  • Amazon stealthily releases Kindle app for Mac

    Filed under:

No press release, no big fanfare, but reader Chris sent in the news earlier tonight: Amazon's long-awaited Kindle application for Mac is ready for download. The 22 MB free application works on Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.5 and above, and reports a version number of 1.0.0 beta 1. The app has been anticipated since last October, back when the iPad was still a rumor. [Update: The press release was a couple of hours behind the software release, but 9to5 spotted it; it notes that full-text search and annotation features will be coming soon.]

The app allows you to download Kindle books you already own, and read them at leisure on your Mac; synchronization of your progress through the book is automatic, and will keep track with your Kindle or iPhone reading. It displays your bookmarks and highlights from your Kindle reading sessions, but doesn't let you create new highlights. You can adjust font size and line length to suit your visual acuity; turning pages is accomplished by using the scroll wheel on your mouse, or with the arrow keys.

It's definitely no-frills, but it's good to see that the Mac app for Kindle reading is finally seeing the light of day, although it's too bad PowerPC and Tiger users are left out of the fun. Thanks, Amazon... now, about that iPad app...

    Thanks Chris!

  • Aol Autos app strips down car buying data for research, daydreams

Most people don't buy a car but once every few years (or more). But that doesn't mean that people don't like shopping for new cars. If you're one of those kind of people, then a new app from Aol Autos*, released today, could be your new favorite toy.

Basically, the App is a stripped down version of the New Cars section of the Aol Autos website. Start by entering your search parameters - price, type, style and make/model - and the app will show you all the new vehicles currently available that fit what you're looking for.

If you want a new sub-$15,000 hatchback, for example, there are 18 on the market right now. How about a hybrid that costs between $15,000 and $25,000. You get your choice of six. For those lazy Sunday afternoon daydreams, you can also price options for the $1.38 million 2010 Maybach Landaulet. $12,250 for a three-place rear seat? Sign me up. Keep reading to find out more.

    Gallery: Aol Autos App

    *Aol, of course, owns TUAW.

If you're only interested in new cars, the Aol Autos app is actually much easier to navigate and a cleaner design than the full site. The photo gallery - all manufacturer promotional shots - is slick and shows off most every angle or most every car. Of course, if you're all the dealership when you play with the app, then this section is less than helpful. For daydreaming about that Maybach from the office, though, it works well. Pricing, trim level and other information in the database comes from Autodata, and is constantly updated. For this reason and others, the app needs an internet connection for full functionality. Thankfully, it does save the information and images that you've already looked at for off-line viewing. Autodata supplies "MSRP, Invoice, and target market pricing available on most models," and the app even tells you what the difference is between those three price points

Speaking of connections, you can easily email links to particular vehicles from within the app, or post your finds to Twitter or Facebook. This is handy, but what would be really useful would be a way to store your own notes. Imagine: if you're configuring or building cars in the app and then driving around to dealerships to see what's available near you, wouldn't it be cool to jot down what the dealer tells you? Sorry, you can't do that. The app is also missing the "Get a Price Quote" functionality that the Aol Autos site does. Like we said, it's stripped down.

The app will give you owner and expert opinions for most of the vehicles on the market today. If the review is on the website, then you can access it through the app.

Once you've found a vehicle you like, you can save it to favorites, something you can't do on the site. These faves are accessed from the main page for easy comparison, just the thing for more daydreaming about what to buy. Or, of course, for actually buying a car. The app is available for free in the iTunes App Store.

  • Analysts: iMac to take over 25% of PC sales, Mac to see 31% growth

    Filed under:

We're only days away from the release of the iPad, and that means analysts are doing crazy business -- they're laying out as many predictions as they can before theory becomes actual numbers. Our friend Gene Munster is first -- he says that despite the introduction of a brand new category, Mac sales will be even better than investors expect this quarter, with a whopping 26% to 31% year-over-year growth. Apparently retail data suggests that Macs are flying off of the shelves, and that Apple should end up with almost 3 million Macs sold in the March quarter.

PC sales in general are also expected to increase, with the iMac carrying a whole quarter of all desktop growth this year. Desktop sales are finally headed upwards for the first time in a few years, and along with bigger sales numbers in terms of netbooks and notebooks, Apple's iMac platform is leading the charge. International sales are also expected to drive the PC market -- if the numbers are right, this will be the first time ever that sales internationally take up 50% of the desktop PC market.

Interesting predictions, all. There's no question, I think, that Apple will make plenty of money this quarter. The question going forward will be whether the iPad steals sales that would have gone to the iPhone or to a MacBook. But if the past numbers with the iPhone are any indication, big interest in the portable devices actually drives Apple's desktop sales as well.

  • Accessorizing your iPad... for cheap!

    Filed under:

Why spend more, when you can buy iPad-friendly accessories at your local office- or art-supply store? That's the question we asked this morning at TUAW as we sent out an iPad taskforce to scan store shelves for discount iPad accessories. In the end, we found one really killer stand, a well-priced case, and a number of also-rans.

Our favorite accessory turned out to be a Staples "Study Stand". Built from chrome (the non-Google variety), and retailing for just $6.99, the study stand provided both excellent portrait and landscape presentation at a user-friendly angle. It barely obscured the screen and occupied a minimum of desk space. Best of all, the stand folds. Although the holder tips remain slightly extended from the base, the rest of the stand flattens out and makes the entire package very backpack friendly.

As a close runner-up, we found a fashionable $15 neoprene netbook case, meant for 10.2" netbooks at Office Depot. Unlike 10" netbook cases, the 10.2" styles seemed to fit our iPad mockup perfectly. The Office Depot case came in a variety of colors and clocked in on our affordability scale.

You can't yet buy real Apple-sanctioned official iPad toys, but you can buy our consumer-friendly alternatives today! It doesn't have to be fugctional[1] to be iPad-ready.

  • KaleidoVid turns your iPhone into a video kaleidoscope

    Filed under:

KaleidoVid is the latest app from David Barnard of App Cubby. Working with Layton Duncan of Polar Bear Farm and Dave Keller of rocket, David decided to have some fun and make a "delightful" app. We got to see an early demo of KaleidoVid at Macworld Expo, and have been anticipating its release.

If you played with a kaleidoscope as a kid, you'll be familiar with this app. Instead of mirrors and beads, KaleidoVid makes use of the iPhone's camera. To use it, simply turn it on and point the camera in any direction, then move the iPhone until you find a pattern that you like.

From there, tap the screen to put a snapshot into your Camera Roll, or share your creations with Twitter, Facebook or email. Tap the screen again to resume playing.

it's surprisingly fun and more of a toy than a game (I had to pry it away from my kids). KaleidoVid is available in the App Store now for US$0.99. Check out the gallery below for screenshots and some of my better creations.

  • Count The Beats: Learn to read and play sheet music with Etude on your iPhone
From the creators of ShoveBox, Wonder Wrap Software has just launched their new iPhone / iPod touch app Etude.

Etude is a beautifully designed app that helps you learn to read and play sheet music on the piano.

While the built-in synthesizer plays through a piece of music, Etude will scroll through the sheet music being read (correlating each note heard to each note read). A virtual keyboard will also display each key being pressed at the same moment each note is being read and heard.

To make things even easier the playback speed can be altered so you can make sure you're hitting every note of Bach's Air!

Etude comes preloaded with a few 'Scores' to get you started, but you can download (from within the app) hundreds of other songs for free from the Etude score store.

Etude is certainly a novel way to develop your piano playing skills, and a fantastic application of the features of the iPhone / iPod touch for those who love music. Plus, Wonder Wrap Software is developing a version for the iPad, too. Anyone get those pre-orders in?

To celebrate the release of Etude this week Wonder Wrap Software is running a promotion where you can get yourself a free copy of their desktop app SimpleChord. All you need to do is tweet.

  • No more accidental Caps Lock with CapSee

If you've ever accidentally turned on your Caps Lock key and caused some trouble, Threemagination's utility CapSee may be just what you're looking for. It simply displays a bezel notification on your screen when you hit the Caps Lock key, reminding you that Caps Lock is on. It's free, and useful for anyone who might need such a reminder.

Threemagination has just released the latest version of CapSee, which adds the ability to hide the menu icon and make CapSee as unobtrusive as you like.

Personally, I always remap my Caps Lock key to an Option key in my System Preferences (go to the Keyboard pane and look in the lower right for the Modifier Keys button). OS X also provides a small icon in password dialogs that lets you know you've got Caps Lock on. There are, I'm sure, plenty of people who actually use Caps Lock for legitimate purposes, which is where CapSee shines. If you're suffering from Accidental Caps Lock Syndrome, give it a shot.

  • Apple bans protective screen films from Apple Store

    Filed under:

iLounge is reporting that Apple has banned protective screen films from its retail and online stores. Several film-screen manufacturers have confirmed that Apple's ban will take effect in May. Multiple vendors told iLounge that Apple has said that it will remove both film-only solutions from its stores, as well as any case or other accessory that includes film protection as part of its package, such as cases that include film screen protectors.

The ban will reportedly impact all forms of screen film, including completely clear film, anti-glare film, and mirrored film, regardless of whether the purpose of the film is protective, decorative, or both. The ban isn't limited to iPhone films either. Apple will also prevent sales of film for iPods, iPads, and Mac computers.

Apple has not specifically told film vendors why they won't allow sales of films from here on out, but many speculate that Apple believes the sales of films in its stores imply that Apple's device's screens scratch easily. The first iPod nano was infamous for screen scratching and Apple eventually settled a class action lawsuit over the device's screen in 2009. Though some people have reported their iPhone's screen scratching, many reviewers were impressed with the durability of the original iPhone's screen. PC World stated, "We were very impressed that even this deliberate attempt to scratch the screen completely failed" in regards to their first hands on tests back in 2007. With the introduction of the iPhone 3GS Apple introduced an oleophobic screen coating to help keep finger oils from smudging the display.

    • Compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications
    • Performance improvements for 64-bit Logic
    • Changes to QuickTime X that increase reliability and improve compatibility and security
    • Printing reliability and compatibility with third party printers
    • Issues resolved that prevented files from copying to Windows shares
    • Issues resolved with recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server
    • Issues resolved that prevented files with the "#" or "&" symbols in their names from opening in Rosetta
    • Issues addressed that caused background message colors to display incorrectly in Mail when scrolling
    • Issue resolved that caused machines using BTMM and the Bonjour Sleep Proxy to wake unexpectedly
There is one known issue in this build: Safari 4.0.5 will be re-offered by Software Update after upgrading to 10D571 from a previous seed. It has been over five months since Snow Leopard has been updated. 10.6 was released on August 28, 2009 followed less than two weeks later by 10.6.1. On November 9, 2009, Apple released 10.6.2.

  • The differences between iPad and iPhone apps

    Filed under:

Here's an interesting post by a blogger named teucher that echoes something we've heard from developers before -- that the iPhone and the iPad will require completely different experiences. When the iPad was first announced, one of Apple's big selling points was that it already had a full library of software ready to go -- any iPhone app could and would easily run on the iPad. That's a huge advantage for any platform starting out. But as time gets closer to the actual device release date, it seems more and more like what works on the iPhone won't do for the iPad and vice versa. Take a look at this screenshot of IM+ for the iPad above -- while the UI elements are the same in general, you can't do a dual pane set of controls like that on the iPhone.

The big question is what this means for development -- originally, Apple sounded like they wanted to just have one App Store that you could install apps to any of your devices from. But since iPad and iPhone development are already diverging so much, it's very likely that we'll see an actual separation in the store. Additionally, as teucher suggests, Apple may need to make a separation between full and minor apps on the iPhone itself -- an app like "Clock" doesn't really call for the whole screen. That's where a widget system might come into play.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens with development and design divergence across the two devices going forward. April 3rd is almost upon us, and even the first few weeks of iPad apps should give us some indication of how the two platforms will relate to each other.

  • So very disturbing: Bring me Steve Jobs' (cheese) head on a plate

Have you ever wanted to eat Steve Jobs? On second thought, don't answer that.

Ken over at TheCooksDen has sculpted an edible Steve Jobs' head out of two blocks of mozzarella and some pepper. It's actually pretty impressive in a Hannibal Lecter kind of way. Ken, who admits he's a Mac fanboy and a foodie, thought that there was no better way to show his appreciation for his much-loved Apple products than to create a tasty sculpture in the form of Apple's venerable leader.

    Well all right then.

He doesn't stop with just Steve's head either (as if you were worried about that). Ken offers three other recipes - all using Steve's head in some way - to show off your Apple gastronomy. The concoctions include the Apple Cheese Plate, the Spicy Steve Nachos Supreme, and my favorite, the iPad Thai. The full ingredients list and cooking instructions are on the site. So, what are you waiting for? Get cooking!

  • Hands-on with Zombie Smash!

    Filed under:

I've been playing with a beta of Game Doctor's Zombie Smash! for three weeks now and I can honestly say it's the most fun I've ever had on my iPhone. ZombieSmash! is a "Survival Comedy" game featuring undead-themed castle defense and entertaining, physics-based gameplay. The game casts players as Joey, a lone survivor pit against a herd of writhing, unrelenting zombies. To defeat the undead masses players must use their fingers to flick and smash the zombies until they're un-undead.

The game features six "species" of zombies, each with their own skills and abilities. Picking up and smashing zombies together, or flicking them into the air only to see their bodies crumple on the ground is fantastically entertaining thanks to the rag doll "SplatterEngine" used in the game. In addition to your fingers, you can acquire over 20 special weapons from the in-game store. The weapons can be purchased using the star points that you collect when defeating a zombie. Besides the standard collection of guns, you're able to purchase land mines, grenades, wrecking balls, liquid nitrogen containers, and even a friggin' asteroid.

In addition to the 31-night Campaign Mode, the Endless Siege and Sandbox modes lend towards the re-playability of this game when you just need to do some zombie smashing to relieve your frustrations. The game is also helped by its original soundtrack which was composed by famed game music composer Chris Hülsbeck who scored many Commodore 64 games.

ZombieSmash! goes on sale today for $1.99 for iPhone and iPod touch running OS 3.0.

  • Things coming to iPad, updates to 1.3

At the end of his latest blog post, Cultured Code's Jürgen Schweizer revealed that the company is working on a version of Things for the iPad. The announcement isn't that surprising, especially given that The Omni Group announced at the beginning of February that its software suite, including Things' GTD rival OmniFocus, is also heading to the iPad.

Things has also updated to version 1.3, which adds support for "mixed" projects (meaning that you're no longer limited to having action steps in your projects). Things Touch [iTunes link] for the iPhone/iPod Touch also updated to 1.3.14 in order to be compatible with the desktop release.

We have some big fans of Things among TUAW staffers, and I actually tweeted yesterday -- prior to reading the Cultured Code blog -- that I plan to give up on the seemingly-abandoned The Hit List and pick up Things for myself. The iPad is well-suited for these productivity suites, and I'm eager to see how both Things and OmniFocus turn out on the iPad.

Edit: The Hit List creator Andy Kim contacted me on Wednesday night, reassuring me that The Hit List has not been abandoned and that he is working on the iPhone version of the software. Thanks for checking in, Andy!

  • You can't always trust Drobo Dashboard

Is your Drobo up to date? Don't trust Drobo Dashboard for the answer.

Drobo and I have not been getting along this week. I have two Drobo units: a FireWire model and a USB model. I moved them to my office last week, and the USB model started complaining about being low on space. The Drobo Dashboard showed drives in all four bays, and since I hadn't been low on space before, I was confused as to what had happened. About a day later, I checked again (after working hard to delete anything unnecessary) and it showed a missing drive in one of the bays. Not a failed drive, but a missing drive. I shut the Drobo down completely, ejected the drive, and mounted it back on the iMac.

Suddenly I had a lot of free space, but Drobo was acting like I had just put in a new hard drive. It took two days for it to sort itself out.

Everything seemed fine until I was using my iMac a few days later. Suddenly, my iMac said "You have ejected [my FireWire Drobo] without unmounting it." I told it that I had done no such thing, I hadn't ejected anything. I couldn't get the Drobo to remount, even after rebooting. It would work via USB, and it would work via FireWire with my MacBook Pro, but not with the iMac.

I worked with AppleCare to diagnose the problem, and they asked me if my Drobo firmware was up to date. I said it was, and that it was one of the first things I had checked, using the latest version of Drobo Dashboard. My answer was true... except that Drobo Dashboard wasn't telling me about the latest firmware.

I spent all day on Friday talking with AppleCare, running diagnostics, driving back to my house to get my original install CDs, calling AppleCare again, running more tests, and finally having them agree to send a technician out to replace the logic board on my iMac. He arrived this morning (Tuesday) and spent an hour doing the replacement.

About an hour later, the Drobo started acting up again. The install of Snow Leopard was only a week old and I had a completely new logic board, so I was starting to suspect the Drobo. I called Drobo support and their tech asked me if I was running the latest version of the firmware.

"Oh yes," I said with confidence, "I checked in Drobo Dashboard this morning."

"There's a newer version on our website," he replied.

My blood pressure tripled. Sure enough, I have 1.3.5 and, according to Drobo's own release notes, their Drobo Firmware 1.3.6 was released on February 3, 2010. It is posted on their website. It is not a beta. It is released software. They just "aren't pushing it" out to customers.

If I click a "Check for Updates" button in your app, and you have a new, non-beta update on your website, it fills me with a certain degree of rage when your application sits there and lies shamelessly. This is not a debatable point, it's a matter of trust.

I downloaded the latest version of the firmware (1.3.6, as of this writing), opened the .dmg file, and copied the "v.136.tdz" file to my Desktop. Then I held down the control key as I clicked "Check for Updates" in Drobo Dashboard, which brought up a regular "Open" window where I could select the "v.136.tdz" file. I updated the Drobo to firmware version 1.3.6 (Note, usually disclaimers apply: if you decide to upgrade your firmware, be sure to backup your data first, etc.).

And suddenly my Drobo works fine with my iMac.

Of course this prompts the question, "Did I really need to have the logic board replaced on my iMac?" It's entirely possible that I did. Ever since my iMac complained about the FireWire drive being ejected when I didn't eject it, I could not even mount the Drobo. After the new logic board, I could mount it, but Finder would hang and I would have to shut down the iMac and disconnect the Drobo before the iMac would finish rebooting.

On the other hand, that's not really the point. The point is that, when it really mattered, Drobo Dashboard failed to provide me with correct information. The last thing that anyone wants is to doubt what their software tells them.

To their credit, Drobo's phone tech support was able to solve the problem, and did so free of charge for a product that is out of warranty. However, chances are I wouldn't have had to call at all if they hadn't decided to not tell users about an update, even when those users specifically checked for it.

  • NPR, WSJ prep Flash-free sites for iPad

Both National Public Radio and the Wall Street Journal are preparing Flash-free iPad sites in time for the device's April 3rd debut.

MediaMemo cites a blog post over at NPR, letting us know that NPR fans can either download an updated app for NPR (once the iPad ships and the app is ready), or visit an iPad-optimized version of NPR.org that contains no Flash. The Wall Street Journal is also going with a Flash-free site, although visitors can expect to hunt through the site and find some pages which still have Flash.

Having non-Flash sites exist alongside their Flash siblings will probably be the solution for many publications in the near future. However, we know that Steve Jobs hopes that Flash will go the way of the PowerPC and the floppy disk, and developers will turn to alternatives such as HTML5.

  • iWork.com beta improves iPhone/iPod touch support, public sharing

    Filed under:

Apple has updated the iWork.com beta with improved iPhone and iPod touch support as well as 1-click sharing of documents publicly.

Previously, iWork.com let you share Keynote '09, Pages '09, or Numbers '09 documents via a browser with invited members of a team. Now, you can create a public link that allows anyone to see your files, no invitation necessary. It couldn't be easier to set up: With the document open, select "Public" and then "Show public URL." From there you just copy and paste. You can also track the number of views your publicly shared documents receive.

The other addition is improved iPhone and iPod touch support. The login interface is much improved as well as the list of documents. I've got a number of large Keynote slide shows up there, and not all of them fit on my iPhone's screen, but they were easy to flick through.

It's a nice update to a service we haven't heard much about lately. To share a document via iWork.com, select "Share via iWork.com" from the share menu of a Keynote '09, Pages '09, or Numbers '09 document.

  • Fake Steve Jobs to be a TV show

    Filed under:

Dan Lyons, better known as blogger Fake Steve Jobs, has apparently signed a deal with Seinfeld writer Larry Charles to create a half-hour, single camera, satirical TV show about a Silicon Valley hotshot. As of now, Lyons is only writing the pilot script for the series, but since it's called "iCON," there will probably be plenty of FSJ's humor and voice in the series itself. It's set to air on Epix, which is a premium cable channel run by Viacom.

The show centers around Tom Rhodes, a Silicon Vally big shot who's designed to be a composite of Steve Jobs and a few other big tech company names, and the "savage satire" is supposed to be "a study of ego, power and greed." That sounds like fun! Since "iCON" and the Facebook movie are both scheduled to begin production, it certainly looks like Hollywood is interested in digging into the recent Silicon Valley past for a little humor and drama.

  • Tony Hawk coming to iPhone soon

    Filed under:

A leak on Tony Hawk's official Twitter account has revealed this picture, which appears to be Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game being played right there on the iPhone. The tweet that linked to this picture seems to be gone, but it promised that "This is real & dropping soon." If we believe this message, it looks like we may be seeing the seminial skating series on the iPhone in the near future.

My Tony Hawk knowledge is far from complete, but that level certainly does look like the hangar level from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which was my personal favorite way back on the Playstation 1 (I also played it quite a bit on the PC back in the day). Of course, just because the aforementioned level is in there, that doesn't mean that it's the full Pro Skater 2 (the iPhone version could be a mixup of levels from the previous skating games). However, given the font, and the d-pad and button layout, it does seem that we'll be seeing some old school TH action (as opposed to the recent Tony Hawk Ride debacle). We'll keep an eye on the store and let you know if and when we see something.

  • Apple store in Brazil? Jobs says no

    Filed under:

Rio de Janeiro may have picked up the 2016 Olympics, but they won't be getting an Apple store. According to MacMagazine Brazil, the city's Secretary of Heritage emailed Steve Jobs personally to ask if there were any plans to start up an Apple store in the city. Jobs replied back in the negative, citing high taxes on imports in the area and saying that "many [other] high-tech companies feel that way."

Apple has no stores at all in Mexico or Central or South America. Almost all foreign countries apply import tariffs to products manufactured elsewhere, but apparently charges in those countries are too high for Jobs to be interested. He said that the high charge "makes it very unattractive to invest in the country." Some manufacturers will lower their retail prices to a certain country in an attempt to dodge higher tariffs on more expensive goods (taking a small cut on profits in order to avoid paying high fees), but obviously Apple, as a premium manufacturer, would rather not get involved if it means lowering their prices. So, for the moment, Brazil will have to go without an Apple Store.

    [Thanks, Silvio Sousa Cabra!]

  • Apple about to drop new hardware, raise prices?

Update: MacRumors now points out that the higher prices are likely an inadvertent rollback to older graphics, as they match up with the original pricing for those machines when they were introduced. Engadget has also pointed out some similar inconsistencies on the Apple Australia and NZ sites, which may mean that Apple mistakenly pushed out old assets to the retailers with incorrect pricing.

A reader at Engadget has spotted new Apple ads on the Australian tech site PC Authority that show higher prices for the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro. Apple's Australian online store lists the most affordable versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro at A$1599, A$1999 and A$3599, respectively, but the ads show significantly higher "starting at" prices of A$1899, A$2399, and A$4499.

While Engadget points out that clicking on the ads leads to Apple's currently priced machines, it is possible that this is another case where online ads have predicted imminent announcements. Despite the rumors, no new Mac Pro's appeared yesterday but are still expected soon as they haven't seen a major upgrade in over a year. The rise in MacBook Pro pricing could be attributed to the cost of the i7 chipset, but it seems unlikely that in a recovering economy Apple would increase their prices significantly without having a cheaper baseline model available. Is this ad a sign of things to come? Only time and a "We'll be back soon" sticky note will tell.
