- FaceTime video conferencing coming to the iPhone
Filed under: WWDC
At today's WWDC keynote, a new feature of the iOS 4 operating system called FaceTime was announced and demonstrated, bringing iChat like video conferencing to the iPhone. FaceTime requires no set up or configuration and will work with either the front or back facing camera on the iPhone 4, but the front facing camera has been "tuned" for FaceTime allowing you to hold the camera at arm's length to get a perfect picture. It works in both landscape and portrait orientation, and allows anyone running iOS 4, if the hardware supports it, to seamlessly video chat with anyone also running iOS 4 on another iPhone.
There will be a FaceTime button in the Contacts app and on on the Phone screen. Tapping it is all you need to do to initiate a video chat, even if you're already on a voice call. The recipient will get a message saying that a FaceTime session has been requested which can be accepted or rejected. Accept it, and you are video chatting.TUAWFaceTime video conferencing coming to the iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 20:30:00 EST. Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - WWDC - Technology - Wwdc2010Переслать - WWDC 2010: Early iPhone 4 upgrades offered by AT&T
Filed under: WWDC
At today's keynote at the WWDC, Steve Jobs stated that AT&T is cutting up to 6 months off of the usual 18-month service commitment before allowing a free upgrade to the iPhone 4 which will be released on June 24th. Since the iPhone 3GS was released last June, that should make anyone who bought one, and would like to get their hands on the newest model, applicable for the upgrade after 12 months, with an US$18 upgrade charge, which is right about now.
To find out when you can upgrade without a penalty you always could dial: *NEW# on your iPhone which will generate a text message telling when you can upgrade. I just did, since I bought my iPhone 3GS the day it was released last June, that and the text message that was sent to me said that I wouldn't qualify until 2/20/2011. This made very little sense in light of the new policy, so I called up AT&T to find out if I was applicable. They didn't know, telling me that since this is brand new information, it hadn't gotten to them yet. But they made a commitment to call me before the release date on the 24th. So, if you think the text message information you get is wrong, wait a few days before you call AT&T, so they can let the information filter into their system. At this point, they know less than we do.TUAWWWDC 2010: Early iPhone 4 upgrades offered by AT&T originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 19:30:00 EST. iPhone - Steve Jobs - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - WWDCПереслать - Safari 5 announced... prematurely? And now it's official.
It got no attention in Steve's WWDC keynote, and it's not showing up in Software Update as of yet, but according to an Apple press release, Safari 5 is out for release today. Many analysts expected Apple to discuss Safari 5 (among other hardware) during the keynote, but iPhone 4 and iOS 4 got all the attention.
The press release details several of the new features in Safari 5, including updates to HTML 5 features, the Nitro JavaScript engine, and more. Overall, Safari 5 is supposed to have 30% greater performance than Safari 4, and it will also include Bing as an optional search engine. More info on the features is available not only in the press release itself, but also a leak from earlier this week.
We attempted to confirm the release with Apple PR directly, but we haven't heard back. Since this isn't showing up on apple.com/pr, and as of yet it hasn't been released to Software Update, it's understandable that the PR Newswire release might be fishy to some. However, I used to work for PR Newswire, and I can say with 100% confidence that this release is legitimate; PR Newswire's releases come directly from the companies themselves.
We should see Safari 5 officially released sometime today.
Update: The press release has been pulled from PR Newswire. Based on my experience there, most likely this means the release was published prematurely. It will most likely go back up in the next few hours, around the time it was originally intended to be published. Meanwhile, the text of the press release is still viewable on Engadget.

Safari - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Safari 5 - IPhoneПереслать - iPhone 4's multiband antenna makes it a true 'world phone'
This morning, I read liveblogs about the WWDC keynote with growing irritation. I'd been hoping for a 64 GB capacity bump for iPhone 4, even though I knew in the back of my mind that engineering practicalities made it unlikely. The news that FaceTime will not only be WiFi only, but will also work only from one iPhone 4 to another, was also extremely disappointing. And the fact that the iPhone won't be getting down here to New Zealand until July, as opposed to June for the States, UK, and a few other countries, was probably the most annoying of all.
Then I went to the tech specs page for the iPhone 4, and like rolling fog after the sunrise, all of my irritation evaporated. Back in March, I wrote this: "Apple can put a better camera in it, add more capacity, a better processor, a front-facing camera for videoconferencing, and a dozen other things -- but quite honestly, I'd be perfectly happy if none of that made it into the next-gen iPhone so long as one feature does find its way in: support for 900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA."
According to Apple's tech specs for iPhone 4 & the FCC filing, I got my wish. Read on to find out why this unsung feature is actually a really big deal -- not just to me, but to millions of potential iPhone 4 customers.TUAWiPhone 4's multiband antenna makes it a true 'world phone' originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. Apple ducked out of awarding Mac design laurels at WWDC this year in favor of iPhone and iPad apps, so the geeks at Ars Technica jumped into the pool with valor and distinction.
Ars Technica solicited nominations from readers, then used staff to cull the list to get some well deserved winners.
The winners in each category are:
Best New OS X App: Transmit 4 by Panic (FTP client)
Best Mac OS X User Experience: Tweetie for Mac (Twitter client)
Most innovative OS X App: Dropbox (file sync tool)
Best App for Education: Papers (digital document management)
Best student-created App: Schoolhouse 3 (student database)
Readers' Choice Award: 1Password 3 (password management)
The winners get a laser engraved cube which looks quite spiffy. It's nice to see these apps recognized. Apple seems to expending a lot of energy on all things iPad and iPhone. Apple - iPhone - Mac OS X - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Ars TechnicaПереслать - Apple announces Bumpers for iPhone 4, gets into the protection biz
Filed under: iPhone
During an Apple keynote, it's almost impossible to catch all of the info flooding out of Moscone. One thing we did catch, and then had to search for, was something about "Bumpers."
A quick look at the pages on the Apple Web site didn't seem to show anything until I scrolled to the bottom of the Tech Specs page. Lo and behold, there was a very short description of Bumpers. Available in six colors (white, black, blue, green, orange, or pink), Bumpers slip over the stainless steel edge of your iPhone 4. They come with metal buttons for volume and power and are made of a combo of rubber and molded plastic.
This may explain why we've received several tips over the last few days from people saying that iPhone cases are being removed from the Apple Stores. Bumpers are Apple's first foray into the iPhone case business (a market that has been run by third parties so far), and it will be fascinating to see not only how they sell, but what the reaction will be from long-time case manufacturers.TUAWApple announces Bumpers for iPhone 4, gets into the protection biz originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 17:45:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - AppleStore - iPhone 4Переслать - WWDC 2010: More iAds details emerge
Filed under: WWDC
Steve Jobs said Apple created iAds to help developers make more money. The problem before iAds, to hear Apple tell the tale, had been that mobile ads on the iPhone were a bit of a kludge: different systems supported only basic interaction, they dumped you to Safari most of the time, and as each ad network does things differently, a developer wanting to make ad-supported apps had to do the math every time they signed up. With iAds, developers get 60% of the revenue generated by the ad in their app. They can pretty easily drop them into their apps because the system is built into iOS 4. But will anyone use them?
Advertisers are convinced they will. Quoting Steve via this morning's liveblogs, "So let me tell you some of the brands that will be advertising with us. Nissan, Citi, Unilever, AT&T, Chanel, GE, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Geico, Campbells, Sears, JC Penny, Target, Best Buy, Direct TV, TBS, and Disney... those are some of the brands." Those are no small potatoes. At the keynote Steve demonstrated an iAd for the upcoming Nissan Leaf electric car. It's a compelling ad, to be sure, with an interactive signup feature and even a chance to win a car just through the ad. Steve went so far as to project that Apple would have 48% of the mobile advertising market locked up by the end of this year. That's the $60 million in commitments they've got so far and then some! Granted, this is all new movement, and the ad industry has been desperate for a new play lately, with most "standard" ads on the web being annoying or easy to gloss over. Ad execs are clucking their tongues over the richness of the iAds platform (while seemingly missing the fact that they could have always built engaging experiences on the web this way without resorting to Flash).
On the developer side... Well, I'll do a little informal polling whilst here in San Francisco. But I think Apple will make this so easy to do that it'll be an easy decision for developers ready to serve advertising. My only concern: will these ads be sucking up the precious bandwidth on AT&T's network, causing me overages on data? I guess we'll find out when the system launches July 1 along with iOS 4.

Steve Jobs - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Safari - iPhoneПереслать - Is the iWork suite en route to iPhone?
Looking for more good news on the iPhone 4 front? Our eagle-eyed tipster iJcaP points out something that MacRumors also noted: on the iPhone 4 features page for Mail, a screenshot at the bottom lets a fairly large cat out of the bag. The picture shows an option to open a Keynote file... in Keynote. That, of course, implies a version of the iWork suite for the iPhone -- currently only available for the iPad.
Screenshot mixup, or true vision of the future? Sure would be another nice thing to have for the iOS 4 launch and iPhone 4 availability, dontcha think?
Update: The screenshot has been tweaked -- see the 2nd half of this post. It now says "Open in 'iBooks'" which is a trifle odd considering the email still refers to a presentation. Seems like this is not Apple's day for keeping things under wraps.TUAWIs the iWork suite en route to iPhone? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - IphoneOsПереслать - iOS 4 Gold Master Release Candidate almost ready for download
Filed under: Developer
Finally! TheiPhone OS 4.0 SDKiOS 4 SDK is almost (but not quite) ready to roll for all members of Apple's developer program, not just the paid App Store developers. However it's likely to be a week or two before everyone gets access to the GM release. Right now, it's still going to be a release candidate.
Paid devs are almost ready to finally start shipping apps leveraging the new firmware's amazingly cool features. We can't wait until we start seeing VoiP and Game Center apps in action.
Today, you'll be able to head on over to Apple's developer site and start downloading your copy of the 4.0 SDK release candidate. Although the site still shows beta 4, the gold master release candidate, as Steve announced at the Keynote this morning, should be ready momentarily.
Of course, the iPad SDK is another matter. Any iPad SDK, when it appears (likely in the fall sometime), will remain under an ongoing NDA until that firmware and SDK is officially released. But the good news is that the new version of the iPhone firmware is just around the corner on June 21st.

The rumor was partly true, Bing is indeed coming to the iOS search party; however, it will not be the default option as was speculated in January.
During today's WWDC 2010 keynote address, Steve Jobs announced that Bing would be alongside Google and Yahoo as available search engine choices for MobileSafari. While it may seem insignificant, mobile search is a huge market that Google is currently dominating and it appears that Apple wants to put a little competition into the mix.
While he wasn't gratuitous with his praise, Steve did say that he was impressed by Microsoft's implementation of their search engine in the browser. And no matter what Steve thinks, this additional option is a huge win for the Bing team at Microsoft. And hopefully a huge win for us, too -- competition in the search race will help out consumers a lot in the long run.TUAWWWDC 2010: Bing coming to MobileSafari search originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 16:20:00 EST. Apple has updated its website with all of the iPhone 4 information you'll need, including official stats for the device, lots of information about features and hardware, and the video showing off iMovie, FaceTime, and all of the other new software announced today.
Our two word review? "It's purdy." The iPhone, the video, all of it. Apple employees are effusive, as usual, and "Retina Display" and "optical lamination" is the new "magical and revolutionary" -- leave it to Apple to make a display that's so good, our eyes can't even see all of the pixels in it.
But seriously, iPhone 4 already looks like a hit, and we haven't even actually seen the device yet. App Store - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - Apple Worldwide Developer Conference - WWDCПереслать - WWDC 2010: iPhone 3GS drops to $99 on June 24
Filed under: iPhone
Starting June 24, the price of the iPhone 3GS, which began life at $199 (for 16GB) and $299 (for 32GB) will drop to $99 for the 16GB model. Even a hardened Apple follower like myself can't help but marvel at the fact that what was once an amazing device is now sitting on my desk looking at me dejectedly.
Yes, the iPhone 3GS introduced enough power to record video, a compass, voice control and a 3-megapixel camera. But with the iPhone 4 coming soon, the price of the 3GS will drop to $99 for the 16GB model just as previous models of iPhone dropped in price when a new model came along. This appears to be the only model of 3GS that will soon be available, with the iPhone 4 available in 16GB and 32GB configurations. If you're a bargain hunter and you don't need all of the new features announced today, mark your calendar accordingly.
The iPhone 3G will no longer be sold via Apple or AT&T once the iPhone 4 launches.

Apple's quirky accounting for iPhone sales -- which the company cited as a reason it was able to offer free updates for those devices, but not for the all-the-profit-at-once iPod touch units -- has been left behind, so now the equal playing field includes all the iDevices. Enjoy your upgrade!

If something's all-new, it's gotta have a snappy new name. Among the technical innovations announced today during Steve's keynote at WWDC was one branding update -- the operating system formerly known as "iPhone OS" will now be known as "iOS," with version 4 in golden master now.
We hate to bring the buzzkill, Steve, but remember how the iPhone trademark was actually owned by another technology company when you introduced the product? Guess what. Cisco's router operating system... uh... well, it's already called IOS. Apparently the first new feature of iOS 4 is "pays for trademark lawyers' summer homes." iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple Worldwide Developers Conference - Operating systemПереслать - WWDC 2010: Farmville for iPhone coming soon
Filed under: iPhone, App Store
Zynga showed up on the stage at the WWDC keynote this morning to show off one of the most-awaited (and most hated) apps coming to the iPhone: Farmville. The popular Flash-based social networking game is finally making its way to the iPhone by the end of June, and it'll be bringing at least one new feature along in the form of push notifications for when your crops are done. Players will also be able to make in-app purchases for the Farmville marketplace, all of the game's information will sync with their Facebook version, and the game will come with an exclusive pet: a Snow Leopard. Cute.
The assembled press in San Francisco were humdrum about the announcement, as most of them aren't Farmville players (and lots of you probably aren't either). But there are millions and millions of players of this game around the world, and when one of the biggest games in the world comes to Apple's platform, that's a big deal. iPhone - Facebook - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - WWDCПереслать - WWDC 2010: Apple announces iMovie for iPhone 4
Today at WWDC, during the keynote address, one of the things Steve dropped upon us is the new camera in iPhone 4: Yeah, the 3G S did video, but the new camera does "full HD," at a sparkly 720p and 30fps. This means that little handheld video camera that's been on my Christmas list the last three years is now gone. Why get one when my new iPhone will do it?
So you fill your phone full of video. What to do with it? If it was your Mac, you'd be flexing your iMovie muscles, wouldn't you? Now you can do the same on your iPhone: Steve showed some demos of iMovie for iPhone today, including one-click sharing, and the tap to focus that works in photos. Even the new LED flash gets in on it: You can leave it on the whole time you're shooting. Export options are 360p, 540p, and the original 720p resolution.
And of course, the app also lets you run transitions, titles, and anything else the full version of iMovie will let you do. There are even themes and theme music to choose from -- Apple's video engineer says it's the best way to edit video on a mobile device he's ever seen.
So now you can record beautiful video, edit down to the good bits, and email that video off to any of the tubes. As long as it goes through the app review process, that is -- according to Steve, "You'll be able to buy this for $4.99 ... if we approve it." Funny. When it appears on the App Store, we'll let you know.TUAWWWDC 2010: Apple announces iMovie for iPhone 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 14:16:00 EST. As expected, and with a joke ("Stop me if you've seen this"), Steve Jobs announced the new iPhone 4 today at the World Wide Developers Conference.
That case we've all seen was more or less the final product. Steve called it "the most beautiful thing we've ever created." It's got glass front and back for durability and scratch-resistance. About that band of metal that surrounds the phone's edges? It's all a part of the antenna. Pretty neat.
The screen also got a huge boost. It's a Retina Display producing 326 ppi (pixels per inch). That's a full 4x as many pixels than the 3GS sports in same amount of space. As Steve noted, "...300 ppi is limit of the human retina when held 10-12 inches away from the eye." So, it's sharp, and now we know why it's called the "Retina Display".TUAWWWDC 2010: Apple announces iPhone 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 14:05:00 EST. During the WWDC 2010 keynote with Steve Jobs, the CEO of Netflix. Reed Hastings, came on stage to discuss the impending release of Netflix for iPhone. The app is slated to be available this summer and features the ability to both manage your queue and stream movies from your Instant queue.
Additionally, Netflix for iPhone will be able to resume streaming a movie where previously left off from your iPad. The iPad app has been extremely popular, and the iPhone app will bring Netflix's popular service to even more places while you're out and about. Movies will even stay synced over multiple devices, so you'll be able to start a movie on your Mac, switch in place to your iPad, and then start it up on your iPhone when you want to.
Sounds awesome -- we'll keep an eye out for the app and let you know when it comes out.

iPhone - Apple - Steve Jobs - Netflix - IPadПереслать - WWDC 2010: iBooks update includes PDF viewer
Filed under: WWDC
iBooks, Apple's native e-book reader on the iPad, is getting some updates, as announced today by Steve Jobs at the WWDC keynote. Among those updates are (better) support for bookmarks and the fulfillment of one of the most common requests: native PDF viewing. With the update, users will be able to navigate their own PDF's in the same fashion as the EPUB-format books that iBooks uses.
This is great news for me, and -- judging from the applause -- quite a few iPad users. It means not having to convert all of my PDF books to EPUB in Calibre (which has done a great job thus far, by the way). Hopefully the new functionality, which is due out later this month, will be as useful as some of the existing iPad apps, and provide the extra polish and simplicity that Apple's so good at.TUAWWWDC 2010: iBooks update includes PDF viewer originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 12:45:00 EST. Steve Jobs - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple Worldwide Developer Conference - IPadПереслать - Foxconn offers Shenzhen factory workers another raise
Filed under: Apple Corporate
The Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China (where many Apple products are assembled) has come under scrutiny recently as employees were committing suicide at an alarming rate. Factory management have finally taken a proactive response, offering immediate pay increases to workers. Today it was announced that additional raises would be distributed in October.
The company said in a statement this week that the increase should lessen the burden on individuals who must complete overtime hours to make ends meet financially. "While overtime work was always voluntary, this wage increase will reduce overtime work as a personal necessity for some employees and make it a personal choice for many workers."
The suicides and attempted suicides are terrible, but below China's national average. According to a Nov. 2008 study published in The Lancet medical journal, China averaged 15.05 suicide-related deaths per 100,000 people between 2000 and 2006. Foxconn employs over half a million workers, and 10 suicide-related deaths since January is fewer than the average. Of course, even one is one too many.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - Apple - WWDC - IPadПереслать - File under "ick": NYC iPad demo units sporting bacteria
Maybe it's not surprising that a flat surface touched by thousands of fingers would end up harboring some nasty critters, but the Daily News has a word to the wise for iPad shoppers in the Big Apple: BYO hand sanitizer. The paper surreptitiously swabbed and cultured samples from iPads at the 5th Avenue flagship store and at the unfortunately-nicknamed "Meatpacking" store on W. 14th Street. Turns out those oleophobic screens don't repel everything.
One of the cultures turned up Staphylococcus aureus, a nasty pathogen that's responsible for skin infections and other illnesses. Another showed less-virulent yeast and bacterial contamination.
Apple insists that it keeps the iPads clean and that the stores are a healthy environment... but perhaps a small dispenser of antibacterial wipes would be in order. In the meantime, before and after playing with those iPads -- wash your hands!
Note: As commenters have pointed out, the Daily News neglected to sample other commonly-touched items like subway railings and doorhandles -- chances are they would have found similar bugs in those places, too.TUAWFile under "ick": NYC iPad demo units sporting bacteria originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 11:30:00 EST. San Francisco - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple Worldwide Developers Conference - Apple - Steve JobsПереслать - WWDC attendees: get the official app while it's hot
Filed under: WWDC
Many of the developers who are attending the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco this week are already on site, getting ready for the top development event of the year. Others are boarding trains, planes, and automobiles to get to WWDC 2010. One thing is for sure; they're all going to need to know what's going on once they get to the venue.
Apple announced the availability of its official WWDC app last week. The app has a schedule of conference sessions from the start of festivities this morning until the closing bell on June 11 at Moscone West. The list is searchable and sorted by date, with a choice of events that are currently in progress or events happening later.
The app has a favorites list that attendees can contribute to, and will provide updates on what's new and exciting throughout the conference. If you're not familiar with San Francisco, need to find parking, or need to know how to get between Moscone West and the Apple Store, there's a Places tab in the app with helpful information.
The free app is only available to developers who are attending the conference. To download it, go to http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/app -- you'll need to log in with the account that you used to purchase your WWDC ticket.

Apple - Apple Worldwide Developer Conference - Unofficial Apple Weblog - San Francisco - Moscone CenterПереслать - Full 90-min video of Steve Jobs at All Things Digital 8 posted
Filed under: Steve Jobs
The folks at All Things Digital have posted the full-length video of the interview that Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher did with Steve Jobs at D8. As usual, Steve provided several memorable moments.
This year, he discussed the tragic situation at Foxconn, where many Apple products are assembled. Several employees have committed suicide since January. He called it "very troubling" and noted that "we're all over this." In fact, Apple has sent investigators to the factory.
The group also discussed Apple's position on Adobe and Flash. "You have to pick the right horse to ride, technically, going forward," he said. Steve published his formal thoughts on Flash in April, which brought tensions between Apple and Adobe to a head. Jobs claims that Flash isn't the right tool for the iPhone and iPad, while Adobe claims that Apple is imposing restrictions on developers and consumers.
There's much more to the interview, of course, and Swisher and Mossberg did a stellar job of talking with Jobs as usual. The discussion is definitely worth watching, and a good way to bide your time until today's keynote.

The banners are hung by Moscone with care, in hopes that new iPhones will soon be shown there... yes, it's only a few short hours until Steve Jobs takes the stage at WWDC 2010. What will we see, and what will we hear? The revitalization of Apple TV? A ship date for iPhone OS 4? New Mac mini, new iPhone carriers, or something completely unexpected?
As you bide your time checking out these delightful images of the keynote line and the conference setting (photos courtesy Glasshouse Apps and Adam Jackson), take a moment to tell us what you think will be revealed. In the comments below, make your best guess; we'll read them all (timestamped, of course, no cheating) and acknowledge the sharpest prognosticator.

Steve Jobs - Apple - WWDC - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iPhone 3GПереслать - Ecamm introduces iPad document management with PadSync
Filed under: iPad
It's a sad fact. The current version of iTunes can barely handle the new document management features introduced by Apple. As part of the 3.2 release of the iPad and soon to extend to the iPhone, the Apps tab now allows you to manually add, replace, and delete documents from applications that support iTunes-to-user file sharing.
The big problem is that iTunes does this poorly, with lots of bugs in its implementations. Worst of all, you cannot directly access files from iTunes to edit those documents in-place. Think about it: You offload a text document to your iPad, make some in-place edits, and want to continue updating that document on your Mac until you next hit the road.
Enter Ecamm. The company, well known for its Mac and iPhone utilities, has released the first version of its PadSync tool. PadSync, which retails for $9.95, offers direct access to your iPad Documents folders from a desktop Mac application. As the gallery here shows, your shared files are accessible on an app-by-app basis. Double-click on a Word file, and you can open it in Microsoft Word, edit it, and save it back.
Updates on the Mac instantly sync back to the iPad -- with one exception. Ecamm is still working on subfolder support, such as the Inbox that's created by the 3.2-and-later document sharing classes. Beyond that, PadSync offers all the instant synchronization you could wish for. Oh, and don't forget my favorite feature: since files are mirrored as well as synced on the Mac, you can access those files and queue up new ones even when the iPad is not connected to the Mac.
PadSync offers a 7 day free demo, so you can test out the app before purchase.

iPhone - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Microsoft WordПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Highborn
Filed under: App Store
Highborn is an interesting little App Store title. It won't be for everyone -- it's a turn-based strategy game that has a pretty steep learning curve, and while the actual game itself is pretty casual as games like this go, players unfamiliar with of moving troops around could find it confusing. But those interested in the genre (the gameplay actually reminded me a lot of Nintendo's Advance Wars series) will find it a fun distraction.
You control troops and heroes on a tesselated board, and can pit various units against each other in battle. The story is silly and fun, and the emphasis is on simple advantages and odds rather than hardcore troop placement and balance.
It's not the only game of its kind on the App Store (Battle for Wesnoth is another example for a bit more money), but Highborn is a fun and original title that combines the basics of turn-based tactical strategy with a fun fantasy story and a portable package. It's on an introductory sale right now for US$2.99.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Highborn originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:00:00 EST. AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Game - Nintendo - Video GamesПереслать - "Magic Slate" to be unveiled today at WWDC?
Engadget has some photos of the supposed Multi-Touch trackpad peripheral Steve Jobs is going to unveil today at WWDC. There's some debate on what its name will be, but "Magic Slate" popped up back in December, and then "Magic Trackpad" showed up in an Apple trademark filing in February.
The peripheral appears to take a lot of its design from the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, including the battery compartment that doubles as a riser stand. From the photos--if they are real--the peripheral is going to be Bluetooth only. The images show no sign of what the device's actual name will be, but IMO "Magic Slate" sounds a lot cooler than "Magic Trackpad." Here's hoping Steve agrees.TUAW"Magic Slate" to be unveiled today at WWDC? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 08:00:00 EST. TalkShoe - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Facebook - Apple - Voice over Internet ProtocolПереслать - Is AT&T moving up your iPhone upgrade date?
In anticipation of a new iPhone coming out soon, I visited my online AT&T account information last week to see when I'd be available for an upgrade. As of last Wednesday, the upgrade page showed that I'd be available for a new phone upgrade on 9/21/2010.
This morning we received a tip from TUAW reader Omar, who noted that his date had been moved up from late October of 2010 to "discounted equipment pricing when you sign a new 2-year commitment." That intrigued me, so I decided to check for myself.
Sure enough, the upgrade page for my AT&T account now shows the information seen above (account and phone number information deleted to protect the blogger). While we're not sure that this offer has been extended to all iPhone 3GS owners on AT&T's system, it's certainly showing up for a lot of people. Well, at least two of us...
Note that you don't have to sign into your AT&T online account info page. Just call *639# from your iPhone, and within less than a minute you'll receive a text message outlining your upgrade options.
How about you? Has AT&T changed your iPhone upgrade date? Let us know! As for me, this really makes the thought of getting a new iPhone HD attractive, even though I won't be able to (legally) tether my iPad through it.
Update: Our own Megan Lavey reports getting the alert message shown here.TUAWIs AT&T moving up your iPhone upgrade date? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 06 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - AT&T - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPadПереслать - One of tomorrow's announcements? iPhone HD (Update - it's a fake)
The fact that Apple will be announcing a new iPhone tomorrow is about as big a secret as the fact that there's a lot of oil in the Gulf of Mexico right now. What we didn't know until now was the name of the product, and if photos that were leaked this morning are any indication, the new device is going to be called the iPhone HD.
Pursuitist claimed to have photos from a "European insider at TBWA/Chiat/Day," the advertising agency for Apple worldwide. We'll send you to Pursuitist to view the photos in deference to their find, but we are showing you a photo (above) snapped inside of Moscone Center that displays the iPhone HD.
Pursuitist also notes that the device will be offered in all white and all black, although the Moscone photo appears to show the phone in a rainbow of colors. Other features include a front-facing camera with video chat and an upgrade to iChat, better battery life, a camera with higher resolution (and a flash), and advanced apps management and multitasking with iPhone OS 4.0.
Of course, this could be a last-minute "leak" to throw off all of us bloggers, but the consensus seems to be that the new iPhone will carry the iPhone HD moniker. Only during tomorrow's WWDC keynote will we know for sure.
Update: As numerous commenters are noting, the photo we're showing above has apparently been around for awhile. We receive so many faked images every day that it's sometimes hard to keep 'em straight. Sorry! However, you may want to still take a look at the Pursuitist post to see the gallery of photos that they're displaying, which may be just as fake.

Apple - Moscone Center - iPhone 3G - Unofficial Apple Weblog - WWDCПереслать - Pocket protector, meet your cousin: the iPad suit
Filed under: Odds and ends, iPad
Apple products often spawn ecosystems of product categories to facilitate their existence. The iPod and iPhone, for instance, gave birth to speaker docks, FM transmitters and protective cases. And now an ecosystem of products is materializing for the iPad: they include cases of all sorts, bean bag lap rests and, yes, clothes. Suits, to be specific.
Upscale Manhattan tailor Mohan's Tailor Shop, which boasts a clientele including Barry Bonds, Walt Frazier and Gary Carter, recently unveiled a custom made suit with a jacket pocket to accommodate the iPad (as reported in the WSJ). The impetus for it was the result of several customer requests for the feature; since its unveiling, the tailor says it has received about "100 calls and scheduled several dozen appointments with customers over the next several weeks" for a fitting.
Mohan's must be pulling off some magic of its own to fit Apple's "magical" device in a jacket pocket. At 1.6 pounds, I'm guessing the iPad may pull one side of the jacket lower than the other, thus necessitating some kind of counterbalance.
Personally, I'd rather just use a bag.
