- Disney will not be a part of iCloud launch
Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke at the D9 conference this week, and said that while he considers the cloud to be a huge force in technology going forward, he's not sold enough to be included in the first round of Apple's almost-announced iCloud service.
Whatever Steve Jobs announces for iCloud on Monday (likely a music sharing and storage service, according to the rumors), will not include goodies licensed under Disney. Still, Iger lauded Apple for working on what he called a "digital locker in the sky," saying that a system like that would really be "a step in a better direction for the user experience." Hopefully Apple will nail down Disney's agreement for iCloud in the future, if indeed it is going to serve as a media storage unit in the cloud.
Meanwhile, Iger's plans seem much more local to his company -- rather than relying on Apple or any other company to sell and store his content, Disney apparently plans to "deliver entertainment directly to our consumers through a proprietary site or platform," said Iger. Seems a little inconvenient to have each content company set up its own platform to sell content (rather than going through Apple's store and service), but each to his own, we guess.

Переслать - Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirms unofficial armistice with Jobs, Apple
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen told Walt Mossberg during an interview that the dispute between Adobe and Apple over Flash is a thing of the past. Adobe and Steve Jobs went head to head last year when the Apple CEO publicly criticized the multimedia company and banned apps that were created using third-party tools like Adobe Flash. The heated exchange was covered extensively by the press.
It took several months but the dispute was finally resolved when Apple reversed its decision on third-party compilers and now lets developers use them to create apps. Though the press continues to bring up this dispute, it's unofficially over as far as Narayen is concerned.
Narayen also confirmed Adobe is supportive of HTML 5, the standard Apple has chosen for web video and multimedia on the iPad and iPhone. "We welcome the evolution to HTML5, and are actively contributing to it." says Narayen. This is good news to iOS owners who won't have to worry about Flash polluting their devices the way it does on Android.

Переслать - White Ninja crashes car into Greensboro, NC Apple store
A man reportedly dressed in a hooded white "ninja" outfit crashed his car into the Apple store in Greensboro, North Carolina. The accident occurred early Friday morning before the store was open. Witnesses who saw the accident claim one man abandoned the car and fled the scene without taking any merchandise. Details are sparse but the police believe this was a burglary attempt and not a random accident. Until employees can clean things up, the store at the Friendly Center will be closed for business.

Переслать - JP Morgan says iPad competitors slow production
A report from analyst Mark Moskowitz of JPMorgan Chase suggests the iPad is killing sales of competing tablet devices. Companies like Motorola, Samsung and Asus have reportedly cut production of their tablets by as much as 10% since March of this year. Demand for tablets such as the Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola Xoom, RIM PlayBook, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab is lagging, while demand for the iPad 2 remains strong.
Moskowitz points to the App Store as a key factor in the success of the iPad. Both the Android Market and RIM's BlackBerry App World have a small selection of tablet optimized applications. The iPad, though, has a robust App Store with over 65,000 apps designed specifically for the tablet.

Переслать - Force your Mac to update malware definitions (Updated)
You've updated your Mac with Security Update 2011-003, but how do you know if you have the latest malware definitions from Apple?
Macworld had a nice technical note on how to force your Mac to update its malware definitions, so we thought we'd pass that knowledge along. To start, you can check to see how old your malware definitions are by launching Terminal (found in your Utilities folder in the Applications folder), copying the following code, pasting it into Terminal at the prompt, and then pressing the return key:
more /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist

Переслать - Win big at Keynote Rumor Bingo on Monday
On Monday morning at 10 AM PDT (1 PM EDT), Apple CEO Steve Jobs will kick off the fun at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. TUAW will be liveblogging the event, and now you can join in on the fun thanks to the good folks at KrazyBig.
They've come up with a browser-based Keynote Rumor Bingo game that you can play during the keynote, blocking out squares every time Steve or one of the other members of the Apple team makes an announcement of a new product, service, or feature.
It's sure to be a hoot listening to the keynote, waiting for the moment when one of the assembled crowd of developers and press shouts out BINGO! at the most inappropriate moment.
Many thanks to KrazyBig for making Keynote Rumor Bingo accessible from any Mac browser or iOS device. I know I'll have the game up on my iPad during the keynote.

Переслать - Mac OS X Lion server to come as a paid for downloadable app?
According to Hardmac, Mac OS X Lion server will come as a paid-for downloadable app from the Mac App Store. One of Hardmac's French readers (Blaise) inadvertently stumbled across this help window when typing "install server" in the help menu of a beta build of Apple's newest, soon-to-be-released version of Mac OS X, Lion.
The help window states, "If this Mac isn't a server, you can make it one by installing the server app." It then goes on to detail the process of installing the app and creating an administrator account. The help menu ends with, "The Server app downloads the Server Essentials software package, installs it, and configures this Mac as a server."
However, as we've noted previously, Apple's own Lion marketing webpage states that "Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion." It reads, "It's easy to set up your Mac as a server and take advantage of the many services Lion Server has to offer."
Being that Apple currently charges US$499 for its Snow Leopard server package, it's conceivable that Apple may charge something extra to flip Lion's server switch via the Mac App Store. But we're unconvinced.
Mac OS X Lion, alongside iCloud and iOS 5, is scheduled to be introduced on June 6th by Steve Jobs at Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference.

Переслать - 10th anniversary retail poster tells of Apple's retail journey
Almost two weeks ago, Apple celebrated the 10th anniversary of its retail stores, and took the opportunity to launch iPads as in-store product information kiosks.
But, as MacRumors reports, there was also a mark of the occasion behind the scenes: a moving poster meant for store employees that artfully details the lessons gleaned from a decade in retail.
The poster begins, "In the last 10 years, we've learned a lot. We've learned to treat every day with the same enthusiasm we had on the first day. We've learned the importance of giving our customers just as much attention as they give us. And we've learned the art of hiring the right people for the right positions. We've learned it's better to adapt to the neighborhood rather than expecting the neighborhood to adapt to us. Which is why we spend so much time and energy building stores the way we do."
It continues with other revealing bits of information about Apple's retail stores: "We've also learned that glass can be much more than glass. We've learned that a 32'6" transparent glass box can stand tall even among the giants of the Manhattan skyline. That when glass becomes as iconic as the Fifth Avenue Cube, it can also become the fifth most photographed landmark in New York City. And we've learned that if you have to, you can close an entire street in Sydney to bring in three-story panes of glass." And, "We even built a full-scale facade of the Regent Street store in a Cupertino parking lot to be sure the design was right. Which taught us the value of seeing things full size."
MacRumors has transcribed the complete text. It's worth a read, even just to observe the energy and attention to detail Apple places in its retail stores.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Bumpy Road
Bumpy Road is a cute title for iOS and Mac. It's sort of a reverse platformer, where you control the platforms that a cute little couple in a car are running along and not the actual car itself. There are two modes to play. One is basically a Canabalt-style running game, with the goal being to get as far along the road as you can, grabbing some items for fuel along the way. The other is called "Sunday Trip" and has you traveling a fixed-length road in the fastest time, with items that can help your score at the end. Both are fun, allowing you place bumps and jumps in the road to push the car along. Another collecting meta-game, in which you grab pictures out on the road, helps build out a fun backstory to complement the great graphics and music.
Game Center integration provides scoreboards and achievements, and the stylistic graphics look great on a Retina Display or the iPad's bigger screen thanks to universal compatibility. Bumpy Road is a simple game, but its simplicity is put to great effect by a lot of artistry and polish, making for a really solid, fun, and even emotional experience. The game's available right now for US$2.99 in the App Store.

Переслать - Welcome to the new TUAW
Here's to new beginnings. TUAW has had iterative redesigns since our inception in 2004 but we've always followed the same old "river" format seen on "weblog" sites around the world. While a chronological order made sense before the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV were unleashed upon the world, it seems we have outgrown the rather limiting format of having a mere 10 posts on a page. We're also serving content to a wide range of users these days, from newbies to developers. How do we surface content in the least number of clicks to such a disparate audience?
Enter TUAW 3.0 -- currently in beta as we have a few important features yet to come. Read on for a full tour of what we're launching tonight, and a tease of what is yet to be installed.

Переслать - Upcoming Time Capsule tied to iCloud, caches software updates?
We recently reported that many Apple retail stores are running low on stocks of AirPort devices, and this is usually a strong indicator of an upcoming product refresh. 9to5 Mac has followed up on that and says its sources claim a refresh is indeed imminent. A new version of the Time Capsule, currently undergoing internal testing at Apple, will cache software updates for any devices that regularly connect to its Wi-Fi network. The device will "learn" which devices regularly connect to it and silently download updates for them in the background without user intervention.
This functionality will work for both Macs and iOS devices, enabling users to install software updates from local caches instead of waiting for them to download first. John Gruber of Daring Fireball also speculates this could enable devices such as the iPad and iPhone to perform software updates without being tethered to a Mac, as is currently required.
9to5 Mac points out this technology already exists in Mac OS X Server, although in a more simplistic form that downloads software updates of all types rather than device-specific varieties. They also speculate that these new Time Capsules could be tied into iCloud, caching music in a user's online storage locker or large, frequently accessed files, and also providing user backups to iCloud.
No one knows for certain when such devices will debut, nor can we say with any certainty that they even exist. All we know thus far is that current stocks of AirPort devices are dwindling at some Apple stores, and while WWDC is expected to focus on software, that doesn't specifically preclude the introduction of new hardware like a Time Capsule update.

Переслать - iCloud icon revealed, LA Times says service will cost $25 annually
In what turned out to be a busy day for the future iCloud service, AppleInsider posted images of banners unveiling the new service's brushed-metal icon at the Moscone Center, while the Los Angeles Times reported that iCloud will likely cost just US$25 a year. The L.A. Times also said Apple has sealed the deal with the last of the four major record labels for its upcoming cloud music service.
We reported Wednesday that parts of iCloud could be offered for free to those who purchase Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, but the $25 subscription fee for hosting music in the cloud might be a service that's separate from the free parts. The interesting thing, however, has to do with the revenue split. The L.A. Times says the agreement has Apple sharing 70 percent of iCloud's revenue with music labels and 12 percent with those who hold the songwriting rights. Apple will pocket the remaining 18 percent, or $4.50 out of every $25 subscription.
The article states that while iCloud will start with hosting music, it will branch out to movies, TV shows and other digital content, which we imagine will be the sort of content currently hosted by MobileMe. This fits with the rumors that iCloud will be superseding MobileMe.
We will have all of our iCloud answers on Monday, when TUAW will be hosting a live blog of Steve Jobs' keynote from WWDC.

Переслать - Pulse News app now saves and syncs
Pulse News app for the iPhone and iPad received a nice update today allowing selected stories to be saved and automatically synced to other Pulse News apps you have or retrieved via the web.
Sign-up for the service is free and can be done from within the Pulse News app. All that's required is a user-name and a password. When you see a story you want to save, click on the star symbol. If, for example, you did that on your iPhone, you can pick up your iPad and the saved story will be there too, assuming you have a web connection. The story is also accessible from the Pulse.me website.
Saved stories can also be sent to Instapaper, Evernote or Read It Later. If you import newsfeeds from Google Reader, marked stories will also mark them in Google Reader. After some difficulty with iTunes this morning, I was able to download the app for both the iPhone and iPad. Saving a story on either device made it immediately available on the other. It's a nice feature. With the links to the web component, I'd really like to be able to set up my master set of sources on one app and have them sync to the other, but at least for now, it's not a feature Pulse provides.

Переслать - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on iPad, X-Men Arcade out now on iOS
It's Thursday again and that means more big profile releases in the App Store. This week there are two big titles out to play with, in addition to lots of other smaller releases. First up, Konami has released a port of the old X-Men: The Arcade Game on iOS, the side-scrolling beat-em-up from way back in 1992. It's been updated with Game Center, but as with most of these old school games, the controls consist of a couple of onscreen buttons -- not exactly ideal. Still, fans of the title will enjoy it, and the US$2.99 download price ain't bad at all, especially since it's a universal version.
And EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is now available on the iPad. It's been out on the iPhone for a little while, but this high budget FPS is now playing on the bigger screen as well. There are three different control setups to play with, Game Center integration, and even full 6-player action on both Wi-Fi and 3G. At $9.99, it's the very definition of a premium title, but as you probably know, EA has a big sale nearly every holiday, so just wait a while and you'll probably see it cheaper.

Переслать - Tim Cook: Tablets will outsell PCs (no kidding)
Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope has been talking to Apple's higher-ups lately according to BI (including COO Tim Cook), and that they're extremely bullish on iOS devices, even more so than they've been in the past. That's hardly surprising -- not only would you expect Apple executives to be excited about Apple products, but the iOS platform has been rocketing up anyway. Anyone betting against it at this point would be nuts.
Still, Cook specifically is claiming that there's "no reason why the tablet market shouldn't eclipse the PC market over the next several years," according to Shope. And while it seems hard to believe that the much larger PC market could ever be threatened by tablets, that's exactly what's been happening lately anyway. Shope's report says he expects another big increase in iPad sales this quarter, which surely Cook and friends would agree with as well.
This also means that we'll see some interesting announcements about iOS 5 next Monday for sure.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily Mac App: Decompose
Cutting out people, objects or even text from images for creation of new ones is an old-photoshopper's favorite. But it's not as easy as it looks and, for the most part, requires a steady hand and some pricey software.
Decompose is a program that does one thing -- it extracts foreground objects for overlaying on other images. Now, for those of you who are proficient with Photoshop, you're not going to find much value in a US$29.99 app that extracts elements in this way. But for those of us who don't own Photoshop, or even Pixelmator, having a program that allows you just to roughly draw around your target object letting the computer take care of the rest is great.
In testing, I was a little skeptical, but on several, admittedly plain images, I was really impressed with the ease of use and end result of using Decompose. You simply outline the object within the "Contour" mask, fill in the rest of the image within the "Front" mask, and hit "Result." Decompose then does its thing, using Grand Central Dispatch as of a recent update, and shows you the result for fine tuning or saving as a color-corrected TIFF. It was fast, simple and a great alternative to much higher priced packages.
The problem is that Decompose is a single use program, and therefore, however clever the programming behind it may be, $30 could be asking a little too much. Still, if you're looking for a program that will quickly and easily extract objects out of photos, Decompose certainly gets the job done.
If you've got a quick and handy image extraction alternative to Decompose, help your fellow TUAW readers out and let us know in the comments.TUAW's Daily Mac App: Decompose originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 15:00:00 EST. Artistree Dual-Tip Stylus
Artists who use the iPad as a drawing pad often have to switch between using their fingers and styluses with different tip sizes to get just the effect they desire onto their digital canvas. Now Matt Geyster is trying to solve that problem with the Artistree Dual-Tip Stylus.
One end of the capacitive stylus has a rounded tip that can be used for rough sketches, while the other has a thin, pointed tip for detail work. In between is an anodized aluminum body with soft silicone grips that looks much more like a comfortable pen than a typical iPad stylus. Geyster has plans to offer other interchangeable tips in the future to make the Artistree even more useful.
Matt's project is a bit behind the eight-ball right now -- he needs $30,000 to start production, but currently has 36 backers and less than $1,000 with a little more than a month to go. If you're an iPad artist or just want a comfortable capacitive stylus to use for taking handwritten notes, look into backing the project.

Переслать - Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me join my life, my heart, my iTunes account
Dear Auntie TUAW,
Can you believe my wedding is in a few weeks?! That's got me thinking all of our digital goods that we now will both share.
While I would like to know if it is possible to combine 2 iTunes libraries and still keep metadata (like play counts and composers), I am more concerned with the number of Apple ID's that will be under 1 roof.
I've got an old Apple ID that I've made a LOT of purchases with, both hardware and digital goods. In January, I purchased MobileMe, mostly to keep our calendars in sync on 3 macs and 2 iPhones, but I would also like for that me.com address to be my new Apple ID for purchases in both the iTunes store and the Mac App Store (especially for syncing apps on all the machines).
Can I just use that ID on all machines? What happens to my purchase history, like all my apps, movies, and anything with DRM? And of course, my future wife has her own Apple ID as well. Is it possible to bring all this together? And don't worry, the band will play a polka the first set, just for you. Thanks!
Love and happiness,
Dave

Переслать - Foxconn iPad factory resumes operation
A Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China that was damaged in an explosion on May 20 has been reopened less than two weeks later, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The explosion, which killed 3 workers and injured more than 15 others, was apparently caused by combustible dust used in polishing workshops. Foxconn hasn't disclosed the results of its completed investigations, which Apple also reportedly took part in.
The reopening of production activities at this plant should relieve concerns of financial analysts, many of who anticipated a shortfall of iPad 2 units as a result of the incident. It was thought that the Chengdu plant accounted for as much as 30% of all iPad production and that the explosion would further constrain supplies of the popular tablet -- now analysts believe that many of the constraints are due to "yield issues on certain outside components" and that production of the iPad 2 will remain constrained during the June quarter.

Переслать - Pixelmator 2.0 announced, coming to Mac App Store later this summer
Today, the Pixelmator team provided a peek at the next version of their namesake image editing tool. With the code name of Chameleon, Pixelmator 2.0 is a major upgrade that is expected to ship later in the summer of 2011. Anyone who has already purchased the app via the Mac App Store for US$29 gets a free upgrade to the new version when it arrives. Along with the increase in functionality provided with the upgrade comes a new price point -- $59.
The new feature list is quite comprehensive. First, there are drawing tools (pen, freeform pen, convert, and path selection tools) that allow users to create and edit vector shapes. These tools also include pre-drawn triangle, line, rectangle, circle and custom shapes available on a new Shapes palette. The fill and stroke settings for these shapes are adjusted in a new Shape Settings palette, and shadows are easily added from this palette as well.
Probably the most anticipated new feature in the upgrade is the content-aware fill technology that can be used to delete unwanted elements in images. Want to get rid of that sunburned spot on your nose from your vacation photos? With the new Healing Tool or the regular selection tools, it will be easy to select an area and let Pixelmator fill it with nearby image content.
New retouching tools are part of the upgrade, including a Sponge Tool for adding or reducing color from image areas by dabbing at them, Burn and Dodge tools to darken or lighten portions of an image, and a Red Eye Tool for exorcising the red glow from eyes in your pictures.
Finally, there's also a new Smudge Tool for smearing paint or obscuring details by using a brush tip to do the retouching. The user interface has been streamlined and made easier to use, there's a new Eyedropper Tool for picking up colors, and a number of other toolbars and palettes that have been included.

Переслать - X2Y Sues Apple, others over processor technology
Good thing Apple has a capable legal team as yet another patent infringement lawsuit has landed on the company's doorstep. Apple, HP and Intel are being sued by X2Y Attenuators, a Nevada-based company which owns patents covering the electrode arrangements of processors. The lawsuit reportedly targets Intel's Core i7 processor and includes both Apple and HP because they use the Core i7 in their notebook and desktop hardware. As with any patent lawsuit, we will have to wait to see how this all plays out in the courts.

Переслать - Patent suggests location- and traffic-aware iOS calendar alerts
A newly discovered patent from Apple describes a system for generating an alert based on calendar events and GPS location information. The system would expand the normal preset, time-based alert system with one that dynamically uses your location. The system would tie your GPS location to your calendar entires and remind you when you are near an event or pull up directions to your meeting or event. It could also use weather information, traffic data, public transportation schedules and more to help get you where you need to go. The patent was filed in 2009 and was only recently made public by the USPTO.

Переслать - TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting
The Monster Hunter series of games is crazy popular in Japan -- when a new version comes out, many workers and students will take the day off, just like when a new Halo or Call of Duty title comes out here in the US. And now the series has arrived on iOS thanks to Capcom's new Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting, available on the App Store now for US$4.99.
This version is surprisingly full-featured -- while it doesn't have any RPG leveling elements, it does feature the "kill, loot, and craft" cycle that's made the series so popular. You can hunt down various monsters in the game, loot items of increasing quality from them, and then use those items to make better and better weapons and armor, allowing you to chase and fight more dangerous monsters. Unfortunately, the controls have been tuned for the iPhone, and they're not quite as precise as a controller. The swiping scheme is reminiscent of games like Fruit Ninja and Infinity Blade, but nowhere near as responsive.
Still, especially if you're a fan of the series, Monster Hunter is a nice take on the game, and Dynamic Hunting is a pretty good adaptation made just for the iPhone (Game Center and co-op play are even included). If you know what you're getting into, you can probably decide whether you want it at full price or not. If you're not sure, maybe wait for a sale -- it might be a bit too expensive to jump into a long-running series with this iteration.

Переслать - Apple's restrictions on iPad and iPhone giveaways
Philip Elmer-DeWitt has an interesting article over at his Fortune Apple 2.0 blog that discusses Apple's restrictions on iPad and iPhone giveaways. It's not well-publicized or even strictly enforced by Apple, but the Cupertino company has a two-page policy governing the giveaway or promotion of its iOS devices.
The policy prohibits you from using the word "free" as an modifier of an Apple products name in a prominent way. You still can run an iPad or iPhone giveaway, but you have to use the word free in a less prominent way and submit all the promotional materials to Apple for review. A handful of other restrictions limit how you can use Apple's product images and its font which is not to be used on or in connection with web sites, products, packaging, manuals.

Переслать - Gameloft's Order and Chaos MMO for iOS makes $1M in 20 days
Some people might have chuckled at the resemblance of Gameloft's Order and Chaos Online to the popular World of Warcraft. It's actually a near clone of the very popular Blizzard Entertainment title, squeezed down into the iPhone. But it turns out Gameloft will be the one who laughs last. The game has reportedly already brought in a million dollars in revenue, just in its first 20 days of existence.
That's pretty impressive. I presume that total includes the game's actual sale price of US$6.99, along with any other in-app purchases made. Of course, that initial revenue will probably be hard to replicate, but there's definitely a following for this one. That will encourage Gameloft to support it (more on that in a second), and it may even encourage other companies to step up with their own MMO titles for iOS. Including Blizzard eventually? We can only hope.
Speaking of that support, Gameloft has also announced that an update for the game is coming that will add new quests and a few metagame features, like new chat channels and the ability to transfer around servers. Future updates will also bring PvP gameplay and new dungeons to explore, so O&C players can look forward to that.

Переслать - New York's Tekserve gets major facelift
It's one of New York's great indie Mac retailers, made famous by Sex and the City and made successful by thousands of loyal customers... but, if we're going to be frank about it, it was a little bit cluttered and cramped. That's why the team at Tekserve spent most of the Memorial Day weekend ripping out the furniture and refreshing the store layout from the (newly sanded) floorboards up.
Store manager Paul Rechsteiner showed me around this week, pointing out the custom product tables (topped with wood recycled from the Coney Island boardwalk), the expanded staging area for repair consultations and the small assortment of non-Apple phones alongside the iPhone (Tekserve is a Verizon reseller now, which allows them to sell the iPhone). All in all, the changes make for a more pleasant shopping experience; there are still a few rough spots to iron out, but considering this was done almost entirely by the store's staff in just a few days, it's quite impressive.
Tekserve's official launch for the new store setup is this Friday, June 3, and they'll be offering discount specials until July 3 to commemorate the occasion. Check the website for details.

Переслать - iOS and Mac App Store back down
Update 2: Around 2 p.m. ET, we started getting a number of reports that both stores are back down again.
Update: As of this morning (Thursday 6/2) everything seems to be back to normal for both the iOS and Mac App Store updates.
Having trouble updating to the new versions of GarageBand and iMovie for iOS, or seeing the Twitter for Mac update download over and over again in the Mac App Store? You're not alone; we've seen several reports of issues getting apps updated properly, starting earlier today, and it's hitting our team as well.
No word yet about what might be causing the issues, but hopefully they're just transient growing pains; we'll check again in a couple of hours.
