- App demo: Poker 1 on 1 with Vanessa Rousso
Filed under: App Review
Celebrity endorsements fail to impress me, and Poker 1 on 1 with Vanessa Rousso is no different. Despite being on the teevee (as we say around these parts), all I'm looking for is her expertise in creating a great poker game for the iPhone. Well Headlight Software and Vanessa have a nice, attractive and fast poker app on their hands here. Highlights include easy access to another player via Bluetooth for head-to-head action and a cool meter for newbies that'll let you know how risky your bets are.
Another nice attribute of Poker 1 on 1 is the ability to move quickly through a hand. If you're an experienced poker player you don't need all the jibber jabber or fancy animations some apps provide. Poker 1 on 1 has animation, but it is only to recreate the feeling of being at the table, really playing poker and yet faster. Everything moves, just faster. Watch the video for the game in action. The AI is good, the graphics are good and here are unlockables. For a couple of bucks it's a good deal.TUAWApp demo: Poker 1 on 1 with Vanessa Rousso originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Earlier this week were discussing the Death Grip and comparing how we hold our iPhones. I thought we should pose the question to you. Several readers added photos of their preferred method to our Flickr pool, and we noticed two main styles among them: the Cradle and the Death Grip.
The Cradle is pictured at right. The iPhone rests on top of the pinky while the other fingers support it like a stand. The thumb is then free to reach and tap.
The Death Grip is any hold that contacts the lower left-hand corner of the phone and bridges the gap between the two antennas, as that's what appears to trigger the signal issue. The results were nearly split: 9 of you used some variant of the Cradle, while 8 employed a full-on Death Grip. One fellow followed Apple's suggestion to a T, as you'll see in the gallery below.
Thanks for sharing your photos with us, everyone. Now ... who's got antenna issues? Take our poll from earlier today and let us know.

The iPhone broke sales records for Apple (1.7 million units sold by release day) and still had people lining up a week later. That's impressive, but according to one analyst it could have been even better.
Shaw Wu of Kauffman Bros. believes that Apple could have sold between 2 million and 2.5 million iPhones had that many units been available. AppleInsider reports that he predicts Apple will sell 9 million iPhones in the June quarter and 40 million in 2010.
In related news, iSuppli said this week that Apple's failure to meet demand could be an opportunity for other manufacturers, as frustrated would-be iPhone owners give up. "Consumers, questioning Apple's supply chain management capability, have started to look for alternative devices," wrote Tina Teng, senior analyst for wireless communications at iSuppli.
Sure, some potential customers might abandon the iPhone in frustration, but enough to make a significant dent in Apple's bottom line? I doubt it. Those who really want one will eventually buy. If people are willing to stand in a sweltering line for 10 hours, a few weeks of waiting in a comfortably air-conditioned house is no biggie.TUAWApple taking risk with iPhone shortages originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST. I have to eat my words -- despite my belief before launch that an iPhone 4 wouldn't be hard to find without a preorder, I'm still waiting to get the chance to buy one. But I got to play with another one last night (that screen!), and just like every other time I've had a chance to use it, I've been very impressed by the back camera. Both stills and HD video look really amazing when taken with that thing. Here's another example: the Ducati motorcycle team filmed the entire commercial above on eight different iPhone 4s over a period of four days -- watching it in HD shows off just what this camera is capable of.
They did use the Owle Bubo, which explains some of the better shots a little bit. And you can also see that slight shudder so common to low-end HD cameras, especially when the camera pans quickly or tries to capture fast motion. But especially without color correction, the images still look terrific for a camera on your phone. The audio is great as well, but I'm not convinced they did that with only a phone. The final video was edited together in Adobe Premiere, just because "there were enough unknowns" without trying to use iMovie on iPhone for the first time.
Update: Looks like it's part of a contest -- if you've ever wanted to try and make a film and you've got an iPhone 4, get to it!

While AT&T's service has been notoriously bad even before the iPhone launch, iPhone users in New York City have suffered some of the worst of it, with one Apple Genius reportedly saying that 30% dropped call rate was average. (I think he misspelled "atrocious.")
The good news is that AT&T has rolled out a network upgrade in the NYC, according to the company's press release this week. The big question was: Will it actually help?
Early anecdotal reports are that yes, it has made a big difference. I've seen various snippets around the web of people posting that things seem to be better. I guess only time will tell for sure.
This also seems like a good time to remind you about AT&T's free Mark The Spot app for noting when you have either a voice or data issue. We've noted that some users are getting updated with news of tower build-outs near their reported dead spots. Personally I wondered if this was leveraging towers AT&T planned to install anyway, but I spoke with a friend who works for AT&T and he said "I know it's hard to believe, but it really does matter."
What say you, NYC folks? Has the upgrade been noticeable for you?

AT&T - New York City - iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Angry Birds HD updated with more levels... and crashiness
Filed under: iPhone, App Store, iPad
Angry Birds has been a phenomenal success, staying atop the App Store best seller list for months. I too, succumbed to the "bird in a slingshot" craze, as has my eight year old son who told me the other night he dreamed that he was in the slingshot.
Angry Birds HD was one of the first games that I downloaded for the iPad, but I was pretty disappointed. While the iPhone game was only $0.99, the HD version was $4.99, following an unfortunate trend where iPhone games are ported to iPad, cost much more, and don't add any new features. But Angry Birds HD actually had fewer features and levels than the iPhone version. Rovio told us at E3 that they'd be fixing that soon.
Well, as promised, an update came out a few days ago which added more levels and brought the game up to par with the iPhone version. Unfortunately the game has also added what one friend called "extreme crashiness action." So far I haven't actually lost any progress due to a crash, but it's fairly annoying. Hopefully there will be another update soon.
As a side note, developer Marco Arment noted back in May that the App Store was full of scams and ripoff apps surrounding Angry Birds, some which use the same name, and others which use the same artwork. It's sad to see that these apps are still there, and to know that they are profiting unfairly off the success of a popular game. Why Apple would allow some of these apps to remain and purge others is beyond me.TUAWAngry Birds HD updated with more levels... and crashiness originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST. iPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPadПереслать - Rogue Amoeba on background audio and Airfoil Speakers Touch
Filed under: SDK
Dan Wineman, a developer with Rogue Amoeba, has posted an interesting article on the company blog. I'm a big fan of developers who can explain things clearly to non-developers without sounding condescending, and Dan does a great job covering how the limited version of multitasking available in iOS 4 poses a problem for Airfoil Speakers Touch.
For those who aren't familiar with Airfoil, it is Rogue Amoeba's program for Windows and Mac which allows you to send audio to AirPort Express units, Apple TVs, and iOS devices. Previously it was of limited use for iPhone and iPod touch owners because you had to keep the app running in the foreground for the audio to play.
While Dan said that adding background audio was easy, there were deeper issues involving how iOS 4 manages background processes, especially due to how Airfoil works on the network. It's a good read.
Even as a non-programmer, I'm fascinated by the attention to detail that good programmers go into to make sure their applications work, especially when dealing with limited "resources" like you'd find in mobile devices. Remember when it seemed that CPU speed, RAM, disk space, and bandwidth were not going to be limiting factors anymore because desktop computers kept growing and growing and dial-up Internet access was being replaced by DSL and cable? Then along come mobile devices which brought back all of those limits. Although, it's worth noting that the average cell phone has more processing power than the Apollo computers, so I guess limitations are relative.TUAWRogue Amoeba on background audio and Airfoil Speakers Touch originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPod Touch - Rogue AmoebaПереслать - iPhone 101: Quitting apps in iOS 4
Filed under: iPhone 101
iOS 4 makes it easy to leave apps without quitting, but what happens when you actually do want to terminate an application? Quitting applications can really help with older apps that have not been updated for iOS 4 "multitasking" and that do not properly return to the state they previously were in when resumed. There's are two ways you can quit, although neither one is particularly obvious.
Force Quitting To force an application to quit, Apple recommends that you bring the app you want to quit to the foreground. Then press and hold the sleep/wake button for several seconds, until the Slide to Power Off control appears. Release the sleep/wake button and hold down the Home button for another 7-10 seconds. Your screen will flash briefly and you will return to the main iOS 4 Springboard home page with its icons. This method works for all operating systems from iPhone OS 3 forward, and is the preferred method listed in the iOS 4 documentation.
Removing the Application from the Recents List There's actually a much simpler approach for quitting apps, and that's to use your recent app list. Double-click the home button to display the recently accessed applications. Press and hold any of the icons shown, then navigate to the application you want to quit and tap the red circled minus button. This sends a signal to the application in question that allows it to quit. The application will be re-added to the recents list the next time you launch it.
If you continue to experience any reliability issues or if your iPhone simply isn't working right, you can always restart your phone by pressing the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds and then sliding across to shut the phone down.TUAWiPhone 101: Quitting apps in iOS 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. Apple has pushed out a new version of MobileMe Gallery, a free app for people who post pictures to the MobileMe service and want to access them on their iPhone or mail them to friends.
Apple says the app now higher resolution images on an iPhone 4 when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple also says, with no specifics, that there are 'various bug fixes'.
What's missing from all this is that iPad owners have to use the same Gallery app and scale it up, making their images look precisely like crap. You'd think that with the beautiful iPad screen Apple would support it with a universal app. Well, maybe someday.

It's hard out there for a hip-hop star. Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas recently had a not so good, good night. Thieves broke into his parked Bentley and made off with $10,000 worth of loot including jewelry, other personal property and the singer's shiny Apple iPad.
However, law enforcement officials have honed in on the the perpetrator using the iPad's GPS functionality, and are close to making an arrest. The exact means they used for locating the iPad, however, is unknown -- i.e., whether it was an app or MobileMe's "Find My iPhone/iPad" feature.
Whether for a special event performance or music partnership, Apple has collaborated with many musicians in a variety of ways. Back in 2004 the Black Eyed Peas, and their hit "Let's Get it Started," were prominently featured in the launch of the iMac G5.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - MobileMe - IPhoneПереслать - Five little-known features in iOS 4
Filed under: Tips and tricks, iPhone
Whenever word gets out about a potential software update, as it did for iOS 4 back in January (then called iPhone OS 4), you don't have to look far to find speculation about features or functionality the new version will include.
This is especially true for major revisions of the OS, which is ironic when you consider that developers get access to beta versions of the OS for testing purposes -- most smaller updates are kept under wraps right up until they are released.
When Apple does officially announce a major update, it usually is quick to list the big changes that the update brings as a way to persuade developers to get in and start updating their apps to make use of the new features. Quite often, everyone focuses their attention on these main features, and discussion moves to whether or not the new OS will support things like
Whether these changes are minor tweaks in how something works or the addition of new functionality that subtly enhances the users' experience, they often go unnoticed for one of two reasons: either they "just work" so well that the user doesn't need to know they exist, or they require the user to do something extra to enable or locate the feature. Since both of these involve the user not being aware of something, we think it's safe to assume that bringing these little-known features to light will help.
Read on for a list of five little-known features in iOS 4 that we think deserve more attention.TUAWFive little-known features in iOS 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 13:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Old school Mac users like me were trained to quit apps that aren't in use. Finished with Explorer? Quit it. All done using Photoshop? Command-Q. This habit came from a time when computers shipped with less RAM than the iPhone 4, and is very hard to break.
Of course, your iPhone isn't running all those apps at once. When you double-click the Home button, you get a list of recently-used apps; they aren't all "running" in the Mac OS X sense. As MacDailyNews explains, some are in "suspended animation," much like Han Solo encased in carbonite. He's not dead, but he's not doing a whole heck of a lot, either. You'll find an excellent explanation of what's going on at TidBITS.
Conversely, Steve Jobs offered a customer a very brief explanation via email. "People shouldn't have to understand multitasking. Just use is [sic] as designed, and you'll be happy. No need to ever quit apps." In other words, the best option is not to think about it at all. iOS 4 knows what's its doing, so just leave it to its business.TUAWJobs: Use multitasking "as designed" and be happy originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. Steve Jobs - Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - MacDailyNewsПереслать - BGR posts AppleCare reception troubleshooter for iPhone 4
Filed under: iPhone
As Erica demonstrates in the video above, for some iPhone 4 users it's not that hard to show how the phone's reception is affected by holding it 'wrong.' BoyGeniusReport has a copy of what they claim is AppleCare's internal troubleshooting procedure for iPhone 4, which boils down to "the iPhone 4's antenna is great; avoid holding it that way; and no, you aren't getting a free bumper." BGR also points out that if this is the official line, notably absent is any hint of a software fix coming (counter to what AppleInsider suggested last week). Of course, if there isn't a problem, then why would Apple be planning to fix it?
To an extent, Apple (and Steve Jobs who was widely reported to have told a user not to hold their iPhone a certain way) is right. All cell phones have this issue. Yes, Nokia, even yours. But Apple's blasé response to this issue is going to give it legs, especially when Apple's solution is to buy a $30 bumper that they just happened to have started selling to coincide with the iPhone 4 release.
Speaking as someone who remembers when iPhones used to come with a dock in the box, and who assumes that the actual production cost of a bumper is probably closer to $5 than $30, I'm surprised Apple isn't trying to avoid the seemingly inevitable class action lawsuit by throwing in a bumper to anyone who has the problem and brings their iPhone 4 into an Apple Store. After all, Nintendo put a wrist strap on the Wii Remote but still gave away plastic grips to help people who were losing control of them. And the story died.
There's no doubt that this issue is clouding the iPhone 4's release, even if the issue is only affecting a small percentage of iPhone 4 users (and we don't know what that percentage is). My friend Richard Gaywood posted a detailed explanation of the issue and why it is more likely to be discernible in areas of weak coverage (which AT&T customers refer to as "just about everywhere"). AnandTech posted a detailed explanation as well. MacRumors reported the experience of one user who resolved reception problems with a reseating of the iPhone's MicroSIM, which is easy enough to try on your own.
So our question to you iPhone 4 owners is: have you seen it?

If you're a power user like our very own Erica Sadun, you may have already run into that situation where your iPhone 4 burns through a full charge and leaves you high and dry. Sure, you can use any number of external battery packs that use a Dock Connector dongle, but maybe you want a pack that isn't a unitasker.
KONNET Technology updated the PowerEZ Plus today, which not only provides extra power to just about any iPhone or iPod touch device -- including the iPhone 4 -- but also includes a retractable kickstand for watching movies in landscape mode, much like the stand on the back of the new Droid X.
The 1000mAh PowerEZ Plus retails for US$29.99 and won't take up a lot of space in your pocket or bag. It's just .5" thick, and plugs into the bottom of your device. When you want to do some hands-off video viewing, just pop out the stand. There are four LEDs to tell you the charging level of the pack, and a recharge can be done by connecting the included USB charge/sync cable to the computer of your choice.
The PowerEZ Plus also has Smart Charging technology built-in to ensure that charging stops when your device's battery is topped off. Starting this Friday, KONNET is giving away a couple of PowerEZ Plus packs on their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/KONNET. iPhone - Apple - Keynote - iWork - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Bezos: Kindle and iPad are separate devices
Just yesterday, we were talking about how groovy it is that Amazon is strongly supporting their iPhone and iPad apps, even while trying to sell competing hardware with the Kindle device. But Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a recent interview that it's not really a choice -- "the Kindle is for readers," and he considers the iPad "a different product category." That's interesting. Most people might view the iPad and the Kindle as competing devices, especially since the Kindle has apparently dropped price to try and stay relevant. But Bezos says Amazon's strategy is "buy once, read everywhere." The company is selling ebooks, and while there are reasons you might want to read them on your Kindle, they're fine with reading them on your iPhone or iPad as well.
That actually sounds like a great strategy for Amazon. While I still have my doubts that the Kindle isn't a competitor in the eyes of consumers (if you have an iPad at home, would you really pick up a Kindle?), it's at least good news for iPad owners that Amazon is sharing the love with the Kindle app.

Owen Goss is the mind behind Streaming Colour Studios, makers of Dapple and Monkeys in Space. I first met Goss earlier this year at at the 360iDev conference, and during his panel there (in which he created a game about bacon farming in just 90 minutes), he showed off a few early shots of a puzzle game called LandFormer. LandFormer is now out in the App Store, and it's a puzzle game with a pretty steep slope in difficulty and a really excellent look and feel.
The goal of the game is to level out all of the lands in a little playing field, which you do by raising and lowering them in a few different patterns. You're given a target number of moves, and the challenge comes in leveling the land before the move timer runs out.
The app is free, but it only comes with 10 beginner levels to start. 50 more levels can be bought within the app for US$1.99 (and a premium theme can be picked up for 99 cents), with presumably more levels to come. Fortunately, Goss has created a fully featured level editor with the free version -- you can make and share levels with anyone, and even "download" new levels through an ingenious URL system. If you're up for a few mindbending puzzles (and maybe have a few friends to create and share levels with), definitely give LandFormer a look.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Landformer originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 08:00:00 EST. When I used to read OMNI magazine I remember getting into the whole subliminal and self-hypnosis fad. I bought a few cassettes but didn't wind up seeing a ton of results. Maybe I was doing it wrong because there's some research that points to the possibility that positive affirmations, voiced while you sleep, may have an effect on your conscious thoughts. If someone whispered in my ear all night that I was a super guy, I could see how that might wind up making me feel a little better.
Enter The Mind Medic, an app to whisper in your ear through the night and provide you with affirmations designed to change behaviors. Quitting smoking is the classic use case for such an app. The app allows you to record your own affirmations and plays them back at specific intervals throughout the night. It doesn't just repeat them every 5 minutes -- you'd never go to sleep! An update should be coming that will allow this app to run in the background as well, which would make it a bit more useful, I think.

I observed the behavior, worst when holding the phone in my left hand, for the duration of the call. I was more than a little irritated, as this was a feature since the first iPhone and, at the time, a big deal
Users are reporting buttons being hit as well, which is even worse if you use your iPhone for, you know, a phone. I'm hoping the next OS update will fix it, but in the meantime, let us know in the poll below if your iPhone 4 isn't registering the side of your face during a call.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Operating system - Handhelds - SmartphonesПереслать - Bloomberg: vPhone coming in January
Filed under: iPhone
That iPhone on Verizon rumor just won't die -- Bloomberg is now reporting that we'll see an iPhone on Verizon's service in January of next year. "Two people familiar with the plans" say that AT&T exclusivity will finally end next year, and analysts say that if that happens, Apple will sell lots more iPhones, up to 3 million more per quarter to Verizon's 90 million or so customers.
Of course there's no comment by Apple or Verizon so far, and I'll point out that we've heard this rumor time and time and time again -- first back in January of this year, then for the new iPhone 4 announcement and WWDC, and now pushed off until next year. Basically, don't hold your breath. It wouldn't be bad to get away from the often complaint-worthy service at AT&T, but if Apple hasn't seen fit to end exclusivity so far (and don't forget that we're still seeing record iPhone sales), why would it do so next year?

What started out as an April Fool's Day joke has spawned an actual product...sort of. Much like the infamous Tauntaun Sleeping Bag, people were inspired by Think Geek's gorgeous vintage arcade-style cabinet for the iPad. Who wouldn't be?
This working unit -- albeit kind of rough -- was made by the folks at Freekade. They make built-to-order arcade cabinets, as you might have guessed. With the old-school controls connected to this iPad, it looks like a little piece of nostalgic heaven. I get to play the winner!TUAWAnother working iPad arcade cabinet originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 16:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Filed under: iPhone, iPod touch, App Review, iPad
A few years ago, the game company Wizkids - best known for collectible offerings like Mage Knight and HeroClix - took a stab at the everything-in-the-box game market with an offering called Tsuro: The Way of the Path. The game had decent graphics and a vague Asian theme but looked (and was) pretty simple. You have a pawn that moves as far as it can along the path that it's on. Each turn, you have to extend the path by playing a tile in front of your pawn, and get a little bit closer but hopefully not too close to crashing into another player or running off the board.
Tsuro got a lukewarm reception from the boardgame community, and Wizkids eventually stopped producing the game (but it will soon be picked up by Mayfair subsidy Kosmos) Now, a graphically-simple version of the game lives in the App Store, and it makes an easy and light filler even easier.
The app comes in two versions, one for the iPad called Pathology HD that costs US$2.99, and one for the iPhone/iPod touch that's just called Pathology and costs $1.99. Looks and gameplay are the same on both devices, and there's only a little bit lost when playing on the small screen. Still, even a game this graphically simple is much more engaging on the iPad's bigger screen. Read on to find out how "the Way of the Path" operates and why it takes the idea of a filler game to the extreme.

Hulu has finally announced their long-rumored subscription service, and it's a doozy. It's called Hulu Plus. For US$9.99 per month, you'll get you ad-supported access to the full current seasons of most shows and full back seasons of select shows. Plus, brand new Hulu Plus apps for the iPhone and the iPad will bring the television to you. The apps work over either WiFi or 3G, though the iPhone version requires iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. The service sounds pretty good -- I would have to untangle my internet service from my cable bill, but otherwise, a system like this might just replace my cable box.
The apps are supposed to be available today, but they're not on the App Store quite yet, apparently. Meanwhile, Hulu is sending out invites to the service as we speak -- sign up, tell them what devices you've got and a few demographic bits, and wait for the email to show up. The Netflix app on the iPad has already been a hit since launch, and this Hulu Plus service seems like it'll be just as popular.
Update: The apps are now in the App Store, although of course you need a preview account to use them.TUAWHulu Plus announced for iPhone and iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

After spending your hard-earned money on new iPads, iPhones, and other great hardware from Apple, wouldn't it be nice to get something of value for free? That's the concept behind Jumsoft's Goodies, which include art and templates for a number of Mac applications.
The Lithuania-based developer has recently expanded the Goodies bundle with five Web site designs for Karelia Software's Sandvox application, a set of 500 photos and images to use in Keynote presentations, and nine templates for Numbers.
The Sandvox templates each include ten different page types, everything from a simple rich text page to a detailed site map. Numbers users get nine templates ranging from a dinner planner to a media advertising analyzer, while fans of Keynote will be pleased with 500 textured background photos and still-life images. Those photos and images are also useful in Pages, PowerPoint, or any other situation where professional illustrations are required.
You can download the new Goodies and check out the older ones here. Free stuff is always appreciated -- what are your favorite places to get legal free software, templates, and images? Director Michael Koerbel of Makek Pictures notes that the short took 48 hours to create from start to finish. He's also promised to release a full behind-the-scenes video that will document its production.
It had to happen eventually. Here's the first (that we know of) movie shot and edited entirely on an iPhone 4. Two years ago we saw a music video that was shot with a jailbroken iPhone and Cycorder. Of course, the iPhone 4 ups the ante with HD video and iMovie for iPhone.
And just like that, the iPhone becomes a nice little tool for filmmakers, amateur and pro alike. It's not going to replace real cameras, of course, but you can use it to make something nice, as Koerbel has demonstrated.TUAWVideo shot and edited entirely on an iPhone 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
I have been having problems making calls on my iPhone 4. Whether at home or on the road, my signal strength is simply awful. The only place that I seem to get five bars is the Apple Store itself.
I visited the Genius Bar there tonight after Mike urged me to report my signal issues. So, I did. I called 1-800-SOS-APPL, and I was repeatedly and strongly urged to purchase a Bumper. I declined, so the rep made me a Genius Bar appointment.
The Genius hooked my phone into a laptop for diagnostics and told me that my calls were fine. The diagnostics showed no lost calls whatsoever -- in spite of what I experienced last night when I was repeatedly dropped from Talkshoe (see the image that accompanies this post). I ended up hopping over to a landline for the TUAW talkcast.

Joshua Piven's The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook sits on my desk. The book provides instructions on how to deal with certain scenarios, say wrestling yourself free from an alligator or landing an airplane. What it doesn't provide, however, is a guide for going without your Mac and using a Windows-based PC, which is a worst-case scenario for many TUAW readers. What if I was forced to use a PC notebook? What would I use?

This has all happened before, and this will all happen again.
When Apple and AT&T made the iPhone 4 available for pre-order, the demand was spectacular. The complete supply sold out within 24 hours. Customers who didn't get in figured they'd buy one from AT&T on the 24th. Wrong.
AT&T had no stock available for walk-in customers. Instead, they announced that they'd sell iPhones to those without reservations today, June 29th. As you might imagine, the 2nd wave of customers have formed lines across the country.
MacRumors has posted some photos of early-morning arrivals in Georgia and New Jersey. If you're in line, send your photos and stories to us via @ask_tuaw on Twitter. We'll pull some for use on the blog. Have fun and good luck!TUAWiPhone 4 customers line up again originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 10:00:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - AT&T - New JerseyПереслать - Emerald Observatory for iPad is stunning to look at, and it's useful too
Filed under: iPad
I can't think of another iPad app that looks quite as striking as Emerald Observatory. This US $0.99 app is the kind of thing you'd be proud to display if it was a physical object; even when it's running on the iPad, I'm tempted to leave it on as a conversation piece.
The single display gives you your local time, the position of the sun, the rise and set times of the sun and moon (and the 5 brightest planets), twilight start and end times, the current moon phase, a display of day and night on a world map, the current day and date (with a leap year indicator), and the ability to move forward or backward in time in order to see different planetary alignments and sun positions.
The app is certainly nice for star gazers, and it's also handy for photographers who may be looking for the best time of day to shoot outdoors.

I first heard about Pix'n Love Rush about a month ago from my colleague, JC.Fletcher, who described it as "a short, nervous, ristretto version of a platformer ... a sort of crossover between Mario and WarioWare, with a pinch of Galaxian and a hint of Game & Watch." And now that it's out on the App Store to play, I can say that's exactly what it is; it's a weird little mini platform game, with an art aesthetic that might turn off those not versed in gaming history.
The basic idea is that you play as a cat-like creature, and you bounce around a randomized series of 125 various 2D platforming stages, collecting good icons and staying away from bad ones. The gameplay is frenetic but forgiving. There are big bonuses to be had if you can pull things off perfectly (the colors and graphics flip through various designs), but even if you miss a few icons, the game will let you run through some quick platforming pleasures in a few modes.
If your taste in games begins and ends with FarmVille, this one's probably not for you. But if you're interested in experimental and art games, or if you just want to spend a quick 99 cents to see what this crazy, original gaming experience is like, give Pix'n Love Rush a try. It's definitely not a traditional title, but if you want to take a few steps off the beaten path in terms of gaming, there's a lot of fun to find.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Pix'n Love Rush originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 08:00:00 EST.
