  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me propose on the iSly

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

You have been on at me a long time now to make an honest woman of my girlfriend... or at least ask her to be my fiancé, which might or might not be the same thing. But I can't, because I've got an iPhone. Can you help?

You see, we have no secrets from each other. If my phone is nearer than hers, she uses it. So if I call the jewelers to ask about a ring, or if they call me back, they will be in my Recent Calls list. If she happens to notice a strange number there, I know she trusts me but I also know she's curious. And the surprise will be spoilt.

Now I know that I can delete all recent calls from my iPhone. But I tell you, my dear Aunt, that if she accidentally notices a completely empty Recent Calls list, it won't be the surprise that is spoilt, it will be my face. It's not much of a face but it's the only one I've got.

So, dear, wise Aunt TUAW, what can I do? How can I delete a single recent call from my Recent Calls list and get my life moving forward? Apple's instructions give me no way at all. Do we have to go on living in sin, or do I have to commit the worse sin of switching to Nokia?

    Your affectionate nephew,

    Joe.

PS: No, I am not asking you how to delete single recent calls from the Recent Calls list because the information will be useful after we are married. Perish the thought!

  • Juicies: A colorful Kickstarter project with the Earth in mind

Kickstarter has been a wonderful way for entrepreneurs to get the money they need to fund a project, and we've seen our share of successful -- that is, fully funded -- projects here at TUAW as well as some that have been flops.

A few weeks ago on Earth Day, we received notice of a rather plain product with a different twist. Hawaii-based designer Laurens Laudowicz wasn't happy with the poor quality of some third-party iPhone and iPad charge/sync cables, and he found himself using a pen to mark cables to figure out which were usable with his iPad and which were not.

The result? Laurens started obsessing about cables, and decided to create something different. His Juicies cables all work with the higher wattage iPad, they're made of sustainable materials, and they come in ten different colors instead of the usual white or black. Want red, green, orange, or blue cables? You've got 'em, and four more colorful options in addition to black and white.

The project was fully-funded in just three days on Kickstarter. The funding period ends on May 23, and Laurens is hoping to use any extra funding that may accrue for some other ideas he has up his sleeve.

  • Fortune story goes 'Inside Apple'

fortune_logo.jpgAlthough subscribers to the print edition of Fortune magazine can get the full issue on their iPads this month, the rest of us may have to wait a bit -- or head to the local newsstand -- to read Adam Lashinsky's feature 'Inside Apple,' which relays several previously-untold anecdotes and company traditions.

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt over at Apple 2.0 has the preview, noting these tidbits:

    • Steve Jobs apparently tore the entire MobileMe team a new one in a town hall meeting after the flaky, foulup-filled launch of the .Mac replacement alongside the iPhone 3G in 2008. "You should hate each other for having let each other down," he reportedly said, along with several less-printable comments. Teambuilding 101!
    • Jobs holds "Top 100" offsite meetings for staff, which impacts both the lucky few and the ones who don't make the list.
    • There's a core team of engineers and scientists, the "band of eggheads," who were hired before Jobs took his second leave of absence for medical treatment... and they've got an important job to do.

Sounds like an engaging story; we'll be sure to check it out.

  • Crowded chaos, injuries at SanLiTun Apple Store in Beijing

It's hard to tell exactly what went down, but it can't have been good: 9to5Mac relays pictures and reporting from Mychinaviews and MacX.cn that some sort of disturbance/riot took place at the SanLiTun Apple Store in Beijing, China -- seemingly as a result of incredible demand during the China iPad 2 launch, although it's not certain.

The translated MacX story suggests that the crowd of would-be customers in front of the store got a bit out of hand, and that a 'foreign employee' attacked the crowd with a piece of steel rebar or a similar instrument.

Photos purporting to show the aftermath of the incident have a broken glass storefront and several injured people; we're reaching out to Apple for comment, and we'll see if there are any more detailed on-scene reports.

If you or someone you know is near the SanLiTun store, head on over and let us know what's going on via our feedback form or Twitter.

  • Conde Nast rethinks its iPad strategy

A few weeks ago, after Conde Nast announced the company was slowing the process of bringing magazines to the iPad due to the ability to deliver the scale advertisers want (ie: iPad magazine sales suck), I wrote that sales of magazines on the iPad wouldn't get better until publishers woke up and realized that not many readers are going to pay $5 to read a single issue of a magazine on the iPad.

Many readers agreed with me and, as of today, it appears that Conde Nast does too.

The New York Post is reporting that Conde Nast is set to begin selling digital magazine subscriptions on the iPad as early as next week. The New Yorker will lead off the pack, followed by GQ, and then Wired, Golf Digest, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Self, and Allure.

Single issues will drop from their current iPad prices of between US$3.99 to $4.99 an issue down to a reasonable US$1.99 an issue. Better yet, yearly subscriptions will ring in at US$19.99. Know what that means? The New Yorker is gonna have me (and probably many others) as a subscriber next week. As for current print subscribers, they'll be able to access the iPad editions of the magazines for free.

Other magazine publishers: pay attention. This is how the magazine industry saves itself.

  • Wrap your iPad in Ferrari leather

You may not be able to afford that Ferarri that's ready to wrap around your iPod, but how about just a Ferrari case? RazorianFly points us to these Ferrari-branded iDevice cases which allow you to put your iPad or iPhone 4 in the same rich, supple leather that goes into the legendary supercars. You can pick them up in either black or red, and each case is decorated with a metal cutout of the Ferrari Prancing Horse logo.

The prices aren't too bad as luxury cases go. The iPhone 4 case will run you around US$36, and the iPad case goes for about $94, shipping from Italy not included. When compared to high-end luxury cases that easily run over $100, that's actually a bargain. Much cheaper than an actual Ferrari, right?

  • Archetype goes free with Archetype Cadet

Archetype is a solid first-person shooter for the iPhone that didn't really get a fair shake when it came out. It was popular enough, but the US$2.99 purchase price probably kept a few more people away than should have played it. Developer Villain is aiming to fix that; the company has released a version called Archetype Cadet, and it's now a free download on the App Store.

The free version doesn't allow you to pick up ranks or achievements, and there are ads to deal with (though they're not too intrusive), but it will let you check out the Archetype experience without investing any money. The full app is still available, and it's just been updated recently with even more fixes to run even smoother on the iPhone and iPad.

If you're one of the players who've been passing on Archetype just because of the price, definitely grab the free version and take a look. I maintain that it's one of the more impressive multiplayer shooters on iOS, and now that it's free to check out, you should do so.

  • Square Enix-produced Imaginary Range comic book out now, free

About a week ago we heard Square Enix would be releasing an interactive comic for iOS, and now it's out and available on the App Store in the US on the same date as the Japanese release. While the early reviews are terrific, with art that's supposed to be really solid and interactive parts keeping everything enjoyable, the real kicker is the price. Square Enix has released the app for free. That's a solid deal, so if you're looking for a little something to read through and play with this weekend, there you go.

There's an HD iPad version as well, and it's also free. With this, those upcoming Chaos Rings titles, and the arrival of the great Final Fantasy 3 on the iPad recently, Square Enix is really delivering some solid titles for iOS users.

  • Is a Nuance and Apple deal in the works?

TechCrunch is reporting that Apple is in the process of some sort of deal with Nuance Communications, one of the leading companies in the field of speech recognition. Many readers may be familiar with Nuance's Dragon NaturallySpeaking software, however the Dragon speech engine is also licensed and used in a number of apps for Windows, OS X, iOS, and Android.

What could the deal be? The most obvious choice is an acquisition, but as TC points out, it would cost Apple at least US$6 billion to buy the company. Apple's got the cash, but even for them that would be quite a purchase. TechCrunch thinks it's most likely the two companies are entering into some sort of partnership "that will be vital to both companies and could shape the future of iOS."

Speech recognition has been rumored to be a big part of the future of iOS. Last year, Apple bought another speech recognition company, Siri, which itself is powered by Nuance technology. Perhaps with the release of iOS 5 we'll be talking to our phones more than using them to talk to people.

  • Skype security flaw already patched, but you have to download manually

There's a big problem with Skype on the Mac: and no, it's not its ugly UI (although that is a big problem). As noted by Mashable's (and former TUAW blogger) Christina Warren, the latest version of Skype for Mac has an unpatched security flaw that that allows a person to gain remote access to another's machine simply by sending a Skype message. The flaw was discovered last month thanks to the work of researcher Gordon Maddern from the firm Pure Hacking.

Maddern contacted Skype, who was reportedly already aware of the vulnerability and working on a fix. They then issued a hotfix for the security hole in a minor update (Skype for Mac version 5.1.0.922) on April 14th. However, responding to the issue in an official blog post today the Skype for Mac team said, "As there were no reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild, we did not prompt our users to install this update, as there is another update in the pipeline that will be sent out early next week."

What's that mean to you as a Skype for Mac user? The cat's out of the bag, and if someone who has the skills to take advantage of the flaw now knows about it, Skype for Mac users who have not updated to version 5.1.0.922 are theoretically at risk. Don't wait for the automatic update to Skype next week. Be sure and download the April 14th update right now by clicking here, or simply run Skype on your Mac and choose Skype > Check for Updates.

    Now about that UI...

  • New iMacs 25 percent faster than previous generation

A few days ago, we reported on Macworld's benchmark results for the new Sandy Bridge-equipped iMacs. Macworld found them to be, on average, about 16 percent faster in the Speedmark 6.5 test than the previous generation. Now Primate Labs has put together a report detailing the iMac's speed increases based on user-submitted Geekbench 2 results.

According to Primate Labs, the new Sandy Bridge iMacs are up to 25 percent faster than their Lynnfield predecessors. 25 percent isn't earth-shattering, but it's a nice bump for the newest models. When Primate Labs pitted the Sandy Bridge iMacs against the two-generations-old Wolfdale Core 2 Duo iMacs, however, the newest iMacs ran a whopping 70 percent faster. Time for an upgrade, Core 2 Duo iMac owners?

  • Apple launches 'Apple Customer Pulse' feedback site

Apple has launched a new site called Apple Customer Pulse which allows select users of Apple's products to submit feedback on a variety of issues. Currently the site is only accessible to those users who have received an email invite from Apple. Several TUAW reads have contacted us saying they have received invites, but there is no firm way to know what the total numbers of invitees are or how Apple goes about choosing them.

The site launched quietly a few weeks ago and represents an expanded effort on Apple's part to generate relevant and focused customer feedback. MacRumors did some digging and found out the site is administered by Socratic Technologies, a San Francisco-based market research firm that has worked with other tech companies, including Adobe. A WhoIs search lists the domain management MarkMonitor Brand Protection, a company Apple frequently uses to secure domain names. Additionally, the administrative registrant contact is Apple's Ken Eddings.

  • Rovio up for three Develop Awards

Rovio, maker of Angry Birds, has been nominated for three different awards at this year's Develop Awards, honoring some of the best names in video game and interactive software development. The Finnish company has been nominated for Best Use of a License or IP (presumably for the Angry Birds Rio spinoff), Best Indie Studio, and Best Handheld Studio for its work on the mobile platforms.

There are a few other interesting names on the list (including NaturalMotion, who've made a few iOS games themselves, in addition to their physics engines, and Andreas Illiger, maker of the great Tiny Wings), though things seem to be aimed more towards the European continent than anywhere else.

Still, it'll be interesting to see who gets honored. The awards are to be given away in Brighton, England on July 20th of this year. We'll be sure to ask former TUAWer and Brighton native Nik Fletcher to sneak into the ceremony.

  • New iMac, MacBook Pro support 450 Mbit/sec Wi-Fi

HardMac is reporting that the newest iMacs released this week support up to 450 Mbit/sec Wi-Fi, following in the footsteps of the latest MacBook Pros. To accomplish this, Apple added a third antenna to the machines. Each antenna is capable of a data rate of 150 Mbit/sec. Combined, the three antennas achieve the 450 Mbit/sec speeds using the multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) wireless standard.

MacRumors notes that in order to actually take advantage of the 450 Mbit/sec speed, you'll need to have a compatible wireless router, such as the latest AirPort Extreme or TimeCapsule, and be sure the settings are configured to use both the 5 GHz band and also the use of wide channels.

UPDATE: As noted by AppleInsider, the newest iMacs and MacBook Pros must be running a developer build of Lion to take advantage of the 450 Mbit/sec speeds. Non-devs will need to wait until you update your machines to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion when it is released later this summer.

  • Ramp Champ goes free in App Store

Ramp Champ, the Icon Factory's delightful skeeball app, has gone free. Originally $1.99, the app is now yours for the downloading. The Icon Factory's Craig Hockenberry told TUAW, "We're pleased to put the fun and addictive play of the original Ramp Champ into the hands of thousands of new users, all for free."

The new pricing does not affect in-app purchases of premium courses. Hockenberry added, "Players who love the built-in ramps can easily add new ones with a 99¢ in-app purchase."

The courses that ship free with the app are plenty of fun to play with. I paid full price when Ramp Champ first shipped and found it well worth my money. Now you can spend your money on adding extra ramps instead of buying the basic ones. You'll be well rewarded with the game play.

  • TUAW's Daily Mac App: Rear View Mirror

    Rear View Mirror

The Mac App Store is full of useful apps, but it's also full of pretty silly little ones. Today's Daily Mac App is a mix of both.

Rear View Mirror, is an app that helps you see what's happening behind you using your iSight or FaceTime HD camera. It essentially gives you a rearview mirror analogous to what you have in a car, displaying a video feed from your camera in a re-sizable simulation of said mirror.

The app will display images from the top left, top right, the entire top, or the full feed from your camera. The idea is that you place it at the top of your screen somewhere out of the way, allowing you to see anyone sneaking up on you from behind.

If you've ever worked in a coffee shop, library or any other public place where people come and go behind you, you've been worried about people sneaking up on you from behind or if you're just plain nosy, then this fun little US$0.99 Mac App Store app is for you.

  • Microsoft wants buyers to 'do the math' and select a netbook over a MacBook Air

    microsoft ad campaign

As Ronald Reagan once famously said, "There you go again." Microsoft has unleashed some new ads in Canada that suggest if you buy a PC laptop instead of a Mac you can use the money you save to take a trip to Hawaii.

Saving money? That sounds good... until you look at the comparisons. Microsoft's chart compares various Mac laptops with PC counterparts from HP, Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Asus and others. True enough, Apple products are often more expensive than Windows laptops at first glance, especially if you don't perceive any value in running Mac OS X and avoiding aggravation, malware and compatibility headaches. While Windows 7 is pretty good, I use it alongside Mac OS X and find that there is no comparison.

Above you'll see Microsoft's pairing of the 11" MacBook Air with three US$300-ish netbooks. While the price comparison is stark, the fact is that these netbooks are not even close to the MacBook Air where it counts, and to put them in the same category is silly at best and deliberately deceptive at worst.

The Core 2 Duo chip in the MBA is faster than the netbook Atom or E-Series CPUs, the 64 GB "HardDrive" in the Air is a super-speedy SSD that charges up performance even further, there's no comparison on battery life where the Air shines; really the only comparable spec on these machines is the screen resolution. Oh, and that HP Pavilion DM1 sitting in the middle of the lineup? I'm sure it's nice enough, but it weighs in at 3.46 lbs (1.56 kg) -- 150% as massive as the slender, featherweight 2.3 lb (1.08 kg) 11" Air. How much do you have to save on chiropractor bills before the 'inexpensive' netbook stops being such a bargain?

Microsoft runs these campaigns when it gets worried about its OS market share slipping. Now that Apple is ahead of MS in profits, tablets, and smartphones, maybe that concern is justified. Of course, Apple slammed Microsoft many times with the "Get A Mac" campaign, but at least the ads were funny and generally grounded in truth -- working off of Apple's underdog status in the PC market, rather than playing defense as MS is doing here.

Microsoft, as it has in some past campaigns, is doing its best to mislead, and trying to sway would-be buyers on price alone when in fact MacBook Air buyers aren't looking for the cheapest possible laptop. It would have been really interesting to put those netbooks alongside the iPad in a similar graphic, but no way does Microsoft want to plant the seed of doubt in consumers' minds that they might consider a speedy, light, 10-hour battery Apple tablet instead of a tiny, underpowered Windows netbook.

I doubt these new ads will put a dent in Apple's ascendant Mac sales, but they will fuel the inevitable flame wars between advocates for each platform.

  • Every "Get A Mac" ad in chronological order

You'll remember the long-running Get A Mac TV ads that had Justin Long and John Hodgman playing a personified Mac and PC, respectively. John, as "PC," often had troubles that didn't affect his friend Mac. Despite this, their friendship remained intact. So did the campaign.

By the time the campaign ended in 2009, a total of 66 ads had been run. Now, Adweek has posted them all in chronological order. Some of our favorites include "Network" and "Santa Claus," if only for the wonderfully nostalgic Claymation.

Did you have a favorite? If so, you're sure to find it in Adweek's collection.

  • OWC offers 480 GB SSD for 2010 MacBook Air

If you want to give your 2010 MacBook Air a competitive edge with the largest solid state drive available for your notebook, then check out the Mercury Aura Pro Express line from Other World Computing (OWC). The third-party SSD is available in 180, 240, 360 and 480 GB capacities and fits both the 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch Air models that debuted in late 2010.

Big and fast, OWC claims the Aura Express SSD delivers a maximum transfer rate of 275 MB/s and offers a 68% boost in performance over factory drives.

Performance comes with a cost -- the entry-level 180 GB solid state drive will set you back US$480 while the top of the line 480 GB SSD costs a whopping $1579. This latter price tag surpasses that of some MacBook Air models, which start at $999 for the entry-level 11-inch model and climb up to $1599 for the premium 13-inch model.

  • Apple's Bud Tribble will testify before Senate committee, says Franken

In the ongoing commotion around location, privacy and what your iPhone knows about what you did last summer, the witness list for upcoming Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearings on mobile privacy has been announced. Senator Al Franken's (D-MN) office told The Loop that Apple's VP of software technology, Guy L. "Bud" Tribble, will be there, along with regulators, privacy advocates and Google's VP of public policy.

Franken invited the companies to send representatives to his hearing a couple of weeks ago, as the location issues were making news. Tribble has been on the hot seat before when it comes to Congressional oversight of digital privacy; he appeared at a similar hearing last summer, alongside Facebook's CTO and Google's lead privacy engineer. He's also one of the longest-serving Apple and NeXT veterans, and is credited with identifying the legendary Reality Distortion Field power of Steve Jobs. Perhaps he should borrow the field generator for his testimony.

The hearings will begin on May 10 at 10 am Eastern time. If you're watching on C-SPAN, keep an eye on the senators as Tribble enters the room... the ones that recoil and run away are almost certainly Klingons.

  • Apple now ranks #35 in Fortune 500

Apple climbed its way into the elite Top 50 of the Fortune 500 list for this year. The Cupertino company climbed 21 spots to claim the #35 position between Medco Health solutions and Boeing. Apple was propelled upwards by sales of the iPad, the iPhone and content from the iOS App Store. Combined with its iTunes and Mac hardware sales, the company netted US$14 billion in profits in 2010 and is counted among the 20 most profitable companies in the world.

Apple leads both the tablet and smartphone market and its computer sales are growing. When looking at revenue for the Computer and Office equipment category, Apple settled in second place behind market leader HP and edged out Dell which dropped down to third place. Apple's forecast for 2011 remains strong -- the company continues to expand into new markets with its iOS devices and its Mac hardware line continues to be updated with the latest generation hardware.

  • iPad 2 sells out in 4 hours in Beijing

The iPad 2 made its official debut in China on May 6 and the popular tablet device sold out in just four hours at the flagship Apple store in Beijing. According to M.I.C Gadget, the scene at the Beijing store was reportedly wild with hundreds of customers waiting in line, scalpers on the sidelines looking to buy and sell iPad 2s for cash, security guards circling the crowd and even a German Shepherd on hand to keep the scene under control.

Similar to previous launches, demand for the iPad 2 greatly outstripped supply, a scenario confirmed by Apple during its latest earning conference call. Apple's acting-CEO Tim Cook said the company was facing "the mother of all backlogs" with the iPad 2. Apple is working on increasing production and hopes to reduce iPad 2 wait times in the upcoming quarters.

  • Quality issues with LG manufactured panels to blame for iPad 2 shortage

Quality control problems with LCD panels from LG Display may have contributed to the prolonged shortage of the iPad 2. According to the report from Digitimes, early batches of the 9.7-inch panels supplied by LG had a light leak issue that limited LG's ability to meet demand. As a result, LG only produced 3.2 million panels in the first quarter of 2011, a figure that trails the four million panels produced by Samsung. This report corroborates an earlier report from IHS iSuppli that blamed the iPad 2 shortage on an unknown manufacturing problem with LCDs.

LG has reportedly fixed this light leakage problem and is back on track to ramp up production this spring. Chimei Innolux is also prepping to contribute to the supply of IPS panels for the iPad 2 starting in May. If both these manufacturers can boost production, then perhaps iPad 2 supply constraints can be eased in this current quarter.

  • Cydia Search lets you search for jailbreak apps from your desktop

    Cydia Search

Searching for the perfect Jailbreak app in Cydia on the iPhone can be a frustratingly slow experience. Cydia Search from Planet-iPhones.com eases your pain by allowing you to browse through the plethora of Cydia apps by category, repository or author, all from the comfort of a desktop browser. If you know what you're looking for, you can search by name, description, author, version number or one of the many other search filters, which should make short work of finding what you're looking for.

Once you've located a package you're interested in, you can check out who wrote it, the price, the current version, which repository it's stored on, as well as view the actual Cydia entry as it would appear on an iPhone. While this isn't the first implementation of a desktop Cydia interface -- ModMyi also provides a searchable front end for Cydia on the desktop -- Cydia Search provides a fast, slick experience that's well worth checking out.

It's great for those people sitting on the fence as to whether or not they want to jailbreak their iDevice since it allows them to view all the programs, add-ons, tweaks and themes before they take the plunge. Likewise, if you're looking for a new app or update, Cydia Search will allow you to find what you're looking for before you head to Cydia on your device to download it.

  • Untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 now available from iPhone dev team

Jailbreakers hesitant to update to iOS 4.3.3 can now do so without losing their ability to jailbreak. The iPhone dev team confirmed iOS 4.3.3 is still vulnerable to the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1. Released earlier this week, this version of iOS fixes the location bug that made headlines a few weeks ago.

Both the PwnageTool and redsn0w have been updated and will jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 devices including the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad1 and AppleTV 2G (v4.3;8F202). As we have seen in the past, the iPad 2 is not yet supported and its jailbreak is still under development.

Head over to the dev team's blog for more information about this untethered jailbreak. As with all jailbreak attempts, follow the directions carefully and proceed at your own risk.

  • TUAW's Daily iOS App: Enduro

Enduro is an old Atari game that's now on the App Store, and it's available as a universal version for iPhone or iPad. Personally, I don't really remember this one (it's a racing game that's similar to Pole Position, though the big innovation was that you could race through different environments like fog or snow), but bigger Atari fans than myself might be excited to see that it's now playable on iOS.

The reason why Enduro is interesting, however, is that, as Touch Arcade reports, it's an unsanctioned port. Atari has already released several games for the iPhone, and those are all officially sponsored, presumably giving a little bit of money back to the original creators (or in most cases, whoever owns the rights to them). But for Enduro, developer Nemo has strangely been able to publish the app without the official rights to the software -- it's a completely unofficial port.

At any rate, the game's currently available on the App Store for US$0.99. If you want to play it, you better pick it up fast. Nemo could actually go get the rights to the game to publish it -- that's exactly what the folks behind the Commodore 64 app did, and that app is now official and approved. But there may be some rough waters ahead for this one if the original Enduro IP owners get word of Nemo's app.

  • Photographer creates amazing photo book with iPhone and Camera+

Almost every day, we see people putting the iPhone 4's camera to amazing use, but New York wedding photographer Joshua Brown took it to the next level. Using tap tap tap's US$1.99 Camera+, Joshua created an entire photo book of a recent trip to Italy. The results are eyebrow-raising to say the least; every shot looks like it was taken with a high-end DSLR rather than the iPhone 4's decent but decidedly consumer-level camera.

"I actually went out there to shoot a wedding in Florence, so I had my [Canon] 5D with me, but I really felt like I wanted to just relax and not haul a bunch of gear around all week," says Joshua. "I did actually bring the 5D out a few times, but all the images that made it to the book were from the iPhone."

You can check out some choice shots at tap tap tap's blog, or check out a preview of the entire book here (sorry, iOS users, it's in Flash it should work fine on the iPad or iPhone). Although it's not going to replace my DSLR, after seeing Joshua's shots, I'll likely take my iPhone 4's camera a lot more seriously than I have thus far. As an aside, if you have an iPhone 4 and are even remotely interested in taking above-average pictures with it, Camera+ is a must-have.

  • Admiring the beauty of an iPhone 'Aged to Perfection'

I like this a lot -- a blogger over at the design mind blog is admiring the look of gadgets, like the iPhone, that have been "Aged to Perfection." In other words, gadgets that are well-used and that carry the mark of being carried around. Maybe it's just because I'm an iPhone user that frets over every little mark and scratch my iPhone gets, but I'm surprised by just how good the beaten-up iPhone in the picture above looks. No, it's not as sleek or fresh as the beautiful pictures of new products Apple posts on its website, but it's beautiful in another way. As blogger Remy Labesque says about these gadgets, "their battle scars reveal the stuff they're actually made of."

An iPhone isn't exactly designed to age well -- it's not cheap or flimsy by any means, of course, but Apple's steady release and technology improvement schedule means that most iPhones sold back on day one probably aren't still in use today. Apple doesn't have a lot of reasons to change that, either -- those record profits don't keep rolling unless people keep buying new iPhones.

But I like Labesque's idea of a gadget designed not just to be new and shiny, but to be worn and well-used. Like a pair of old jeans or a solid leather wallet, there's value in having a powerful computer both when you wait in line on release day, and a few years later when it's been put through the paces.

  • Nielsen: iPad maintains 82% of tablet market

No surprises here: the iPad is dominating the tablet market in the US right now, with over 80 percent of users owning a version of Apple's tablet. The latest survey by Nielsen gives that figure, and says that 3G and Wi-Fi versions are almost equally split among owners, with 39% sticking with Wi-Fi, and 43% preferring 3G. "Dominating" is exactly the right word, too -- the Samsung Galaxy is the next tablet on the list, with only a 4% market share, and the Motorola Xoom only showed up with 2%. Sure, the tablet market is still developing quickly, but for now, Apple has it locked down and then some.

Nielsen also polled about how people use their tablets, and over half of users are the only people who use the tablet they own, so it's still a very personal device. 35% of tablet users say they use their desktop computer less, and 32% of tablet and laptop owners say they use the more traditional laptop less. And as for why users are using their tablets, the portability seems to be a big draw, with 31% of respondents listing tablets as "easy to carry/take with you."

  • UK newspaper The Telegraph offers subscriptions through iPad

The UK newspaper The Telegraph has released version 2.0 of its iPad app. The updated app features a 30-day archive, night reading mode and greater depth of content, including video, picture galleries, graphics and cartoon archives. However, the big feature of the updated app is the pricing plans.

Users can now download the paper each day for £1.19 (US$1.99). Admittedly, that is rather pricey, but The Telegraph makes up for its daily rates by offering monthly subscriptions for £9.99 (U$16.99). That's 70% off the daily rate, and considering The Telegraph is published every day, that's quite a bit of information for your buck (or quid). For those keeping track, a monthly subscription to the paper edition is £26.40, so the iPad edition saves you quite a lot. Also, Telegraph readers who currently have a subscription to the paper edition can download the iPad edition for free by entering their subscriber number.

Readers should note that, as with traditional newspaper subscriptions, the monthly subscription to the iPad edition is auto-renewing, so users will need to cancel it or they will be automatically billed when the next month comes up.

The Telegraph for iPad is a free download.

  • The legal implications of mobile health apps and devices

medical appsI'm neither a doctor nor a lawyer, but you don't have to have an MD to realize that medical apps are becoming an ever-more-important tool in managing our healthcare choices, costs and overall wellness. In a similar vein, medical accessories to our iDevices could make home medical care cheaper and easier.

Whether you're monitoring your blood sugar, looking up first aid advice or trying to find an emergency clinic, mobile medical apps are going to be huge; that is, they will be if the legal system doesn't stifle innovation in the space. As for hardware -- where are the devices we were promised?

There's very little case law around the liability of medical apps should something go wrong, ditto hardware and regulatory issues. Remember 2009, when Apple brought Johnson & Johnson's folks on stage for them to announce the LifeScan app for glucose monitoring, and then in 2010 when sanofi-aventis showed off the iBGStar? Both products replicate the functionality of existing glucose meters on the market, yet neither one has made it to the approval stage yet. There could be technical hiccups, there could be problems on the marketing front... or maybe there's a liability angle. We're still waiting on the Withings blood pressure cuff, although the iHealth unit has actually shipped -- a notable exception in the realm of iDevice health attachments.

This article from TechNewsWorld raises the point that liability for a medical app has yet to be determined in the courts. Who takes the blame if your first aid app winds up giving you incorrect advice on CPR -- the carrier, the developer or the distributor? Josh McKoon, a Georgia Senator and lawyer at a firm specializing in healthcare legal issues said "they all could be sued." Of course, you can sue anyone, any time. Luckily apps have disclaimers, and in reality anyone who (at this point) is solely dependent upon a smartphone app for their health is likely going to lose a lawsuit.

As the article points out, there are lots of issues at play here. FDA regulations, murky legal rulings, pending litigation: they all make medical apps a legal minefield should something go wrong and your disclaimer provide less-than-adequate coverage. In other words, it's a mess. Medical apps are cranking out all the time, but medical devices you dock with your iOS device, not so much. We'll have to wait and see how case law shapes this emerging market. Read the article from TechNewsWorld for a comprehensive breakdown of where this market is at now, and consider the future up for grabs.

  • VH1 introduces "co-viewing" app for iPad

I am intrigued by this growing trend of "co-viewing" or "second screen" mobile apps. These are apps designed to be used while you're watching or doing something else, either something like enjoying a live concert or watching a movie or TV show. We've seen a few of these before, but VH1 has released an app called VH1 Co-Star that's designed exactly for this type of experience.

Mashable has a pretty good write-up -- while you watch the show itself, the app feeds you tweets and other information that goes along with what you're watching. There's even a "DVR" feature where you can get information streamed as if it were live from shows that you're not watching live.

The app's free, of course, and you probably don't have any reason to download it unless you're a big VH1 fan. But as I said, this trend of using mobile apps to expand a viewing experience is intriguing -- more and more people are using their mobile devices, especially the iPad, while some other media is playing in the background, and apps like this both increase engagement and provide a deeper experience for the viewer. [They also motivate viewers to watch the event live, rather than DVRing and time-shifting, which means better ratings and more ad impressions for the channels. -Ed.]

I suspect we'll see much more of this in the future -- sports specifically seems like a big field (so to speak) for growth on this one. We have seen sports organizations like MLB and ESPN take advantage of Apple's iOS store, but I think this is a prime area for them to try and implement soon.

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

During the day, I often switch between the screen on my 13" Unibody MacBook and an external monitor. Of course, this wreaks havoc upon all my poor windows with resizing, moving and so forth.

I have to drag them back to their places, and scold them for their impertinence. How dare they move?!

Is there a window manager app that will remember where I like my windows, and move them back where they belong in each of these display sizes?

    Thanks a ton,

    Your favorite nephew,

  • Android Market could surpass App Store in size this year, research suggests

According to German research group research2guidance, The Android Marketplace could surpass Apple's App Store in size this year. As TechCrunch points out, another analytics company, Distimo, paints a similar picture. The research groups assume that the current growth rates of both markets remain the same. If so, the crossover date will happen sometime this August when both app stores hit 425,000 available apps.

However, the store with the most apps doesn't necessarily translate into the store with the most downloads. A few days ago, iSuppli issued a report stating that Apple will snag 76 percent of the app download market in 2011, and even by 2014, Apple will command 60 percent of the market with Google a moderate second. For anyone who remembers the shareware scene (Mac vs. Windows) in the 90s, it also doesn't mean that "more" means "better."

In the early years of app stores, the number of apps the store had was seen as the most important factor, as it enticed consumers to by hardware for which there were a large number of apps. However, as app stores mature, it's likely that the paradigm will shift, and quality will be seen as the guiding drive behind app store-supported devices. Indeed, Apple already seems to be moving in that direction, removing "sexy apps," eliminating potentially fake reviews and ratings garnered from app promo codes and banning pay-per-install apps. That's not to say quantity isn't important, but once a store has a few hundred thousand apps, the quality of those apps really becomes the deciding factor in what makes one app store superior to the other.

  • EA iOS revenues up 100%, Firemint mentioned

EA held a conference call yesterday to talk about the past year's revenues, and it's no surprise that the mobile division is doing great. The mobile revenue total was $70 million for the last quarter, up 27 percent from the same period last year. It doesn't sound like things were quite as busy as the holiday season that set records recently, but iOS and its mobile counterparts are definitely a moneymaker for the big traditional gaming company. iOS specifically, says EA, is up "over 100 percent" in revenues from the previous year. And that even compares favorably to the more traditional handheld consoles -- the DS brought in $28 million, and PSP picked up $16 million, both sizable numbers, but lower than the mobile total for sure.

The recent Firemint acquisition was also mentioned during the call, but only tangentially. Eric Brown didn't mention the actual purchase price, but he did say that "overall on price, it's less than $25 million." He also called the deal "a great pick up, and we're super excited to have that talented team join EA." EA is definitely building quite the mobile powerhouse.

  • Apple closing in on Nokia as world's top smartphone vendor

Research firm IDC has published the results from its most recent survey on smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2011. There are lots of interesting insights from the data, but most interesting of all is that Apple appears to be in the last leg of its runup to overtake Nokia as the world's top smartphone vendor.

Currently, Nokia sits in first place, controlling 24.3% of the smartphone market with 24.2 million phones sold. Apple occupies the second spot, holding 18.7% of the market with 18.7 million iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2011. That's a difference of only 5.5 million units, and it's bad news for Nokia as Apple's Q1 2011 iPhone sales grew 114% year over year, while Nokia's smartphone sales only grew 12% in the same period. (The growth champion is Samsung, which shot up 350% year over year but started with the lowest Q1 market share).

Overall, the smartphone market grew almost 80% last quarter, with second place Apple and fourth and fifth place Samsung and HTC, respectively, leading most of the growth. From the numbers, it can be inferred that unless your smartphone is running iOS or Android, your potential growth faces severe limitations. As mentioned, first place vendor Nokia only grew 12% in units shipped, and third place vendor RIM grew 31%.

  • New York Times website harvests iPhone location data

The New York Times Company Research and Development Lab has developed its own tool to take advantage of location-tracking data that caused a kerfuffle when it was discovered that Apple was collecting said data. Although the issue has been resolved, the newspaper points out that regular people can benefit from the information as well as Apple.

OpenPaths is a database where anonymous users can contribute their personal location data by uploading it from their phones. The data is password-protected, and contributors can only reveal who they are when they grant access to research requests. Participants can browse their own data after it's uploaded.

If you're interested in joining the project, head over to the OpenPaths site to sign up. The site warns that the OS 4.3.3 update can disable access to the data that the site is looking for.

  • HMH Fuse and the future of K-12 mobile education on the iPad

Last September we wrote about a fascinating project that, if successful, may ring in the future of digital curricula for K-12 education. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a major publisher of textbooks with an abiding interest in technology, embarked upon a large scale pilot project in digital education.

As soon as their new Holt McDougal Algebra 1 textbook was finished, it was decided to re-imagine it as an iPad app named HMH Fuse Algebra 1. The app would include exactly the same content as the 950-page book, but it would also contain over 400 videos, animations, a graphing calculator, multiple presentation methods and numerous other features. John Sipe, the general sales manager of HMH, blueprinted what he wanted the app to be and worked with developers to bring it to fruition.

The free app, which weighs in at 141 MB, only gives you a taste of how it all works, but it doesn't include any course content. Seeing that requires a US$59.95 in-app purchase. Loading all the content takes up a whopping 4-6 GB of space, but chapters and videos can be downloaded, erased and reloaded at any time.
