  • Taptu 1.5 adds Instapaper saving, search option

We first looked at the newsviewer app Taptu a couple of months ago when the iPad version launched. Its combination of social streams and curated news feeds makes it a strong contender in the crowded news reader space of iOS apps. The latest version, 1.5, launches today and adds a few key features to the product on both iPhone and iPad.

Search capabilities have been souped up to include searching keywords within feed content along with feed topics. This helps with story discovery, especially with far-ranging/eclectic sites like Boing Boing. Readers can also save stories to Instapaper for offline reading.

On the iPhone, several of the UI improvements from the iPad version have made their way over, including stream resizing and color-coding. iPhone users also now get the Related Stories feature, allowing them to spot trends or see other coverage of a single topic.

Taptu is a universal app for iPad/iPhone and is a free download in the App Store.

  • iOS and Mac App Store updating may be fubar'ed

Having trouble updating to the new versions of GarageBand and iMovie for iOS, or seeing the Twitter for Mac update download over and over again in the Mac App Store? You're not alone; we've seen several reports of issues getting apps updated properly, starting earlier today, and it's hitting our team as well.

No word yet about what might be causing the issues, but hopefully they're just transient growing pains; we'll check again in a couple of hours.

  • Lonely Planet's Best in Travel free on iBookstore

Lonely Planet has a deal going on in the iBookstore to advertise some of its published offerings there. For a limited time, the Best in Travel 2011 book can be downloaded in iBooks for free. The book ranks the top 10 places to visit around the world this year, featuring special one-time only events and even a travel planner, along with value tips and other fun extras. The download is free until June 14, so feel free to grab it right now in iBooks.

Lonely Planet has other books for sale on Apple's service, and a quick browse through the top free books in iBooks shows there's some recipe guides and Apple's own iPad User Guide to be had right now. I've really been using iBooks a lot lately as both an e-reader and a reference app, and while most free ebook lists are dominated by copyright-free classics, hopefully we'll see some newer titles like this come out and provide some solid free content on the iBookstore.

  • Watermelon Express now BenchPrep, publishing academic prep texts to iPad

Educational app maker Watermelon Express has shifted gears and entered the electronic textbook market. The Chicago-based company, now known as BenchPrep, has over 75 educational apps in the App Store, most of which were interactive textbooks and test prep materials made for larger, more traditional textbook publishers like educational publishers like McGraw Hill and John Wiley.

BenchPrep CEO Ashish Rangnekar told VentureBeat that a single, stand-alone free BenchPrep app made more sense than multiple educational apps, hence the shift in business to interactive prep textbooks for the iPad. Rangnekar also noted that the future of educational materials isn't limited to etextbooks on the iPad. "Our definition of content is much broader than the textbook," he told VentureBeat; he said that in addition to books, BenchPrep will eventually branch out into other electronic educational materials such as videos and presentations.

  • AirPort devices out of stock in many Apple Stores, refresh imminent?

We've received reports from several Apple Stores across the US stating that some AirPort devices are either low in stock or out of stock altogether.

A reader let us know that all of the Apple Stores in his area are out of AirPort Express models, and one of our sources confirmed the Apple Store in his area is out of stock on not just the Express, but the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule as well. Another source says supplies at one store are not constrained and never have been, but the store "may have" received a notice to send its AirPort device inventory back.

We've heard nothing in the tech grapevine about upcoming refreshes to the AirPort line of products, but generally when Apple's inventory channels get constrained like this it's a good sign a product update is imminent. It's worth noting that this year's WWDC is widely expected to be a software-only event, so if the AirPort line is indeed being updated, it's unlikely we'll hear about any upgrades then... unless Apple plans on somehow tying an updated AirPort line in with its iCloud offering. Shared data running off of local storage like a PogoPlug? Could happen.

Of course, Apple doesn't have to unveil any such hardware updates at a conference, and if the updates are going to be nothing more than modest feature bumps they may just appear out of the ether the next time the Apple Store goes down.

Apple's online store still offers "within 24 hours" shipping times for all of its AirPort products, and not every Apple Store we've contacted has been able to confirm device shortages. However, it has been nearly two years since the last upgrade to the AirPort line, so it might be due for an update.

  • A unique iPad stand for around the house and travel

I've been pretty frustrated with the iPad stands I've seen. The Apple Smart Cover is clever but leaves the back of the iPad unprotected. Some of the cases that double as stands tend to be a bit tippy and if you try to type or actively use the screen they just fall over. I like lots of options for the angle of the screen depending on where I am, but many of the cases don't give you all that many choices.

Enter the Prop 'n Go from Padded Spaces in Seattle. It's a thickly padded case with 14 different screen angles. It's available in Microsuede or what's called Air Mesh. The case is designed to provide excellent airflow, and no matter how you push on the case it's simply not going to slide around or collapse. The model I tested, the US $49.95 standard setup, contains a pocket you can slip your iPad into or use to store accessories.

The accessory pocket is cleverly designed so your power cords, headphones and so on don't come in contact with your iPad. An upgraded case called the All-in-One includes a strap that turns the case into a backpack at $59.95. A lite version of Prop 'n Go eliminates the internal storage and drops the cost to $39.95. The cases work with either model of the iPad, and would store an e-reader, like a Kindle, if you don't use an iPad.

I reviewed the original iPad stand from Padded Spaces last year called the Prop it Up. I liked it a lot, but thought it was too big. The current model is much smaller in width and designed to fit the iPad dimensions. I think this newer model is a decided improvement over an already good product.

  • Textbooks swapped for iPads by Irish school

A small secondary school in Ireland is doing something extraordinary -- ditching textbooks for iPads. Starting in September St Coleman's College is the town of Claremorris in the west of Ireland will give student the option of learning from regular textbooks or specially equipped iPads, according to The Irish Times.

The school made the decision after consulting with students, teachers and parents for weeks. In the end, 96% of the people consulted supported the switch from books to iPads. Each iPad will be preloaded with a suite of educational apps.

Together the iPads and apps will cost €700 each but the price will be spread across a three-year period. School principal Jimmy Finn told the Times that the value for the money was obvious. "It is a bit of a unique idea, but we have to continue to move with the times," he said. Finn also noted that the switch to the iPad isn't mandatory and parents can choose to stick with textbooks for their children, though something tells me that if the children have it their way the choice will clearly be the iPad.

  • GarageBand and iMovie for iPad updated

The iPad versions of GarageBand and iMovie have been updated today. GarageBand for iPad has been updated to version 1.0.1 and contains the following new features and fixes:

    • Support for audio output over AirPlay, Bluetooth devices and HDMI with the Apple Digital AV Adapter
    • Import of AIFF, WAV, CAF audio files and Apple Loops (16 bit, 44.1 kHz)
    • Allows copy and paste of audio from supported apps into GarageBand
    • Addresses occurrences of GarageBand freezing while playing Smart Instruments
    • Improves overall stability and addresses a number of minor issues

A support document for GarageBand 1.0.1 notes now the new audio copy/paste function works:

"You can paste an audio file from an app that supports copying audio to the clipboard. GarageBand for iPad supports uncompressed audio files with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and 16-bit depth (the standard for audio CDs). Audio files copied from another app can be pasted to Audio Recorder or Guitar amp tracks."

iMovie for iPad/iPhone has been updated to version 1.2.1 and includes:

    • Audio plays from your HDTV when using the Apple Digital AV Adapter
    • Video plays full screen from Marquee to your HDTV when using the Apple Digital AV Adapter
    • Resolves some cases of missing media in projects
    • Provides more accurate clip grouping by date in Video browser
    • Fixes an issue where a project's background music would not fade in or out
    • Additional performance and reliability improvements

Both updates are free to existing users and available now on the App Store. Note that these updates may not show up for you if you search for them from the Apps tab in your iTunes sidebar -- Apple's two App Stores appear to be having flaky issues with updates today -- but the updated versions do show up on each app's page, and you can download the updates for free from there.

  • Idea Flight harnesses multiple iPads for presentation mojo

What could be more engaging than presenting from your iPad to a roomful of seen-it-all colleagues or clients? Sure, it's keen and different, but when you come down to it, slides are slides. Pushing up involvement by distributing printed copies of the deck is one way to level up the amount of information you can convey -- but the back edge of that sword is watching your audience page ahead in your carefully-crafted content, getting distracted by shiny objects and generally splintering off in different directions.

A small team at publisher Condé Nast has come up with one approach to reining everyone in during a presentation: a new app called Idea Flight. This iPad application is free for the audience ('passengers') and a $7.99 in-app purchase for presenters ('pilots'); it lets the pilot walk through the presentation on his or her iPad while the passenger iPads follow along in sync. Once the deck is done, the pilot sets it free -- then the passengers can roam about the cabin, so to speak, and explore the presentation at their own pace.

With full buzzword compliance (Dropbox integration, LinkedIn logins, GameKit and Core Graphics implementation), it certainly sounds good; you wouldn't even need a fully iPad-equipped audience, as you can present to screen from your iPad 2 while running the app. How well it will work in the real world of sketchy networking and complex PDF downloads is another question entirely. I'm going to check out a live hands-on demo of Idea Flight this Friday, so once I see it in action I'll report back.

  • Apple finally going after ipods.com domain

In October 2001 Apple introduced the now iconic iPod, and since almost the same time Apple has owned the ipod.com domain name. But in April of 2002, someone registered the plural of the ipod as a domain -- ipods.com. For some reason or another Apple chose then not to go after the owners of the domain even though Apple typically shows no mercy when it comes to its trademarks appearing in domain names.

However, as TechCrunch notes, Apple has suddenly moved to claim the ipods.com domain name after more than nine years. Yesterday Apple filed an official complaint; since it owns the iPod trademark it's likely that ipods.com will be in Apple's hands sooner rather than later. As noted by TC and many others, Apple strangely still does not own iPad.com or any other iPad-related domain names. That's a real head-scratcher considering the popularity of the iPad, the fact that Apple now owns the iPad trademark, and that the company has enough cash in the bank to pay out several million dollars to buy the domain if that's what it takes.

Thinking of grabbing an Apple-esqe domain name for yourself? Better check out Apple's guidelines on Unauthorized Use of Apple Trademarks which point out examples of domain names that people are not allowed to use:

You may not use an identical or virtually identical Apple trademark as a second level domain name. Not acceptable: "imac.com" "imacapple.com" "imac-apple.com" "podmart.com"

  • TUAW TV Live: The forecast is iCloudy with a chance of syncing

What better way to spend a late spring afternoon than to sit inside in front of your favorite computer watching TUAW TV Live? I mean, warm weather, clear skies and singing birds are no match for the excitement of me and the chat room mixing it up on Ustream.

This afternoon is no exception -- starting in about five minutes, you'll be able to use the chat tool and video feed on the next page to watch the show instead of getting a highly-overated and dangerous tan. After all, pale is the new tan...

The topic today? Speculation on what's going to be said at the WWDC Keynote next Monday. We know that iOS 5, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and iCloud are topics, but what might we hear about from his Steveness as "one more thing?"

From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. If you're on an iPad, you should be able to use the Skyfire Browser to watch the stream, although you will not be able to participate in the chat.

We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you'll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the new TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

  • Avast! Free Antivirus for Mac beta now available

Apple released Security Update 2011-003 yesterday with protection from the MacDefender malware and its variants, but some of our readers might want to do more to protect their Macs from malware. Avast has been a longtime supplier of a free (for non-commercial use) antivirus package for Windows that is unobtrusive and fast, so it was with a great deal of interest that I read a PR blast from the company this morning.

The company has just released a beta of avast! Free Antivirus for Mac for download and testing, and like the Windows version of the software, it looks pretty good. The company previously had a download for Mac, but as noted in the user forums on the Avast site, "The current popularity of Apple products also makes them more interesting for the bad guys so we thought it would be good to prepare for the battle sooner rather than later." The result is a product that is much more on par with the Windows product.

To install the downloaded beta app, you simply drag the application icon to the Applications folder and double-click to launch. The app uses Growl notification, so it helps if you have Growl pre-installed. The app has three shields that are in operation at all times: the File Shield, which scans the binaries of launched apps and all files that are being modified, the Web Shield, which monitors and filters all HTTP traffic coming from websites, and the Mail Shield, which monitors and filters all POP3 and IMAP traffic.

In addition, avast! Free Antivirus for Mac can do on-demand scanning of the whole file system, network volumes, or mounted removable volumes. The scanning engine is updated automatically -- I'm just happy that it doesn't speak "virus database has been updated" the way the Windows version does because that has a tendency to startle me.

Unfortunately, the app does seem to slow down page loading in Safari and I'm sure it would do the same with Firefox and Chrome. Of course, this is beta-ware, so the Avast team will most likely work on optimizing their code as the product gets closer to general release.

If you're considering antivirus software for Mac for yourself, relatives, or employees, you might want to take a look at the avast! Free Antivirus for Mac beta.

  • First day of hurricane season means new Hurricane apps

Today is the first day of hurricane season in the Atlantic, and Kitty Code has pushed updates to its popular Hurricane and Hurricane HD apps.

Hurricane for iPhone allows users to track hurricanes in real time. Not only can you track speed, direction, pressure, and your distance from a current storm, you can also browse historical hurricane data all the way back to 1851. Additionally, text bulletins give you all the latest warnings about storms in your area. Hurricane costs US$3.99.

Hurricane HD is the iPad version of the Hurricane app. It's just been updated to version 2.0 and sports a major UI change with added features including the ability to plot multiple storms (past and present) on interactive tracking maps, track hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones world wide, and offers push notifications for newly formed storms. Hurricane HD 2.0 is US$3.99.

  • Twitter partners with Firefox, adds new image sharing tools

    twittermbp.jpg

As TechCrunch suggested earlier in the week, Twitter announced a few new features today: improved search on hashtags and usernames, and a Twitter-branded image/video sharing service that may disrupt established players like TwitPic and yFrog (the back-end for Twitter's service is provided by PhotoBucket). The photo service will be live in the next few weeks.

The company also announced a partnership with Mozilla to deliver a custom version of Firefox that does Twitter search in the location bar; current FF users can get the same features via a plugin.

This upgraded suite of capabilities lines up nicely with the other TechCrunch tidbit from yesterday, suggesting that part of the image service's mission is to integrate with iOS 5. iPhone users would presumably gain a 'Send to Twitter' button in any image-enabled application, although there are hints that this might go quite a bit further. If it's part of a larger plan for shared services on iDevices, that could dramatically improve the multi-app experience for people working with different sorts of data; Richard points to this Chris Clark post from a year ago with some ideas about how that might work.

  • TUAW's Daily Mac App: QuickNotes

    QuickNote for Mac

With our Macs in front of us, many still resort to pen and paper for taking down little snippets of information. QuickNotes is a program designed to help wean you off the dead wood and ink, allowing you to quickly jot down information with just a few key presses.

Hiding in your menu bar, you can invoke QuickNotes either with a drop-down menu, or with Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+N, which pops up a small text entry window ready to take whatever text you want to type or paste into it. You can either hit Cmd+Enter or click "Add" to save the note, or click anywhere else or "Close" to dismiss the note. All your notes are stored in your menu bar ready for copying to a clipboard with a simple click or for re-editing.

There are lots of other ways of taking notes on your Mac, you can use the free Stickies dashboard widget or simply open TextEdit to name just a few; but for US$1.99 QuickNotes gets the job done easily and quickly, ever present in your menu bar.

Have you managed to ditch your pen and paper for your Mac? What programs do you use for quickly jotting down bits of information? Let us know in the comments.

  • DC announces digital comics will arrive day-and-date with print versions

DC Comics made a huge announcement yesterday regarding its entire line of comic books, basically saying that on August 31st, the company will restart 52 of its weekly publications, bringing them all back to issue number 1 and making significant story (and costume!) changes to many of its popular superheroes like Batman and Superman. But even more importantly for those of us in the comic-loving real world, the company will start publishing digital versions of its comics at the same time that print versions hit the shelves (known in the movie/video rental business as 'day-and-date' release).

Previously, both Marvel and DC have held back from publishing digital and print versions at the same time, mostly to give comic book stores and bookstores a chance to sell print copies exclusively. But no more, in DC's case -- as of August 31st, you'll be able to buy new comics on the iPad at the same time as in the stores. That might be the beginning of a death knell for a lot of comic book stores, but clearly DC has determined it's time to make the jump.

It hasn't been revealed yet exactly how these digital issues will be available, but I'm guessing the DC Comics iPad app will have most of them for purchase. Good news for comic readers on the iPad, and I bet we'll see Marvel follow suit with a similar announcement soon.

  • Hours after security update, new MacDefender variant evades it

And the cycle continues. Yes, just hours after Apple released a security update designed to smack down the recently-prevalent MacDefender malware, ZDnet's Ed Bott reports that a new variant of the bogus 'security' software has been released into the wild. This version is called "Mdinstall.pkg" and it works exactly as before, installing itself on Safari without any approval needed (as long as the default "Open 'safe' files after downloading" setting is on, which we recommend you disable). The timestamp on the file reportedly shows that it was put together as recently as last night, which means that these hackers are actively working against any defenses Apple put in place yesterday.

The security update from Apple -- so far only available for Snow Leopard 10.6.7 users, meaning that 10.5 Leopard users (not to mention 10.4 Tiger) are still vulnerable -- adds a new option in the Security preference pane, seen here. The anti-malware tool apparently checks in with Apple's servers periodically to update its definitions suite, just as you would expect it to.

So what's the solution here? Short of Apple simply removing the ability of Safari to open up files like this at all (which would of course hamper that functionality for folks who use it), the only real solution is to do what you've got to do on all computer systems subject to attacks: practice constant vigilance. It'll be interesting to see if Apple steps back up again on this one with another update (which would then incur another variant of the malware), but until then, users have to be educated and careful about what they click on in the browser.

If you're already fighting off an installation of the Mac Defender malware, be sure to check out our handy removal guide.

  • iCloud offerings might be free to those who upgrade to Lion

Lion and cloudsWhen Steve Jobs kicks off Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next Monday, AppleInsider suggests the iconic CEO may reveal an aggressive price-point for some of the Cupertino company's upcoming cloud services -- free.

On Tuesday, Apple announced plans to unveil iCloud, a suite of cloud services expected to replace MobileMe, and Lion, the eighth significant upgrade to Mac OS X, at WWDC next week. According to the post, people familiar with Apple's plans expect the computer maker to offer some of iCloud's services gratis to Mac users who upgrade to Lion.

But AppleInsider notes that some components of iCloud are not likely to be free for any customer. Apple recently negotiated new licensing deals with (at least) Sony, EMI, and Warner Music, and is expected to announce its own music streaming services on June 6. Much like MobileMe today and competing music offerings from Google and Amazon, Apple's upcoming music services will likely include a complimentary trial period, but customers should ultimately expect to pay a subscription fee to host content on the company's servers.

  • TUAW TV Live at 5 PM EDT: To the iCloud!

Next Monday could easily be one of the more important days in the long history of Apple, Inc. On June 6, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will take the stage for a keynote at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco to announce products and services that are going to have a profound impact on how users of Apple products will work and play.

TUAW will, of course, be covering the keynote in detail, but why not get a little speculation in before the fact? Today on TUAW TV Live, I'll be hosting our viewers in an online discussion of what they expect and want from Monday's announcement.

Will iCloud be available immediately after the Stevenote? Will it include Dropbox-like capabilities as well as the power to store your media in the cloud? How about integration with apps of all sorts? Will there be a new version of iWork for collaboration in the cloud? Inquiring minds want to know, and TUAW TV Live hosts and viewers want to speculate.

As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the demos start. To join in on the chat and watch the live streaming video, drop by TUAW about five minutes before the start time to get your instructions on how to participate. If you're unable to join us for the show, remember that you can always subscribe to the video podcast and watch the show at your leisure in iTunes or your other favorite podcatching app.

  • The Hit List 1.0 is out, iOS app awaiting Apple approval

The Hit List showed a lot of promise when we originally covered it back in late 2008-early 2009. The last beta on record came out in March 2009, and we had sporadic notice throughout late 2009 and 2010 that the task management program, and its iOS companion, was still in development. The Hit List was also included in a MacHeist bundle in 2009.

So it's with much surprise and pleasure that early adopters received emails Tuesday announcing that The Hit List is not only out of beta, but version 1.0 is available through Potion Factory and the Mac App Store. This version drops support for PowerPCs and adds a number of new features, including a Safari extension that allows adding tasks from your browser.

In addition to this, The Hit List for iOS was submitted for the App Store and is only waiting Apple's approval for its release. The Hit List for both Mac and iOS can be synced using a syncing service. The service, creator Andy Kim explained, is a custom solution that doesn't rely on the iPhone's push sync. Kim said that the push sync caused battery issues and when the app is activated on the iPhone, syncing takes no more than two-tenths of a second.

"If you have good Wi-Fi or 3G connection, it means that you don't have to wait long for tasks to show up on your phone while you're on the move. It's designed to be scalable to lots and lots of users as well," Kim said.

The Hit List's sync service come at the cost of $19.99 annually, with early adopters getting a free one-year subscription as a thank you for the wait. Cultured Code's Things, whose sync service is currently in beta, will also have a subscription cost. However, that amount is unknown.

Kim apologized to users for taking so long to release The Hit List. "This, its iPhone companion app, and its sync service were the single most difficult undertaking of my life so far bar none," he said.

The Hit List for Mac is US$49.95. It requires OS X 10.5 or higher if purchased through Potion Factory's site or OS X 10.6 if purchased through the Mac App Store. You can try it free for 15 days by downloading directly from Potion Factory.

We will have a full review of both The Hit List 1.0 and its associated iPhone app within the next few days.

  • Apple files for iCloud trademark in Europe

All the pieces are falling into place for Apple's iCloud service. On Tuesday, Apple confirmed the name and told us all it will be introduced at WWDC; Apple's trademark application hit the European Trademark Office later that day. The trademark covers everything from telecommunications and electronic storage to photographic services and digital devices/computers.

We still don't know what cloud services Apple has in store for its iOS and Mac users. Speculation points to a new streaming media service and a digital locker to store files online. MobileMe may also get a facelift, and some of its personal information syncing or email services may be available for free.

These are likely just the tip of the iceberg and Apple will wow us with much more next week. Anyone excited?

  • Tweeting from a Newton

Getting old technology to do new things in a creative way is fun. Take, for example, Tony Kan of the My Apple Newton blog who details how he uses twittermail, to send tweets via email and Twitter's now defunct RSS feed to receive his incoming feed. Though Twitter no longer supports RSS, the link for your account is still live and kicking. Best of all, both services are available for free.

Using a combination of services is one way to tweet from your MessagePad, but there are other ways, too. Some folks use Newtscape, a text-only web browser for the MessagePad, to browse Twitter's mobile website. Others like Ron Parker use email on the Apple Newton to both send and receive tweets. It's rudimentary, but works well on the iconic Apple device.

Anyone else out there tweeting from legacy Apple hardware? If so, how do you do it?

  • Prototypes makes iPhone mockups a breeze

This is a cool one, at least for iPhone app designers. Prototypes is a Mac app that lets you take those handcrafted mockups of iPhone screens and turn them into a clickable demo you can share with any iPhone or iPod touch user.

Prototypes takes just about any image format, including straight Photoshop PSD files. Once you drag them into your project, adding hotspots is as easy as clicking and dragging. Create a hotspot and then drag the link to whatever page should be loaded when it's tapped. You can assign a "back" action as well. All links can have a transition (in any direction) assigned to them. You can even add notes that display when a page is loaded and then disappear.

Aside from its ease-of-use, the real beauty of Prototypes is the free web service that comes with it. When you share a mockup from within the app, you get a ptyp.es url and a PIN. Have your client, your teammates, your boss or whomever log in to ptyp.es. They'll be asked to install the web app on their home page, after which they can enter your PIN and click through your mockup.

Prototypes currently only works on iPhones and iPod touches, but the developer expects to roll out iPad support in the next couple of months. At US$39.99, it's not a cheap investment, but if you deal with iPhone mockups regularly, this could be a lifesaver. The fact that you get the web service without a subscription makes the up-front price seem quite reasonable, at least to me. You can try out a pre-built prototype at the Prototypes website, and purchase it directly on the Mac App Store.

  • Apple's North Carolina data center now visible on Google Earth

Apple's humongous data center in North Carolina is now visible on Google Earth and Google Maps satellite view. You can see the entire building and two roads leading in and out of the compound. Oddly, there is no space for on-site employee parking, at least not yet. An eagle-eyed reader picked out at least one parking lot on the south side of the building for about 80 cars. There may be more.

The high-res image of the nearly completed compound just happened to appear the same day Apple confirmed its iCloud service would be unveiled at WWDC next week. Is this timing merely coincidental, or did Apple persuade Google to withhold its latest satellite imagery until Tuesday's press release was released?

  • TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Shadow Cities

Shadow Cities is an interesting title from Finnish developer Gray Area. It's a location-based MMO, in that you level up a character while fighting with other players and claiming territory, all of which is based on the real world around you and your iPhone. The game allows you to cast spells with special gestures, which are resource driven and set up to play long campaigns in small bursts of time -- it's designed perfectly for the iPhone and its various interfaces. I found the game a little confusing when I saw it at GDC, but that was an earlier version. Even if the game is a little complicated, it's rewarding when you figure out exactly what's going on.

And it's even more rewarding when you have fellow players around you -- if you're in a city such as New York or San Francisco, you'll probably be in luck finding some competition in the local area. Everyone else will still have neutral forces to fight against, but the game's more fun when you participate in the overall PvP campaigns. You can "beacon jump" to other cities, but things are much more fun when you're fighting for a home base.

At any rate, Shadow Cities is currently free in the App Store, and at that price, I can't help but recommend you check it out. A lot of people have tried location-based MMOs already (and I bet we'll see even more of these in the future), and while Shadow Cities isn't exactly the easiest game to get into, it does offer some good innovation in the quickly growing genre.

The market reception has been highly positive and in the coming year we'll continue creating partnerships and technologies that will bring the most trusted name in PC security to mobile and Wi-Fi users all over the world."

    New Partnerships
    · OneWifi, Hi-Tech Sound and The WiFi Company - Norton has entered an agreement with OneWifi, Hi-Tech Sound and The WiFi Company to provide Norton DNS to customers using the in-store Wi-Fi for a major food and beverage retail chain in the U.S. Norton DNS protects users who click on unsafe or inappropriate websites and provides a safer, more reliable, and faster Internet experience by using Norton Safe Web technology to deliver a variety of basic protection services like blocking phishing sites as well as known infected websites to prevent accidental downloads of malware and spyware.
    · KDDI Corporation - KDDI is one of the largest telecommunications companies in Japan and has begun offering Norton Mobile Security along with the sale of Android tablet offerings.
·T-Mobile Austria - T-Mobile Austria is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. Deutsche Telekom is one of the world's leading integrated telecommunications companies with around 128 million mobile customers, 36 million fixed-network lines and approximately 17 million broadband lines (as of March 31, 2011). The Group provides products and services for the fixed network, mobile communications, the Internet and IPTV for consumers, and ICT solutions for business customers and corporate customers. Deutsche Telekom is present in over 50 countries and has around 244,000 employees worldwide. The Group generated revenues of EUR 62.4 billion in the 2010 financial year - more than half of it outside Germany (as of December 31, 2010).

"As Android devices become increasingly popular, there is a greater chance they could be targeted by cybercriminals or more commonly, lost or stolen," said Maria Zesch, Marketing Director T-Mobile Austria. "We are delighted to now offer T-Mobile Austria customers the ability to secure their smart phones or tablets from physical and online crime with the powerful protection of Norton security."

In addition to these new global partnerships, Norton Mobile Security is available at select retailers worldwide, including a significant presence in Japan with 17 of the country's major retail chains offering the product.

    Product and Technology Updates
    · Norton Mobile Security for Android 2.0 Beta - Now features antiphishing technology to protect users who access email on their smartphone. Phishing occurs when hackers pretending to be legitimate companies use email to request personal information and direct recipients to respond through malicious web sites. Phishing is an equal opportunity scam, taking place just as easily over a phone or tablet as on a PC or Mac, so having built-in protection is essential. Norton Mobile Security also features remote locate functionality in addition to remote wipe and lock. Following a quick initial set-up, users can locate, lock or wipe their Android device with a simple text message in the event of loss or theft. Additionally, users can block unwanted calls and texts - all from a product that boasts Norton-strength antimalware protection. Norton Mobile Security has more than 300,000 downloads and a 4 out of 5 star rating on the Android Market.

    · Norton Online Family To Go Beta - With more than one million new worldwide customer registrations since 2010, Norton Online Family is giving parents more freedom and ease to stay connected to their children, anytime, anywhere. Norton Online Family To Go is a new mobile application that allows parents using Norton Online Family to view their children's online activities and manage each child's "House Rules" from their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, with other OS support planned this year. This new mobile application enables parents to:
o Receive Norton Online Family alerts
o See what websites their children have visited, what they've searched for, and who they've chatted with
o Configure and manage the "house rules" for each child including web browsing, time monitoring, IM chat monitoring and sharing personal information

    Pricing and Availability
Norton Mobile Security 2.0 Beta is now available as a free 21-day trial download on the Android marketplace.

Norton Online Family To Go Beta is now available as a free download on iTunes or the App Store. Availability on the Android Market is also planned in the coming weeks.

  • Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder: Review and comparison with iPhone 4 video

Podcasters and broadcasters have used the Zoom H2 and H4n digital audio recorders from Samson Technologies with great success for a few years. These very portable recorders are perfect for capturing high quality stereo sound in digital formats that can be easily edited by a variety of Mac audio apps. Now they've added HD video capture to a small handheld device, the Zoom Q3HD Handy Video Recorder (available through online retailers for about US$299). Since it's the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere summer vacation season, I thought it would be a good time to review this new device and compare its audio and video quality with another compact video recorder a lot of you may own: an iPhone 4

For many people who might want to capture HD video on the run, the iPhone 4 is perfect. You have it with you all the time, and you can edit the video on the device using iMovie. Zoom appears to be marketing the Q3HD to Mac owners who are looking for better video and audio quality than the iPhone 4 can offer. How does it do compared to the video capture capabilities of the iPhone 4? Read on for a full review and actual video clips for your comparison.

  • How to: Share iCal calendars without MobileMe

This how-to over at Gearz.de will help you share your iCal calendar around even if you don't have a subscription to Apple's online MobileMe service (a very forgivable offense, especially since its expected replacement iCloud service is now just a week away). Unfortunately, the writeup is a little technical, as you'll need to actually configure your local web server to share out and broadcast the calendar to anyone who needs to read it. That means you'll need to do a little console typing and config file editing, but as long as you follow directions, it should work just fine.

A simpler solution might be to use an app like BusyCal to do the syncing for you, or even just use a service that's already in the cloud, like Google Calendar (which is what I actually do). But if you're already tied to iCal, either because you've got a calendar on there or just because you like the app, following those steps should help you get sharing to anyone up and running.

  • Player piano rolls made on a Mac... and an Apple II

sciencechannel.jpgI'm a big fan of the Canadian TV series How It's Made, shown in the USA on the Science Channel. There's something hypnotic and soothing about all those lathes, molds, conveyors and such, producing the things that we all take for granted.

One of the older episodes was on this weekend, featuring the manufacturing process for player piano rolls (yes, they still make player piano rolls). I was pleased to see the pianist recording his score on what appeared to be a PowerPC Mac running some vintage of Mac OS X -- and then quite stunned to see the next sequence, showing the roll punch codes being loaded onto an Apple II used to control the punching machine.

Goodness gracious, as my grandma used to say. It's nice to see such persistence and reliability from this bit of Jurassic technology in a control system. Read on for the video.

  • Report indicates iOS users stick with platform due to 'lock-in effect'

Citing a report from research2guidance, GigaOM notes that Apple's market share of app downloads reversed the backward slide that began in 2009 and recently increased by 2 percent. This is a far cry from the doom n' gloom predictions many pundits have been espousing for Apple's platform, and it shows that Google's Android Marketplace still has a long way to go before unseating Apple's App Store.

The report speculates that a "lock-in effect" is partially responsible for users sticking with Apple's platform. iOS users, whether they're iPhone, iPod touch or iPad owners, tend to download a large number of apps, with a fairly high percentage of those apps being paid versions. The higher number of paid apps a user downloads, the more likely it is that user will stick with the same platform. This makes perfect sense; if you're like me and you've got a couple hundred bucks worth of apps on your various devices, that's a lot of inertia to overcome if you decide you want to switch platforms.

When you flip it around and look at things from the Android perspective, things don't look as rosy. GigaOM recently cited research from Distimo that showed paid downloads represent a truly minuscule proportion of total app downloads from the Android Market. 79.3 percent of paid apps on the Android platform have been downloaded less than 100 times, and only 4.6 percent of paid apps were downloaded more than 1000 times. A 2010 Distimo report (again cited from GigaOM) noted that Android users download a disproportionately large number of free apps compared to the iOS platform, and that trend doesn't appear to be reversing.

The end result is that for all we hear from various tech pundits about Android's ascending smartphone market share being the only metric that matters, other numbers are showing that not only are users more likely to stick with iOS due to app 'lock-in,' Apple's App Store also remains a more attractive market for app developers who actually want to make money with paid apps. CNNMoney's analysis of the same Distimo report paints a very stark picture: of 72,000 paid apps on the Android platform, only two have sold more than 500,000 (but less than one million) copies over the history of the platform. Contrast that with six paid applications generating 500,000 or more downloads just in the US version of the iPhone's App Store in March and April alone.

How many paid apps have you downloaded for your iOS device, and do you consider that an impediment to switching platforms? Let us know in the comments.

  • Apple renews Google partnership, Google Maps still in iOS 5

According to Engadget, in an interview at the D9 Conference Google's Eric Schmidt confirmed that Apple and Google will maintain their partnership in maps and search functionality in iOS. "We just renewed our map and search agreements with Apple, and we hope those continue for a long time."

This may mean that Apple has put a hold on plans to institute its own mapping service, or that the service was never close to deployment to begin with. Whatever the case may be, it looks like Google Maps will be the default mapping service for iOS 5 at the very least, and possibly for some time to come.

  • Spriteloq helps Flash game developers move assets to Corona

Spriteloq is a new tool for Flash developers looking to make iOS games with the Corona SDK, now available on the project's website. The Corona SDK is a third-party software development kit used to put together iOS games and apps (we've covered it and spoken with the creators before). It allows devs to not only develop iOS apps, but also spread them across various other platforms, including Android and even platforms like the Nook and Kindle. Spriteloq is a brand new plug-in for that SDK that allows developers of Flash animations to simply pull them in, whole hog, without having to rebuild from scratch at all.

You can watch a video of how it works on the website. You can simply export .SWF files from Flash, convert them using Spriteloq, then quickly bring them back into Corona to use in an actual app. It seems like a really quick and easy way to take a lot of work already done in the Flash environment and bring it over to a much more portable system.

Spriteloq and Corona are both free downloads, though you'll need a license for each to actually produce a game or app with them. For the rest of us, this simply means we'll see even more Flash apps making their way over to the iOS platform.

  • Responding to Security Update 2011-003 in verse

What is it about viruses and security concerns that automatically lend themselves to verse? TUAW doesn't analyze these things. It merely moves with the flow.

Here is our "Burma Shave" style overview of the Mac Defender/Apple Security Update crisis.

When those Macs caught 'la grippe'
Apple responded; its bud they nipped
    Security Update waits for you
    Bid MacDefender an unfond 'adieu'

  • Twitter to have systemwide integration in iOS 5?

TechCrunch reports that Twitter is on the verge of launching its own photo-sharing service in direct competition with existing services like TwitPic and yFrog. The big news for iOS device users is this service might have system-level integration in iOS 5. According to TechCrunch, the site has heard from several sources that "Apple's new iOS 5 will come with an option to share images to Twitter baked into the OS. This would be similar to the way you can currently share videos on YouTube with one click in iOS. Obviously, a user would have to enable this feature by logging in with their Twitter credentials in iOS. There would then be a 'Send to Twitter' option for pictures stored on your device."

John Gruber of Daring Fireball thinks the service, if it does come to fruition, may not be restricted to just photo sharing. "Imagine what else the system could provide if your Twitter account was a system-level service," he muses. Indeed, after installing Twitter for Mac in Mac OS X, there's a right-click option to tweet any hyperlink from Safari; if Twitter sharing is going to be baked into iOS 5, this seems like an easily-implemented feature. More out in left field, integrating Twitter into iOS Contacts could also allow users to post tweets to other users directly from within apps like Messages, thus allowing conversations begun via SMS to divert to Twitter and spare users from per-text carrier charges.

There's obviously been no confirmation from Apple that Twitter will be integrated in iOS 5, and TechCrunch hasn't heard about similar functionality for services like Facebook or Flickr. With WWDC and iOS 5's unveiling only a week away, we'll know one way or the other very soon.

  • Lodsys files suit against third-party App Store developers

Making good on its threats, Lodsys has filed suit today against several third-party iOS developers. According to Florian Mueller, Combay, IconFactory, Illusion Labs, Shovelmate, QuickOffice, Richard Shinerman, and Wulven Game Studios are among the developers targeted in the suit.

A series of defensive blog posts on its site explains Lodsys's rationale for filing suit. "Lodsys chose to move its litigation timing to an earlier date than originally planned, in response to Apple's threat, in order to preserve its legal options." Lodsys also appears confident it will win these suits, claiming it will offer developers US$1000 if its claims aren't held up in court. Lodsys also claims that Apple's position, that App Store developers are covered because Apple has already paid licensing fees to Lodsys and developers are doing nothing more than using Apple's own APIs, does not protect developers from Lodsys pursuing claims against them. "Lodsys has sent a detailed legal position on the license interpretation issue, in writing to Apple that has been previously only verbally communicated."

  • DIY breakout dock looks to get professional sound out of iPad 2

The iPad is an excellent device for creating and editing sound, but sometimes, just using that headphone port isn't enough. For that, DIY musician Qubais "Reed" Ghazala built this custom-made iPad dock, which plugs the iPad into a whole row of various sound-related ins and outs, from a line input and output to even a video interface. Yes, it's not quite as finished as a professional setup might be, but the DIY style works well here.

Read more of this post to watch a video of the dock in action that includes some tips on its construction in case you want to try putting one together on your own. Ghazala used a PodBreakout board to get all of the data he needed to and from the tablet, and a MacAlly iPad stand as the base unit.

  • Hidden app snaps pics of alleged crook (Updated)

Update: Josh reports that an arrest has been made and his MacBook is now in the custody of the Oakland PD.

Have you seen the man in the picture at right? If you live in the Bay Area and you've seen him with a MacBook in hand, you might want to consider calling the Oakland police.

Joshua Kaufman has images supplied by the Hidden app that show this man using a MacBook that was allegedly stolen from Kaufman's apartment. Through the use of Hidden, Kaufman was able to get some great pictures and the location of the computer, and posted those photos on his Tumblr. We picked this up after John Welch tweeted the link.

The Oakland PD is apparently understaffed, so Kaufman is pinging the Oakland Mayor's office for help in retrieving his MacBook. In the meanwhile, consider this a Amber MacBook Alert. We're reaching out to the Oakland PD for comment.

Update: We received confirmation that Josh Kaufman did file a police report on March 31, 2011, and that a MacBook was listed as part of the loss in the burglary.
