- Screenshot Plus and iWork: the poor man's screenshot editing suite
Filed under: Productivity, iWork
Despite their office productivity leanings, the iWork suite of apps (Pages, Keynote and Numbers) also serve as good image editors. With each app, you can crop and mask an image, as well as create alpha channels.
While a handful of useful paid-for screen capture apps are available for Mac OS X -- and many with very useful advanced features -- the one-two combination of the Screenshot Plus Dashboard widget and iWork can serve as an adequate pseudo screen capturing app.
While you can use Command-Shift-3 (or 4) as well as Control-Command-Shift-3 (or 4) to accomplish similar tasks, Screen Capture Plus also includes niceties, such as timed screen grabs and image file type options that, in addition to its straightforward functions, don't require much fiddling with.
After downloading and installing Screenshot Plus, make sure that it's configured to save files to the clipboard. As with many widgets, getting to Screenshot Plus's preferences requires a click on the little "i" on the bottom right-hand corner of the widget.Saving your snaps to the clipboard will allow you to easily paste them into iWork to edit and annotate. Keynote is the iWork app used in the examples here, but these apply across all the iWork apps as well. And in the example, I've pasted a screenshot of iTunes with accompanying annotations noting album art, arrow links, and the Genius Sidebar.
While you can easily use Keynote's (or Pages and Numbers) tools to annotate your screen capture, I find that having them readily available on the side of your document better facilitates the workflow.
Using the "Shapes" tool, you can place bubbles and lines of all sorts onto your document. And to edit a shape's appearance, just click on it -- or highlight a group of shapes, if you want to do it en masse -- and click on "Inspector" (Command-Option-I). There, you can customize the shape's background, stroke, opacity, and much more.
After you've completed annotating and editing your screen capture, select all of its elements (minus the readily available template of shapes) and copy (Command-C) them.
Now, launch Preview.app, click on "File" and select "New from Clipboard" (Command-N). Your annotated and edited image capture is now ready for you to save. PDF, PNG, GIF and JPEG are a few of the many file types that you can use when you save your image.

I haven't gotten a chance to read the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book, in which Seth Grahame-Smith takes the old Jane Austen novel and adds a little undead action to it, but apparently the brand is doing very well. Freeverse has announced that they've been hired to create an iPhone game based on the book. They tell us that they'll be putting "the perfect blend of zombie slaying action and touching romance narrative" into a 2.5D graphic game on the iPhone
Sounds interesting. The game is due out on the App Store by April, and while we were told previously that all of Freeverse's titles would end up going with Ngmoco's freemium policy, the recent Flick Bowling 2 didn't follow that model, so who knows? It looks like Freeverse does have at least a little leeway in what they release, and it's interesting to see that they're working on some licensed content as well (a game based on a novel, of all things, that's based on another novel). We'll keep an eye out for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and let you know when we hear the undead moaning through the Victorian walls.TUAWFreeverse working on a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies game for iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 22:30:00 EST. Filed under: Security
An iPhone got hacked in just 20 seconds at this week's Pwn2Own hacking contest at CanSecWest 2010, reports Ryan Naraine for ZDnet. Hackers Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf Philipp Weinmann demoed an exploit that allowed them to send a target iPhone to a web site that they'd set up online, and then copied off the entire SMS database on the iPhone (including deleted text messages) to their own server. The browser crashed during the hijack, but the hackers say that with a little tweaking, it would even be possible to nab the information without the user ever knowing that an attack had occurred. Halvar Flake also assisted with the hack, and he said that while Apple does have some protection in place for running malicious code on the iPhone, but it's not enough: "The way they implement code-signing is too lenient." You can see more technical information about the hack over on his blog.
The hackers aren't sharing exactly how they did the exploit -- as specified by the contest rules, knowledge of the hack is becoming property of the contest's sponsor, the Tipping Point Zero Day Initiative, who will pass on a report to Apple and only release details once the hole has been fixed. Safari and Internet Explorer 8 both got owned at the same conference, though details about those hacks are both forthcoming -- Tipping Point was offering up US$100,000 in prizes for exploits on these various programs, and it looks like the prize money has been well-earned.TUAWiPhone hacked at Pwn2Own contest originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 20:30:00 EST. The Parrot AR.Drone quadricopter was probably the coolest thing ever controlled via iPhone or iPod touch... until this. Dave Phipps has hooked up a '69 Pontiac GTO to his iPod touch -- he's been rebuilding these cars for a long time, and this particular one was picked up out of a farm for just $400. It's worth a lot more than that now, though, because he's replaced all of the wiring in the car and remotely connected it to his iPod, so he can start the engine, open up the doors, put the top up or down, and even control the radio all from the iPod touch.

It was several months ago when Microsoft last updated us on the progress of videoconferencing capability within Messenger for Mac; while version 7 added A/V support for corporate accounts connected to Live Communications Server, the crowd of personal users who connect to MSN/Windows Live were left out of the fun. Happy days are here again, though: a beta version of Messenger for Mac 8 is now available, and it adds A/V chat as well as interoperability with Windows Live Messenger 2009.
The app isn't free of rough edges yet, but MS decided to let it out in its current beta state rather than have users wait until Office for Mac 2011 ships around the holidays. How thoughtful!
You can download the beta from the Microsoft Mac site. It requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and only runs on Intel Macs.

Apple - Microsoft - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Mac OS X - Windows Live MessengerПереслать - Random House leery of iPad over pricing concerns
Filed under: iPad
We've heard that Apple is still trying to hammer down multimedia content, but print may not be in the bag just yet. Random House is apparently applying some last minute pressure to Apple, since the company says that it's not quite sure about how pricing will work on the iPad. Apple's offer is that it will take its 30% of profit in that 70/30 "agency" split, but Random House is waffling and claiming that they need to think about it before anything gets signed.
If you ask me, it sounds like they're just pushing for a little more control while they still can. iBookstore pricing all seems pretty solid, and most of Random House's competitors have already signed on. This means that, if Random House does pass on Apple's deal, not only will they not be selling books, they'll also be left in the lurch when the iPad does take off. Right now, before the iPad's actual earnings become anything but hypothetical, Random House can pose all it wants. However, I'm pretty sure that after April 3rd, Apple will have most of the cards in terms of making content deals on the iPad.TUAWRandom House leery of iPad over pricing concerns originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
App Advice has posted a first-hand look at the iBookstore, complete with some pricing specifics. Alexander Vaughn received a preview of the app (he doesn't explain where or how) and walked away with a screenshot and the following details:- Of the 32 books featured as New York Times (NYT) bestsellers, 27 are US$9.99. That includes the top 10 sellers.
- All of the remaining five are under $13
- The highest priced NYT bestseller, Poor Little Bitch Girl by Jackie Collins, is $12.99
The pricing war that's about to erupt between the Kindle, Nook and iBookstore will be interesting to watch. Apple has offered publishers the same deal given to App Store developers -- name your price and Apple gets 30%. After receiving pressure from its publishers, Amazon altered their arrangement to mimic Apple's. It seems that, by letting publishers name their price, there wouldn't be room for the $9.99 ebook in the iBookstore. According to Alexander's sneak peak, that's not the case.
We saw our first hint of iBookstore pricing when a leaked list appeared in February, and again after careful examination of the iPad's first television commercial. With one-third of iPad customers saying they intend to use their devices to read books, newspapers and magazines, the potential is huge. It will fun to watch this story develop.TUAWMore on iBookstore pricing originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 16:00:00 EST. Lego - Star Wars - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Steve JobПереслать - Audible.com downloads: there's an app for that, just not on the iPhone.
There are very, very few things I miss about my Treo, but one of the few is my favorite app: AudibleAir.
AudibleAir is an application from Audible.com that would download audio books from your Audible Library directly to your mobile phone. It is available on just about every popular smartphone you can think of except for - you guessed it - the iPhone. The reason is because of the iPhone SDK limitations, as Audible explains in their FAQ:
"Unfortunately, the iPhone Software Development Kit does not currently allow third party applications the ability to wirelessly add content to the iTunes application. We are in discussions with our partners at Apple, and hope to be able to develop an optimal Audible iPhone experience soon."
If Audible could download their content and then add it to the regular iTunes library, you could listen to it through the regular iPod software. However, Apple says they can't do that.
Audible could make an application to download their content to their own app, and then let you listen to that content even if you left the application. Of course, Apple says they can't do that either, as it would require a background to continue.
So, Audible would have to create their own app to download content. That app would also have to play the audiobook, and you couldn't do anything else while it was playing.
Even if Apple lifted one, or both, of those limitations, there would be another hurdle. AT&T does not allow for downloads over 20MB. Audible currently offers 4 formats: the first three are numbered 2, 3, and 4; and the last is called "Audible Enhanced Audio" (yes, there used to be a format "1" but it has either been discontinued or, at least, deprecated).
According to Audible, Audible Format #2 is "AM radio" quality, and about 3.7MB per hour. Audible Format #3 is "FM radio" quality, and about 7.2MB per hour. Format #4 is "MP3" quality, and about 14.4MB per hour. Audible Enhanced is "CD quality," at 28.8MB per hour. The iPhone is capable of playing back all of these formats, but the file sizes start to get big quickly. For example, the book I am currently reading (err, "listening to") is Bite Me by Christopher Moore. It's a 302 page novel which translates to just over 8 hours of audio. The Format #2 version is only 31MB, but the Format #3 is 58MB, Format #4 is 116MB, and the "Enhanced" version weighs in at a whopping 232MB.
To get around AT&T's imposed 20MB restriction, Audible would have to break up even the smallest format (#2) into two "chunks," and you would have to download them separately. It has been several years since I used it, but I believe the AudibleAir program for the Treo used to do exactly that. Sprint (my carrier at the time) did not have a megabyte-per-download restriction, and I once pulled over and downloaded a new Audible.com book while I was on a car trip. This was over the equivalent of Sprint's "Edge" network, but AudibleAir let me download the file while I was listening to the book, or segment, that I had already downloaded. Of course, it was plenty fast.
One of the many (MANY!) advantages that the iPhone has over my old Treo is built-in Wi-Fi, meaning that I could pop into a McDonald's or a Starbucks and download a new book right over the air, directly to my iPhone... if Apple would allow it. The rumor mill is suggesting that background processing for 3rd-party apps may be included in the iPhone OS 4, but we heard that one last year too and, so far, it hasn't come to fruition.
Trust me when I say that no one wants me to start writing a series of articles on the ways in which my iPhone is better than my Treo. The iPhone is significantly better in nearly every conceivable way. That said, I do hope that one day soon we'll see some variation of AudibleAir on the iPhone. However, in order for that to happen, Apple has to make some changes. Oh, and let's not forget that Apple would have to be willing to accept competition for audiobooks on the iPhone, since you can buy audiobooks through iTunes already. I certainly wouldn't expect Apple to do something as anti-competitive as blocking Audible.com in the hopes of driving more business to their audiobook store.

Urbanspoon is one of the earliest "locator" apps that I put on my iPhone. It offered up a pretty unique (at the time -- this was, of course, before "shake to undo") "shake to find" feature that solved the problem of a big group asking, "Where should we eat tonight?" Apparently it's still doing pretty well -- the app has just reached the milestone of half a billion shakes. Additionally, the website that the app was based on has been acquired by Citysearch, and the app has been installed more than 9 million times. That's pretty impressive. It's also a great example of how the iPhone's unique interface can really drive attention to a bigger brand.
Unfortunately, there's no information from Urbanspoon yet about what's coming in the future. This is exactly the kind of app (location-based information) that might not survive the jump onto the new iPad platform, so it'll be interesting to hear what they're planning to do going forward. However, as long as people are hungry, there will always be room for a food-finding app. It's good to see that Urbanspoon is still kicking.TUAWUrbanspoon shaking right along originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 13:00:00 EST. Adobe has put up a counter, and announced a launch event for the release of Adobe Creative Suite 5 on April 12 at 11am EDT. Though little is known about the features of CS5, Adobe had previously announced that it will give Flash CS5 the features to allow devs to build Flash-based applications and then export them to the App Store's .ipa standard. This will effectively allow developers to build iPhone apps in nothing but CS5. If you've registered for an Adobe ID, you'll be able to view a video broadcast of the launch event on Adobe TV. CS5 will also be Intel-only, Cocoa and 64-bit native.
Adobe has also announced a second beta of the Lightroom 3 digital darkroom software. Lightroom competes directly with Apple's Aperture software. On February 9th, Apple released Aperture 3. This latest version of the Lightroom beta includes the following features:
- Improved performance throughout the application for faster importing and loading of images
- Native tethered shooting support for select Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras
- Luminance noise reduction has been added to the previous color noise reduction improvements available in the first public beta, for outstanding overall high ISO quality
- Support for importing and managing video files from DSLR cameras for better overall photographic workflow control
- Improvements to the import experience in the first beta to reflect public feedback

Yahoo! yesterday introduced a new app called Sketch-a-Search to the iPhone. It's one of the first search apps I've seen that actually takes a new, novel approach to search taking advantage of the iPhone's multi-touch features.
It's simple and easy to use. You launch the app and a split-screen comes up. On the top you have a Google map (yeah, the irony) and on the bottom you have a blank slate. Right in the middle you have a green button. Drag the Google map around to your desired position, touch the green button to lock the map in place, then use your finger to draw a shape (circle, square, squiggly -- it doesn't matter) around any area of the map. Once your shape is connected at the ends your search results will immediately be listed on the bottom part of the split-screen.
Right now the app only searches restaurants in the US, but Yahoo! says they be launching additional local categories on an ongoing basis and eventually give the app international support. All in all, it's a very cool app and at the cost of free, why not give it a try? Yahoo! Filed under: Apple TV
The famous Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, has another wacky prediction for us: within the next two years, he says, Apple will release a connected HDTV.
Unlikely, to say the least -- the thinking around the virtual TUAW offices is that Munster's way off base on this one. Not only is the HDTV market pretty darn price sensitive (Apple is, of course, not one to compete on price), but Apple has always considered television "a hobby," and they're not likely to take on a whole new market unless they think they can do something different.
However, we'll give Munster his chance. He says that combining "hardware, software, and content will become a key selling point for TVs" in the future, and Apple does that very, very well. He says that the natural evolution for the Apple TV is to build an all-in-one solution with a screen for about $2000, and that Apple might even offer a subscription service in order to completely oversee the producer-to-consumer relationship. Admittedly, that does sound like something Apple might want to do. Munster also says that such a service could be ported to the iPhone and iPad for a wireless solution as well, and that makes it a pretty tempting idea.
Yet again, that presumes Apple wants to get involved in television, and with most of their attention already focused on bringing content to the iPad, that's a bit of a stretch. I guess we'll wait and see. Would you buy an all-in-one TV and subscription from Apple if that's what they decided to do?TUAWApple to make an HDTV within two to four years? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 10:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Even amateur prognosticators could have seen this one coming on the day that the iPad was announced. With Apple's hardware being so pretty and so full of excellent features, the only way any e-reader competitors could ever hope to beat them was with price. That's exactly what Sony is doing with their own Reader Pocket Edition, dropping it down to just $169 from $200. Of course, since the iPad is $499 (and competitors, like the Kindle and the Nook, are in between Sony's e-reader and Apple's tablet), there is a little more room for them to play with. However, someone's got to take the low road, and it looks like Sony is going to try.
There is one more weakness that might possibly arise on Apple's side, and that is selection. Apple is rumored to be scrambling for content deals, while Amazon is trying to make sure that their Kindle program sits front and center everywhere it can. If Apple can't lock down content the way it wants to, Amazon and Barnes and Noble may still have a chance to secure an audience. That, combined with their lower price and more focused nature as an e-reader, could allow them to portion off some of the market.
It's going to be a tough road ahead for anyone trying to compete directly with the iPad, though. Pre-orders have already been big, and as the devices make their way into the real world, sales will likely get even bigger.TUAWSony cuts price of Reader Pocket Edition, tries to duck iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 09:00:00 EST. Filed under: Gaming
Flurry's got lots of new data this week -- earlier, we heard that 44% of apps coming to the iPad are going to be games, and now they're saying that Apple is making huge headway into the gaming market overall. According to the latest numbers, the iPhone OS has nabbed 15% of the mobile game market away from bigger handhelds like the Nintendo DS and the PSP, and the iPhone itself has actually claimed 5% of the worldwide video game market. That's pretty astounding. In just a few years, the iPhone has picked up a sizeable amount of share in one of the biggest markets in the world, and Apple has done it all while actually selling the device as a smartphone.
What's even more amazing is that Apple has done all of this without actually making a single game themselves (Update: Reader Sunny reminds me that they made one). Video game console manufacturers have long had to deal with the relationship between first-party and third-party games -- Nintendo, especially, has struggled with getting their third-party software up to snuff. For Apple, however, there is no first-party; they just open up the App Store and let the sales fly.
Of course, that drum beating you hear in the distance is the iPad. While Apple has, again, focused on productivity and media rather than gaming, there's no question at all that a bigger touchscreen can, and will, create a whole new experience for gamers. The iPhone has come a long way in the past year and a half, but I'd expect the iPad to take an even bigger bite out of the game industry after all is said and done.
