  • Apple releases update to MainStage 2

Apple has released an update to its MainStage 2 software. MainStage is part of the Logic Studio suite and allows performers to bring virtual instruments and effects to live concerts. Full release notes for the update are available here, but the major improvements include:

    • Fixes to an issue where presets for Audio Unit plugins were incorrectly displayed.
    • Addresses an issue where incoming MIDI was forced to channel 1.
    • Resolves an issue that could cause MainStage to quit unexpectedly when using Undo after deleting a patch.

The 2.1.3 update is recommended for all users and weighs in at 222.1 MB. Mac OS X 10.5.8 is required, and the update can be downloaded through Software Update or directly from Apple's site.

  • 10.6.8 build 10K540 seeded to developers

The latest build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 has been seeded to developers. This build lists no known issues, and it has the exact same focus areas as an earlier build: AirPort, Networking, Graphics Drivers, the Mac App Store, QuickTime, and VPN.

There's no indication of when 10.6.8 will see public release, but with OS X Lion due next month, it's likely it will be one of the last major updates to Snow Leopard.

  • Facebook is preparing an iPad app

According to the New York Times, Facebook is finally making an official iPad app. While Facebook's iPhone app has been in the App Store from day one, it's been a long, long wait for an iPad version of the popular social networking site. When asked about the possibility of an iPad app last November, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg reportedly said such an app wasn't in the works because "The iPad isn't mobile."

It looks like that was an ephemeral "no" worthy of Steve Jobs. According to the Times, Facebook's iPad app has been in testing for nearly a year, and Zuckerberg himself has been closely involved in its development. People familiar with the app's development say its design is "slick" and well-optimized for the iPad's screen, and it includes photo/video uploading features tied directly to the iPad 2's built-in cameras.

Thus far, iPad users unsatisfied with the way Facebook's site functions on a touchscreen-based device have had to make do with third-party applications. I've been using Friendly for iPad, but I'm still curious to see how Facebook's official app turns out. As we heard earlier, Facebook is also planning an HTML5 application platform called "Project Spartan," but according to the Times' source that is intended to "supplement" the iPad app rather than compete with it.

Like the iPhone app, Facebook for iPad will be free. It is expected to debut on the App Store within the next few weeks.

  • Gameloft starts the Father's Day app sales

I suspect we'll see quite a few app sales pop up over this upcoming Father's Day weekend, partly because any holiday these days tends to attract a few lowered prices in the App Store, and partly because there will likely be a few lucky dads out there picking up a new iPhone or iPad 2 for their parenting trouble. Gameloft's the first company with a slew of sales on, including Final Fantasy ripoff Eternal Legacy, NFL 2011, Real Soccer 2011, WoW ripoff Order and Chaos Online, and Spider-man: Total Mayhem, all for the low, low price of just US 99 cents.

Gameloft also has a Twitter contest going on, but it requires a pretty gnarly retweet, so you'll have to decide if a $10 iTunes card is worth spamming all of your followers. Or do what I do, and keep a separate Twitter account just for silly RT contests like this one.

So congrats to all those dads out there -- just think, all of the diapers and whining and crying were completely worth it, because this weekend you get to pick up Eternal Legacy for just a buck. And stay tuned, we'll probably see a few more sales heading on into this weekend.

  • Apple patent wants to take the "long and awkward" steps out of making new friends

Twitter and Facebook might be looked upon as "simple" forms of social networking if technology from an Apple patent ever sees the light of day. MacRumors has discovered an Apple patent called "Ad hoc Networking Based on Content and Location" which describes a way iPhone users can meet people with similar interests that are in their immediate vicinity. In the patent Apple states that currently growing a social network on sites like Facebook and Twitter first require that you know the people you are adding and getting to know people based on similar interests can be a pain that "often requires a substantial amount of and time and effort because identifying new persons with common interests for friendships is difficult. For example, when two strangers meet, it may take a long and awkward conversation to discover their common interests or experiences."

Apple hopes to remedy that by allowing iPhone users to opt-in to automatically sharing their interests with other iPhone users in their area. If there's a connection, the two people can agree to meet in person. Information shared would be based on questionnaires people filled out, such as favorite books, activities and movies as well as from "automatically created usage data of the mobile devices. Usage data of a mobile device can be created based on activities performed on the mobile device (e.g., songs downloaded), a trajectory of the mobile device (e.g., places traveled), or other public data available from the mobile device (e.g., pictures shared)," according to the patent.

This isn't Apple's first patent in iPhone-based social networking services. In February 2010 a patent emerged that detailed how iPhone users could share their location information with each other so they could find one another in the same city, for example. However, the services in that patent required users to already know each other and be in the Address Book on the iPhone. The new patent revealed today allows iPhone users to meet people without previously knowing them.

  • Music label Numero Group opts out of iTunes Match

Chicago-based music label Numero Group is the first record label to publicly opt out of Apple's iTunes Match service, which lets users redownload any songs they have in their iTunes library to any device they own. In a short blog posting, Numero Group said that "we feel that a great risk is being taken by Apple and the major labels that have accepted the terms of this new product wholesale with not a thought beyond the 150M those so-called 'big four' will probably divide and pay to their top executives. By that, we mean that laws that protect compositions and copyrights for songs are, more or less, being trampled under these agreements."

In an interview with Ars Technica, Numero Group co-owner Rob Sevier explained that for small record labels like his there's not much benefit to allowing Numero tracks on iTunes match. Sevier told Ars that iTunes Match effectively "legitimizes" piracy and easily turns people into "pirates" for a one-time fee of $25. For a small record label like his, which may only sell 10,000 copies of a song, the potential for people to download pirated copies and then turn them into "legitimate" copies via iTunes Match isn't worth the risk. "We are primarily a physical goods company," Sevier said. "Because of that, we don't get too bogged down in bootlegging; we just can't stay up all night and worry about it. But for Apple to say that all your bootlegs are welcome, it just bothers us."

Sevier also discounts the notion that iTunes Match is a way for smaller labels to take part in revenue sharing, which would potentially make up for any illegal music matched on iTunes. He says that the potential revenue from iTunes Match won't make up for the increased rate of piracy, which could be as high as 1000% in his estimates. "It's not going to be enough to matter. I don't think that any of this will even filter down to artists. It doesn't matter what kind of label it is, it's just going to be an administrative mess dealing with all these micropayments. There's no way it's going to cover the hourly wage of someone working in the accounting department to even deal with."

Servier expects some of his customers to be unhappy about not being able to have their songs matched on iTunes, but he feels that someone needs to protect the smaller artists, songwriters, and producers. He also states that he could have quietly opted out of iTunes Match, but decided to blog about his decision in hopes that his decision will spur other labels in the industry to fully think out what joining iTunes Match may mean for the artists they represent.

  • Apple may freeze new Mac releases until Lion ships

Apple is rumored to be halting any new Mac releases until Lion ships in July, according to a report heard by AppleInsider. Sources for that site say that Apple management is so excited about the improvements and user experience Lion offers, they don't want to ship any new Macs until Lion is finalized, so that "buyers are afforded the latest and greatest Apple experience."

Apple apparently has new MacBook Airs ready to ship, but is waiting until it can load a gold-master version of Lion on them to do so. Also, while there are no hard rumors surrounding the next Mac Mini and LED Cinema Display, apparently those rollouts too are waiting for the final release of Lion, which is supposed to come out sometime next month.

And the Mac isn't the only platform waiting for new software -- apparently new iOS devices are also waiting to ship until iOS 5 is finalized. Apple wants to make sure all iCloud services are up and running so that new iPhone owners can take advantage of the full services iOS 5 and iCloud will offer.

  • iPhone and iPad are preferred by physicians says survey

Next time you visit your doctor and poke around his or her office, chances are you'll see an iPhone or an iPad lying around. A survey of 3,700 physicians by QuantiaMD reveals the iPad and the iPhone are the preferred mobile devices among those in the medical profession.

According to the survey results, 83% of physicians own a smartphone. Of those with a smartphone, 59% have an iPhone and 29% have an iPad. About 44% of those physicians without a smartphone expect to buy one in 2011. What will they choose? 39% said they plan to buy an iPhone and 27% plan to buy an iPad. How does Android compare? Only 20% see an Android handset in their future, while a lowly 7% want an Android tablet.

This dominance holds true whether the physician buys the device out-of-pocket or his practice funds the purchase. These iOS devices are certainly being put to good use. Doctors use them to look up drug information, choose a treatment path, learn about new treatments, help make a diagnosis and more.

(Ed: Plus, come on -- would you really want someone who buys a Windows phone to be in charge of your health?)

  • Apps, accessories and more for Father's Day

It's close to Father's Day here in the US. Hopefully you've got the perfect gift planned. Perhaps you splurged on the ideal man cave, or you went less extreme and bought an iPhone, iPad or new Mac for the awesome father in your life. If, however, you're still scrambling for gift ideas, here are a few of our suggestions.

    iPhone

There are several apps and accessories geared toward outdoor sports. The GPS Kit iPhone App (US$19.99) was just featured in Time Magazine and has a number of excellent outdoor uses, especially if dad's into hiking, biking or geocaching. Bikers can pair it with an iPhone bike mount such as this one from Bracketron ($39.95).

For the golfer, pair a golf bag mount with Golfscape GPS Rangefinder (currently on sale for $9.99). Golfscape just won an Apple Design Award and allows you to view distances on more than 37,000 golf courses around the world. You can see the distance to the front, center and back of the green and up to 40 mapped targets per hole. The golf bag mount ($29.95) is coming soon, so you'll have to give dad an I.O.U. for that part of the gift.

If you're got a new father on your list (or know a busy parent), pzizz sleep is now a very affordable $5.99. Our own Dave Caolo swears by it. "Software like pzizz can let you take a restful nap that you know you'll wake from in a timely manner," he said. "That's important (re: bus pickups). Short naps can be effective stress relievers and re-energizers. pzizz is a tool that helps you achieve that." There is also pzizz energizer to provide said energy boost.

    iPad

My father-in-law, like my husband, prefers to stay at home as much as he can. And while the women in their lives can coax them out shopping, both would probably prefer one of the many catalog apps that have sprung up for the iPad. We reviewed Catalog Spree and Catalogue for iPad recently, and both are worth adding to see which one your father prefers.

For car lovers, Ferrari has released several official cases for iOS devices. Only one is in the Ferrari store at the moment, costing a little more than $93.

In the retro gaming world, ThinkGeek has both the $99.99 iCade arcade cabinet or the just-released iPad Arcade Stick ($24.99 for one, $39.99 for two.)

    Mac and others

You can't go wrong with a good digital photo frame, and we like The Kodak Pulse frame, which allows you to add photos to the frame wirelessly. The 7-inch model is currently going for under $100 on Amazon.

To spruce up a suit or tux, try a pair of these open-source electronic cufflinks. iCufflinks from Adafruit ($128.99) look like a Mac's startup button and pulsate with a soft light for up to 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Feral Interactive Ltd. just brought Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga to the Mac App Store for $29.99, for dads who are gamers. Civilization V: Campaign Edition from Aspyr Media is also available for $49.99.

If you're still stumped for ideas, check out our past recommendations for that extra spark! Of course, you can never go wrong with an iTunes gift card, which are sold pretty much everywhere.

  • TUAW's Daily Mac App: Perian

    Perian for Mac

Have you ever wished QuickTime would just play all those random formats you've got? That you didn't have to resort to other programs, or worse converting everything, just to get them to play? You need Perian.

We've covered Perian a lot in the past, and for good reason -- it's a one stop-shop media plug-in that just works. Installed as a Preference Pane, it essentially gives QuickTime support for a myriad of file formats, video and audio codecs, and subtitles. Included in the mix is playback of MKV files with H.264, DivX and VP6 video, which combined with AVI support, should mean that almost any file you find strewn across the internet can be played. If that wasn't enough, you've also got FLV support, so you can play back all those videos you downloaded from YouTube.

With Perian installed you can turn QuickTime X into a proper video player, while still being able to revel in the sleek, minimalist Apple user experience with tight integration into your Mac.

Perian is available for free, supports OS X 10.4.7 and higher and, if you don't want to resort to programs like VLC, could be the solution to your file playback problems.

  • Is Facebook's Project Spartan going after Apple's app lock?

Facebook was apparently spurned by Apple in favor of Twitter for close integration in iOS 5, but the social networking giant is now moving ahead with plans to bypass the App Store with an upcoming HTML5 web app aimed at Mobile Safari -- Project Spartan.

This not-so-secret project has been making the rounds on Twitter, and is apparently aimed at breaking Apple's lock on app distribution through the App Store. Apple can't control what sites are visited by iOS users, so Facebook is looking at Project Spartan as a way to grab a piece of the app pie from Cupertino. Facebook is reportedly working with 80 outside developers including Zynga (Farmville, Hanging With Friends) and the Huffington Post (owned by our parent company, AOL) on a variety of apps.

TechCrunch (also an AOL property) blogger MG Siegler had a hands-on look at Project Spartan, and described how app purchasing would work: "Imagine loading up the mobile web version of Facebook and finding a drop-down for a new type of app. Clicking on one of the apps loads it (from whatever server it's on depending on the app-maker), and immediately a Facebook wrapper is brought in to surround the app. This wrapper will give the app some basic Facebook functionality, as well as the ability to use key Facebook elements - like Credits."

Credits is Facebook's in-house payment system, akin to the payment system Apple uses for app, music, and ebook purchases. By making the purchase of HTML5 games, news readers, and other apps available through a separate purchasing mechanism, Facebook hopes to profit from the almost 100 million mobile users who are part of the Facebook family.

Siegler notes that while Project Spartan is meant to attack Apple on one front, it also has the opportunity to help Apple in another way. By demonstrating the ability of developers to create compelling content in HTML5, Facebook hopes to pry those devs from Adobe's Flash technology, which is something that Apple would dearly love to see.

Project Spartan is expected to roll out for Mobile Safari users in the next few weeks, and it should be an interesting to see how Apple responds to this infringement on its turf.

  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me get a MobileMe refund

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

I renewed MobileMe in April for $99. It appears there will be no refund. Where's the loud and insistent outcry?

    Your rather ticked-off nephew,

    Z

    Dear Z,

Auntie totally gets where you are coming from (although as far as she's concerned, MobileMe is something that always happened to other people). Apple has renewed all MobileMe customers until the middle of 2012 but, honestly, what's the point?

Anyway, Apple has clarified its MobileMe refund policy on this Knowledge Base page. Unused activation codes and codes used for 45 days or less will be fully refunded. Codes used for 46 days or more will receive pro-rated refunds. Shipping costs and rebates will be deducted from any refunds. You'll need to provide proof-of-purchase documentation before submitting any claims.

You can contact Apple directly and request a refund by phone. This worldwide list of numbers provides contact information on a country-by-country basis. That's what Uncle Steve did.

He renewed at the start of the year, getting a few months of service but paying for the entire year. He might have gotten a couple of months more value than you but he's totally in the same boat. So Auntie made him call up Apple and demand, I tell you, demand that refund.

Here's what happened. He was quickly transferred to the MobileMe department, and the phone rep there recommended that he wait on canceling. "You can cancel your MobileMe subscription at any time for a pro-rated refund," they told him. "However, if you use MobileMe for email, contacts, calendar, iDisk files, and MobileMe Gallery, that information is going to be deleted and you won't be able to sync devices."

The Apple support rep recommended waiting until iCloud becomes available. "[If you wait until] those services are available to you, you can cancel the MobileMe subscription and receive a refund for the remainder of the year. You cannot reactivate your MobileMe subscription after you cancel it, so be sure that if you are going to cancel that you have alternative sources for email, and for syncing. "

Uncle Steve chose to wait. He's going to cancel after iOS 5 and iCloud are firmly chugging along this Fall and request his pro-rated refund at that point. You might want to wait and do the same. That's because Uncle Steve is very sensitive about his "mac.com" email address. He wants to keep it forever and ever, and hug it and love it and call it "George." It appears that he'll be able to do so. Yay!

He's more than a little concerned about the 5 GB free storage limit on iCloud, though. His email will chew that up in no time -- much like how Auntie's little Pekingese puppy Spunky Sue (AKC registered name "Spunky Sue Your Pants Off Champion Johnnie Cochran") chewed up Auntie's favorite slippers last week.

You'll discover a wealth of information about iCloud both in the press release announcing the service and in the web pages that describe it, so be sure to do a little reading for your homework.

Do you have any other concerns about MobileMe and the transition to iCloud? Let Auntie know in the comments.

    Hugs,

    Auntie T.

  • John Sculley discusses time at Apple, Steve Jobs

Retired professional athletes often reflect on the glory days and those moments when they were at the top of their game. For ousted corporate CEOs, apparently your time in the past with a company that is now flying high is cause for reflection. At least that's the case with former Apple CEO John Sculley (at right in the photo above), who waxed nostalgic for the good old days at Apple as part of an executive speaker series at the Hult International Business School in London last night.

Sculley is best known as being hand-picked by Steve Jobs to be the CEO of Apple during the critical years when the Mac was developed and introduced. Formerly the president of PepsiCo, Sculley ran Apple between 1983 and 1993. Although the company's revenues increased from $800 million to $8 billion in those ten years, Sculley was eventually replaced by the Apple board of directors as margins and stock price declined. Thanks to his awesome leadership at Apple, both Business Insider and Portfolio Magazine would add Sculley to their "Worst American CEO" lists.

But that hasn't tarnished Sculley's fond memories of Apple. At last night's talk, he discussed the differences between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates (mainly the fact that Steve is all about the design excellence while Bill was "all about landgrab" and "built this entire company Microsoft around shrink wrapped software."), why Jobs hired him in the first place (Sculley wanted to "sell the experience of a lifestyle" as he did at Pepsi), and lauds Steve Jobs as being the "one person" who launched the mobile era.

The last statement is fine praise indeed from Sculley, who was known for spearheading the ill-fated -- but groundbreaking -- Apple Newton MessagePad during his reign. Electricpig UK was in attendance at the talk and has more details of last night's event here.

  • Apple patent reveals possible Find My iPhone improvements

Apple filed a patent application detailing new security features that could potentially make their way into the Find My iPhone service. These new features would greatly expand the control each user has over his or her missing iPhone and include:

    • The ability to let users selectively protect files on a handset instead of locking the entire phone.
    • A scrambling feature that would prohibit access to sensitive data on the phone without taking the drastic step of a remote wipe. Unscrambling would be available when the handset is retrieved.
    • A remote recording feature that uses the mic on the iPhone capture the voice of the thief and his or her surroundings.
    • Remote messaging feature that would warn the thief of any recording or location tracking activity.
    • An enterprise-friendly feature that prohibits access to sensitive functions or apps on the missing handset.

Patent applications are not to be mistaken for future product roadmaps and many of the ideas detailed in them never make out of the concept stage. Fingers crossed that these security features are some of the few that actually land in their targeted product.

  • Yahoo goes after app discovery with AppSpot

We do the best we can around here to help you find the most interesting and helpful apps across the iOS landscape, but the job is too big for anyone to tackle alone. That's why it's nice to see Yahoo's pair of products aimed at the app discovery challenge, the brand-new App Search site and the AppSpot app.

AppSpot is a free quick search tool for finding apps on your phone, along with a recommendation engine that can (with your permission) review your installed apps and suggest new ones you'd like, refreshed on a daily basis. The recommendations seem a little offbeat (I have no idea why my 'News' suggestions include the Emma Watson app, unless it's tracking off the Harry Potter Lego game), but we'll see if they improve over time.

The app's 'slot machine' UI is basic but usable, and the search works well; it also includes a QR code reader for quick access to specific apps from the App Search site. You can click any category header to see a full list of recommendations in that category. On an app's detail page, the 'More apps you'll love' will show apps with similar themes or from the same vendor.

Yahoo's App Search is an app-specific search portal covering both the iOS and Android app stores. In addition to filtering by free or paid apps, you can also view App Store reviews and write your own Yahoo reviews if you like.

Once you click on a specific app's price or 'Free' button on App Search, you get the option to send a link to the app to your phone via SMS, go directly to the App Store page for the app, or snap a scan of a QR code using AppSpot to get the app quickly. The site is usable, although there are a few quirks -- you can't cancel out of an SMS request, for instance.

If you download and try the AppSpot tool or search on the App Search site, let us know how well they work for you, and if they help create some serendipitous discovery of new and cool apps.

  • iPad on iOS 5, the video

The release of iOS 5 is still a few months away, but we're getting a good idea of the feature set of the new mobile operating system from a number of videos that have been put together. The latest video comes from Gizmodo, and shows iOS 5 in use on the iPad.

The video (which inexplicably ends abruptly after about 3 minutes) was made by Woody Jang, who shows off everything from undocking and splitting the keyboard to notifications and "Dictionary Everywhere." It's a tasty introduction to iOS 5 running on your favorite tablet, the iPad.

  • Apple faces trademark infringement lawsuit over the use of iBooks

Apple is facing yet another trademark infringement lawsuit. This time the company must defend its use of the term iBooks. Apple is being sued by New York publisher John T. Colby who bought Byron Preiss Visual Productions and Ibooks, Inc during a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy proceeding back in 2006. These assets became available when founder Byron Preiss died unexpectedly in a car crash.

Ibooks, Inc began selling books in September 1999 and sold over a thousand books under the Ibooks name. Colby claims Apple's use of the term will render his company's use Ibooks and Ipicturebooks brand virtually worthless. He also points out that, though, Apple owns the trademark for ibook and sold iBook computers, the Cupertino company never used the term in book sales until the iPad debuted in early 2010.

  • iOS 5 weather app to include hourly forecasts

The weather app in iOS 5 has a new feature that lets you view the hourly forecast of the current day with a simple swipe of your finger. It's a minor improvement that doesn't compare with full-featured apps like Weather HD or Weather Bug Elite. But still, it's a nice touch for those that prefer the simplicity of the built-in app.

  • 5th Avenue Apple Store's iconic glass cube to be reinstalled

Apple has begun construction on the glass cube at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in NYC. According to building permits, Apple is replacing the glass on the building and upgrading portions of the surrounding plaza. The renovations will cost a whopping US$6 million which is just shy of the $7 million Apple originally spent to build the structure in 2005.

Plywood walls now surround the iconic cube and scaffolding is expected to go up in the next few days. Work should be completed by the end of November. So much for those summer and fall photo ops.

  • Shazam Encore updated with lyrics, how about iTunes?

Shazam has released another update for its paid Encore app, this one adding full lyrics of over 25,000 songs on the service from provider LyricPlay. It lets you stream the lyrics in real-time as the song plays, so you can sing (or even just read) along. It's not exactly a reason to shell out for the US$5.99 app -- I'm still using the free version to identify music that I listen to, and it works just fine for that purpose. But it's a nice addition to the Encore functionality, and it's good to see that someone has worked out how to make song lyrics available to listeners in a simple and easy way.

In fact, this makes us wonder just where iTunes is on this issue. We've seen rumors for a long time that iTunes has been trying to add a lyrics feature (and there are plenty of ways to just do it yourself if you'd like to do that). But especially now that Apple has figured out something as complicated as iTunes Match, surely lyrics shouldn't be that hard to do, right?

Unfortunately, the RIAA is still against it, and they've actually shut down any relatively easy solutions for quickly bringing lyrics into iTunes. It's a real shame -- especially for any music purchased from the iTunes Store (and because of the way iTunes Match works, all of your music will probably come from the App Store soon), we should really have access to the lyrics as the songs play.

  • TUAW's Daily iPhone App: 1000 Heroz

I first heard about 1000 Heroz, a brand new iOS game available from Trials HD developers RedLynx, a while back, and when I did, it wasn't clear just what it was all about. The game promised new content every day for a full thousand days (almost three years, according to my calculator), but didn't exactly say what that entailed. But now, of course, we know: the game is out on the App Store right now, and it's a platforming/racing game with players running a little man (or woman) along a track and trying to hit the fastest time.

It's interesting -- the physics are just a bit floaty, which adds to the difficulty of jumping your character in at just the right moment in order to move as quickly as you can up and down the hills. The real hook here is that there is a new level for the game every single day, and there will be new levels out, for free, for the next few years. That's a pretty solid chunk of content -- there are only a few levels now, but promising new stuff to see every day is a pretty good deal.

The game's just 99 cents on the iPhone (and a buck more on the iPad), and while there are a few in-game achievements and rewards to go after for each level, it's also connected up to Game Center for leaderboards. Each level also comes with its own hero and relic, so you're not just getting a new level to race through, but new graphics on that end as well. It's a pretty ambitious plan, and man, when you think of all the content you'll have in a few years, all for just a buck, it's a hard app not to buy.

  • Recco claims to provide hyperlocal restaurant savvy

The New York Times recently profiled a new iOS app named Recco. It's yet another social network app, but this time one built around restaurant recommendations. Rather than a service like Yelp, Recco is attempting to be extremely local, picking up restaurant recommendations not from people in your state or city, but from your actual friends and a few food experts.

It's an interesting idea, even if the Times' piece makes the app sound just like any other social network startup. The Times actually mentions that Recco only has 2000 users so far, which is adorably tiny in this day and age.

Still, if you have a circle of friends out frequenting new restaurants and ready to let you know which ones are the best, Recco seems like it might be an interesting experiment -- it's a virtual replacement for the kind of standard food chatter around town. Recco launched back at SXSW this year, and it's available for free on the App Store right now.

  • First panels from Steve Jobs comic book

Just the other day we told you about the upcoming Steve Jobs comic book biography, and now PC World has the first few panels of the work to check out. It looks ... good? It's definitely a more traditional affair, so Steve won't be displaying any latent superpowers or flying around.

Instead, as you can see above, it might actually be a pretty pertinent historical document on Apple's history and Steve's professional life. The original release claimed the book would show both sides of Steve's sometimes rough personality, but what we see here seems to be pretty common knowledge so far.

Note that these sketches are still being called work-in-progress, which is why they're in black-and-white and don't have any comic book panels. The final book is set to come out for US$3.99 and will be available in a bookstore near you.

  • Three sent to prison in China over iPad 2 leaks

A Chinese court has sentenced three people to prison for collaborating to steal information from Foxconn about the iPad 2 before it was unveiled to the public. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Shenzhen Bao'an People's Court found that the general manager of MacTop Electronics Company illegally offered a Foxconn employee 20,000 yuan, or about US$3,000, plus discounts on MacTop products for information on the iPad 2 last September. The Foxconn employee then paid another Foxconn employee who worked in the research and development department for digital images of the iPad 2's back cover.

Cover accessory manufactures can typically make a killing if they have their covers for new Apple devices out the day the new product ships, which makes information, such as the dimensions of a new iOS device, very valuable. The general manager of MacTop was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined 150,000 yuan. The two Foxconn employees were sentenced to 14 months and 13 months, respectively, and fined 100,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan.

There was no word on how the investigation led to the three employees, but Foxconn did issue a statement saying, "We cannot comment on matters of internal security, but Foxconn takes its commitment to protecting its intellectual property as well as that of its customers very seriously and undertakes all appropriate actions to safeguard against any violations."

  • Apple Back to School promotion starts June 16 with a $100 gift card

Apple's annual Back to School promotion begins June 16 and runs until September 20. There are a few things that are different with this year's promotion compared to years past. First, the promotion is starting about two weeks, on average, later than in earlier years. Secondly -- and most notably -- this year's promotion will not include a free iPod with any Mac purchased. Instead, buyers will receive a $100 gift card that is good in the Mac App Store, iTunes Store, App Store or the iBookstore.

MacRumors offers photographic proof of this year's promotion and its changes. Many may be dismayed over the lack of a free iPod, but it's likely Apple feels that with the success of the iPod touch, iPhone and Macs, it doesn't need to offer such an incentive to get people to buy this year. A $100 gift card for use in the Mac App Store and other online stores could actually be more helpful to students and parents. There are several companies selling textbooks in the iBookstore, and there are hundreds of Mac apps that could be useful in a school setting (like the iWork suite).

The fact that no free iPods will be offered during this year's promo also leaves the launch of the next iPods and iPhones totally up in the air. It used to be expected that Apple wouldn't launch new iPods before the Back to School promotion ended, as it was a way for the company to clear out inventory. Now, however, the Back to School promotion is not tied to any specific timetable.

  • Ad network revenue shows iOS and Android are almost tied

A monthly report from Mobile ad network Millennial Media paints a familiar picture of the smartphone market. According to impressions data, the iPhone is the top individual phone on the ad network, while the iPad is on the rise with a 29% jump in impressions from last month. Apple was the top manufacturer with a 30% impression share.

On a platform basis, Android was the leading smartphone OS with a 53% impression share, while iOS was a distant second with a 27% impression share. Rounding out the platform listing is RIM at 17%, Symbian at 2% and Windows Phone 7 at 1%.This impressions data reflects the number of times an ad is viewed.

Ad revenue from apps paints a different picture than the impressions data. In ad revenue, iOS and Android are neck and neck. iOS had a slight lead with 45% share, while Android had a 43% share. RIM grabbed 9% of ad revenue, while the remaining 3% is picked up by other platforms.

iOS is holding a slight lead over Android, but the green robot is closing in fast. In April, iOS was at 50% and Android was trailing with a 39% share. In May, that gap narrowed, and the two platforms may trade places in June.

  • Apple reportedly prepping first Apple Store in Sweden

Apple is planning on opening its first retail store in Sweden, according to Market.se [Google translation]. While Market.se doesn't cite its source, a recent Apple job listing for a Payroll Supervisor in Stockholm lends additional credence to an upcoming Swedish Apple store. Besides the Market.se report and the job listing, there's not a lot known about the Swedish Apple store.

It's likely that it will be located in the capitol of Stockholm. Apple does always like having its first store stand out, so it's probable that it will be in a renovated historic or aesthetically pleasing modern building in a high-traffic area. Apple just opened its 325th retail store in Lyons, France and plans to open a total of 40-50 stores in fiscal year 2011, which ends in September.

  • Angry Birds creators plan new game, location-based platform

Rovio's next big plan for Angry Birds is to add in some location-based features, according to GigaOM, with a platform it's calling Angry Birds Magic. The platform will use location-based information on a number of different smartphones (including, presumably, the iPhone, though there's some reference in the plan to near field communications, which of course, the iPhone hasn't yet included), allowing players to use where they are to both unlock new content and compete locally on leaderboards for a certain area. Rather than do what an app like MyTown has done and try to spread the content around to everywhere, Rovio says it's planning to be more strategic, using certain locations and certain features to try and monetize the game and engage the audience (like providing specials at a certain retailer during a sale, or other ideas like that).

The company is also planning a brand new app called Wine and Dine (no kidding), as well as an Angry Birds cookbook (featuring egg recipes, of course). Wine and Dine will still be in the Angry Birds universe, but it will supposedly be "more about the pigs."

Rovio also reportedly has more new games on tap (including some that aren't Angry Birds related), so it sounds like the team is keeping busy up in Finland.

  • iOS 5 for iPad images suggest higher-resolution display

Although the displays on the iPad and iPad 2 are pretty darned nice, TUAW readers and bloggers alike have wished for a Retina Display-like screen on our magic tablets. Now a tipster at TechUnwrapped has pointed out that several images found in Newsstand -- an iOS 5 feature -- and the Twitter framework are suggesting a possible higher-resolution display for an upcoming iPad 3.

The screen resolution on existing iPads is 768 x 1024 pixels, and in previous versions of the iOS, SDK screen backgrounds and other images were sized accordingly. The tipster has found evidence of images at twice the size -- 1536 x 2048 pixels -- suggesting that the next generation of iPad might include a display with that resolution.

What do you think, TUAW readers? Will the iPad 3 come with double the resolution? Let us know in the comments.

  • BBC iPlayer app to launch outside UK this year, Western Europe first

BBC's iPlayer is set to begin the first phase of its global rollout later this summer, according to The Guardian. The first phase of the rollout will target Western European countries and cost subscribers around €7 (US$10) a month, though the exact price is yet to be decided. Last December we told you that a subscription-based iPlayer was coming to US markets. That is still happening, but the BBC is first using a Western European rollout to make sure it gets the service right before expanding it to other countries. There is no firm date on the US launch yet.

BBC's iPlayer is an online "catch up" service in the UK that allows anyone in the country to view streaming video of the shows that aired on the BBC in the last week. The subscription-based BBC iPlayer will be different, however. It will not be a "catch up" service. Instead it will offer viewers "collections of programmes covering genres such as music, comedy, documentaries and natural history," according to The Guardian. Shows like Doctor Who and Fawlty Towers will be available to watch, but other popular shows like the soap EastEnders probably won't be available. It's also possible viewers will be able to watch past mini-series like How TV Ruined Your Life, also known as the most important television show in the history of mankind.

  • TUAW TV Live: More website design options than you can shake a stick at

Today's TUAW TV Live is designed to impart a lot of information in one hour, and to get my current obsession with iWeb replacements out of my head for good.

In case you're wondering why I've been writing so much about iWeb lately, it's because I've written three editions of a book about the Apple website creation tool for Take Control Books. Naturally, I started getting a lot of questions from readers of both TUAW and my book about what they should do if iWeb and MobileMe hosting disappear from the face of the Earth. Between thinking of answers to these questions and having a wealth of information from a community college class that I teach, I figured it was a good time to create a treasure trove of web and video resources for reference in the future.

I'll be demonstrating and discussing a variety of website design and hosting options today on the show, so if you have even a slight interest in the topic, be sure to join in or watch the recorded show later.

Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. If you're on an iPad, you should be able to use the Skyfire Browser to watch the stream, although you will not be able to participate in the chat.

We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you'll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the new TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

  • Adonit Writer is avaliable now

The wait is over and the Adonit Writer first-generation iPad keyboard case is now available. You can order one for US$99.99 right now from Amazon or from Adonit directly. Hurry though, the Writer will only be available at that price until July 10 -- after that Adonit will raise it to the full price of $109.99.

Still waiting for the iPad 2 version? It's coming along nicely. Adonit is nearing production on it and hope to ship it to Kickstarter backers early next month. It will be available after they finish fulfilling the Kickstarter orders.

If you read my recent review of the keyboard case for the iPad, you know that I was overwhelmingly positive about the Writer. Having now spent a couple of weeks with it, I adore it even more than I did when I wrote the review. It goes everywhere my iPad goes and frees me from having to bring along a laptop whenever I might need to write anything substantial. I also appreciate the flexibility to be able to comfortably type while sitting without a desk or a table. Your millage might vary depending on how you like to sit.

  • Talking Weather Alarm is great for summer travel and your nightstand

There is absolutely no shortage of alarm clocks for the iPhone, but I have recently tried and really like Talking Weather Alarm. Yes, it wakes you up to a variety of alarm sounds or anything from your playlist, but it also reads the local weather forecast to you and gives you a smattering of news headlines. The app has a light price tag of just US$0.99.

Talking Weather Alarm is far preferable to those sometimes flaky hotel wake-up calls and the other iPhone alarms that get you out of bed but don't do as good a job of keeping you informed.

The app has a variety of colors and clock faces, and it works in either landscape or portrait view. Leaving the app running all night can suck your battery, so it's a good idea to have your iPhone plugged in and charging. The weather info comes from Yahoo!, and uses location services to figure out where you are. News sources include providers from the US, the UK, Germany and France. The app comes with a variety of sounds (40) for alarms. They will ring even if your iPhone is running something else. If you want to use your own music, leave Talking Weather Alarm in the foreground.

No app is perfect, and here are some of my suggestions for improvement. First, Yahoo! Weather is pretty inaccurate in my testing. The developer says he will add more sources for getting the weather. There are plenty of news providers and categories, like business and sports, but you can only choose one. I'd like to get brief news headlines, maybe some baseball news and some tech news. As of now, that is not possible. The computerized voice is certainly adequate, but like all similar apps, it suffers from some pronunciations that it has trouble parsing. If you touch the weather symbol on the app home screen, you will get a nice forecast, but it isn't wide enough to properly display temperatures above 99.

Even with the caveats, this is a great little alarm app that will certainly improve. I still really like Night Stand for the iPad, but Talking Weather Alarm is great for both travel and sitting right next to your bed at home. • TUAW's Daily Mac App: AppZapper

    AppZapper for Mac

Uninstalling apps on a Mac is easy -- just delete the program from your Applications folder. But what about all the garbage of ancillary files that gets left behind? Zap 'em with AppZapper.

AppZapper is an uninstaller that does everything for you and makes sure nothing is left behind. It'll find things like Services menu entries, preference files and any other small files not stored in the .app file.

Simply drag-and-drop the application you want shot of, AppZapper will then show you what it's found and move it all to trash when you hit the "Zap!" button.

AppZapper also has a more advanced program finder feature that lists all the programs you have installed that are ready for removal. It doesn't stop short of programs either -- Preference Panes, Dashboard widgets and plug-ins are all fair game.

For those apps you want to keep, AppZapper also includes a "My Apps" feature. Simply drag-and-drop apps into a collection pane, and it will then create app "cards," on the back of which you can store license information and other things. Handy for keeping all your registration information in one place for those apps not in the Mac App Store.

If you're constantly installing and uninstalling applications on your Mac, an app like AppZapper is a Godsend. It's quick, easy, and most of all, effective. There's a free trial available on the AppZapper website that gives you five free Zaps, so it's certainly worth a try. Once you've tried it and liked it, the app will set you back US$12.95.

  • Next generation iPad / iPhone GPU licensed to other manufacturers

Imagination Technologies, makers the PowerVR graphics processor found in the iPhone and iPad, has announced that its next generation PowerVR Series 6 architecture has been licensed by six lead partners: ST-Ericson, Texas Instruments and MediaTek. The remaining three partners are yet to be announced.

Whilst not giving any firm details, an Imagination Technologies press release says that the next generation GPU (codenamed "Rogue") will deliver "unrivaled GFLOPS per mm2 and per mW for all APIs," with "a smooth migration path for developers upgrading applications optimized for Series5 to the new architecture."

Since Apple has a 9.5% stake in the chip manufacturer, and being that Apple uses PowerVR GPUs to handle the graphics in current iOS devices, we can assume that Apple is among the unannounced Rogue partners.

However, it's unlikely we'll see this new GPU in Apple's iOS products anytime soon. With the iPad 2 utilizing the current PowerVR Series 5 architecture (said to boost graphics performance by nine times in comparison with the original iPad), and the next generation iPhone 5 reportedly in final testing before its introduction this year, we'll probably only see the benefits of the Series 6 GPU in the following generation iPad and iPhone. But we can always hope.
