- iPhone 4 may natively support Facebook video uploads
Maybe this is the kind thing that would make Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg like his iPhone a little more.
The folks over at 9to5Mac.com dug into the iOS 4 SDK, and found some XML code that seems to indicate that video uploads to Facebook will be integrated with the new OS on the iPhone 4. Most likely they'll show up as an option for submitting your recorded videos direct from the native iOS video app.
While this is a little bit of an brow-raiser, it's not completely surprising. When you consider the reported Facebook integration coming for calendars and contacts, among other things, it's a natural progression
It's a bit odd, however, to have this capability native to iOS, when the official Facebook iPhone app already supports video uploads. I'm just wondering when Facebook's remaining iOS developers are going to get around to an iPad native Facebook app; I mean, how hard can it be?

IPhone - Facebook - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Facebook iPhoneПереслать - iPhone 4 sold out from AT&T, UK Apple Store
Filed under: iPhone
Update: The post has been edited to clarify that it's AT&T that's blown through its preorder allocation, not the entire universe of iPhone-selling outlets.
The white model never appeared, AT&T's backend systems folded like Superman on laundry day and even new data limits (to be fair you can get your old unlimited data grandfathered in) and higher ETF fees couldn't keep the customers away. Yes, the mighty iPhone 4 (and Apple's marketing) have won the day and are, at this moment, currently sold out at AT&T's stores for launch day delivery (you can still preorder from Apple, however). In AT&T's words (via Engadget and Boy Genius Report):
"Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We'll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24."
Update 2: The UK Apple Store is also showing first-day allocations are all gone; the website shows July 2 as the next delivery date for new pre-orders.

Analyst group IDC has been monitoring the mobile market in Australia, as they're wont to do, and projected this week that the iPhone is poised to overtake leader Nokia.
What's more, the gap is closing quickly. From the first calendar quarter of 2009 to the same time in 2010, the iPhone's Australian marketshare rose from 10.2% to 40.3%. Needless to say, IDC analyst Mark Novosel is impressed. "Apple has soared over the past 12 months, with market share quadrupling," he told The Australian. "We are forecasting that at current growth rates, Apple could be number one in the Australian smartphone market by the end of 2010."
The most impressive number for us is the change in units shipped. For example, leader Nokia held 66.6% of the marketshare in Q1 of '09, and 45.2% in Q2 for a 7% change in units shipped. Meanwhile, Apple held 10.2% in Q1 '09 and 40.3% in Q1, '10 for a 532.1% change in units shipped.

Filed under: OS, Software Update, Snow Leopard
Head on over to Software Update to find the latest OS X dot release.10.6.4 is now available -- and in addition to the usual split between delta and combo updates, and regular/server versions, there's another wrinkle here: the Mac mini released today gets its very own flavor of the 10.6.4 update, presumably because of late changes that couldn't be tracked back into the trunk version of the OS.
The size of the update may vary if you pick it up via Software Update -- we saw 315 MB on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.3. The combo update for all 10.6 systems weighs in at a bandwidth-hogging 887.4 MB.
Here's Apple's write-up on the matter:
- resolve an issue that causes the keyboard or trackpad to become unresponsive
- resolve an issue that may prevent some Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications from opening
- address issues copying, renaming, or deleting files on SMB file servers
- improve reliability of VPN connections
- resolve a playback issue in DVD Player when using Good Quality deinterlacing
- resolve an issue editing photos with iPhoto or Aperture in full screen view
- improve compatibility with some braille displays

Apple - MobileMe - Google - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iTunesПереслать - Google Earth comes to the iPad
Filed under: iPad
Google has released version 3.0 of Google Earth for iOS which brings full iPad support. The iPad version sports an update UI that makes it easy to switch between layers and select from your My Maps that you have saved under your Google account. Version 3.0 also adds full-resolution imagery for the iPad and a much-needed roads layer.
The iPad's large screen gives Google Earth a distinct advantage over using the app on the iPhone. Navigation and tilt are much easier to use and the app is much snappier overall. The large screen touch capabilities also makes it feel like you are holding a fully-interactive globe in your hands. The only feature I wish they would add is a "North-lock." It would be great if you could spin the Earth at a specific orientation without it rotating all over the place.

Google Earth - Google - iPhone - App Store - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - WWDC 2010: Hands-on with Chopper 2
Filed under: iPad
Chopper's been in the App Store since day one, and David Frampton of Majic Jungle Software is the guy who put it there. Since then it's garnered over a million downloads, he's made a number of other App Store titles (and brought the game to the Mac), and he's hard at work on the game's sequel. We've actually posted it here on TUAW before (more on that implementation in just a bit). but I got to go hands on with the game on the iPad at WWDC.
As a game, it plays about the same as the first one -- you control a chopper across 36 missions in 12 different locations, doing things like blowing up enemies, rescuing hostages, and so on. But the intriguing part of the game is the control scheme -- while it uses the same tilt-to-fly method as the first one, the fire button isn't on screen any more. Instead, you just touch anywhere to fire, and then adjust your finger on the screen to aim. It's amazingly intuitive -- the lack of a UI solves the problem of graphics getting in the way, and Frampton's figured out a great balance of skill-based aiming and touch-anywhere-to-fire.TUAWWWDC 2010: Hands-on with Chopper 2 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST. Much has been written about writing on the iPad. Those tapping out more than a few lines often opt for a Bluetooth keyboard. But the cool kids get one of these:
The USB Typewriter.
You can star in your own personal film noir fantasy with this USB-powered input device that works with any USB-capable computer, including the iPad. When mounted in back and connected, the iPad rides the carriage* from right to left as you type. It even registers a carriage return automatically and places the cursor beneath the previous line.
The best part is that there are several models to choose from, ranging in price from US$400-500. DIY types can order a $200 kit to convert their own typewriter. We love it.
*Youngn's: The "carriage" is where the "paper" used to go and get struck by the "ink ribbon." Ask an old person. He'll tell you all about it.

I've seen GameSalad around before (they had a big booth at this year's MacWorld, and we've mentioned them here on TUAW a few times), but I've never actually spoken to anyone who works for the Austin, TX based company. Fortunately, senior platform director Michael Herring found some time to come say hi at WWDC this week, and he spoke with me about the development system that hopes to bring iPhone and iPad app creation to everyone.
He did walk me through the app quickly, but since it's a free download over on their website, you can go see it for yourself if you want. The idea is that you set up a series of "actors," and then you add a set of rules for those actors (what happens when they touch or get directions from the keyboard, etc.) that will eventually make up a full game. GameSalad doesn't actually require any coding knowledge, but Herring told me that it did require a little bit of know-how in terms of how games work. You can easily make a game system with the app (and even veteran developers often use it for quick prototyping), but to actually make a working game that people will want to play, you'll have to bring your own trial-and-error patience and balancing effort.TUAWWWDC 2010: GameSalad brings game creation to everyone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. Among the iPad's superpowers is inspiring its owners to new heights of creativity. So far it has delighted a 100-year-old user, been wrapped in chocolate and spawned all sorts of DIY cases and stands. The latest effort we've seen is this G4 iMac-mounted beauty.
Flickr user Rusty saw his busted G4 iMac, his iPad and had a chocolate-and-peanut butter moment. He removed the iMac's innards and display. Next he cut and molded some acrylic to accommodate the iPad and attached it to the arm. Finally, a speaker pair was placed inside the iMac case with a cable running to the iPad's headphone jack. From there, all that was left was to pair a Bluetooth keyboard and plug the iPad into a wall!
Now he's got a retro-cool, swivel-arm iPad stand that's perfectly at eye level. Actually, the iMac looks a lot like it did with the original 15" display. We love it.

Weaning an addict isn't easy, and I'm addicted to information.
For a data junkie, the Internet is irresistible. It offers innumerable incoming streams, and with tools like Web browsers, RSS, Twitter and so on, I can soak them all up. The by-product, of course, is distraction. I flip from one to the other like a manic hummingbird, never satisfied. What else is going on, and how quickly can I find out about it?
It's amazing how eagerly we invite distraction upon ourselves. Consider how frequently we do two (or more) things at once. While an app launches, I check Twitter. As a Web page loads, I Command-Tab over to Mail. All the while, iTunes plays music, and I'm thinking about what else must be done today.
I became keenly aware of how infrequently I focus on one single thing when I started using my iPad. For the most part (yes, you can play music in the background), it does one thing at a time. In fact, when I'm using an app on the iPad, it becomes that app.

Well, that's what's been going on for many people who want the new iPhone. It started early this morning when people were trying to pre-order. In my case, I got thrown out 4 times, each time being told I had let the process time out. Hey, it wasn't me.
AT&T is also having major problems; in fact, that may be what's behind Apple's difficulties, as those who are buying new iPhones (not requiring a check of previous account status) seem to be having a much easier time of it. In the middle of of trying to upgrade via AT&T's site, people are getting this message:
Maintenance In Progress
AT&T is continually working to improve our internet site for our customers. As part of this ongoing effort, we are currently doing maintenance. We apologize for this inconvenience and ask that you please try back again later.
Right. It's not as if both companies didn't know this was coming. And Apple, after all, used to have the word 'Computer' in its name.
Some people are sliding by with no issues, but according to reports we're seeing, many aren't so lucky. The good news is that it looks like the new iPhone is going to be incredibly popular. The bad news is it's awfully hard for many people to order one.
[Thanks to all our suffering readers who shared their experiences]

Unofficial Apple Weblog - iPhone - Apple - iPhone 3G - HandheldsПереслать - App store pushes past 10,000 iPad apps
It was December of 2008 when the app store boasted carrying over 10,000 apps, back when something called an iPad was just a sparkle in our eyes (and probably called something much different). That feat took six months to accomplish. The 20,000 app mark took another three months.
Today -- only three months since the iPad's release -- the app store is listing the current iPad-native app count at over 10,000. To see this, you can visit the "Featured" section of the app store on an iPad, then select the "Release Date" tab. It's likely that, by the time you do this, your number will be a hundred or more higher than ours (pictured at right).
At first notice of this, I was pretty impressed. I mean, the iPad halved the time it took for the iPhone to reach the same app count. But really, this isn't all that surprising or remarkable when you consider the number of pre-existing iPhone apps that needed very little tweaking to become iPad native, plus the success of iPad sales.
Now, when is TapTapTap going to make an iPad app mosaic to celebrate this feat?

Who would have thought this would ever happen? Microsoft, according to PocketGamer.biz, is throwing some substantial upfront money at developers of popular iPhone apps to port their products over to Windows Phone 7, which may be their last great hope of getting enough apps on the device to make it tempting. It doesn't seem to be going over all that well, since the word is that it's not really worth the money to go through the time and expenditure to port theC++Objective-C apps over to Microsoft's standard formats of Silverlight or XNA Framework (C#).
One of their sources did say that there was the potential for Microsoft to alter their development frameworks to includeC++Objective-C, but that remains to be seen. If if did happen, the time and labor factors would decline tremendously and the money would seem much better. But as it stands now, it's not going over too well in the development community.
Update: Sorry for the mixup. Both PocketGamer and 9to5 are citing the challenge of porting C++ games to C#; however, if the point is to move iPhone apps to WinPhone 7, as our commenters have rightly noted, then it's a migration from Objective-C instead.

Microsoft - Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Microsoft XNAПереслать - Mac 101: Moving files from your old PC to your new Mac
Filed under: Switchers
A friend asked how to get her music, photos, and documents from her PC to her new Mac.
There was actually a "Get a Mac" ad about this called Off The Air. In the commercial, the services was described as being free. I called Apple and was told that yes this is still available and free -- but I think the person I spoke to was wrong. Apple's "Why Mac?" FAQ says that this is now part of the One to One service, which is $99 and only available when you buy a new Mac. Apple also has an article entitled Switch 101: Migrate Your Files or Your Windows System which is also designed to help.
If you can't use One to One, option number two is to copy files from your PC to an external hard drive, connect that drive to your Mac, and move the files over. If you already have an external hard drive, this is a great idea. Even if you don't have one, it would be a good idea to invest in one so you can later use it for Time Machine.
Option number three is to copy files over a local network. This has the advantage of being free, assuming you already have a local network setup.
Read on for instructions on moving files over your network...

As rumored, Apple has released an official retail store app. Simply called "Apple Store," the new app lets users shop the full line of products available at The Apple Store. But it's more than shopping.
You can use the app to read customer reviews, find an Apple Retail Store in your area and monitor in-store events. Speaking of the brick-and-mortar stores, if you're planning a visit you can first use the Apple Store app to arrange personal shopping, schedule a Genius Bar appointment or organize a One to One session.
And we thought those vending machines were dangerously convenient. After years of growing accustomed to the easy of "tap and buy" with the App Store, it's a bit frightening to have a Mac mini or the like just as accessible.

AppStore - iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - KonamiПереслать - Mac Mini gets a sneaky update: spec bump, unibody enclosure, HDMI
Filed under: Mac mini
Amidst all the excitement over iPhone 4 being available for pre-order, Apple also snuck an update to the Mac Mini under the radar -- and it's a pretty big update. The new Mac Mini comes in two flavors:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
320 GB hard drive
$699
or the "server class" Mac Mini:
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
Dual 500 GB hard drive
$999
Both models of Mac Mini have been updated with NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, the same integrated GPU present in the MacBook and MacBook Pro.
The Mac Mini has received far more than a simple spec bump, however. The enclosure itself has been updated to a unibody aluminum construction similar to the MacBook Pro, and the "server" Mac Mini omits an optical drive entirely in favor of dual hard drives [this was the case for the previous server model -Ed.]. Perhaps more important than that, the Mac Mini is now the first Mac ever to include built-in HDMI. You read that right: the Mac Mini has HDMI. The Mac Mini also has an SD card slot in the back. [Ed: This is one sexy little machine!]
Apple has also addressed the well-known difficulty of upgrading the Mac Mini's RAM. There's now a removable twist-off panel on the Mac Mini's bottom that allows for easy access to the Mini's RAM slots. We're not sure yet if the hard drive will be as easy to upgrade, but at the very least, a RAM upgrade looks like it'll take less than a minute with this new model.
The Mac Mini is available now.

RadioShack - IPhone - Best Buy - Apple - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - iPhone 4 preorders start tomorrow, but when exactly?
Update: Preorders are live!
The emails haunt our sleep. Plaintive in tone, they ask the same question... and they just. Keep. Coming. When? they ask. Do I have to stay up late, or get up early? The anxiety, the tension. When? When?
For the iPad launch preorder kickoff, we asked on your behalf and we got an answer; in this case, we we've had no response from Apple PR to tell us exactly when the iPhone 4 preorders will begin. Maybe that's a protective step, to keep AT&T's systems and Apple's store from getting deluged; we don't know. The retail outlets that are accepting preorders (Radio Shack and Best Buy; the Walmart sales don't kick in until launch on 6/24) will presumably be ready to go when they open Tuesday morning.
Update: One of our commenters reports that he was told by an Apple phone rep to check the store at 9am ET, 6 am PT.
What we can do is give you the likely times, and a quick bit of advice. [Thanks to timeanddate.com for the fixed time links.]
Option A: Midnight, Eastern time. Not a particularly likely candidate, as it would put the heaviest load on the purchasing systems overnight when the support leads are presumably asleep. Still, if you're up and want to check the store, we won't tell.
Option B: Midnight Pacific. Again, doesn't seem like a good bet, but it's possible.
Option C: 8:30a ET/5:30a PT. This was the time for the iPad preorder kickoff, and it's a reasonable guess -- AT&T's headquarters team will already be on the clock, and Apple's store ops folk can be ready.
Option D: 8-9 am PT. By this time, all of the East Coast will be at work or school, but it might be when the gates finally fall open.
The piece of advice mentioned above? Relax, for crying out loud. Whenever you happen to wake up and check the site will be plenty of time to get your preorder in -- they are not likely to bump delivery dates on the first day of preorders. Have a calming beverage, get a good night's sleep, and let your dreams wander amongst the Retina Displays and the gyroscopes of your imagination.

IPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AT&T - timeanddate.comПереслать - iPhone 4 has 802.11n, but not the "awesome" 802.11n
Filed under: iPhone
I suspect many people were very happy to see that the iPhone 4 was listed as having 802.11n. I know that I was. I have a dual-band network at home which separates 802.11n from 802.11b/g, and that's made a huge difference in transfer times. But there's also another benefit of 802.11n: it can use the 5GHz frequency band instead of the 2.4Ghz. Without going into too much detail, most (but certainly not all) of the benefit of 802.11n comes if you use 5Ghz, because it isn't cluttered with other devices like 2.4Ghz is.
So imagine my dismay when I went to the iPhone 4 technical specifications page and saw "802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz only)" listed there. I wanted to double check my suspicion that this was bad news for people who want to avoid the interference issues that come with 802.11b/g.
When you have a question about Wi-Fi, especially in the Mac world, the guy to ask is TidBITS & Seattle Times columnist Glenn Fleishman. If you've ever read a great, informed (and informative) article on Wi-Fi that even a mere mortal could understand, chances are pretty good that Glenn wrote it. He wrote the most thorough analysis of the Wi-Fi woes at the iPhone 4 demo that I have seen anywhere.
I asked Glenn about this on Twitter, and he confirmed my fears that 802.11n in 2.4Ghz will suffer from the same interference that b/g devices do. This makes "802.11n" partly just a marketing bullet point for iPhone 4 instead of a truly beneficial feature. If you're currently running a 5GHz-only N network, your iPhone won't take advantage.
For 2.4GHz N networks, you will probably get some speed boost over G (Glenn estimated perhaps 1.5x when using an 802.11n base station). When copying a 940MB file over my home Wi-Fi network between a Mac desktop and laptop, 802.11n took 2 minutes, 14 seconds compared to 15 minutes 45 seconds on 802.11g. Then again, most people won't be doing large wireless file copies to/from their iPhones until/unless wireless synchronization comes along.
So yes, Apple can boast that the iPhone 4 has 802.11n and they're telling the truth, but don't expect much practical difference day-to-day. Glenn suspects that given the newer chip and more efficient use of the radio spectrum, we might get better battery life on N than on G -- but we won't know for sure until the iPhones arrive.TUAWiPhone 4 has 802.11n, but not the "awesome" 802.11n originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
A good number of us at TUAW love Syntonetic's Moodagent app; it creates instant playlists around a mood you select, fitting the music to your state of mind. We reviewed it in December, and caught up with Syntonetic's president Richard French at Macworld who told me that the app had created profiles for over 30 million songs and has had over 1 billion songs requested.
I gave him a laundry list of feature requests. He told me that most if not all of my suggestions would be incorporated into the app in the next 3-6 months. True to his word, and right on schedule, Moodagent 2.0 is out including all my requests and a lot more. Richard seems to be passionate about listening to his user base and determined to give them what they want.
Moodagent creates genius mixes from your iPhone/iPod touch or iPad music libraries (it requires iPhone OS 3.0 or better). The mood is based on 4 sliders representing emotions (Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry) and a fifth for Tempo. You move the sliders up or down depending upon your mood and an instant mix is generated either automatically, or based upon a "seed" song of your choosing.
Since Macworld, the number of songs requested has risen to well over 2 billion and counting. Moodagent is now 2 apps, a free one that in version 2.0 is supported by advertising, and a paid app (US $4.99), with the only difference being that the paid version doesn't have any advertising and allows you to see one more song on the screen. That's it.
