- Project Gutenberg ebooks will be included in the iBookstore for free
Filed under: iPad
Two days ago we told you that Project Gutenberg's ebooks should be compatible with the iPad, and we even showed you some ways to get around any possible restrictions Apple could have imposed on the vast catalog of free ebooks. Well, it looks like those workarounds won't be necessary, because according to appadvice, the entire Project Gutenberg catalog will be offered for free from the iBookstore.
Project Gutenberg has a library of over 30,000 books online, with classic titles from all walks of literature. Apple's not only supporting access to this vast library of works, they're officially offering it from within their own store, for free. This is a pretty classy move from Apple, and one that makes the iPad a very attractive purchase for anyone interested in reading the classics without shelling out a whole lot of money for them.TUAWProject Gutenberg ebooks will be included in the iBookstore for free originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 01:00:00 EST. AppStore - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - AppleПереслать - WSJ on the iPad will be $17.99 a month
Filed under: iPad
Engadget reports that "people familiar with the matter" have stated The Wall Street Journal will be available on the iPad for a $17.99 a month subscription fee. The source comes from the Journal itself, so it's a pretty good bet this is accurate info. Engadget notes that the iPad subscription price is about $11 a month less than the subscription fee for the paper version of the Journal, but the iPad version of the Journal will still be ad-supported via advertisers like Coca-Cola and FedEx.
A few other magazines are leaking pricing info, as well. Esquire plans to offer an ad-free, downloadable format of its April issue for $2.99, $2 less than the paper version's price. Interestingly, the magazine will also be including five free music videos with the issue.
Although the electronic version of the Journal is well below the price of the newspaper version, $18 a month still seems pretty steep to me. Then again, I've spent the past ten years getting almost all of my news for free online, so I'm probably not their target demographic anyway.
At least The Wall Street Journal has a better pricing scheme for its electronic content than some other content providers; Men's Health is reportedly going to charge the same $4.99 price for an iPad issue as they charge for the print version. If Men's Health offered the iPad version of their issues ad-free for the same price that would be one thing, but its iPad version is both ad-supported and the same price as newsstand issues. This seems like a pretty boneheaded move on their part, but sadly, it's one that I predict many other publishers will make over the coming months until they notice how dismal their sales are.

Wall Street Journal - IPad - Magazine - mens health - Coca-ColaПереслать - Survey: Working on the go will be top iPad use case
Filed under: iPad
A new survey by Sybase says that 2,443 of adults with a mobile phone, when polled, claim that their number one use case for an iPad would be working while out and about. 52.3% of those polled say they would work from a device like the iPad, 48.2% said they would use it to watch movies and television, and 35.4% said that they would use it to play games. Those are some interesting numbers -- we've already heard that a full third of potential iPad users would use it to read books (though of course for some people, reading books would be considered work), and we've even heard that 44% of the iPhone apps being tested so far are actually games.
So basically, no one has any idea what we'll be doing with our iPads when we actually get them. No, my guess is that people suspect that they will use an iPad for working, but in practice, they'll use it more for what Apple expects them to use it for: games and consuming media. It could also be that "work" apps take longer to develop on the iPad, which would explain why we're seeing games made when most users believe they'll be working. But of course, we'll have to see -- it's possible that we may not know the main use for the iPad yet, as even Apple seems to be torn on what the real focus of the computer will be.

iPhone - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - SybaseПереслать - ScreenSharingMenulet hits 2.0
Filed under: Cool tools
ScreenSharingMenulet is a free (donations requested) program which I've mentioned before that runs in your menu bar and gives you access to computers for quick access to screen sharing.
My success with Back To My Mac was "spotty" at best until I started using the DynDNS service, port forwarding, and DHCP Reservations to get 100% reliable screen sharing sessions between my home and work computers. (It's not nearly as complicated as it sounds. Most of it is just one-time configuration which will then make things easier every time you do it in the future.) This does not require a subscription to MobileMe or involve any cost.
DynDNS hosts don't appear in the Finder like Back To My Mac hosts do, which is where ScreemSharingMenulet comes in. Click on the menu bar icon, type in the DynDNS hostname (check the box to "Add to My Computers"), and voilà! You're connected as easily as you always thought Back To My Mac would be, but never was.
ScreemSharingMenulet has just released a new version 2.0 which has preferences to show/hide Back to My Mac Hosts and show/hide local IP addresses. It also fixes a few bugs. One change that people may not like as much is the removal of the "Recent Hosts" submenu, but frequently contacted hosts can easily be added to the "My Computers" menu by checking a box when initiating the connection. A few other minor changes were also made.
Even if Back To My Mac worked consistently and reliably, I would still prefer ScreenSharingMenulet for initiating the connection because it's easier and faster to reach from my menu bar than going through Finder.TUAWScreenSharingMenulet hits 2.0 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. Filed under: Hardware
With all of the netbook hoopla, it's worth remembering that Apple really hasn't filled the need for a full-featured, really small laptop. With Steve Jobs saying that they simply can't build a cheap netbook without sacrificing quality, Mac lovers who still want one are left, quite literally, to their own devices.
myMacNetbook.com is here to help -- it has all of the latest news about getting OS X to run on a netbook in one place. It also has a valuable chart that shows you which netbooks work best with OS X, and links to the software that you will need to use in order to get a netbook up and running with our favorite operating system, and valuable, step-by-step directions for turning a netbook into your OS X dream machine.
The compatibility chart assumes that you want to install Snow Leopard, and shows you which features will and won't work on a particular piece of hardware. As of today, it looks like there are 10 different netbooks that are completely happy with an OS X install. I'll probably hold out for generation 2 of the iPad, even though I am very tempted to buy one now. On the other hand, getting something smaller than my MacBook Pro that does everything that I need it to do, and for a lower or similar cost, sounds pretty sweet too.
How many of you have already gone with an OS X netbook, or are planning to go that direction rather than getting the iPad?

We've mentioned Comic Zeal on the site here before -- it's an iPhone app that allows you to read comic book .cbr files on your iPhone. Of course, it's exactly the kind of app that you'd hope to bring itself right on over to the iPad, and that's exactly what developer Bitolithic has done -- they're provided an excellent preview of the Comic Zeal iPad app over on their blog. It looks great -- there's a full-screen view, of course, but the navigation has been tweaked, and there's no real separation any more between selecting a book and seeing it. While the iPhone's smaller screen meant they had to compartmentalize those two functions, the bigger iPad screen means they can just put a pop-up in and do the whole thing all together.
Also interesting to note is that they've placed controls at the top of the screen rather than at the bottom -- they say that when the iPad is sitting in your lap, it's awkward to hit buttons at the bottom as you usually do on the iPhone. And this version will be called Comic Zeal 4, not Comic Zeal iPad or HD, because eventually most of the features in this version will find their way back to the iPhone version as well. Comic Zeal looks like a great comic reading solution on the iPad, and it's awesome to finally see some apps.TUAWComic Zeal 4 for the iPad previewed originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 18:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Michael Wolf at GigaOm has put together an interesting report in which he believes that the tablet app market will grow to $8 billion annually by 2015. That's a far cry from the $183 million tablet app market he predicts for 2010. Wolf believes that downloads of paid apps will be significantly higher for tablets than for smartphones. In 2011, he believes 179 million paid apps will be downloaded. By 2013 he expects that number will reach 630 million. He also believes that downloads of tablet apps (paid, free, and ad-supported) will reach 12 billion by 2015, up from 272 million in 2010.
Wolf is quick to point out that that $8 billion app market is only for paid apps on tablets -- he doesn't include apps that monetize in different ways like advertising, paid content subscriptions, or content downloads. While Wolf sees Apple leading the tablet market he also sees Microsoft and Google sharing in that market and believes that by 2015 the tablet market will be a 43-million-unit-per-year industry. With all the hype surrounding the iPad and tablets in general, the media's constant use of the phrase "gold rush" to describe the coming iPad app market seem increasingly spot on.TUAWTablet apps to be a $8 billion dollar industry? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 17:00:00 EST. Digg released its official iPhone app this morning, and after playing with it for a little while, I can tell you that it does what it says on the box: it will let you browse, interact, and comment on the popular news aggregator without many problems (there was one major issue -- I'll mention it in a second). However, in general, the app isn't all that different from the interface they released a while back. Sure, there are a few app-y touches, but mostly the app just feels like a Digg-specific browser. I suppose that's what they were going for.
The app works pretty easily -- you can dive in and view the top, recent, or upcoming stories in any of Digg's categories, and clicking on each headline sends you to an in-app browser with the page displayed (as best it can be -- of course Flash movies don't work, and lots of the really popular links on Digg are murdered via bandwidth already). At the bottom of each page, you'll find buttons to like or dislike the story (sorry, Digg or Bury), a button to save the story if you're logged in to your Digg account, and the option to share the link. When you select the share option, you can send it off to the iPhone's clipboard, Twitter, Facebook, or Email.TUAWTUAW First Look: Digg's iPhone app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 15:30:00 EST. While I was on my recent vacation, I got into a discussion with a fellow cruiser who was going to wait for the 3G model before taking the iPad plunge (as Macworld's Jason Snell suggested). He wanted to know why I wasn't waiting, so I gave him the following reasons:
1) I want to gloat. Yep, while those other people are waiting another month to pay an additional US$130 to get their 3G iPads, I'm going to have a month to play with my iPad, watch movies, see how well it works when blogging or writing, and otherwise just show off with the damned thing. Woo-hoooo! When it comes to Apple technology, I always demand the latest and greatest, and the iPad is no exception. In fact, I haven't been this excited about a new Apple product since 1993 when the Newton MessagePad hit the streets.

Filed under: Software, Features, Steve Jobs, Bad Apple, Apple, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad
If the supposed note from El Steve-o is to be believed, the iPhone is getting a unified mailbox at some future date. Don't you wonder what Apple was thinking when it wasn't in the original iPhone plan?
In Mac OS X, I like seeing all of my email on one page, and with a quick click I can look at any email account segregated from the others -- easy peezy.
You would have thought that the famous Apple GUI designers would apply the same logic to the iPhone, but for more than two years I've had to really struggle to see what is coming in on 3 different accounts. I'm tapping more than the Titanic's radio operator just to see what email I have.
I hope the fix comes soon, and that it winds up on the iPad as well. The lack of a unified or universal mailbox is one of those strange Apple decisions that is hard to understand. The lack of cut, copy, and paste was another seemingly bone-headed choice that Apple finally got right. Now Microsoft seems to be drinking the same kool-aid with its upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS. The company says no copy/paste will be in the phone OS, and they're telling users they don't really need it anyway. Sure.
Apple makes a lot of great choices and we love Apple products, but every so often they seem to miss a big feature. After a lot of bad feelings from customers, they finally make it right. Usually. Sometimes. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for that unified inbox, and switching frantically between mail accounts. Grrrrr.
Can you think of some other big missing items? A camera in the iPad comes to mind...TUAWA unified mailbox coming to the iPhone -- what a concept! originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 14:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - Apple - Steve Jobs - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPadПереслать - Found footage: 1993 Steve Jobs interview on Paul Rand
Filed under: Apple History
Paul Rand may not be a familiar name or face to many, but he created the public face of many of the world's most well-known companies. ABC Television, IBM, UPS and NeXT are a few of the many companies that Rand designed a logo for.
While Rand didn't design the current Apple logo (which is a derivative of the multicolored Apple logo designed by Rob Janoff), his work is well respected in Apple circles. When Apple launched its "Think Different" campaign, it chose to feature Paul Rand on a print ad.
Steve Jobs spoke of his admiration of Rand during a 1993 interview with Doug Evans and Alan Pottasch. To give some perspective, 1993 saw the changing of the guard at Apple from John Sculley to Michael Spindler. Jobs was CEO of NeXT at the time, which was busy porting the NeXTSTEP operating system for x86 processors.
Known for his attention to detail and treating Apple employees as "artists" -- and verbally berating them if their work didn't meet his expectations -- Jobs called Paul Rand "a gem." "[Paul is] a pure artist that is very astute at solving business problems," Jobs said in the interview.
But the most interesting moment of the interview comes when Jobs is asked his opinion on Rand's work. Jobs spoke of the emotional, yet intellectual nature of Paul Rand's designs. "When you scratch the surface of any of his work, you find out the depth of the intellectual problem solving that's taken place."
While this statement took place 17 years ago, during which Jobs was away from Apple, it also reflects the ideal of Apple's current products. While the industrial design of Apple hardware will draw the attention of many, this design is shaped by the software beneath it and the anticipated interaction the user has with it.
Paul Rand died in 1996, three years after this interview. However, his legacy lives on, as many of the timeless logos he's designed continue in existence today.

Steve Jobs - Apple - NeXT - Unofficial Apple Weblog - John SculleyПереслать - CBS planning HTML5 videos for iPad compatibility?
A few readers have sent up tips about odd "iPad - test" video links showing up on CBS.com. MacRumors did some digging and discovered that if you click on the iPad-test links in your computer's browser, you'll be taken to the normal Flash versions of the video. However if you're on the iPad SDK Simulator or spoof your browser's User-Agent to impersonate an iPad, you're sent to a HTML5 version of the video.
MacRumors notes that the HTML5 version of the videos doesn't work yet, but there does seem to be full screen support and the CSS fills reference HTML5 and have a number of specific "webkit" calls.
Many, including Steve Jobs, see HTML5 as the successor to Flash -- and things aren't looking too hot for the Adobe plugin's continued dominance. In January Google launched a HTML5 Youtube beta site followed by Virgin America announcing earlier this month that they dumped Flash from their website because the iPhone doesn't support it. Of course, HTML5/iPad support doesn't mean CBS is ditching Flash. They could be following in the footsteps of NPR and the Wall Street Journal and creating two different websites -- one Flash-free -- for users of the iPad. Whatever the case, it's nice to see CBS planning for the iPad and one hopes the other major networks will follow suit.TUAWCBS planning HTML5 videos for iPad compatibility? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - CBS - Steve Jobs - HTML5Переслать - The #1 thing I want in the next iPhone: support for 900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA
Filed under: iPhone
The next iPhone is widely expected to debut sometime in the next few months, most likely at WWDC, which is rumored to kick off on June 28. Even though that's only a hair over three months away, so far there's been very little revealed about the next iteration of the iPhone either in terms of its appearance or likely features.
Apple can put a better camera in it, add more capacity, a better processor, a front-facing camera for videoconferencing, and a dozen other things -- but quite honestly, I'd be perfectly happy if none of that made it into the next-gen iPhone so long as one feature does find its way in: support for 900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA.
The iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as the forthcoming iPad, all contain 3G antenna/chipsets that support UMTS/HSDPA at 850, 1900, and 2100 MHz. UMTS/HSDPA is an alphabet-soup way of referring to the GSM flavors of 3G. In other words, high-speed broadband works at those frequencies, and only those frequencies. If high-speed broadband isn't available at those frequencies, the iPhone will fall back to GSM/EDGE at 850, 900, 1800, or 1900 MHz.
For those of you living in the US and on AT&T, the iPhone's 3G frequency range is especially tailored for your use. Most of AT&T's 3G network runs on 850 MHz, while T-Mobile runs at 1700 MHz -- this is why the iPhone only works at EDGE speeds with T-Mobile, because the iPhone's 3G chipset isn't tailored for the 1700 MHz band.
3G networks in many other areas of the world, including portions of Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand function at 900 MHz. This creates several problems for users in those regions; read on to find out why.TUAWThe #1 thing I want in the next iPhone: support for 900 MHz UMTS/HSDPA originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 11:00:00 EST. Ever since Apple rolled out web previews for iTunes links several months ago, I've been meaning to find a way to disable those pages from automatically opening iTunes, which I don't usually have running. <del>These pages have a "View in iTunes" link already, so if I want to open iTunes, it's easy enough to do manually.</del> (Update: A commenter correctly notes that these links do not seem to work after making this change. You will have to open/search iTunes manually.) The Apple Blog posted some instructions for doing this, but that method didn't seem to always work for me. Some links still opened iTunes. My best guess is that Apple uses a variety of methods of opening these links, but The Apple Blog's instructions were only addressing one.
Then I remembered RCDefaultApp from Rubicode, a freeware application which allows you to easily set which application will open files based on filename extension (such as the ".doc" in "review.doc") or by the protocol in a URL, such as http:// or itms://.
I went into the URLs section of RCDefaultApp (which is a preference pane), and disabled the following protocols:- itms:// (this seems to be the most prevalent in my limited testing)
- itunes://

AAPL has been hitting new highs just about every day. Yesterday the stock price hit an intra-day high of $230.20, a lofty height indeed. We pointed out earlier that Apple now has the fourth largest market cap of any publicly traded domestic company, so maybe it's time to revisit the question of Apple declaring dividends on its stock.
Apple has not declared a dividend since December of 1995. After the last shareholder meeting, Steve Jobs stated that the money was best left in the bank so there would be no question of loans if something big was to be bought. "The cash in the bank gives us tremendous flexibility," explained Steve.
The Motley Fool makes an interesting case in favor of dividends. Apple has no history of massive acquisitions, and keeping $40 billion around for just that reason sounds less than reasonable. A case is also made for keeping the money as preparation for the next big recession. This doesn't seem to hold much water, however, since analysts predict that Apple will grow by 18% per year for the next five years. That should provide more than enough cash, predicting that Apple will report net income of around $21 billion in 2014.
Of course, predictions are often wrong, but Apple has been excellent when it comes to beating expected earnings numbers for some time. 77% of informal Motley Fool poll respondents think that Apple should declare dividends. After all, that cash is really owned by the stockholders and it seems that a good number of them would like to get some of it back.

Final Cut Studio - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Software Update Apple - Mac OS XПереслать - AutoSmiley uses the iSight to turn your face into an emoticon
Filed under: Humor
This one's a little silly but I still really like it -- AutoSmiley is a public domain app that runs in the background while you work, quietly monitoring your iSight's camera input. Whenever it detects a smiling face on the camera (so any time you smile while working), it will send a ":)" emoticon to the keyboard. It's probably not quite practical, as there are a lot of times when you might smile but don't want to actually send an emoticon.
I do like the idea that it turns emoticons into real expressions of emotion. When you actually see a ":)" or an "lol" in someone's IM or email, you never really know if they've actually smiled or laughed at what you've typed earlier, and a program like this puts a little more power behind the colon and parenthesis. As the app's description says, using it can go a little farther towards "enforcing honesty in your online communication." The app is a free download for US, UK, and NL keyboards on the Mac.
The app was featured on Wednesday's TUAW TV Live, which you can watch to see AutoSmiley in action.TUAWAutoSmiley uses the iSight to turn your face into an emoticon originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 25 Mar 2010 07:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
