  • MacBook Pro updates may hit March 1

Danish blogger Kenneth Lund is reporting that he's heard from a large Danish Apple reseller that new MacBook Pros will arrive on March 1. Excluding a processor bump build-to-order option last October, the MacBook Pro line has not been updated since April 13, 2010.

The March 1st date is plausible considering that Intel is reportedly set to ship its new Sandy Bridge processors on February 20th and it has been previously reported that new MacBook Pros will drop in March. Also, March 1 falls on a Tuesday, which is traditionally the weekday Apple chooses to announce new computer models.

Beyond the reasonable likelihood that the next MacBook Pros will use Intel's Sandy Bridge processors, there aren't any rumors floating around as to the specs of the next MacBook Pro line. Some speculate that the next version of the MacBook Pro might see a redesign, taking cues from the MacBook air, including solid-state blade storage and elimination of the optical drive.

  • Wall Street Journal backs up 'iPhone nano' rumor

We may be in for quite the shakeup of the iOS world if Ethan Smith's new article in the Wall Street Journal has any weight to it. Smith makes some pretty bold claims about a new, less-expensive iPhone which he states has an edge-to-edge screen and weighs quite a bit less than the current iPhone 4.

This lines up pretty well with a lot of the 'iPhone Nano' rumors we've been seeing for years, and it's certainly intriguing to see the Wall Street Journal putting its stamp on the story.

Presumably, this smaller iPhone would behave more like a data "access point" than a place to store all of your music, movies, and books. Those, says Smith, could be managed by Apple's MobileMe service (which would be turning into a free cloud computing service alongside the launch of the new phone), therefore eliminating the need for large amounts of storage space on the actual device. How well this would work is a topic still up for debate, but you know how it goes: Apple always finds a way.

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what Jobs (or Cook) has up his sleeve in the coming months. The WSJ article hints at a summer release for both the micro phone and the revamped MobileMe service.

  • iPad receives FAA certification as an electronic flight bag

Jeppesen, the company that produces most of the paper and electronic "Jepp charts" used by pilots for preflight planning and inflight navigation, announced late last week that jet charter operator Executive Jet Management has received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to use the Jeppesen Mobile TC App for iPad as an alternative to paper charts.

According to online aviation website AvStop, this authorization allows Executive Jet Management to use the app and iPad as the sole reference for electronic charts at all times during a flight. Jeppesen, Executive Jet Management, and local and national Electronic Flight Bag authorization authorities recently completed a three-month inflight evaluation of the iPad-based solution. During the evaluation, pilots for the charter operator logged more than 250 flight segments using the app.

The configuration that was authorized by the FAA is a Class 1 portable kneeboard electronic flight bag solution, meaning that the iPad needs to be secured and viewable during critical flight phases. The iPad tests even included a rapid decompression test to 51,000 feet in altitude and successful non-interference testing on the evaluation aircraft.

While the authorization is only for one jet charter operator, this could signal a move for rapid acceptance of the iPad in the cockpit by airlines.

  • Dear Aunt TUAW: Is Ireland's 3 carrier blocking Cydia?

    Dear Aunt TUAW,

It looks like 3 Ireland, the one of the Irish iPhone carriers, has blocked Cydia's servers from their network. I'm experiencing errors refreshing data from apt.saurik.com and can't get Cydia to work at all.

Can you suggest a work-around for those of on 3? Help a jailbroken Irish iPhone user out!

    Love,

    Your Irish Nephew Stevie-boy

    Dear Stevie-boy,

Auntie is happy to report that the Irish Cydia Blackout of 2010 was, in fact, a mistake. 3 Spokesperson Chris Jones told TUAW that Cydia was blocked in error.

Jones stated that 3 uses 3rd party company Bluecoat to filter their Internet connection for adult content and other objectionable material. "Cydia has been caught in this filter in error," he told TUAW, "and we are working to resolve this." The Irish Times tech team got the same explanation.

Auntie doesn't have a specific time as to when 3 will resolve the issue, but is happy to report that 3 is working on the problem.

    Love & kissies,

    Auntie T.

  • Verizon iPhone gets five hardware tweaks

Although the Verizon iPhone is largely the same as the iPhone 4 Apple released last year, PC Mag has pointed out five tweaks Apple's made to the design of the new version of the iPhone 4. A few of these hardware changes were necessary in order for the iPhone to connect to Verizon's CDMA network, while others are either cost-cutting measures or subtle improvements to the design.

The most obvious change is the outer antenna. The original iPhone 4 had three break points in the antenna, while the Verizon version has four. While the redesign may have been necessary to get the iPhone 4 working on a CDMA network, according to PC Mag, analysis from iSuppli indicates this could be a dual-antenna design intended to improve the Verizon iPhone's reception. However, according to what we've heard so far, this does not mean the Verizon iPhone 4 is immune from the "death grip" attenuation problem that affected some of the GSM-type iPhone 4s. This new antenna design also meant the volume and mute buttons got moved downward slightly, so case manufacturers (including Apple) will have to update their designs for the Verizon iPhone.

Earlier this week, we learned from iFixit that the iPhone has a dual-mode CDMA/GSM chipset. With a SIM slot and a GSM antenna, this could have allowed the iPhone to act as a true "world phone," but without that essential hardware, the Verizon iPhone won't connect to a GSM network. It's possible that the iPhone 5 will use this same chipset and all the requisite hardware, meaning Apple might only need to produce one version of the iPhone 5 rather than two.

According to iSuppli, and supported by iFixit's teardown, the Verizon iPhone lacks a standalone GPS chip. Instead, it relies on the same Qualcomm MDM6600 chip that handles connecting to GSM/CDMA networks. Rumors abounded last week that subtle hardware differences like these would require navigation app developers to make custom apps for the Verizon iPhone, but that turned out to be untrue.

In its teardown, iFixit also discovered the Verizon iPhone's vibration motor has been entirely redesigned. According to iFixit, the new motor has a "quieter, softer feel, and makes a better sound when on a table." Finally, iFixit noted that although the Verizon iPhone's battery has the same capacity as the standard iPhone 4, the new battery weighs 1.3 grams less.

Overall, these subtle changes to the iPhone 4's design don't make the Verizon version much different. That's not to say there are no differences -- the Verizon iPhone can't use data and voice simultaneously, for instance -- but overall it's still the same great device that Apple released last year.

  • GreenPois0n jailbreak goes untethered for Apple TV

The Chronic Dev team of eager iOS hackers at GreenPois0n has announced an untethered jailbreak for the current Apple TV in the form of RC6 of the eponymous utility. This new build features contributions from the NitoTV team to enable the tetherless feature.

Up until RC6, most iOS 4.2 jailbreak tools for Apple TV performed a tethered jailbreak, meaning you would have to connect your device to your Mac or PC on reboot to get it to start up properly. While this wasn't a huge issue with the ATV (you could simply set it not to sleep), it could be a pain in the neck with iPhones and iPod touches if they lost all charge and needed to be restarted. Past revs of GreenPois0n added untethered JBs for the other devices, but this is the first build that will untether the ATV.

I successfully used Seas0nPass to jailbreak my ATV last week, but I may restore it back to normal to give GreenPois0n a try.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in. Clarified post to distinguish between ATV untethered jailbreak & other devices.
