- BuzzVoice comes to the iPad
Back in October we wrote a very positive review of the impressive BuzzVoice app for the iPhone and iPod touch. BuzzVoice reads you stories from over 1500 blogs and plays them back in various ways. The playback sound amazingly natural allowing you to choose a male or female voice, or both.
You can create a personalized Playlist or BuzzCast. A Playlist is built by choosing the sources that you are most interested in, and they appear in the app along with a general category. So if you wanted to hear the latest stories from TUAW, you'd put it in your Playlist and tap the TUAW topic.
A BuzzCast is a bit different. It's an app generated podcast. You decide on the content and each day it will appear in your iTunes library allowing you to hear it on any iPod, iPhone (within the app), or even on your computer. BuzzCasts can be as long as 30 minutes long.
Here's the problem: creating a BuzzCast or Playlist required you to log onto the BuzzVoice site to choose your favorite content. To get the full function of the app, you needed a computer nearby, and were required to jump back and forth between the computer and the app.
Here's the solution: this complexity is going away courtesy of the BuzzVoice iPad app currently under testing. The full functionality of the web site will be built into the new app.TUAWBuzzVoice comes to the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - iPodПереслать - No more reservations available for iPad launch day
Filed under: iPad
If you were planning on reserving an iPad for pickup at an Apple Store on April 3rd, you're out of luck.
Reservations, both in-store and online, ended on Friday. According to TUAW reader Travis, who sent us the tip early Saturday, an Apple sales associate mentioned told him Apple had to shut down reservations since they have no product left between pre-orders and reservations that have already been made. Apparently Apple believes that they may get a 10% bump in extra product at the stores for launch day, but that may be wishful thinking.
For those of you who were procrastinating, your best bet at getting an iPad in the near future may be to show up at an Apple Store just before 3 PM on April 3rd. At that point in time, the stores will release any iPads that were reserved, but not picked up. Your other alternative is to make an online order for an iPad for delivery by April 12th.

IPad - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleStore - SalesПереслать - Slim majority of users would rather have a netbook or laptop over an iPad
Filed under: iPad
At least that's the word from an NPD survey that says among 18-34 year olds, a key iPad demograhpic, 51% would rather have a more conventional portable than the Apple iPad. Even among current Apple product owners 44% would prefer a more functional computer like a MacBook over an iPad.
"The most interested potential iPad customers see it primarily as a music device, or for its internet access capabilities," said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "Considering what people are planning to use the iPad for, it's not hard to understand why people who have these capabilities on other devices, such as the iPod Touch or a notebook/netbook, may not want to spend $500 or more on a similar device. This points to the need for Apple to close the content deals that focus the iPad on what is likely to be its best long-range value proposition around high quality media consumption."
Surveys like this, before a product even shows up in the market, don't mean a hell of a lot, but I do think many Apple users would like to see something more powerful in a smaller package. We had a pretty good discussion of this the other day when many of our users told about the good and the bad of using a Dell or other netbooks and converting them to OS X based devices.
It's clear that Apple is going to sell an awful lot of iPads over the next few weeks. As our readers are Apple-centric, what are your views? Ready to pull the trigger on an iPad?

With just one week left until iPad Saturday, we're starting to see some amazing software coming out. One of the more intriguing games that we've seen is The Pinball for iPad from Gameprom.
Pinball fanatics will likely find this app to be a vast improvement over the games found on the iPhone platform, with a larger playing field, increased game detail, and more realistic game play. The Pinball for iPad combines three of Gameprom's iPhone pinball games -- Jungle Style Pinball, The Deep Pinball and Wild West Pinball -- into one tasty looking app.
Some of the features of The Pinball include:- Different camera modes: stable picture of the "whole table" and agile camera, which follows the ball in the game with automatic zoom in significant places
- Realistic physics
- Camera tilt
- Anaglyptographic (3D) stereo effect
- Local and global high scores
- 3-ball multiball mode
- Ability to shake the pinball table, with an acceleration indicator so you don't "tilt"

Many people making pre-orders or reservations for iPads were concerned when the iPad Camera Connection Kit didn't show up on the Apple site as available for order. Never fear, for the the US$29 kit is now listed on Apple's website as shipping in late April.
No explanation was given for the absence of the Camera Connection Kit in the original list of iPad accessories, although the company may have held back the SD and USB connectors that make up the kit for component quality testing.
Among the other accessories for the iPad, the VGA Adapter and Standard Dock will be available on April 3rd and the iPad case is scheduled for mid-April. The Keyboard Dock is showing late April availability, while the iPad 10W USB Power Adapters won't make it to your home or office until sometime in May.

Jesse Rosten, a director in Northern California, asked himself what a magazine cover on the iPad should look like. He came up with the incredibly sweet Sunset Magazine mock up above. Jesse notes that until now, books and magazines have been traditionally portrait in orientation and film and TV has been landscape in orientation. He says with the iPad there's no longer a strict landscape limitation for video. "Maybe you want your vid to appear full screen in portrait mode? Maybe you need a long, tall video banner-ad on the side of a digital magazine page? I think we're going to start seeing a lot more vertically shot video soon," Jesse wrote on his website. Click on over to his site to see some more incredible vertical footage and to read about the setup he used to capture his images.TUAWWhat will iPad magazine covers look like? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 17:00:00 EST. Filed under: Gaming
Several readers tipped us off yesterday that Valve has put the call out to Mac beta testers. To be considered for the Steam for Mac beta you simply need to go to the Mac beta page and log in using your Steam account user name and password. If you don't have one, you can quickly register. Once logged in, you'll be shown a questionnaire form detailing what kind and how many Macs you own, if you own a PC or gaming console, and how many games you've purchased in the last twelve months. After that, you'll need to upload a text file of your System Profile information so they can get a complete idea of your Mac setup.
"We are going to conduct a closed beta for testing of the Mac client and Mac versions of Valve games," Valve wrote on its website. "Participants will be selected to provide broad coverage of testing criteria. Please be honest in your answers as we need to test all types of users, systems, and software configurations."
Valve first teased about Mac games coming to Steam in a series of Apple ad-inspired images at the beginning of March with the official announcement just days later. Steam for Mac is a huge win for the Apple platform as gaming on the Mac has always been seen as one of the Mac's weakest links. Steam for Mac will be released in April.TUAWValve calls for Steam for Mac beta testers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 16:00:00 EST. Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Steam - Macintosh - Steam for MacПереслать - Explicit App Store categories appear, disappear
Filed under: App Store
Yesterday MacStories.net found two empty category placeholders for the App Store: "Top Explicit Paid Software" and "Top Explicit iPad Software". If you follow those two links now, you'll just be taken to blank pages in the iTunes App Store. Seems Apple was a little embarrassed in letting those slip and has removed the text.
Last February a screenshot leaked of an "explicit" category in iTunes Connect. Soon after the screenshot went public, Apple pulled the explicit category from the list. Is this latest placeholder a sign that Apple will be allowing adult apps back in the App Store? Given the mention of the iPad in the second category it doesn't look like these links were simply holdovers from before.
Some users we becoming increasingly frustrated that generic "sexy" apps (think Babes in Bikinis) were making their way into every category. Apple eventually pulled all the apps to the joy of some users and the dismay of others. An opt-in explicit category would allow for people to choose whether they wanted to see the adult-themed apps or not.TUAWExplicit App Store categories appear, disappear originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 15:00:00 EST. Apple - AppStore - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iTunesПереслать - Exclusive: Best Buy playbook for iPad leaked, quantities to be extremely limited
Filed under: iPad
Planning to skip the Apple Store crowds and sneak over to one of the 670+ Best Buy stores that will be selling the iPad on launch day? Better get there early, as each store will be limited to 15 iPads in stock, and those WiFi-only iPads will be evenly distributed among the three price points.
Other worthwhile tidbits gleaned from the playbook:- The fourth SKU rumored for the Best Buy lineup is indeed the demonstration/not for resale unit.
- Best Buy's April 11 ad insert will feature the iPad on the front cover, even though not all Best Buy locations will stock the iPad.
- Stores are expected to receive another 15 iPads for sale on 4/11, but if supplies are constrained they may have to hold some of the initial inventory back. This implies that Apple will be able to tell Best Buy prior to 4/3 whether or not the second round of deliveries will be coming.
- iPads will not be sold via Best Buy's website, consistent with the original rumor.
- iPad accessories will also be stocked at Best Buy
Update: Our amigo Josh T. at Engadget also has some spy shots of the playbook, including a wider view listing the available accessories.

BestBuy - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleStoreПереслать - MacBook Pro spotted on Caprica
Filed under: Macbook Pro
It's not at all unusual for Apple's products to make guest appearances on TV shows and films. Some shows take this to an extreme. 30 Rock, for example, is so stuffed full of iMacs, MacBooks, and iPhones that it seems like Apple is the only computer company in that show's universe.
A unibody MacBook Pro made a guest appearance in the unlikeliest of places last night: on the season finale of Caprica, SyFy's prequel to the critically acclaimed, re-imagined Battlestar Galactica TV series. It's unusual enough to see a MacBook Pro on a science fiction show of this type in the first place, but given the setting of the Battlestar Galactica universe, it's even more extraordinary. For those of you who haven't yet caught up on the final season of BSG for one reason or another, I've hidden the rest of this article behind the "Read More" link so you won't get any spoilers from me. Filed under: Software
A well-known software vendor is rushing in to help out Mac users who have become "orphaned" by the recent failure of Now Software.
Marketcircle, developers of Daylite, have set up a web page on their site to help out existing users of Now Up-to-Date and Contact (NUDC) who may be looking for a new solution. The page starts off by noting that Daylite may not be the perfect solution for some NUDC users, and then details the similarities and differences between the applications. There are even instructions on how to customize Daylite to make it more familiar looking to NUDC users, and hints on how to make the migration between the two applications.
To help ease the pain of moving to a new platform, Marketcircle is also offering a 30% discount on Daylite to former Now Software customers who are going to need a new application. Details on how to take advantage of the Daylite discount can be found here.
Of course, Daylite isn't the only solution that former NUDC customers can move to; the original developers of Now Up-to-Date are the brains behind BusyCal and BusySync, and they have just reprinted a blog post about how to migrate your NUD information to iCal so that it can be used with the products of BusyMac software.TUAWMarketcircle gives orphaned NUDC users some love originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 11:00:00 EST. Several readers have notified us that the date for iPad pre-orders has been shifted back to April 12th, according to Apple's website. It is important to note that people who have pre-ordered before today can still expect to get their iPads on April 3rd.
Those pre-ordering today & going forward should not expect the pre-orders to arrive before April 12th. The change in the pre-order shipping status suggests that Apple has completely sold out of the original online allotment of WiFi iPads. 3G iPad models still list a shipping date of "late April."

Steve Jobs - Google - iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Found Footage: Singing with a quartet of iPhones
Filed under: iPhone
Happy weekend! Here's a girl from Korea, named applegirl002 over on YouTube, playing Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" with a quartet of iPhones as accompaniment. Sure, the song's not that great, but look at those iPhones go! She's using I am T-Pain for autotuning the singing, Beatmaker for laying out the beats, and ... she says "Analog" in the video. However, I think it's miniSynth that she's actually got running on the last iPhone.
You might not be gaga over Gaga (I'm definitely not), but running a whole choir of iPhones like that is quite impressive. It's also worth noting that she accomplished this feat without pulling in some of the more popular music apps like Bebot and Ocarina. It turns out that the iPhone is an excellent way to turn out some pretty complicated music.TUAWFound Footage: Singing with a quartet of iPhones originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 27 Mar 2010 09:00:00 EST.
