- First Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad
Filed under: Accessories, iPad
I blame Steve Sande for my newest iPad-related purchase. Well, there's a lot of things to blame Steve for, but it was his reviews of the Tom Bihn Western Flyer and Checkpoint Flyer that had me checking out the company he bought the bags from last year.
Tom Bihn is based in Seattle and has the distinction of being among those rare companies that still makes its products in the U.S. using mostly U.S.-produced materials. Only a few components are sourced from overseas, but those parts are fully disclosed.
Tom Bihn was also had gear designed specifically iPad right off the bat, announcing its offerings -- The Ristretto and the Cache for iPad -- just hours after the original iPad announcement. The US$110 Ristretto, which also comes in a larger size designed to hold a MacBook, is a vertical messenger bag with a padded area that is large enough to hold a netbook or an iPad.
After having my iPad and accessories bounce around a larger bag for a few weeks, I caved and placed a Ristretto order to see if it suited my needs. I could have gone cheaper, I could have used a regular netbook case, but I'm glad I held out for the Ristretto.TUAWFirst Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 14:00:00 EST. IPad - MacBook - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Tom Bihn - SeattleПереслать - YouTube uploads from iPhone 4 are downsized
Filed under: iPhone
Yesterday when we posted that iMovie for iPhone 4 was available on the App Store, we mentioned an important limitation on the resolution of the videos you can share with the iPhone. An Apple support document specifies that while iMovie can export a full 720p HD video if you send the video via email or import it back to iPhoto, movies uploaded from YouTube, MMS or MobileMe Gallery will be downsized to a maximum resolution of 568x320.
Since then, users like Chris Pirillo have started using the app and have confirmed the restriction. Chris asked us if there are any iPhone-only workarounds that don't require transferring the video off to your Mac or PC. Unfortunately, it looks like the only way you will be able to share a full 720p HD version of iMovie videos is to transfer the file to your computer before uploading it to YouTube or any other sharing service from there.
Ironically, while a second support document mentions this limitation is in place to improve upload performance, you are still restricted to 568x320 even when you're connected to WiFi -- perhaps the very same WiFi connection you will now use to upload the video from your computer.
Chris also mentioned he and other users are reporting issues logging into YouTube with both YouTube and Google credentials on a number of iOS devices. We're not sure why this issue is happening, but a few people on the Mac Rumors forums are suggesting that you make sure your Google credentials are associated with your YouTube login. You may also want to verify that your email address is confirmed in the email options to possibly eliminate the problem.TUAWYouTube uploads from iPhone 4 are downsized originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. iPhone - YouTube - App Store - Google - AppleПереслать - Apple spotlights apps ready for iOS 4.0
Filed under: iPhone, App Store
We already spotlighted a few big apps that have made the jump to iOS 4 (and I'm sure we'll have more coming up soon), but Apple has gone ahead and put a few of its favorites on a page in iTunes for you to browse through as well. There are some excellent games on the list (PopCap didn't waste any time, and Ngmoco has a few, along with both Firemint titles). Art app Brushes and TUAW favorite Dropbox are there too, along with a bevy of other popular titles. This list definitely isn't definitive (iBooks is obviously ready for iOS 4, though it's not on there), but if you want to see what the Retina Display is like or check out multitasking on an app like Pandora, you can do so.
One interesting note on what's not on there: Apple hasn't yet updated its official Remote app, and Texas Hold 'Em hasn't been updated since it first came out back on September 1st, 2008. So even Apple isn't worrying about compatibility with all of its apps -- if you have a favorite app that's not updated often, you might be waiting a while to get full functionality with the new OS.

Apple touted iBooks 1.1 as a major upgrade which allows users to sync and view PDFs from their computer to the iPad. While Apple has delivered the ability to sync and view PDFs in iBooks 1.1, there are some major limitations, including some features that iBooks 1.1 is advertised as being able to do, but actually cannot. Filed under: iPhone, iPhone 101
FaceTime for the iPhone 4 is a lot of fun. It's the simplest implementation of video conferencing I've seen, because it is basically a no-configuration feature.
Here's some tips to would-be FaceTimers:
First, make sure FaceTime is enabled. Tap 'settings' on your new iPhone, scroll down to the green icon called 'Phone' and select it. The second item down is labeled FaceTime. Make sure it is turned on. It may take a moment for FaceTime to become active so make sure you get a confirmation.
Now when you call someone you'll see an on-screen FaceTime icon. You can tap it, and the other person, assuming they are on Wi-Fi and have an iPhone 4, will get an invitation. If he or she accepts you'll be chatting in just a few seconds.TUAWiPhone 101: What you need to know about FaceTime originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Apple has released the iPhone user guide for iOS 4 software. It's a 17MB, 244 page PDF designed to walk you through everything from syncing to using the default apps. The 28 chapters cover the Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod, Messages (SMS/MMS), Calendar, Photos, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings, the iTunes Store, Compass, Contacts, Nike + iPod, iBooks, and Accessibility ... whew.
The book includes tips specific to the iPhone 4, but it also includes tips for the 3GS and 3G. When a section of the manual is only applicable to a certain device, it is noted at the beginning of the section.
As usual, the iPhone iOS 4 user guide is well-done. If you've been using an iPhone for any length of time, you've probably figured out most of this stuff already. It's a good resource for new users, though. There is a whole section of Apple manuals for various devices including the iPod and iPad.

Obviously with such an sought after item as the newest iPhone, there's going to be a slew of sightings of famous people hoping to get their mitts on one as well. Like Conan O'Brien, for example.
Another celebrity sighting didn't go off as well as the CoCo one did. Jason Bateman stood in line with others at the Apple Store at the Grove in Los Angeles. After waving his hands about at Apple Store employees, screaming "Hello! Jason Bateman here!" he was escorted into the store, ahead of the multitude waiting in front of him. Alright, I made up that screaming and waving part -- the employees likely saw him and promptly kissed butt. Needless to say, the remaining crowd booed Bateman relentlessly as he emerged with the telltale white Apple shopping bag and a new iPhone 4.
If you were one of the folks standing/sitting/laying down in those long lines of your fellow bretheren, waiting to get your hands on a brand-spankin' new iPhone 4, would you accept an offer to be brought to the front of the line? What if it was made a public spectacle? And then you were booed because you were offered it for no apparent reason? The next time you're in Kuala Lumpur, check out the Petronas Towers. On the way home, don't miss the airport's ticket kiosks. You'll find that they're powered by iPads. Malaysia Airlines has stuffed iPads running their app MHmobile into 9 self-checkout kiosks. As you see in the video above, using the app is just as easy as you'd expect and a whole lot less ugly than some kiosk software I've seen.
I've never been an IT manager at an airport, but I'd imagine that setting one of these things up would cost less than other methods. Plus, updates are simple: just download a new version of the app.
Of course, you can get that re-create that airport excitement whenever you want by downloading the app yourself. Minus the overpriced food, crying babies and stale air, of course.

IPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Smartphones - HandheldsПереслать - Apple may have sold 1.5 million iPhone 4s already
Filed under: iPhone
This will come as no surprise to anyone who saw all of those lines yesterday: Analysts are saying that Apple probably sold over 1.5 million iPhones yesterday, with 600,000 preorders, 100,000 in-store sales, and 50,000 sales from other places like Best Buy, with the rest coming from overseas. If that number is true (it's still just an estimate at this point), then Apple soundly broke early sales of the iPhone 3GS, which took a whole weekend to break one million sales. Still, as I said, record numbers wouldn't be surprising at all, given the turnouts at Apple Stores.
Oppenheimer analyst Yar Reiner also says that about 76 percent of the buyers yesterday were actually upgrading their iPhones, with only about 21 percent switching to AT&T. Of the customers getting an iPhone for the first time, 41 percent were originally T-Mobile, with only 28 percent coming from Verizon (who is rumored to be getting its own iPhone soon).
No matter what the final numbers turn out to be, yesterday was a heck of a day for Apple -- anecdotally, it was the biggest launch many of us have ever seen. It's only a day after release, and already the iPhone 4 is a huge success.TUAWApple may have sold 1.5 million iPhone 4s already originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
When the iPad was first announced, Steve Jobs seemed very proud of the data plans his company had negotiated for the 3G model. The top-of-the-line plan featured unlimited data for for US$30 per month. A few weeks later, on June 2nd, that plan was replaced with 2GB of data for $25 per month.
Customers were not happy.
Today, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple and AT&T, claiming fraud and misrepresentation. Specifically, the plaintiffs in the nationwide suit alllege that both Apple and AT&T "deceptively promoted" that they could switch, month by month, between the unlimited plan and the 250MB plan. Now customers who opt for the unlimited plan cannot switch back to a limited plan.
The whole thing smells like the old bait-and-switch, enjoyed by plaid-wearing used car salesmen everywhere. Good luck to all involved.

Apple - Steve Jobs - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AT&T - IPadПереслать - Open source BitTorrent application Transmission updated to 2.0
Filed under: Open Source
Transmission, the lightweight, open source, and free BitTorrent client we've written about in the past, recently released version 2.0. Transmission was already one of the leanest BitTorrent clients on OS X, and the new version makes it even faster, with improvements to startup time, local data handling, and optimization of how you connect to peers and download requests. Transmission 2.0 will also search for and discover peers on your local network to connect with for even faster speeds.
While Transmission is a cross-platform, open source application, the developers continue to focus on making it feel like a native OS X app, and Transmission feels right at home with all of the other Mac-only applications I use every day. Mac users can now paste trackers into the Create window, magnet links will open the Add Transfer window, and the Compact View replaces the Minimal View to use less screen real estate.
Thanks to both its lightweight nature and its adherence to OS X design conventions, Transmission is one of the easiest torrent clients I've used. It accomplishes this ease-of-use without sacrificing the power features like scheduled bandwidth limiting, a Web interface for remotely controlling torrent activity, and port configuration; all of these features can be found in the well-organized Preferences.TUAWOpen source BitTorrent application Transmission updated to 2.0 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 10:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
I was one of those who had a new iPhone 4 magically appear yesterday, so I've had over 24 hours with mine to touch it and love it and name it George. Here are my first impressions:
New screen: The slightly slimmer case is nice. I really thought I'd dislike the square edges, but they aren't bothering me at all. I promise, nobody is more surprised than I am. It's slick. I know people say that as a colorful expression, but I mean the textbook definition of slick. If I'm using my laptop and sitting on the couch, I generally connect my phone and set it on the arm of the couch. I won't be doing that anymore! All it did last night was slide off into my lap.
New camera: I came from a 3G, so I just got the (official) ability to shoot video on my phone, not to mention the zoom and focus options. Getting the light will probably turn out to be awesome as well, but suddenly the sun decided to make an appearance in Oregon, so I haven't had a chance to really try it out.
(Did I mention the screen? I hope so. It's a beaut!)

Ok, so we're kind of cheating with this one; you probably already know about Twitterrific, if you don't actually have it installed on your iPhone. But we're using our daily app spotlight today to point out that the folks at Iconfactory have released version 3.0 of the popular Twitter client. Along with making the app universal (which means it now works on both iPhone and iPad), they've updated the interface and code for iOS 4. That means that it's not only purdier, but it's faster and works with in-app switching as well. Twitterrific is a free app, with a US$4.99 in-app purchase to remove the ads and manage more Twitter accounts.
That's not enough? Alright, we'll throw in a few more upgrades. Smule's popular I Am T-Pain app has also upgraded for iOS 4, making it not only ready for the Retina Display but also adding the ability to share auto-tuned videos on a few popular social networks. That one's on sale for only 99 cents right now, too.
Finally, ngmoco has released Eliminate: GunRange, an iOS 4-specific app that makes use of both the gyroscope and the premium Retina Display in the new iPhone. It's just 99 cents, too. While it's just a shooting gallery, it'll be a nice demonstration of the new hardware's capabilities if you're into the firearm range thing. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - TwitterПереслать - The science behind the iPhone 4's antennas
Filed under: iPhone
The iPhone 4's outer ring of antennas has been earning some grief lately as some owners have found that reception can change even based on where your hand is placed. Even Steve has weighed in on this issue via his itchy email finger.
Spencer Webb of AntennaSys (an "antenna design" firm) knows the science, though, and he's shared a little outsider wisdom on how the iPhone's metal actually works.
Where does the iPhone 4 fit in all of this? Webb says the antennas in the new iPhone are on the sides of the phone, which means that, yes, there's potential for your hands to block energy. But there's always the potential for that, and Webb says that if you put your phone somewhere away from you and use a Bluetooth headset, none of it really matters anyway.
What's the final verdict? Webb himself preordered an iPhone 4 to replace his original iPhone. Sure, the antennas might not be perfect, but given the quality of the phone (not to mention the experience), "good enough, is good enough."TUAWThe science behind the iPhone 4's antennas originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 01:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - iPhone 4 - Antenna - Mobile phoneПереслать - Apple patents another haptic feedback solution
Filed under: Apple
AppleInsider reports that Apple is still bouncing around ideas for a screen that allows for haptic feedback on its iOS devices. A new patent filed this week outlines a system of screens on a device designed to not only detect touch and protect the underlying technology but also provide physical feedback in various areas of the screen.
We've talked about this before, and Apple's been working on it for a while; as nice as the iPhone and iPad's screens are, there are some functions (like typing on a keyboard or hitting buttons in games) that call for a little more physical feedback. The patent also mentions things like giving users notice when they've reached a limit (as in scrolling or panning across pictures) or providing clicks on a scroll wheel.
Unfortunately, this is all still in the prototype stages. For whatever reason (I can guess a few, from power requirements to manufacturing costs), Apple still hasn't included any of this technology in a production device. But they're obviously very interested in providing haptic feedback, so hopefully, it won't be too long before we see an idea like this come to fruition.TUAWApple patents another haptic feedback solution originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 00:00:00 EST. In the past, I've been able to scoot in and out of the mall, or have the unit delivered to my home. Today is the first time that I actually spent multiple hours in line. Filed under: iPhone
With so much to do -- counting profits, making FaceTime prank calls to Woz, rubbing hands together and laughing manically -- it's hard to believe that El Steve is taking time out of his very busy day to answer his mail. Yet answer it he does, if our two most recent tipsters are on the level. Both are telling a very similar story about Steve's answers regarding the iPhone 4's gripping signal issues.
It seems Steve is happy to suggest the Mel Brooks approach to resolving the signal issue -- if we hold the phone that way, we won't need any signal boost. Tipster Rory Sinclair recounts today's email thread with the Apple CEO on his blog:
So, um, just got my iPhone 4. It's lovely and all, but this 'bridge the two antennae to kill your reception' thing seems to be a bit serious. If I bridge them with my hand or with a piece of metal the bars slowly drop to 'Searching...' and then 'No Service'.
It's kind of a worry. Is it possible this is a design flaw?
Regards - Rory Sinclair
Steve's reply:
Nope. Just don't hold it that way.
Rory pressed the issue once more, got the same response, and pressed it again, saying "Normally there aren't limits to how you hold a phone" -- finally getting this response from Steve:
Sure there are -- every phone has these areas of sensitivity, depending on the location of the antenna. Some phones even ship with labels warning customers to not cover certain areas with their hands.
Oooookay. You might think this was a non-answer answer, but it's the same one (or nearly) that reader Craig Brockman got from his email to Steve:
Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
Craig's correspondence was even confirmed by MacRumors, which was granted access to his email account and validated the message headers.
That phrasing starts to sound like Steve has turned to the marketing department for some boilerplate copy, since he may end up answering a lot of these emails over the next few weeks. In fact, Engadget and The Loop say that this particular verbiage is the company's official statement on the problem, and both sites hypothesize that the Bumper cases may alleviate the issue.
If you've got signal issues on your iPhone with your normal grip, be sure to let Apple know -- then come back here and let us know, too.TUAWDouble Stevemails on iPhone 4 reception: "Just don't hold it that way" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. The day has finally come. After 2 1/2 hours in the reserved line, I was able to walk out with the iPhone 4 up and running, albeit without contacts, music, videos or my app collection.
Getting it home and synced was uneventful. iTunes detected the new phone and dutifully restored everything. A couple of reminders, however: First, some passwords won't survive the sync. I had to sign on to Pandora again, enter my email passwords once more, and tell my Navigon app that I did indeed purchase traffic and panorama view maps. Tapping their icons re-loaded them, but the panorama maps don't display properly just yet, while the regular 2D and 3D maps work just fine. Hopefully this will be part of a Navigon update that includes multitasking. Oh, and your Bluetooth devices will have to be re-paired as well.
Speed increases are pretty obvious and very welcome. Just in case you missed it yesterday, Counter-Strike is now available ... wait for it ... for the Mac. Yes, possibly the most premiere PC game of all time is now playable (specifically the Source version) natively on the Mac, thanks to Valve's own Steam distribution service. And it's another Steam Play title, which means that if you own it on the PC (which you probably do if you've ever played FPS games in your life), you can download and play it right now on the Mac as well. You can even play cross-platform, so your buddies on the PC can finally let you into their clan -- assuming you're leet enough.
Just in case you don't own it, the game is also on sale right now for under $7. I tweeted on our @TUAW account last night that this might be the last big title in the Source library for the Mac (along with Half-Life and Team Fortress 2), but many of our followers correctly pointed out that we haven't seen Left 4 Dead or its sequel released on our platform yet, so stay tuned for that. A few of you also complained that Day of Defeat hadn't been brought over to the Mac yet, and that's true as well, though I wouldn't quite consider that as "canon" as the other games. Team Fortress 2 - Steam - Counter-Strike - Left 4 Dead - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - TUAW tested: iPhone 4 works with original iPhone dock
Filed under: Accessories
Editor's Note: We inadvertently neglected to acknowledge the other tipsters who brought this feature to our attention. Thank you to Alan Wyman, 'iPhone Coder,' DocRock & everyone else who pointed this out.
Over on Twitter, user TheiJcaP tipped us to the fact that the new iPhone 4 does work with the original iPhone dock. BeingfanaticalOCDmaniacsmoderately well organized, one and all, we headed off to our carefully labeled "outdated iPhone parts" box and pulled out some spare docks for units that are no longer serviceble.
Just as promised, the iPhone 4 fit perfectly into the dock, and even now my new unit is continuing its initial sync (yes, I do have a lot of data to transfer) in a happily near-vertical position.
This is just one of those tiny little bits of synchronicity that bring joy in life. It's not going to clean up oil spills or end disease and suffering, but what a lovely discovery and a pleasant surprise in our more immediate day-to-day world.TUAWTUAW tested: iPhone 4 works with original iPhone dock originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Twitter - Handhelds - SmartphonesПереслать - Fixing iPhone portrait videos with iMovie
Filed under: Video, Tips and tricks
The iPhone 3GS was the first model to let users shoot video, and the iPhone 4 will even shoot in HD (720p). It's so convenient and easy that most people whip them out to shoot a few seconds of the ball game, a fun day at the park or what have you. In the thrill of an artistic moment, you might not always consider how the iPhone is held, and you realize later you shot the whole thing in portrait orientation, at odds with most of the video-playing world. Oops.
You can pop your clip into iMovie and it can widen to fill the screen's aspect, making your subject look like Shrek. Fortunately the fix is easy, and there are two methods.
The first involves iMovie '09. Once your movie is assembled, it's time to export. From the Export menu, select Export Movie. A new sheet appears. Select HD (1280x720). Yes, you'll get the black 'pillarbox' bands on either side of your movie, but it's better than than the disfigured heads.
The second method requires QuickTime Pro (QTP), though it's basically the same process. Open your video with QTP and again, export as HD.
Shooting in landscape orientation generally requires less steps to get a no-fuss video, but you're not in deep trouble if you shoot in portrait either.TUAWFixing iPhone portrait videos with iMovie originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. Earlier today we caught up with Map My Run's CEO Robin Thurston at the Cherry Creek Apple Store while waiting to buy an iPhone 4. He was gracious enough to chat with us for a few minutes about his company, his apps and the company's plans for iOS 4.
Map My Run lets users track their workouts. It uses the iPhone's GPS functions to trace your route and monitor your progress towards your fitness goals. A cool new feature lets you broadcast your runs to your friends while you're running. Neat!

The word is BIG. Big lines, probably 4 times what they were last year for the 3GS roll-out. I got to the Apple La Encantada store in Tucson at 6AM to find hundreds of people in both the reserved line and those hopefuls waiting without a reservation for an iPhone 4.
The crowd was calm, but anxious. As I talked to people waiting, I was surprised by how many people were not current iPhone users. There were many BlackBerry owners, and a sprinkling of Motorola and Verizon labeled phones. Some said their contracts had just expired, and it was time to get on the iPhone bandwagon.

iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Motorola - IPadПереслать - Chillingo shows off its current crop at E3 2010
I met up with Chillingo at last week's E3 event here in Los Angeles, and got to see a few of their upcoming titles in action. Here's a few games they were showing off, and some early impressions of each.
Zombie Escape
This was probably my favorite game of the show -- it's a line-drawing game where you're tasked with drawing routes for survivors of a zombie apocalypse to rescue choppers. As they appear on sides of the touchscreen, it's your job to draw a path through the walking undead, and as the 28 days in the game go by, the difficulty ramps up with more undead and more survivors. Additionally, there are powerups and other items to collect, which give the game some tower defense-style elements, enabling you to defeat the undead from offscreen. But sending your survivors to get the powerups means they'll have to take separate routes and risk more danger.
Zombie Escape was about three weeks out from release when I saw it last week, so it should be on the App Store by the end of this month. It's definitely worth a look, especially if you're a fan of the line-drawing genre.TUAWChillingo shows off its current crop at E3 2010 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST. IPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Los Angeles - AppleПереслать - FaceTime is a tiny bit awkward, but a whole lot of fun
Filed under: iPhone
I wound up taking two FaceTime calls today, but a third failed. First up was our old friend Nik Fletcher from way across the ocean in the UK. I was shocked at the excellent quality of the call and the video. It was definitely nicer than a standard webcam.
To be clear, I'm not a huge fan of this concept. By that I mean that I still see social hurdles to this technology being widely adapted. If you've ever made faces while talking to someone on the phone, you'll know what I mean. Plus, having to hold the phone out in the air was a little tiring, but I'm sure the accessory market will create scads of "solutions" to this problem.
Drew Olanoff and I chatted next, and I did seem to notice a slight lag in the call. I noticed my Wi-Fi dip a bit as I moved about, but honestly I don't know what caused that. Still, the conversation flowed and was mostly natural, as though we really were face-to-face. My brother and I tried to connect, but he was supposedly logged in to a secure network and couldn't engage the FaceTime button, nor could he take my request. [Commenters suggest he may not have enabled FaceTime on his phone.]
As you can see from the pics, FaceTime is a clean and simple interface. There's a button to change cameras (now also in the Camera app), allowing you to give a virtual tour, or a peek at someone's crotch. (Thanks, Drew.) There's also a mute button for the speaker on your end. To begin a FaceTime call, you just click on the button that says "FaceTime" and wait for the other person to accept the request. Like Skype, you have to accept the request to video chat. Oh, and don't forget this is Wi-Fi-only for now, but we're told that will probably change someday. The future is ... soon!TUAWFaceTime is a tiny bit awkward, but a whole lot of fun originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 14:11:00 EST. Apple - Skype - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Nik FletcherПереслать - Adobe Audition for Mac confirmed
Filed under: Software
Your choices for premium audio editing on the Mac are soon to gain a most welcome addition. Adobe has announced that its all-things-audio editing software, Adobe Audition, will soon be making its way to the Mac platform.
While the company hasn't yet announced an official release date for the product, there will be a public beta made available. Apparently Adobe wants to get some feedback from the end-user community before putting the spit and polish on the released product. Those interested in participating in the public beta can do so by signing up at Adobe Labs. You'll be notified when the beta is available, which is said to be sometime this winter.
Not that this will be a concern to many, but in order to use many of the many of the DSP algorithms and processes present in Audition, you'll need a 64-bit processor.

Just yesterday, we reported that many tipsters were coming to us with proof that the Retina displays on their new iPhone 4s were exhibiting strange, discolored "blotching" issues. Since then, many more people have come forward, noticing the same issue on their own phones.
According to an AppleInsider forum post that claims to be from a person closely connected to the company that sold Apple and/or Foxconn the glass bonding adhesive for the iPhone, this is to be expected. Well, it's to be expected for a device shipped very quickly from the factory, where the bonding material (known as Organofunctional Silane Z-6011) hasn't had time to dry.
Apparently, all you need to do is wait a few more days & use the screen normally to allow the adhesive to dry, and your iPhone should be cured from its case of the measles ... or whatever the heck you want to call it.

iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleInsider - SmartphoneПереслать - Topping the App Store charts with Angry Birds
Filed under: iPhone, App Store
Angry Birds is one of the growing number of phenomenal success stories coming out of the App Store. It's a simple game; you drag birds in a slingshot in order to try and get them to knock down structures and hit green pigs. It's really resonated with audiences, though, and just like we heard with Doodle Jump, a string of constant free updates has propelled it to the top of the charts.
I got to talk to Mikael and Niklas Hed, cousins and chief officers at Rovio Mobile (the company behind Angry Birds), last week at E3 about their game and its success so far. They told me that the game has had four million downloads to date across, both, its paid and lite versions, and they said that they'll keep updating it "as long as the underlying market keeps growing." I asked them why they have chosen this model of just supporting the game with free updates, and they pointed to Valve's Team Fortress 2 as an example; they're updating the game just because they're "focused on bringing great value" to their customers.
Future updates to the game will include new birds to play around with and a little bit of multiplayer functionality, which is coming in a "huge update" very soon. I also asked about the iPad version (which has gotten some bad reviews, since it's basically the same as the iPhone version), and they said that it was just a matter of resources, but they did want to update that version of the app in the future.TUAWTopping the App Store charts with Angry Birds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. Filed under: Steve Jobs, Apple
(Russian press pool)Russian president Demetri Medvedev has been touring Silicon Valley this week, and during a trip to the mothership in Cupertino, he became the first Russian to officially get an iPhone 4 -- from Steve Jobs himself, no less. The iPhone 4 isn't even officially on sale in Russia yet; operator Beeline says the earliest it'll start selling is September of this year. But Jobs gave one to Medvedev anyway. Maybe he can jailbreak it to get it working.
Here's the real question: What did Medvedev himself buy in the Apple gift shop? A nice black "Hello I'm a Mac" shirt, or maybe a new Magic Mouse? You have to buy something whenever you stop in there.

Steve Jobs - Apple - Russia - Silicon Valley - IPhoneПереслать - My magical AT&T experience
Filed under: iPhone
We give AT&T a lot of crap for having lousy coverage*, being unable to comprehend where geeks gather** or just plain dropping the ball on big pre-order days, but I have to say that today I was very impressed by the customer service I received when I called to update my service contract. In fact, AT&T was proactive about sending me warnings on my bill. You see, I've been overpaying AT&T these past few months...
"I'll use 3rd-party texting and Skype minutes and it'll be no sweat," I thought to myself as I played with the newfangled compass on my phone. Sadly, this plan was dashed when I started the travel season. Between Macworld, SXSW and WWDC I wound up with hundreds of minutes and texts in overages. My bills were over $200 each month. The dude did not abide by this plan.
Today at the Apple Store the AT&T reps on duty claimed I couldn't change my rates, and hastily handed me a sheet that had something to do with my SIM card. So the Apple rep took me to activate my phone, and there I was able to upgrade my text and bring in my grandfathered unlimited data plan, but couldn't adjust the calling minutes.
On the way to my brother's house I called the AT&T customer service number (that's 611 on your iPhone) and within 15 minutes they not only upgraded me to unlimited going forward, but they adjusted my previous overages into a less painful range. Kudos to AT&T! They even allowed us to upgrade ahead of the normal schedule, which I greatly appreciate.
* Coverage is getting better. I noticed a marked improvement in San Francisco over just this past January.
** AT&T dropped the ball in 2009, but learned from that mistake and picked up the ball in 2010. As I said, things are improving.TUAWMy magical AT&T experience originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Two things are for certain: the iPhone 4 will be a huge success and there will be plenty of places that look to cash in by writing link bait headlines.

Well, that's what it's called on their front page where it is prominently linked. When you click through it's actually titled: "5 Big Blemishes for the Apple iPhone 4" so you can see they're ramping up the hyperbole machine.
The article doesn't say that you shouldn't buy one, it says "[t]here are, however, a few shortcomings." Really, Sherlock? Here's a clue for you: every device has a few shortcomings, but let's see what shortcomings Scott found.

IPhone - Google - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - SmartphoneПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Mailboxes for iPad
Filed under: iPad
Mailboxes is a new app from Lilliput Labs that fills one simple need. While there are lots of ways to read email and specifically Gmail on your iPad already, nearly all of them are open to anyone using your device. If there are a lot of members in your household, or if you have roommates or co-workers who also use your iPad, you might not want them having access to your email all the time.
Thus, Mailboxes is a multi-user Gmail client for the iPad -- you can register it with your Gmail account (or multiple accounts), and then each account can be given a PIN, which will automatically lock you out when the iPad goes to sleep or the app is turned off. Unfortunately, the app's actual mail reader is the Gmail web interface (so no offline reading), but if you wanted to read your mail in Safari, you'd have to be online anyway.
At the very least, for US$2.99, it'll give you the security of knowing that you won't accidentally leave a Safari window open, or have someone go snooping around in your Mail app. Not everyone will need an app like this, but if it fits your situation, it could be a lifesaver.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Mailboxes for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 11:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Customers are lined up across the country and sending reports and photos to our @ask_tuaw Twitter stream. Here are a few of the more interesting tidbits we've received.
Standing in line
As we predicted, the iPhone 4 lines are typically much longer than the iPad lineups were. The Garden State Plaza Apple Store in Paramus, New Jersey closed the non-reservation line (What Chris Breen is calling the "Pray for a Miracle Line") around 9:20 AM. The Biltmore Apple Store's line in balmy Phoenix, Arizona had wrapped around the store by 6:30 AM local time.
Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, the reservation line was longer than non-res. Twice as long, in fact.
Keeping them happy
Several readers are reporting that Apple Store employees are providing food and drinks to patient customers. In Reno, Nevada, workers are distributing coffee and donuts. Apple Store Crossgates in Albany, NY is also providing breakfast.
Photos
We're getting a lot of snapshots from Twitter. In Lancaster, PA, you can't even see the store from the back of the line. The same is true in Louisville, Kentucky, New York's Soho, and Austin, Texas. Finally, I must give a shout-out to my fellow New Englanders in Salem, New Hampshire.

The video speaks for itself. I held the iPhone 4 in my left hand, and when my skin comes into contact with the antenna, I lost two bars in a few seconds. My hand didn't change position, but I lifted up my hand to remove contact and those bars returned. I haven't tried this in a way that would confirm whether calls could be dropped, but Engadget is reporting it can happen.

I'm in line right now at the Santa Monica Apple Store for the iPhone 4 launch, and, just like in the rest of the country, the line is just plain huge. I was here for the iPad launch, and it's probably three times the size that line took up when it was at its longest. Of course, there are tents and camping chairs in the middle of this line, and that one was mostly people just standing around, but there's no question this is a much bigger line.
Apple Store employees haven't shown up outside yet (the store opens in about an hour from now), but the mood is genial -- even about 500 people back in line, where I am to try and get my Retina Display-enabled handset, people are expecting to pick up phones. But we'll see -- I assume if they don't have enough, they'll come out and tell us before too long.
One other thing: halfway down the line, there's a sign up that says "Spot for $ale." I can't imagine that anyone would take that offer quite yet, but I guess we'll see what happens if it turns out supplies are limited.

It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: You gotta love Woz.
Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak is well known for making himself extremely accessible to his fans and admirers. We're sure he can get his hands on any gizmo he wants. Despite this, he waits in lines and hangs out with fellow Apple fans.
When the iPad launched, Steve lined up for his tablet and in the process got to know Parth Dhebar, creator of Simple Reviews. Parth is a high school student and when he needed a ride to the iPhone 4 line, Woz picked him up. The pair joined the rest of the customers who were camping out, where Woz signed autographs, talked with fans and drove his Segway around the empty mall (does he go anywhere without that thing?).
