- We Rule hits a million sessions in 24 hours
Filed under: Gaming
Ngmoco CEO Neil Young tweeted on the official account that We Rule has reached a million app sessions in a 24 hour period, which means we can probably call their big freemium experiment an early success. We've seen quite a few people talking about We Rule and their accounts in our comments and on Twitter, so it's definitely out there and being played. But of course we have no idea yet just how well it's doing in terms of turning over in-app purchases and making money. Still, if his talk at GDC is any indication, Young doesn't really care: their main goal is to get lots and lots of people using the app, and a million sessions in a day sounds like they've either got that or they're well on their way.
Which means you will probably see lots more of this on the store in the near future -- Godfinger is due out soon from Ngmoco (it's currently in their Canadian App Store "beta"), and of course we've heard that they've got no less than six iPad titles planned, undoubtedly some due soon after the April 3rd launch. Ngmoco's freemium model had its naysayers when the company first revealed their plans, but it looks like they've all quieted down -- they're off playing We Rule.TUAWWe Rule hits a million sessions in 24 hours originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: Gaming
Booyah has released version 3.0 of their MyTown location-based social networking app on the iPhone. As Keith Lee told me at GDC a few weeks ago, this app makes up the largest number of location-based social users on the platform, eclipsing even Foursquare and Gowalla in terms of users. And version 3.0 overhauls the social side of the game, allowing you to now visit friends' towns, view their check-in history inside the app, and track them across leaderboards. You can also send items and gifts to your friends, which will likely make up a huge part of their in-game microtransaction system. The upgrade is available on the App Store right now, and the app is a free download.
MyTown is almost the silent contender in the race over check-in apps on platforms like the iPhone -- Foursquare and Gowalla are getting plenty of press, but Booyah is quietly building up a gigantic, dedicated audience for their app. As Keith Lee told us, they're working on "some very interesting viral growth mechanics or loops that haven't worked out yet on iPhone but have been done on other platforms." This social update will likely drive their already sizeable audience to grow even bigger.TUAWBooyah releases MyTown 3.0, adds friends lists and social features originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. AppStore - Booyah - iPhone - Keith Lee - GowallaПереслать - A look at Apple's board
Filed under: Apple Corporate
The Wall Street Journal has posted an inside view on Apple's board of directors in the wake of Jerome York's death, and the image they paint is one of a tiny group of people that's strongly loyal to Jobs himself. The group of six people is the smallest board at a Fortune 500 company, and they're all basically handpicked by Jobs, who cleaned house after his return to Apple in the late '90s. He kept only two members back then whom he could trust, and has since only brought on people who will follow his direction.
Not that board members aren't consulted -- York was apparently an expert at auditing and governance, and reigned in those areas. But when Jobs wanted his way, board members stayed quiet or got out -- York told the Wall Street Journal last year that he was "disgusted" by the way the company had handled the reports on Jobs' health and that he even wished he'd left the company over his disagreement. But such is Jobs' hold on the board that even York stayed quiet.
And that's not likely to change in the future. While Apple's rules require them to fill the vacancy that York left, word is that it's unlikely that they'll add too much new blood to the mix. The last time a seat was vacated, when Google's Eric Schmidt left the board, they simply decided they had enough directors and moved on. While COO Tim Cook is rumored to be the best option to fill the spot, the company likely won't make a move unless Jobs says so.

Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - EricSchmidt - Wall Street Journal - Jerry YorkПереслать - More iPad games revealed
Filed under: iPad
It looks like the crafty folks over at MacRumors have figured out how to snake their way into the not-yet-public listing for top revenue iPad apps. Now, we've got a flood of information coming out about software for the device that's not coming out for another week or so. As you can see above, quite a few rumored and revealed games are already charting on the iPad store, and it looks like prices are running from $3.99 to $9.99. "HD" appeared to be the preferred nomenclature for iPad games yesterday, but "for iPad" is in there as well. It also looks like Enigmo for the iPhone will be Enigmo Deluxe on the iPad. MacRumors says that some of the "released" dates on this listing go back as far as March 19th, which is presumably when Apple started approving iPad apps.
We've spoken to some of the developers whose games were revealed, and they are not very happy with the leaks. A few other details are showing up, presumably from App Store descriptions linked off of this top revenue list, but we've confirmed with at least one developer above that all of those details are still pending and not yet confirmed. It's no surprise that Apple wanted to be on top of getting apps out on the iPad store before the device's launch, but they've inadvertently revealed some of their developers' hands prematurely.
Update: 9 to 5 Mac has a full list of the App Store chart. It's not yet clear where all of these shots are coming from, but it seems like they're being taken in the dev kit's iPad simulator, which is supposedly still under developer NDA.TUAWMore iPad games revealed originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 18:15:00 EST. iPhone - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - MacRumorsПереслать - The cost of Apple's products, adjusted for inflation
Filed under: iPad
A site called VoucherCodes recently tried to figure out if the $499 entry-level iPad really is as good a deal as many have claimed. They analyzed the cost of several of Apple's products, adjusted for inflation, and some of the results are pretty astonishing.
The first Apple computer ever created, the Apple I, cost $666.66 in 1976. Adjusted to 2010 dollars, that Apple I would cost $2,540, which isn't too bad. But the Apple Lisa, Apple's first stab at creating a computer with a Graphical User Interface, cost $9,995 in 1983, or a staggering $21,745 in today's dollars. Sure, the GUI was a cool bit of innovation, over $20,000 for a personal computer?
Comparing the iPad to previous Apple portables is even more interesting. Apple's first portable computer cost $6,500 in 1989 -- which would be almost $11,400 today -- while the $699 Newton from 1993 would cost nearly $1,050 in today's dollars. Most intriguing of all is that the first iPod, released for $399 in 2001, cost $488 in today's dollars. That's just $11 under the cost of the iPad, a device that has far more storage, processing power, and access to more features than the first iPod could even dream of only nine and a half years ago. Apple's handhelds are cheaper than ever, even when you bring inflation into the mix.
Within my lifetime alone, computers have gone from luxury items and objects of curiosity, something people would have to save several months of paychecks in order to buy, to something people buy on a whim, for a week's pay, and carry around with them in their pockets. It's not surprising that the cost of computers has come down over time, but when charts like the one at VoucherCodes drive home just how much prices have dropped in terms of the real value of the US dollar, it's pretty amazing.TUAWThe cost of Apple's products, adjusted for inflation originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
No more sleepless nights for Apple's lawyers, at least not until the Nokia and HTC suits begin to heat up. The company is now the proud owner of a slightly used trademark: iPad[TM], as of March 17, is no longer a Fujitsu mark and has been assigned to Apple. Much speculation had surrounded the trademark process for iPad, as Fujitsu's mark was being challenged by Apple as early as September 2009, but it looks like the two companies have come to some sort of agreement.
Despite Fujitsu's original 2003 application to use iPad as a trademark for its line of retail handheld terminals, the name's true master has never really been clear; as Engadget noted in January, there was already a company using "IPAD" as a product name in the payment space, and Fujitsu's application went stale in April 2009 before the company tried to reactivate it. That's when Apple's team started getting into the mix.
Terms of the arrangement have not been disclosed, but unfounded speculation and an absence of real data leads us to believe that the process involved a suitcase full of gold bullion and a promise to deliver several engraved iPads to Fujitsu corporate headquarters. [Note: not really.]

Molly Wood of "Buzz Out Loud" issued a call earlier this week to make an Apple vs. Predator video and YouTube user Kelvington stepped up to the challenge. The video shows that the Predators invented the "slide to unlock" feature circa 1987 and are pissed that Steve Jobs stole their idea. However, instead of ripping Steve's spine out, the video mocks that things are "about to get litigious."
One cool thing about the video is that it shows other clips of iPad and multitouch tech in past movies and TV shows like Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Minority Report. It's always interesting to remember that while some sci-fi movie tech is based on actual applied science, sci-fi can spur the imagination of scientists and technologists to create technologies that were once only in the domain of science fantasy fiction.TUAWFound Footage: Apple vs. Predator originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 17:00:00 EST. Steve Jobs - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - TelevisionПереслать - Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt share a coffee
Filed under: Steve Jobs
Wonders never cease.
Gizmodo has posted photos of what appears to be Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt sharing a coffee in Palo Alto. What's significant is that the photo was supposedly taken today.
Gizmodo's tipster supposedly overheard Jobs say, "They're going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it," (this in reference to web content, the tipster notes) and, "Let's go discuss this somewhere more private."
The public, rapid deterioration of the relationship between Jobs and Schmidt (and on a larger scale, Apple and Google) has been the talk of the tech world in recent weeks. You'll remember that Schmidt joined Apple's board in 2006, and that Google had a hand in the original iPhone's Map app. Since then, Google released Chrome OS and the Android phones, generating an obvious conflict of interest. Last year, Schmidt resigned from Apple's board for that very reason.
So, these shots of the two titans enjoying a drink in sunny Palo Alto is unexpected to say the least. Of course, we aren't entirely sure that some aspect of the meeting wasn't staged. First of all, Steve is very recognizable in his "uniform," and the two men are outside. It's not uncommon to see celebrities in California, of course, but this like Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez sharing a scorpion bowl.
What Eric Schmidt didn't realize was that BOTH drinks were spiked with iocane powder. Steve has built up an immunity.TUAWSteve Jobs and Eric Schmidt share a coffee originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 16:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Steve Jobs - EricSchmidt - Google - Apple - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Three ways to disable Expose and Dashboard
Filed under: Odds and ends
A friend wrote to ask: Is there a way to turn off Expose without opening System Preferences, clicking on each drop-down menu and selecting the -- option? Because sometimes I just don't need it. Or it confuses my Mother. Or my advisor.
To be clear, she knows that she could go to System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces, then click on the Exposé tab, and change the keyboard shortcut for All Windows, Application windows, Show Desktop for Exposé, and Hide and show to -- but that's a whole lot of clicks, and isn't very convenient.
You could also go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts and uncheck the boxes, which is also inconvenient.
First I'm going to answer the question that you asked, and then I'm going to give you a few other suggestions.
The answer is yes, and Apple seemed to know this was something people would want to do. They provide two tips to disable the Dashboard and disable Exposé.
Go to /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and enter these three lines:
defaults write com.apple.dock mcx-expose-disabled -bool true defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES killall Dock
Do that before you hand your computer off and your friends, relatives, and advisors will be incrementally less likely to be confused by your computer.
There's only one thing wrong with this plan: it doesn't seem to work for Application Windows. I tested this on my regular account and the OS X Guest account, and the above commands successfully nullified F9 (All Windows), F11 (Show Desktop), and F12 (Dashboard), but F10 (Application Windows) still worked, even after issuing these commands. I have no explanation for this other than assuming it is a bug in OS X 10.6.2.
Once you get your computer back again, paste these three lines into Terminal to undo the changes:
defaults write com.apple.dock mcx-expose-disabled -bool false defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO killall Dock
Ok, I've answered the question you asked, right? Now I'm going to give you two other suggestion, no extra charge.
Alternative #1: System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces, then click on the Exposé, and then change the keyboard shortcuts to require that the command key (that's the key with the ⌘ on it) be held down before in order to trigger the F9-F12 shortcuts. You can do this by clicking-and-holding the dropdown for each key, and then pressing the command key. You will see the ⌘ logo appear. It's much less likely that whoever borrows your computer will accidentally invoke Exposé or Dashboard if it requires two keyboard shortcuts. The trade-off is that you have to retrain yourself to use them as well. This probably won't take as long as you suspect.
Alternative #2: If you don't want to worry about Terminal commands or relearning any keyboard commands, take my advice and go for this option: create another account. Now I know someone is going to say "But OS X already has a Guest Account! I'll just use that!" The problem with the Guest account is that its preferences are deleted every time you logout. I'm going to suggest a "Friend" account instead. It's simple, and you'll thank me later.
Go to System Preferences > Accounts. Click the lock icon at the bottom left. Type in your password. Click the "+" button. A new panel will open up asking you to create a new account. Change "Standard" to "Managed with Parental Controls" from the dropdown. Name the account "Friend" and give it a simple password (or none at all).
When you have finished creating the account, make sure that "Allow user to administer this computer" is not checked. Then click the "Open Parental Controls" and check the box next to "Only allow selected applications" and then uncheck everything except iWork, Safari, iChat (maybe), and just about nothing else. Ok, maybe QuickTime Player.
Now there is another key step: login to the "Friend" account. You will find some applications which automatically want to run and you will be given the option to authorize them once, or for every time. Use the account for an hour or two, and authorize all the apps that you find you need for web browsing and basic word processing, which is what most guests will need to do.
You could make a regular standard account and not disable any applications. If the above steps sound too restrictive, just make a standard account. That will protect you from them doing too much damage.
Once you have an account setup, log into it and make sure the applications that someone is likely to want are on the Dock (Safari, iWork, etc). Go into the preference settings and disable the keyboard shortcuts for Exposé and Dashboard.

Update: A little birdie flew into TUAW headquarters with the following tidbit. Best Buy stores are receiving 3 sellable SKUs (16, 32, and 64). The fourth SKU is a demo unit. The SKUs are still "invisible" in the system, but can be found if you look hard enough. Deliveries appear to scheduled for Friday, with an overnight to display them before the Saturday release.
MacRumors is reporting that Best Buy will be carrying the WiFi iPad at launch on April 3rd. The iPad won't be available at all Best Buy's, however. Only Best Buys with badged Apple Solutions Consultants (ASC) and "Apple Shops" will be carrying the iPads -- that's about 675 stores total. MacRumors reports that Best Buy is listing four SKUs for the iPad and notes that the fourth one may be for one of the 3G models due to launch later in the month. Best Buy stores will not be opening early on launch day and bestbuy.com will not be carrying the iPad.
The ASC program was launched in 2001. It placed Apple employees in a handful of CompUSA stores in Texas and Southern California. In the years following, the ASC program grew to over 200 CompUSA stores. During that time, there was an ASC beta program in a limited number of Best Buys, but the Best Buy beta program was deemed unworkable shortly thereafter. However, after the bankruptcy of CompUSA in early 2007, the ASC program did expand into Best Buy again, this time bringing the familiar Apple Retail Store look and feel through "store-within-a-store" Apple Shop sections.
[Speaking of iPad orders, we've been hearing for the last 24 hours that pre-order customers are seeing credit card charges for their iPads -- not just the WiFi models, but the 3G+ models as well, which is a little bit early if the 3Gs aren't shipping until late April. -Ed.]TUAWBest Buy to carry iPad on April 3 at ASC-stores only originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 14:00:00 EST. Best Buy - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - MacRumorsПереслать - Analyst ups iPad sales estimate by 30%
Filed under: iPad
BMO Capital's Keith Bachman is bullish on Apple, and not in a small way. After bumping his target price for AAPL from $250 to $265 (keeping in mind that it's hovering around $227 now), he sent out a letter to clients cited by Phil Elmer-DeWitt at Apple 2.0 that explained the rationale behind the renewed optimism.
Along with upside anticipation for Mac and iPod sales, Bachman gave a major collagen injection to his iPad sales projections. He's now considering his original fiscal 2010 target of 2.5 million iPads sold to be a conservative number, and he's looking at a possible 7.2 million devices moved for FY 2011. Considering he was originally citing a 5.5m outlook for 2011, that's a big shift, and it gets him more in line with estimates from Gene Munster and other analysts.
Bachman bases his new numbers on his confidence in continued growth for both the ereader and netbook market segments, and Apple's ability to pick up more than 1/3 of the total sales in that space for 2010. It's a positive forecast -- and you have to think that Barnes & Noble, Sony and Amazon's potential customers are strongly considering iPads as an alternative to ereader-only purchases -- but it might be overenthusiastic to start counting those chickens before the iPad has a chance to spend a little time in the hands of real users.TUAWAnalyst ups iPad sales estimate by 30% originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 13:00:00 EST. 9to5Mac points to an Amazon placeholder that suggests Amazon is indeed preparing for sales of the iPad. The placeholder lists all six models of the iPad. Currently Amazon customers cannot order the device, but may be notified via email when the iPad is ready for order. The placeholder site states that the iPad can be shipped only within the U.S. (sorry overseas readers) and lists no date of availability. The placeholder page currently lists four reviews from people who have never touched the device.
Though the iPad competes directly with the Kindle, it makes perfect sense for Amazon to sell the device. The iPad is sure to be one of the hottest tech devices this year and will no doubt top Amazon's Bestsellers in Computer & Accessories list later in 2010. Besides revenue from the hardware, Amazon expects to profit from the iPad by selling its Kindle books through a dedicated iPad Kindle app. The more iPads sold, the greater potential revenue Amazon can achieve. Apple - IPad - Amazon Kindle - Amazon - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Review: Reiner Knizia's Topas
Filed under: iPhone, iPod touch, App Review
We don't mind it when iPhone versions of board games differ from their realspace counterparts, but the Topas app ($2.99) takes the basic ideas behind Reiner Knizia's 2009 game Topas and twists them into a mash-up of Tetris, the standard line-up-three-of-a-kind video games, and dominoes. The dominoes thing was in the original, but the video game vibes are all new.
Is this a good thing? Well, it kind of is. We like the variety that the app brings to basic Topas, but we don't understand why it was apparently impossible to carry over original gameplay from the physical card game. Even the game mode that comes closest to the card game version - weakest link, which is very similar to the card game's solo play - changes one minor rule. As to why, we have no idea. Still, Topas offers a decent amount of challenge and fun in an attractive package - maybe slightly overpriced in the App Store's admittedly low-cost ecosystem - for people who like their puzzle games to sparkle.
Keep reading to find out more about how Topas works and doesn't work as an iPhone game.

The price of fame: earlier this week, David Pogue lavished Toktumi's VoIP app Line2 with a hearty helping of NYT love, saying that the $1 app (which requires a $15 monthly subscription) "has the potential to shake up an entire industry." We first mentioned the service back in February, and while Steve wasn't quite as enthusiastic as David P., he did acknowledge that it's a great tool for small businesses or heavy phone users.
As of last night, however, the Line2 service is temporarily offline and the app has been voluntarily pulled from the App Store; as Technologizer reports, the company's servers are being targeted by a DNS attack, and the service quality was degraded to the point where Toktumi execs felt that it was better to avoid a bad initial experience for new users while they resolved the problem. Toktumi is updating users via its Twitter feed as to the anticipated resolution.
Seeing an app summarily pulled from the App Store, or rejected on specious grounds, has certainly happened before in the VoIP, audio and telephony space (in fact, just this morning the developers of Snowtape let us know that they're struggling to get their app through approval), so it was understandable that reader Arnoldo was anxious when he sent in an email this morning about the outage. There are many great graphic artists out there, as there are many great computer programmers. However, it's difficult to find a great graphic artist that also has great programming skills. For artists more interested in content creation than programming frustration, WoodWing Software's recently unveiled iPad-magazine tools may hit the spot. The tools, designed with an Adobe InDesign workflow in mind, aim to facilitate the publishing of iPad-based magazines.
WoodWing's Content Station serves as the main facilitator between artist and publication. In Content Station, the user can access and arrange (via drag and drop) the dossiers for a particular magazine brand or issue. Double clicking on the dossier will show the assets (images, movies, and InDesign document) that make it up. There, double clicking on an InDesign document will open it up in InDesign, where you can make your edits. When you're done editing the InDesign document or any other related asset and are ready to publish, publishing is just a click away in Content Station.
Part of the fervor behind the iPad is its media consumption potential, in particular with traditional print media. The digital revolution has given birth to web versions of newspapers and magazines that, while more timely and convenient for readers, has also presented revenue challenges for traditional print media in the name of ad and subscription revenues. If Content Station can reduce the effort involved in moving from print to digital delivery, that's bound to help publishers leap over the digital divide.

It's handmade and super cute -- I especially like the stylish icons, including the textPlus icon, which is Drew's own iPhone app.
There's also a stitched Home button (which you can see in the full picture), and there's even a pocket on the side, sized just right for an actual iPhone of course. Awesome.
