- Study: iPhone 3GS more reliable than 3G
Filed under: iPhone
Poor little iPhone 3G. You are my first iPhone, my first smartphone, my first "I got it the day Apple released it" device. I love you so, and yes, I will miss you when you are gone, replaced by the shiny iPhone 4.
Apparently, I was one of the lucky ones.
First off, the iPhone 3G is forsaken by several of iOS 4's new features (wallpaper, multitasking, etc.). As an added bonus, warranty provider SquareTrade has released a report showing their repair rates on the iPhone 3G and how it compares to the 3GS. In short: the iPhone 3GS is more reliable than the 3G across the board. I'm guessing this is because the 3GS was an evolution of hardware, so they had a second "model year" to make refinements and changes.
However, the 3GS had more power and battery related issues in the first year than the 3G did, so it wasn't flat-out superior hardware. But the 3GS did have less overall trouble in year one the the same period in the 3G's history.

It's not hard getting ringtones on your iPhone. You certainly don't have to buy them. If, however, you'd like something a bit more customized, there is a nice app called AutoRingtone Pro Uncensored.
In a nutshell, it lets you pick out what the ringtone should say. It can be just an announcement about who is calling, like "Your friend Bob is calling from Las Vegas" or it could be a bit more insulting like "Your dumb buddy John from Indianapolis is on the phone". Basically, it takes what you've written and converts your text to speech in a voice you have selected.
Here's how it works: Type what you want the phone to say into a field. Then choose a voice, like British female, quiet whisper, American male and so on. You can also precede the message with a sound, and there are about 200 to choose from.
When you're ready, the instructions you've given are sent to a server (you must have internet access) where the ringtone is rendered. You retrieve it from a special website, and drag it into iTunes to get it on your iPhone. There are no fees or subscriptions, and you can make as many as you want.TUAWRingtones and a twist with AutoRingtone Pro Uncensored originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 20:00:00 EST. Apple - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iTunes - Speech synthesisПереслать - Checking in on the iPhone 4's video quality
Filed under: iPhone
When the camera in the iPhone 4 was first announced, I thought sadly of my Flip MinoHD, and how I might never need it again. If my phone can do solid HD video recording, why should I carry another camera around, small as it may be? But can Apple's phone really deliver solid HD quality in video recording?
Now that a few handsets are sneaking out to early reviewers and early preorders, we can find out. Engadget posted a video with their review, and you can see how it looks over there. Boing Boing's Xeni Jardin has been recording some video, and has shared it in full size over on that blog. And a few videos are starting to appear on YouTube as well, showing off just what the world looks like through the iPhone's video camera. You can see a bunch of iPhone 4 videos in the second half of this post.
So how did it turn out? Here's an old test of my Flip MinoHD (along with some sound issues -- ignore those) to compare. They look pretty close, to my eyes -- both cameras have that weird shuttering issue when showing quick motion, but both deliver solid color and quality HD video.
The iPhone, however, completely wins at macro shooting -- the Flip doesn't have any kind of adjustable focus, so closeup footage works much better on the iPhone. Combine that with the fact that the iPhone allows editing (with the iMovie app) and uploading directly from the phone, and it's bye-bye to the Flip. Unless I need the extra capacity to shoot a lot of HD video at one time, there's really no reason for me to carry both.TUAWChecking in on the iPhone 4's video quality originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 19:30:00 EST. Could this be the reason Apple is selling those rubber bumpers? Check out the video above and watch the iPhone 4's reception bars visibly drop. A magic trick? No, apparently skin and antennas are not BFF's. In fact, reception drops once your hands cover the metal bits of the iPhone 4. Metal bits which happen to be the antennas.
Plus, Gizmodo's ever-evolving crowdsourced review indicates the same issue with reception once your fleshy palms come in contact with the thing -- they've also got additional videos and testimonials about the issue in a separate post. Not great news for me and my Southern pals, since we're living in a soupy summer already. I'll test the reception in a few places around town tomorrow, hands and hands-free, to see what we discover.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in, especially Wes for the video.

Mac & iPhone-friendly memory service Evernote has announced this morning that it's launching in Japan -- a new subsidiary called Evernote Japan will be headquartered in Tokyo. While a Japanese version of Evernote launched a while ago, it's become the company's second largest market, taking up fifteen percent of the daily traffic on the service.
What this means for non-Japanese users is that the main app will now also support Japanese character recognition -- while handwritten characters still probably won't work with the service, we're told, printed Japanese characters can be read by the app from photographs and scans.
Additionally, the iOS 4.0 version of Evernote already came out on the App Store, featuring multitasking support, as well as improved synchronization. Both the iPad and iPhone versions of Evernote are free, of course, and you can sign up for the service on their website. Sounds like things are growing in leaps and bounds for the folks over at Evernote.TUAWEvernote launches in Japan, updated for iOS 4.0 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. Filed under: WWDC, iPhone, iPad
Corkulous is an iPad app that attempts to simulate a real cork board (similar to Kai Cherry's KorQBord, which we've mentioned before). You can add notes, labels and photos, and you can add boards inside of boards, which gives you almost infinitely nestable surface areas to play in.
Of all the bulletin board apps I've seen out there, Corkulous likely wins for the ease-of-use and power tools. It's a healthy mix on both sides that'll get you using it quickly, but gives just enough tools to get the job done. One thing they are working on is my #1 complaint: zooming. Being able to zoom out and see things in a mind map-style format would be very useful. Check the video above for a walkthrough of this app.
I was a big fan of the Todo app on my iPhone, as it was surprisingly versatile for a "simple" to-do app. Unfortunately, I didn't much like the Appigo Mac application used to sync because it was tied to one machine and didn't loop into any other services I used. I went to Things for a while, but when the iPad version of Todo emerged, I took another look.
In fact, I dusted off my old Toodledo account and jumped right back into what is now a very elegant end-to-end solution. Check out the video on the next page for a brief look at Todo. Note that Todo does a lot of great things, and we'll do a deeper dive into functionality later in the summer.TUAWWWDC App demos: Corkulous and Todo originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST. Which is worse: the heartbreak of knowing you're not getting an iPhone 4 by launch day, or receiving one early but slightly defective? I'm going with the latter, myself.
One report notes: "In the bottom 10% of the screen there are three blotches about the size of shirt buttons that discolor the screen a brown/yellow color." You can see a demonstration of that anomaly in the image to the right.
Seeing as there's quite a shortage of iPhone 4's right about now, if you're experiencing this issue and report it to Apple, it may be some time before you see a fresh, undamaged one in your hands. In fact, we're told Apple won't take tech support calls for the iPhone 4 until after its official release tomorrow.

ComiXology has done it again. First the Marvel Comics app was released, powered by the company's familiar engine, and then one recently for BOOM! Studios. Now DC Comics has finally released its own app, running on ComiXology's familiar interface.
So far the DC store's offerings are rather slim, especially when you take into account all of the titles the publisher handles. Most of the titles available are the more recent ones, such as Green Lantern: Rebirth and Frank Miller's Batman. One very awesome offering of note in the store: Neil Gaiman's Sandman; it's only one issue so far, but that's a much better start than zero.
ComiXology also has their own comics app and, just as the DC, Marvel and BOOM! apps are, it is free. Some of the same titles offered in the individual comics apps are available within the ComiXology app, though you can only get DC titles within their official app. [Update: ComiXology's official app was just updated with a specific DC Comics section.]

Well, that's interesting -- Apple has just posted an official statement on its site that says the white iPhone 4s have been "more challenging to manufacture than expected," and therefore won't be available until late July. No further statement is given, but it looks like if you were waiting until you get a white version of the new iPhone, you'll have to wait a little longer. That also explains why you couldn't preorder that color -- they weren't actually made yet.
At any rate, Apple says that the "more popular" black models are good to go, so those will be ready in the stores tomorrow. But of course if Apple has only half of the models in stock, that too could affect availability. We'll have to see how things go tomorrow morning.

Not long ago I talked about Starting from zero on the iPhone home screen, where I took everything off the first page of my iPhone screen (except for the camera).
With the release of iOS 4, I've been able to do something I like even better: one page for everything... well, almost everything. Let me first explain what isn't on the home screen, and why.
There are some apps that I can't delete but never use; I put them into a folder called "Never" on the second page. There is also a folder called "Seldom" for apps that I want to have on the iPhone but almost never use. Examples: apps that are there only to deliver push notifications such as myPhoneDesktop, or some type of functionality like TextExpander touch (I don't use TE directly, but I use some apps which have integrated TextExpander's SDK). All of that is tucked neatly away where I don't ever really have to see it except for when I install a new application.

As expected, the tool-minded folks at iFixit have torn down an iPhone 4 and posted its inner workings for all to see. There are plenty of juicy high-res photos and details here.
The story of how they got their phone is even more interesting than what they found inside. Kyle was all set to hop a flight to Japan and wait in line at the Ginza Apple Store when pre-ordered iPhones started arriving early, saving him the trip. He and the rest of the team got right to work.
First of all, let us give kudos to the iFixit team for a set of very well-done photos. I'd love to get a look at their studio setup some day. Highlights of the teardown include how easily accessible the battery is. By removing the two bottom screws, iFixit notes, the rear glass pops right off revealing the battery. It's not soldered into place and very easy to remove.

Just in time for the US to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup (sorry, Algeria), Elgato offers a special edition of its EyeTV software that does what just about everybody (who's watching the World Cup) wants: filter out those horrible plastic horns while you're watching the games live through your EyeTV hardware.
[If you're one of the people who actually went and downloaded an iPhone app to simulate the dang noise -- you know who you are -- knock it off. -Ed.]You can call me culturally insensitive, but it's a plain fact that the vuvuzelas create that constant, loud buzz behind the games, drowning out everything else like a massive swarm of angry bees. The EyeTV filter can be quickly switched off from a contextual menu in EyeTV.
The constant drone is at a pretty narrow frequency that you can
"duck"(notch filter) easily, and I assume that's what this edition of EyeTV is doing. If you have your EyeTV setup running on a TV, you suddenly have an even more enviable setup, and should immediately let all of your friends know that the next game is at your house.
I've been trying to pull this off myself with some line filters ... now I know I should have had my Mac mini media center up and running before the tournament started. The software is free to EyeTV users, but only available for a limited time (the length of the Cup). If you update your software right now, it will be there. It will be gone just as quickly with the next software update, but if you're an EyeTV user who'd like to be more annoyed with bad calls and disallowed goals than with the headache-inducing background noise, here's your answer. Catch a demo clip here.

IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - New York City - AppleStoreПереслать - iPhone grabs 20%+ smartphone market share in the land of Nokia
Finland is the home of mobile phone giant Nokia, but that's not keeping Apple from eating away at the Finnish market for smartphones.
Apple now has over 20% of the Finnish smartphone market. The numbers were disclosed on Sunday by Finnish carrier TeliaSonera, and published by YLE, the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
Although the content of the Google-translated YLE post is subject to interpretation, the gist appears to be that worldwide cell phone market leader Nokia (with about a 33% share of the total world market) is losing share more quickly in the smartphone sector. The iPhone is the current culprit, although Android-based systems are having a impact on Nokia's bottom line as well.
Nokia announced last week that revenue expectations will be lower, primarily because the company is not selling as many higher-priced smart phones as anticipated. Nokia still has 89% of the total mobile phone market in Finland, but as the Finnish people move from simpler phones to more functional smartphones, there is concern that the company will suffer from competition from Apple and other non-Finnish manufacturers.
The sales pressure from Apple on Nokia's home turf might explain the run of patent infringement lawsuits from Nokia during the last six months. TeliaSonera Sales Director Juha Koivuniemi believes that Nokia could benefit in the long run from the competition as a growing market for more expensive smartphones should increase margins for the Finnish phone manufacturer.
Thanks to Ilkka for the tip!

Thanks to Matthew for his pictures!
Update: Sorry, we dropped a paragraph in the editing process -- the firefighters and ambulance pictures, you ask? One of the line standers (according to Matt, a guy who was paid by another would-be buyer to hold his place in line) walked off unexpectedly and then collapsed in the middle of the street. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Handhelds - SmartphonesПереслать - Your Radio Shack iPhone 4 pre-order may be a late arrival
Filed under: iPhone
Add another mark up on the board tracking the major confusion going on regarding iPhone 4 pre-sales.
On its official Facebook page, Radio Shack has posted a statement to customers who recently placed pre-orders for the iPhone 4. In short, Radio Shack says that the store you placed your pre-order through may not get the new phones on launch day (tomorrow, June 24).
From the company's statement:
"In some cases, stores that took requests will not receive the iPhone 4 on June 24. We are sorry for any confusion and disappointment regarding this and will share future availability as soon as we have more information. We are making every effort to contact all customers who placed requests to let them know the status of phone availability."
They go on to say you should call the Radio Shack store where you placed your order to confirm it'll be there before you arrive, rather than having your hopes and dreams dashed when you get there. The question now is whether or not these late pre-order arrivals will be made available on the 29th of June. Since AT&T recently announced that it doesn't have enough iPhones to sell to walk-ins until then (reservations only at the company's retail outlets, so no point in lining up for a purchase if you didn't book ahead), it's looking like it may be a wait through the weekend for new purchases.
Of course, even if you did reserve a phone with AT&T, you still might have issues if you're among the unlucky buyers who had their orders unexpectedly cancelled (see this rather daunting Apple support thread).
Thanks Justin!

Apple's products have been increasingly targeted by thieves since those now-ubiquitous white earbuds first announced, "I'm carrying an expensive Apple doohickey! Mug me!" iPhones and iPods are often too hard for ne' er-do-wells to resist, and now iPads have joined their ranks.
The New York Post reports that the West Side Apple Store was robbed of iPads twice in the last week. In both instances, opportunistic thieves nabbed boxed iPads that were being unloaded from a delivery truck in broad daylight. Picking up five at a time while the driver was looking away, the crooks simply sprinted from the scene.
Of course, the iPad is a hot product and has sold well. Store employees noted that they've increased security, but monitoring shipments is tricky business, as they don't know when new iPads or other Apple products will arrive.
Keep your eyes peeled when walking down the street with your iDevice. And to the thieves: Surely there's a easier and less disruptive way to make a few hundred bucks?

They've stayed there longer than any other app, pulling in almost as many sales as there are iPhones to go around.

I probably don't need to explain SimCity to you; it's one of the most classic PC games of all time, and Electronic Arts released it for the iPhone a while go. It's the same game you've played before; you can mark out zones in your city, draw out roads and buildings, and slowly build up your population as a mayor, keeping your people happy, supplied with utilities, and within reasonable distance of work and play.
So, why are we spotlighting it today? Along with most of EA's iPhone titles, its price has dropped down to just 99 cents. So, if you haven't picked it up yet, now's the time to do so (and it'll give you something to play on your brand new iPhone this week). Other titles to check out at just a buck, if you haven't gotten them yet, include Need for Speed, Command and Conquer, FIFA 10, Madden 10, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and the classic Dragon's Lair. Filed under: Troubleshooting, iPhone
In case you are on the road to an iOS 4 update (and be careful), you might want to double check your work. Remember, first you have to update iTunes to 9.2, which will then allow you to download the iOS 4 update.
After I updated iTunes, I went in to make some changes to what I had synced and take off some podcasts that I don't listen to and video I don't really watch. After making changes and clicking apply, I got this error:
"iPhone cannot be synced. A duplicate filename was specified."
A bit of searching found other people having this issue, and the clear explanation at Apple Toolbox saved the day. As it turns out, the culprit is iToner from Ambrosia Software. I used it once a long time ago, and then I deleted the application without using my handy dandy AppZapper. As a result, it left behind a little file in my iTunes Plug-ins folder that I didn't realize was there.
I removed the file, and as if by magic, everything started working again. However, if FedEx isn't lying and my iPhone actually does show up tomorrow, it was a bit silly of me to jump through all of these hoops to run iOS 4 on my 3G ... for one day.TUAWiPhone sync problems after iTunes update traced to leftover plugin originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 07:30:00 EST. In a shocking turn of events, tonight's Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05 am Eastern on ABC) will be an unexpectedly 'very special' episode. As seen in the clip below, and as reported on the show's Facebook page, a freak power outage took out the studio cameras and production control room on Monday night -- leaving Jimmy to improvise a camera setup using his MacBook Pro instead. The laptop was under a cover, but despite the frequent on-set practice of masking the logo, you can clearly see the glowing Apple through the case back. The show ran a rerun last night, but the laptop-live show will air tonight.
Ahem.
We already know that Mac plugs and Apple references are business as usual for Pixar (in fact, there's a flat panel iMac prominently featured in Toy Story 3)...could a Mac-saves-the-show stunt be extra publicity for a teensy Apple product launch this week? [See below -- looks like "no, it isn't."] Not that the iPhone 4 particularly needs the help.
We'll try to get an answer out of ABC's press relations team in the morning to determine whether this is a true story of comic ingenuity.or a very elaborate Apple ad.Update: True/Slant had a reporter at the show, and they did in fact start quite late after power problems; Kimmel was apparently in no mood for these shenanigans. The New York Times posted a brief interview with Kimmel where he said the stunt was not an Apple promotion; in fact, he was concerned Apple might take the whole thing the wrong way.

"Now, the iPhone is no longer the undisputed king of app phones. In particular, the technically inclined may find greater flexibility and choice among its Android rivals, like the HTC Incredible and Evo. If what you care about, however, is size and shape, beauty and battery life, polish and pleasure, then the iPhone 4 is calling your name."
"We're not going to beat around the bush -- in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package.
Yes, there are still pain points that we want to see Apple fix, and yes, there are some amazing alternatives to the iPhone 4 out there. But when it comes to the total package -- fit and finish in both software and hardware, performance, app selection, and all of the little details that make a device like this what it is -- we think it's the cream of the current crop."TUAWiPhone 4 reviews roundup originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 23:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - App Store - iPhone 4Переслать - What to do with your old iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
As the 24th approaches (and the iPhone 4 along with it), many of us will soon own two iPhones. That begs the question: What to do with the "old" one? If you intend to sell it, check out our guide on doing it right.
Of course, many of you will opt to keep your current iPhone. In that case, here's a list of fun and useful things you can do with the "old" iPhone you once loved so dearly.
Continue to use it as a phone
There are a few ways to use your old iPhone as a phone once it's off a formal plan. For one, you can install Skype (or one of the many VoIP apps) for Wi-Fi based voice over IP calls. There are a few caveats to keep in mind with Skype, however. In order for the iPhone to maintain a Wi-Fi connection, the iPhone can't go to sleep, so keep it connected to a power source. Also, a call coming in via Skype won't ring, only vibrate. So take the case off and put it on a cookie sheet and let it rattle around like a coffee can full of bb's when a call comes in.
Alternatively, if you're the jailbreaking type, get yourself a H2O prepaid SIM card from Best Buy.
Keep reading for more fun ideas.

Last week I went and did it. I reserved the new iPhone. I'll pick it up Thursday morning. To keep the purchase price cheap, I sold my old one to Nextworth, one of a few firms that gives good deals on used electronics. I sent it in yesterday to make sure it got there in time, because they want it postmarked within a week of the price quote.
Two days, I thought. I can get along without my iPhone for 2 days, right? Silly me.
I hadn't realized how dependent I'd become on that little fella. I grabbed a bite out for lunch and realized that I had no New York Times to read while I dined. No emails. No using iCam to check the household parrot. I felt utterly and absolutely naked. Worse, I kept reaching up to my pocket to grab my non-existent phone. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iPhone 3G - Handhelds - SmartphonesПереслать - Gourmet magazine to return as iPad app
Filed under: iPad
There's been a lot of talk about the iPad saving print, but in this case it might actually happen. Gourmet magazine closed up shop late last year, but the publisher is getting ready to bring the mag back -- as an iPad app called Gourmet Live. The app will be free (with a few options for in-app payments), and will not only include articles and recipes from the magazine, but some online check-in functionality, and a few other fun tidbits. It's not something that could support a print magazine, sounds like, but for fans of the brand, it'll be a nice return.
Then again, maybe an app like this can support a magazine. Conde Nast, who owns both Gourmet and Wired (which is already making waves on the iPad), says that surprisingly, app sales have not only "surpassed our newsstand sales" but "has not cannibalized them either." That's intriguing -- all of the talk about the iPad saving print has focused on moving newsstand customers over to digital media, but a story like that hints that maybe digital media can still work as promotion for traditional newsstand publications. We'll have to see how this all plays out -- Gourmet Live is due out in the fall.TUAWGourmet magazine to return as iPad app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. IPad - Magazine - Gourmet - Wired - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - App demo: SonicPics
Filed under: iPhone
SonicPics does something I'd been wanting an app to do for a long time: create annotated slideshows with timing you direct. The demo speaks for itself, but I have to say that, after testing, it works as advertised. There could be some UI tweaks, but the act of creating slideshows that move to the next slide as you speak and when you want them to move is as simple as it gets.
First, you select the photos you want in a show, then you flip to each photo in sequence as you record your voice. The timing of each photo is done in sync to the audio, and that part is quite intuitive. Less intuitive are some of the other controls, but perhaps that's just my penchant for attractively-skinned interfaces.
SonicPics has uses beyond simple photo galleries. I could see using this to walk through a UI demo, for example. The app is flexible and can export .m4v files to YouTube or transfer to your Mac using WiFi. You can try the Lite version here, or buy the full version for $2.99.TUAWApp demo: SonicPics originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 17:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Remember that guy who's supposedly been camped out for a week or so, in order to be first in line for an iPhone 4? Well, it's a damn good thing he's in front of an Apple Store and not AT&T.
If you were one of the unlucky ones who didn't get into the AT&T pre-ordering window, then hoping you could simply wait in line later this week to buy an iPhone 4 in person, you may have more waiting to do. AT&T has released an official announcement stating that in-store iPhone 4 purchases won't be happening until June 29th, a week from today.
It looks like those lines at Apple and Best Buy just got a little bit longer. Then again, if you're under a corporate account, the AT&T store is pretty much your only option, which means you'll have to wait a few days. Good luck with that.

IPhone - Apple - AT&T - Best Buy - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - iPhone 3G users face upgrade question
Filed under: iPhone
I think somewhere Steve Jobs has flipped a switch that's quietly detonating all iPhone 3Gs. My trusty phone had decent battery time until a couple of days ago, when suddenly I had to scramble every few hours to find a power source. With all of my funds sunk into a move to Pennsylvania in a couple of weeks, an upgrade to the iPhone 4 just isn't possible at the moment, and a good many people are also facing the "upgrade or not?" question.
If you do have to hold onto your 3G for awhile, you have to deal with a secondary issue also confronted by original iPhone users last year with iPhone OS 3 -- is it worth upgrading to iOS 4?
Steve Jobs was upfront about the fact that not all of the new features will work on the 3G, but until yesterday we weren't quite sure exactly which features beyond multitasking would work or not. Engadget has a comprehensive list of what works and what doesn't.
What you get: Utilize folders, threaded mail, playlist creation/editing in iTunes, digital zoom (just don't expect good results), iBooks including PDF support, Photos, the Game Center (once activated), updated spell check, and Spotlight search.
What doesn't work: Multitasking, fast app switching, screen lock, wallpapers and Bluetooth keyboard support. You know, the good stuff.
If you're planning to upgrade your phone shortly, it's probably not worth the hassle of upgrading your 3G. If you do plan to hang onto your phone for a little while, it might be worth it just to gain some of the features listed above. I plan to upgrade my phone to take advantage of the mail changes, iBooks and folders. To those out there with your 3G iPhones, what do you plan to do with your phone?TUAWiPhone 3G users face upgrade question originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. Filed under: Gaming, iPhone, iPad
Here's two big updates to big games on the App Store lately -- first up, the much-loved Canabalt has now gone universal, so if you have an iPhone and an iPad and have already purchased the app, you can now play it in full resolution on your iPad. Of course, if you haven't bought the app yet, what are you waiting for? It's a classic one-button app, dripping with ambience, that's just $2.99 for both platforms.
Ngmoco has released their second big freemium title worldwide -- Godfinger is now available on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad. I got to play an early build of the app at GDC, and it basically combines Ngmoco's We Rule social and persistent functionality with some Pocket God-style gameplay. In other words, it'll likely be popular. I'm a little surprised the app didn't come out sooner -- Ngmoco is supposedly planning to release twenty new titles this year. If that's still true, they better get a move on.TUAWCanabalt now universal, Godfinger now available originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. Exercise apps are a highly personal decision. That's because there are so many ways apps can match -- or impede -- your style. Take Trailguru, for example. I've been using it for quite some time, happy with many little touches the application brings to the table. It's an application written by a person who obviously loves hiking and biking, and understands what tools need to be provided for the user.
Unfortunately creator Tim Park has not updated Trailguru since January 2009, and its age is starting to show. White it's a free application, Trailguru could easily have been monetized. It offers a dedicated website/wiki, excellent onboard algorithms, and a highly usable (albeit ugly as sin) interface.TUAWRoad tested: Runkeeper, Runmeter, 321Run and Trailguru originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Handhelds - Smartphones - AppleПереслать - Friday Favorite (on a Tuesday): OpenTerminal
Filed under: Friday Favorite
I'm aware that it's not, in fact, Friday. When we find an app that's not new, but is really useful to us, we usually save it for a Friday before we salivate all over it. I'm an impatient guy, though, so here's your Friday Favorite on a Tuesday. It's five o'clock somewhere.
This one's for the geeks. If you have no idea why you'd want to open the current finder folder in Terminal, you'll have little interest in this app, and I hope the rest of today's news is more thrilling for you. If, however, you get a little excited about a button on your Finder window that drops you into the UNIX subsystem, read on: I think I've found the best-of-breed.
OpenTerminal does what it says, it opens Terminal and cd's to the folder of the foreground Finder window. There are plenty of AppleScript or Automator-based buttons that will do this, and apps like cdto do the job in a very utilitarian fashion. It's pretty easy to craft your own, too, but this free utility packs a few extra tricks.

AppleScript - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Automator - Apple - FinderПереслать - Apple sells 3 million iPads in first 80 days
Filed under: iPad
The retail madness continues; Apple reported this morning that it has sold 3 million iPads in 80 days. You'll remember that the first million were sold within 28 days of the US launch, and that 2 million had found owners in "less than 60 days." Let's assume the second million sold within 31 days of the first batch. That would put the 2 million mark at 59 days.
If 2 million were sold within 59 days, the third million went out the door in 21 days, meaning the pace had actually picked up. Of course, the the international release introduced a huge new pool of potential customers, but that doesn't detract from how impressive these numbers are.
The release also cites "over 11,000 apps" built specifically for the iPad, which is up from the 8,500 mark as of WWDC 2010.
I'm really looking forward to the financial conference call that includes iPad and iPhone 4 numbers. IPad - IPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - WWDCПереслать - International keyboard changes in iOS 4
Filed under: iPhone
This week we're exploring iOS 4 for hidden gems. We received two tips this morning about international keyboards that were both useful and fun. The first makes switching between keyboards much easier.
To enable international keyboards, select Keyboards from the general settings. Tap International Keyboards and then Add New Keyboard. Once you've made your selection, you'll notice a globe icon next to your keyboard's spacebar. In iPhone OS 3.1.3, you could tap that icon to switch from one keyboard to the next. It was kind of a hassle for those with several keyboards enabled.
The iPad introduced a popup menu to the globe icon with OS 3.2 (at right), which the iPhone inherited with iOS 4.0. Now you can simply press and hold to get a list of all enabled keyboards and make your selection.
The other tip is about kaomoji, those pesky little "face letters" that the kids are so into. iOS 4 has made them even easier to use. With a Japanese keyboard enabled, hit the "123" button and you'll see an emoticons key in the corner. Tap it to bring up a list of options. There's a screenshot of this after the break. Enjoy!
[Thanks, Bryan!]

iPhone - Apple - IPad - IPhone OS - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - More great iPad cases from Targus
Filed under: iPad
Now that the iPad has been on the market for three months, many vendors are coming to market with protection for the device. We've seen everything from hard shell cases to expensive leather sleeves, and even cases that kill germs (link to last post about iSkin case).
When many people think about Apple accessories, they think of Targus, a company that has been in the business of making cases, keyboards, mice, and other accessory products for many years. Now Targus has come to market with four new cases for iPad that offer functionality, style, and color. The Z-Case, Truss, Targus Leather and Wallet Style cases are all available now at Targus dealers.
The Z-case (US$54.99, see photo at right) comes in black, orange, and mustard and features a hard-shell body with a leather exterior. The soft interior liner contrasts with the exterior for an attractive look. For those of you who may still be waiting for an Apple iPad case, the Truss ($49.99, see photo below), is similar in functionality to the Apple case, but has a leather exterior in brown or black with a soft liner.
Two more cases, the Targus Leather Sleeve ($49.99) and the Wallet Style Case ($54.99), also bring the class of leather to the lineup. The Sleeve comes only in black top-grain leather with a soft twill interior, while the Wallet Style Case comes in black and stylish red leather, and has a number of interior pockets for photos, cards, and notes.
Targus was a bit late to the iPad case and sleeve party with these new models, but they'll certainly bring the typical Targus quality and functionality to the iPad accessory market.TUAWMore great iPad cases from Targus originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 11:00:00 EST. Unofficial Apple Weblog - Leather - IPad - Business - AppleПереслать - WWDC 2010: Illusion Labs' Foosball HD
Filed under: iPhone, App Store
I finally got to meet up with the guys from Illusion Labs at WWDC last week. I've been writing about their apps for a little while (their most popular title is Touchgrind, but I really enjoyed Sway as well), so it was great to meet them in person and talk about what they've been up to on the App Store.
Their latest app is Foosball HD, a very well-polished and intuitive foosball table for the iPad. It's their first original iPad venture (they brought Labyrinth and Touchgrind over right at launch), and they said that foosball was an idea that vibed well with their theme of making metaphorical games -- "we make more simulators than games," they told me. The app is clean and easy to play, and there are even little touches like projected shadows below the figures and some physics on the ball that Illusion was very proud to implement. The app's available now for US$2.99 as an introductory price.
We also talked about social gaming networks, both third-party networks and Apple's Game Center. The developers said that they'd never been interested in adding third-party code to their apps, just because it usually required that they split branding, and that they couldn't integrate the UI in a way that appealed to them. They did admit that they were "more likely to use Apple's Game Center," but even so, their ideal solution is probably just to build something in-house rather than rely on anyone else.
Finally, we chatted about handset compatibility, and how they'll react to yesterday's iOS 4.0 release. At the time we talked, they hadn't determined what to do yet, but they said that yes, they would probably end up dropping support for the first generation iPhone and iPod touch, just because it wasn't worth the trouble. Especially with the free updates, Illusion says it's a reasonable expectation for users to be upgraded from the original version. Again, very good to speak with them -- we'll look for more from this standout iOS developer in the future.TUAWWWDC 2010: Illusion Labs' Foosball HD originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 10:00:00 EST. We've received a flood of overnight tips from excited readers today telling them that that their iPhone 4 orders will be arriving early. Apple is apparently sending out confirmation emails to customers who placed their orders on the 15th, stating that their phones are scheduled to arrive on June 23rd, not the 24th as originally promised (see above).
If your new iPhone does indeed arrive on the 23rd, please let us know.
[There is an odd grammatical error in the email, "you can check the FedEx website the morning of the June 23rd" -- we have no reason to believe this is anything but a legit Apple Store email at this point, but if you have any worries that this may be a phishing attempt, you can simply skip the link in the email and go to http://store.apple.com/ in a browser to check your order status.]TUAWiPhone 4 arriving early for some originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 08:45:00 EST. Fare City: Taxi Mania is an excellent little line drawing game that has you directing taxis around a city, picking up fares and dropping them off as quickly as you can, all while trying to keep cabs from hitting each other. The game's just as addictive as Flight Control, but instead of just guiding planes into home base, you're constantly juggling cabs and fares for as long as you can.
And the game has just been updated to version 2.0, adding a new game mode called Crazy Cabs and new in-game tutorial to the already very polished, full-featured title. There's also a free version out to try now, but honestly, with the paid version currently 50% off at just 99 cents, there's really no reason to avoid it. Filed under: iPhone
In a strange twist with what appears to be a security issue, users of Google Apps who set up their accounts using the Microsoft Exchange settings (aka ActiveSync) may find that their iPhones have been set to auto-lock in one minute.
I confirmed this after reading a comment from TUAW reader BigB who mentioned it in another post. Apparently this is due to the security certificates that Google uses with its Exchange servers. The servers can force security options on compatible devices, which your iPhone becomes once it is running iOS 4.
To be clear: if you have a regular Gmail account and set it up using Exchange, this auto-lock requirement will not be triggered. But if you use Google Apps for your personal domain, it may.
Also: Google Apps users have also reported problems setting up their iOS 4 devices. Mine kept telling me that the server (m.google.com) was unable to be verified even if you followed the instructions.
Since I knew my information was correct, I went ahead and saved it. Email began syncing not long afterwards, but apparently the issue is still cropping up intermittently for some users.TUAWGoogle Apps phone-lock issues with iOS 4 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 23:00:00 EST.
