  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Will Lion ship on disc?

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

I keep reading about how Lion is most likely to be distributed through the Mac App Store. I think this is great, and a huge convenience. I see how this would work for upgrading, but what happens if you have to wipe your computer and reinstall it? If you have no disk, how can you boot from it?

It would be a rather large pain to boot from Snow Leopard and then reinstall Lion after logging into the Mac App Store and re-downloading Lion again.

I was wondering what your thoughts were.

    Love,

    Your Nephew Andrew Q

  • Fantastical vs. Today: Mac calendar app faceoff

Earlier this week I reviewed Flexibit's new Fantastical app and Today from Second Gear Software. Both offer attractive and useful front-end access to iCal. Today I'll compare the two head-to-head and pick a favorite.

Why these two apps? First, Fantastical is the fresh newcomer, garnering much well-deserved attention since its release a few days ago. Today offers similar functionality and has been around since 2008. They perform similar tasks but differently, and in subtle ways cater to different audiences.

Before we get started, catch up with the Fantastical review and the Today review. All set? Then let's begin.

  • Google updates Maps for mobile browsers

Google has updated Google Maps for iOS and Android mobile browsers, adding features that those who use Google Maps for iOS or on a desktop have had for awhile.

These features include the ability to view your current location, suggestible search and auto completion; clickable icons; directions for driving, walking, biking and transit; different map layers to toggle satellite, traffic and more.

I'm honestly surprised these features weren't in the web app before. To give it a try, head to maps.google.com via a mobile browser.

  • Hype 1.0 allows you to create slick, animated websites in HTML5

If you've wanted to create a simple but attractive site with some animation but didn't want to go through the hassle of using Flash (not to mention the cost), check out Hype on the Mac App Store. Hype uses a simple timeline metaphor to allow you to place images, text, shapes and more into pages and animate them. Hype uses a Scene metaphor to arrange your pages, much as you would arrange slides in Keynote. Add in your graphics, video and text and a simple animated site can be yours in a few clicks.

Hype also provides a JavaScript API so you can plug in your animations to a larger site, one perhaps beyond the capacity of Hype to adequately manage it. This isn't an application for creating a large e-commerce site. Hype is more tuned to simple, informative sites.

While you can make animated sites quickly with Hype, the real beauty is the fact that you don't need plugins to deploy your pages. Freed from Flash, Hype exports lightweight HTML5 what will work nicely across iOS devices and Macs without crushing your CPU or draining your battery. My MacBook Air is so relieved!

Hype is available on the Mac App Store for a limited-time price of $29.99.

You can also take a look at the free beta of Sencha Animator, a similar tool that Brett checked out late last year that's aimed more at the online advertising market.

  • TUAW's Daily Mac App: SketchMee

    SketchMee for Mac

There are lots of auto-sketching applications available for iOS -- you can see their results littering Twitter every now and again. The Mac, however, has a lot more horsepower to play with, and SketchMee really takes advantage of it.

SketchMee sketches you, or anything else you like, from a photo. Whether it's in chalk, pencil or a combo of the two, SketchMee will render any image in a pretty great approximation of a sketch. Almost all the sketch parameters can be altered to taste or desired effect. Options include paper size, color, material, margin, opacity, stroke width, intensity, color and detail.

For someone like me, who has the artistic ability of a gnat, having something that can instantly sketch an image is wonderful. I'd like to see an option for skill, so that I could at least attempt to match one of the sketches with my fair hand, but then again, it'd have to be kindergarten level for that.

Whether it's indulging your long-lost love of landscapes, or creating a quick sketch of the girl next door, the US$7.99 SketchMee will do you proud. Just don't try and pass it off as your own work.

  • Study wrongly suggests iPad readers skim, show poor retention

    newspaper

Miratech conducted a study that compared the way people read on a newspaper with the way they read on the iPad. The research used reading time, gaze patterns and eye movement to discern any difference between the two mediums. The study concluded that people concentrate more on the content and remember an article better when they read the newspaper.

This result is tantalizing and may seem to bolster the opinion the iPad is a toy, while the newspaper is where people turn for their real news. Before you toss the iPad in the trash, this survey has two major flaws. First, the authors don't tell us how many people participated in the survey. It could be 50 or 5,000. This number is important as the smaller the sample size, the larger the margin of error.

Also, the authors admit they had participants read similar information from a newspaper first and then from its iPad version. No wonder people only skimmed an article on an iPad, they just read it in the newspaper! I wonder if the results would have been different if the researchers reversed this order and handed people an iPad first and a newspaper second.

  • Apple's Daily Downloads retail iPad app and Apple Store rumors

There's a lot of action going on at the Apple Store these days. The iconic retail chain is celebrating ten years of success, employees are grumbling about forming an Apple retail employee's union, and now 9 to 5 Mac is displaying screenshots of a new iPad app especially for store employees.

Apple has rolled out iPads that are loaded with a number of in-house apps: RetailMe, Apple Connect, Apple Directory, Concierge, Mobile Genius, and iRepair. In addition, the EasyPay app that has usually been installed on card reader-equipped iPod touch hardware is loaded on the iPads. I'm speculating that Apple might be using the Square card reader, rather than rolling out an iPad case with a card reader.

The spotlight, though, is on Apple's Daily Downloads app. The app (seen above in a screenshot from 9 to 5 Mac) is an internal daily "newspaper" of sorts for employees, with all the info that the retail folks need to keep up with all things Apple -- although we'd prefer that they read TUAW instead.

We're hearing some interesting rumors from our sources -- team leaders are in another full day training session today, an "overnight visual update" for the stores is set for Saturday night, and there will be an all-hands meeting at 7 AM Sunday morning. Stores have also purged existing multimedia content from their servers, and huge downloads are scheduled for the weekend, presumably with new content.

How many of you will be heading to an Apple Store this weekend to check out what's new? Let us know in the comments.

  • Apple transfers Thunderbolt trademark to Intel

Intel is credited as being the brains behind the new Thunderbolt I/O technology, but Apple is the one who holds the original trademark for the name. According to recent reports, this may change as Apple is reportedly transferring ownership of this trademark to Intel.

Intel originally created the I/O technology using optical cabling and marketed it under the name Light Peak. Apple approached Intel about Light Peak and the two companies began collaborating on the project. Over the course of a few years, Apple pushed Intel to drop the optical connection and replace it with copper which permits the transmission of electricity as well as data. They also changed the name.

The technology was unveiled earlier this year and made its market debut in Apple's current line of MacBook Pro notebooks and iMac all-in-one computers. Apple may be an early adopter and has unrestricted usage of Thunderbolt but this technology is open to any third-party company that wants to license it and use this I/O port in its devices.

  • Foxconn Chengdu plant fire, possible explosion

    foxconnfire.jpg

Via MacRumors and MICgadget, there are reports coming in of a substantial fire and possible explosion at a Foxconn plant that is said to be dedicated primarily to iPad 2 production.

MICgadget has several video clips of the scene, including smoke billowing from a building, people evacuating and reports of multiple fire engines responding to the emergency. There are reports of some injuries and speculation that the fire/explosion was caused by airborne dust.

Our thoughts are with the victims of this emergency and we hope that all the remaining employees are able to evacuate the plant safely.

  • Steve Jobs in video tour of the first Apple Store

If you're looking for a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Apple Store, look no further than this YouTube video. In it, a much younger-looking Steve Jobs gives a video tour of the first store in Tyson's Corner, VA six days before the grand opening. The video was presented to an enthusiastic crowd, apparently at WWDC 2001 (since Jobs makes reference to "we'll provide shelves for as much as you can write", and Macworld NY didn't happen until July) which was held at about the same time.

It's amazing to see how the Apple Store concept has evolved in those ten years. In the video, Steve shows off the huge black shelves that used to dominate the center of the store, covered with rows of boxes of Mac applications. Those, of course, have disappeared with the advent of the App Stores. Jobs also notes that they'll be selling third-party hardware, including digital video and still cameras, MP3 players (the camera lingers for a moment on a Creative Labs Nomad), and PDAs.

Now, of course, the MP3 player market has been dominated for nearly ten years by the iPod, and PDAs are just a distant memory that has been outshadowed by the iPhone. Click the read more link to watch the video, and enjoy a trip down memory lane.

  • Verizon Wireless may end unlimited data plans this summer

    verizon wireless

The Verizon iPhone launched with a unlimited data plan, but that all-you-can-eat option may be disappearing this summer. During the Reuters Global Summit, Verizon chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo hinted that the carrier's unlimited data plans would be replaced by a mega-data plan.

These new data plans would offer data in the same way a family share plan handles voice minutes. A subscriber would buy a tiered data plan whose GB allotment could be shared by multiple devices. Shammo did not mention pricing or even when these mega-plans would roll out. He said these plans were "a logical progression" for the carrier. Such a plan would make sense for someone with a Verizon iPhone and a 3G iPad, as long as the pricing is kept in check.

No worries if you are already on an unlimited data plan, you will be able to keep your plan as long as you keep your iPhone. If you switch to another phone or buy a new phone, then you will have to upgrade to these new plans.

  • Sony joins EMI and Warner in Apple cloud music service

Three down, one to go. Just a day after CNET suggested that EMI joined Warner Music Group in allowing Apple to distribute their music over a cloud-based service, now Bloomberg is claiming that Apple has also officially inked a deal with Sony Music. That leaves just one of the big four music labels -- Universal Music Group -- left to sign on with Apple. And as Bloomberg states, Universal is supposedly close to signing with the iPod maker soon.

As I mentioned yesterday, getting all four major music labels to sign on to a cloud-based service is seen as a serious win and another vote of confidence for Apple's rumored streaming media services. Both Google and Amazon launched their online music services without any major music label support. Apple's cloud music service, expected to be dubbed iCloud, may be unveiled at WWDC on June 6.

  • TUAW's Daily iOS App: Chromanoids

Chromanoids is Hothead Games' second title for the App Store. The first was Bunny the Zombie Slayer, and it's done pretty well (even though most of the studio's previous work was for PC). This one's a more retro affair -- it's basically Missile Command, though obviously with the touchscreen rather than the traditional wheel. But the twist here is that the action is color based -- you need to not only line up shots against invading ships, but you need to match shot colors with ship colors, which means red ammo takes down red ships, and so on.

Things do get more complex as the game moves on, with ships that use colored shields and even ships that change color as they fly, but despite those changes, this still isn't much more than Missile Command -- you're still just lining up shots with ships and hoping to hit home before they hit you. That said, Missile Command is plenty of fun, and if you like that game, you'll like this one as well.

Chromanoids is US$0.99 for a universal version, and there are in-app payments for credits, which allow you to buy things like power-ups (though they aren't really needed to enjoy the game). Game Center integration is a nice bonus, and there are a few different modes to check out as well. For the price, this is a great sophomore title from Hothead Games, though I'm a little surprised it's coming so soon after the first one. We'll have to see what else the studio has in store.

  • Apple vaults into top 5 PC maker spot in UK, Western Europe

Earlier this week, Gartner issued a press release about the Western European PC market. For most PC manufacturers, things aren't looking good. For the first quarter of 2011, PC sales in the region were down 18 percent year over year. However, as usual, Apple has bucked the trend. For the same period, Apple's Western European PC sales were up 10-15 percent in the same markets. That growth helped the Mac maker spring into the top five PC vendor list in both the UK and Western Europe.

"Apple made its debut among the top five vendors in Western Europe, displacing Toshiba in the first quarter of 2011. Apple was the only one among the top five vendors to increase shipments, with volumes for mobile PCs growing 32 percent in the first quarter of 2011," Gartner said.

The top five PC makers for Western Europe are now HP, Acer, Dell, Asus and Apple; in the UK, the top five are HP, Acer, Dell, Toshiba and Apple.

  • Report: Not much has changed in the growing smartphone market

It's that time of the month again -- another report is out from Millenial Media about advertising on the smartphone platforms, with more conclusions about what the market's been up to lately. This month, the big news is... that there's not a lot of big news at all. Apple continues to sit on top of the manufacturers list, Android tops the list of operating systems, and the smartphone market continues to grow, increasing its impressions shares 6 percent month-over-month in the mobile device market as a whole. In fact, for the first time in the history of the report, the top 20 list of devices doesn't list any feature phones at all; it's all smartphones, all the way down.

Apple's own share continues to grow. Overall iOS impressions on Millenial's network have increased 47 percent since January, probably due to the release of the white iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. Across all of the advertising revenue collected, iOS accounted for 50 percent, a 6 percent growth month-over-month. This means that even though there are more Android users out there, iOS continues to be more profitable.

In general, this hasn't been a very surprising month in the smartphone advertising market. But all of the trends we've seen lately continue to develop in their various directions -- Android keeps getting more users, but Apple's still the one making most of the profits.

  • Amazon adds electronics, including iOS devices, to trade-in program

Amazon has added a host of electronic devices -- including iOS devices -- to its trade-in program. The Electronics Trade-In program is currently in beta and allows users to mail in their old, unwanted devices in exchange for Amazon gift card credits. Devices must be in working order and good cosmetic condition. A third-party merchant, not Amazon, is actually the one buying the used devices.

The prices are actually more generous than I thought they'd be. I sold an original 4 GB iPhone on Craigslist a while back and had trouble getting US$75 for it. Amazon's trade-in program currently offers up to $69 for the same iPhone. A sampling of other iOS device trade-in prices includes up to $114 for iPod classics, $235 for first-gen 16 GB Wi-Fi iPads and $162 for an 8 GB iPhone 3GS. That's definitely way more than you'll get if you let your old iPhone rattle around in a desk drawer after upgrading to a new one.

  • Lawsuit says AT&T overcharging users for iPhone, iPad data

A new class action lawsuit claims that AT&T "systematically overstated data usage by 7-14 percent and sometimes up to 300 percent" on users' iPhone and iPad data plans, according to MSNBC. The lawyers for the suit have said that they have spent over US$80,000 testing iPhones on AT&T's network to prove AT&T's overstating data usage.

As part of the testing, the lawyers turned off every feature on the iPhone that could use 3G data. Even after shutting off all 3G data connections, there were still 35 transactions for data usage on the lawyers' AT&T bill. The lawyers say that while the cost to some affected users is relatively small -- $10-15 a month -- AT&T is illegally reaping huge profits from overstating data usage on the bills of millions of iPhone users.

AT&T has responded to the claims, calling them "without merit." The company says that the lawsuit doesn't take into account "automatic app updates in the background that customers may not be aware of." However, unless they are talking about push notifications, apps don't automatically update. Plus, if 3G is turned off as it was in the lawyers' tests, there is no reason any "automatic app updates" should incur data usage fees.

  • Patent shows Aperture on iPad

An Apple patent filed back in 2009 shows the Aperture app running on a larger touchscreen -- something akin to the iPad, though, of course, it didn't officially exist back then. The image is actually part of a larger patent that goes through the whole process of how user interface elements work on touchscreen displays, but as you can see above, Aperture is clearly the app being shown.

Apple hasn't released that app for iPad yet, though it has released a few iWork apps and even a pretty comprehensive version of iMovie on the iOS platform. The iPad didn't even have a camera at launch, but now that there is a camera in the iPad 2, it's possible Apple could be putting together a high-end photo editor for the iPad's touchscreen.

Since this is a patent that's already a few years old, this only means Apple at least considered such an app at some time in the past. But it's not a huge stretch to think we'll see more complicated iOS photo software from Apple in the future.

  • Apple TV prototype sold on eBay

A prototype of the original Apple TV, or "iTV" as it was known when Jobs first unveiled it in 2006, has been sold on eBay for a Buy It Now price of US$350. As you can see from the image above, the prototype unit has an Apple Development Team barcode and a sticker that marks the unit as a "DVT" prototype. Another difference between the prototype unit and the final shipping unit is the logo on the top of the device. The iTV only had the Apple logo on top, while the final Apple TV had the Apple logo plus the letters "TV" marked on its top.

The listing first gained traction earlier today when MacRumors posted about it. As could be expected, the prototype sold fast. The $350 asking price is relatively low for an Apple prototype, and there's a big collectible market for such devices. Apple is usually quick to put a stop to eBay auctions that sell Apple prototypes, as it did with this iPhone prototype, but sometimes sales are completed before the company can end them. Other prototype/odd Apple items that have appeared on eBay include a prototype MacBook Air, a prototype Macintosh Portable computer and... a glass stair.

  • Is it possible? AT&T drops lower in customer satisfaction survey

It's a bit of a surprise. AT&T has dropped below Sprint in consumer ratings, at least according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, as reported by the Associated Press. Both T-Mobile and AT&T are ranked at the bottom, which makes you wonder about the wisdom of the announced sale of T-Mobile to AT&T. Think of the fun customers will have as the two worst companies on the list merge accounting systems and networks. Consumer Reports also ranks AT&T the worst of the cellular carriers.

Sprint and Verizon both get a score of 72 in the survey, which was done by polling 8,000 households in the first quarter of the year. AT&T is at the bottom with a score of 66, down 3 points from last year. T-Mobile scores a 70, also down 3 from a year ago.

At first glance I would have thought there would be some improvement in the AT&T score. We've been reporting on problems for years, and AT&T says it has spent millions in upgrades and says it has been trying to fill in the coverage gaps. What's your experience? Is AT&T getting better or worse, and if you made the jump to Verizon, are you happier?

  • Foodish takes the calorie counting out of meal tracking

We've looked at various food journals for iOS in the past, and Foodish is the latest entry into this market. It's a food diary that focuses more on providing you a visual record of what you've eaten rather than counting calories.

It's pretty easy to use and has an attractive UI. Launch the app, tap the add button and take a picture of your food or drink. You can group these into meals or snacks, and select whether or not you think you've made a good food choice by tapping a facial expression. You can share the pictures of your meal via Facebook or Twitter.

It's a good, basic program to use if you want to keep a food diary but don't care to count calories. Personally, I gravitate toward more feature-laden programs, such as Lose It (free), and I've also been using the Weight Watchers Mobile app (free download, requires subscription for food tracking) for keeping my food record since December.

Now, off to the questions! Than queries:

I am starting to use my iPad to score my son's baseball games, doing the scoring from the dugout/field. Any suggestions on a good case? Would really like something waterproof or pretty air tight. Some of the fields can be pretty dusty in the summer and I don't want the dust getting into the iPad and I don't want to have to worry about some rain drops.

  • Gilt Taste looking to introduce cooking app with "motion-activated recipes"

Our friends over at TechCrunch got the scoop on Gilt Taste, a high-end online grocery retailer that doubles as an online magazine. What's intriguing, however, is an iPad app that it's currently developing.

The folks behind Gilt Taste are working to perfect "motion-activated recipes" using the iPad 2's camera. Instead of touching an iPad while you're cooking, you would just make a hand gesture in front of the screen to go through the recipe. Those who use Microsoft's Kinect are familiar with the technology.

This sort of technology makes perfect sense, and it's the sort of app that I think the iPad 2 is made for. As someone who used to get flour and fingerprints on my iPad while cooking, it would be nice to have an app such as this.

  • Xfinity TV on your iPod, iPhone but Wi-Fi only

XFINITY TV screenshot from App StoreVersion 1.5 of Comcast's Xfinity TV app for iPhone and iPod touch arrived on the App Store yesterday. The updated software allows Comcast customers to watch movies and TV shows on their iPhones or iPod touches while connected to any Wi-Fi network.

Comcast added on-demand video streaming functionality to the Xfinity TV app for iPad in February. Since then, Comcast's library of streaming content has grown to include over 6,000 hours of video from 25 networks. The app, which also allows customers to remote control their DVRs and schedule recordings, has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times since it launched in November last year.

The newly updated Xfinity app for iPhone and iPod touch expands the cable provider's goal to bring entertainment to practically any gadget with a screen -- televisions, personal computers, tablets and mobile devices.

The launch of the highly-requested video streaming feature for Apple's mobile devices didn't come without a couple of glitches. Some users reported trouble launching the app after downloading the update. Comcast recommends customers delete any existing copies of Xfinity TV before installing version 1.5. And CNET's Christopher MacManus reported some difficulties playing videos for more than 15 seconds, but attributed the issue to the massive number of people poking around the new on-demand streaming features at the same time. Lastly, like its iPad counterpart, on-demand video is only available through a Wi-Fi connection -- 3G streaming or downloading for later offline viewing is not available with this release.

On the bright side, unlike competitors Cablevision and Time Warner, Comcast allows its customers to stream videos on any Wi-Fi network, not just the one you have at home. So, whether you're curled up in bed or sipping a coffee at your neighborhood Starbucks, you can still catch up on the latest comedy stylings of Conan O'Brien or squeeze in an episode of Seinfeld using your iPhone (3G, 3GS or 4) or iPod touch (2nd, 3rd or 4th generation) running iOS 4.

  • Group looking to form Apple Retail Workers Union

Today, we received an email from an organization calling itself the Apple Retail Workers Union. The organization is trying to garner enough support among Apple retail employees to unionize. From the email:

On May 19, 2001, Apple opened the doors to its first retail stores. It encouraged people to "shop different."

Ten years later, the people of Apple are coming together to "work different."

We are launching today to get fellow employees, shoppers, and the world know that we work in one of the most demanding retail environments while suffering through unfair treatment and compensation among many other various issues.

We deserve better. Our time has come.

This campaign is by and for the workers of Apple's retail stores in the United States.

A spokesperson for the ARWU told Macworld that employees from "some stores in the Pacific Northwest may be talking amongst themselves" about forming a union, and that "an attempt at [the] Alderwood store... is the closest anyone has come to collective action" at Apple's retail stores. The spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, works at an Apple store "in the Bay area" and said the "unfair treatment" it cited in its email "included break schedules, training opportunities, the selection and hiring process for internal candidates for open positions, and wages," according to Macworld.

With all the demonizing of unions going on right now, it's probably not the best time for the fledgling ARWU to attempt this, but hey, at least they're giving it a go in the Pacific Northwest first and not in more hostile places, such as Wisconsin.

  • Verizon CFO: Next iPhone works on both CDMA and GSM networks

As part of the Reuters Global Technology Summit, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo today talked about data plan discounts, prepaid plans and the next-generation iPhone. During his talk, Shammo noted that the next iPhone model will be released simultaneously for both AT&T and Verizon.

This is an indication that the next iPhone supports CDMA and GSM networks, possibly using the same Qualcomm-produced dual-mode chipset that is in the current Verizon CDMA iPhone 4. While the GSM bands aren't enabled in the current Verizon iPhone 4, bringing that capability to the next generation device would give the company a chance to sell a true "world phone" that can work in as many countries as the GSM-based iPhone.

Shammo also noted that although he is "happy" with sales of the Verizon iPhone, some customers held off on purchasing as they were waiting for a 4G device running on Verizon's LTE network. The CFO isn't concerned about the next iPhone not supporting LTE, stating that Verizon has enough high-speed alternatives to keep customers happy. Referring to the lack of LTE, Shammo was quoted as saying "I think it's a bigger issue for Apple than it is for us."

  • TUAW's Daily Mac App: DeepFocus

    DeepFocus

When you're in a noisy environment, such as a café or study room, or even when there's just the odd sound to distract you in a room of silence, concentrating can be difficult. You could play some music, but often music can be just as distracting as the background noise, especially when you're trying to put words down on a page. DeepFocus, a US$1.99 app available from the Mac App Store, aims to solve the problem without music, allowing you to concentrate without aural distractions.

It does this by creating a wall of sound, generating random sound patterns defined by a set soundscape or theme, overlaid on white noise. The white noise helps to block out background sounds, while the soundscape gives you just enough (but not too much) to focus on, allowing you to concentrate.

The app comes packing eight different soundscapes for you to choose from, with themes like the seaside to the urban landscape. You first select a soundscape from the menu bar and click 'Enter DeepFocus!' Headphones are, of course, a must, and a good set of sound isolators or noise-cancelling headphones will definitely enhance the experience. The white noise works to some extent, but you will still be able to hear a modicum of what's happening around you.

Both the white noise background volume and the 'auralscape' volume can be independently controlled to taste, while an option for a 'Low level noise mask' is also present. A timer is included in the menu bar, showing you how long you've been in 'DeepFocus,' but thankfully, it can be turned off.

If you have trouble concentrating in a noisy environment, or even in a relatively quiet one, DeepFocus could be the answer if, like me, you can't get by with music alone.

  • Apple's cloud music service could address buffering with local files

A patent has emerged that shows how Apple could address the buffering lag time that is a frequent bane to streaming media users. In the patent, Apple describes storing just small segments of media files locally on a user's device. These segments would be the beginning of a song, for example, and would begin to play immediately while the device buffers the rest of the song from the cloud servers. Using this method, there would be no lag time between when a user taps on a song to play it on his iPhone and when the song actually begins to play.

Current cloud services often feature a noticeable lag time between when a user selects a song and when it begins to play, since the entire file is stored remotely. This patent is important given the rumor that Apple is soon to launch a cloud-based digital music service. If Apple implements this local file snippet feature into its service, it would be a significant advantage to the usability and quality of its service over rivals like Amazon and Google.

  • Yahoo! Messenger lets iPad 2 owners video chat with PCs

    Yahoo!

Yahoo! rolled out a new Messenger app for iOS that includes support for the iPad 2. The tablet-optimized app will let you make voice and video calls using the front-facing camera. Yahoo! Messenger has a wide install base, and you will be able to make video calls to any device with a camera and a compatible version of the messaging app. Besides video calling, Yahoo! Messenger will also send SMS messages for free. The SMS feature is a quick way to message to a friend, but you have to remember these messages come from your Yahoo! account, not your mobile phone number.

  • MacDefender malware protection and removal guide

    macdefender splash screen

    Screenshot thanks to @jaythenerd

The MacDefender malware has been causing trouble for Mac users all over the world; people are calling Apple Support in a panic, spending time visiting their local Apple Store Genius, and getting all stressed out about it. What's worse: the malware is mostly harmless. It's a scam trying to rip off your credit card number, not hurt your Mac.

The attack, which displays a message stating that your machine has been infected with viruses that only a "MacDefender" app can remove, has been spreading rapidly. MacDefender doesn't infect Macs with a virus, nor does it run a keylogger as a background process on your machine. It's simply trying to scare users into providing credit card information by registering an unneeded piece of software. MacSecurity and MacProtector are the same scam software, differing in name only.

It's been reported by ZDNet's Ed Bott that Apple is telling support reps not to assist with removing this malware. You're on your own, but TUAW is here to help you. Read more to find out how to protect yourself from MacDefender, what a MacDefender attack looks like, and how to remove the app if it is installed on your Mac.
