secondary antenna, could have allowed the Verizon iPhone to roam from continent to continent at will.
As we now know, the real-world Verizon iPhone is not a dual mode device; it's CDMA only, leaving us to hope that the next iPhone will be truly universal hardware for any and all carriers. There is a catch, though; today's thorough iFixit teardown revealed that the Verizon unit actually is using the MDM6600 chip, which would have theoretically allowed Apple to build out a GSM antenna in this version.
Lacking the SIM slot and the GSM antenna, however, the current Verizon iPhone is decidedly not dual-ready. iFixit mused that the extra effort and space required for a second antenna may have put such a device out of reach for this cycle; however, since Apple is already using the required universal chip, the signs point even more strongly to an iPhone 5 that bridges the gap.

Переслать - The Plaza Hotel providing iPads for all guests
The Plaza Hotel in New York City is now providing all guests with iPads both in their rooms and in The Palm Court dining room, according to a report from Luxist. Started in January 2011, the program gives guests complete access to guest services like room service along with the ability to control room functions, such as lighting and AC, using Intelity's ICE (Interactive Customer Experience) software.
In talking to Luxist, the hotel's general manager Shane Krige explained "[The Plaza] chose the iPad because it is a great piece of equipment that is here to stay and won't disappear tomorrow. It brings another five star element to the hotel."
We previously reported on the popularity of iPads being implemented in restaurants, with owners of one steakhouse even crediting the iPad with playing a role in increasing their wine sales. I myself recently dined in a restaurant that brought an iPad to the table at the end of the meal with a survey installed on it. With political campaigns promising iPads, corporations giving them out as bonuses and even universities providing iPads to students, it was only a matter of time before the hotel industry dipped its toes into the world of the iPad. The Plaza Hotel claims to be the first in the world offering this type of service; I wonder who will be next?
