  • Apple to increase production to meet laptop demand

According to a report out of Digitimes, Apple is doubling the orders of select notebook models in response to increasing demand during this opening quarter of the year. Apple and Samsung are reportedly riding a wave of increasing demand and boosting production, while other manufacturers are preparing for a 5-10% decline in sales that will lower production to last year's level.

The report does not single out the popular Apple notebook(s) that are driving this demand, but the MacBook Air is the most likely culprit. The second generation Air model offers an extraordinarily thin profile with an 11- or 13-inch display and a price tag that starts at $999. Powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor with an SSD drive, the MacBook Air has become one of Apple's most sought after notebooks. Apple's latest quarterly earnings suggest the compact notebook is responsible for boosting Mac sales in the holiday 2010 quarter.

  • Verizon finally introduces iPhone to areas with no AT&T coverage

Up until yesterday, mobile phone customers in vast parts of Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska had no way to get an iPhone. Why? There simply wasn't any AT&T coverage in these areas, so the customers -- who were mostly on Verizon -- had no access to the popular smartphone.

The addition of Verizon as a U.S. carrier opened up doors for a lot of potential iPhone owners, and it appears that many formerly iPhone-less Verizon customers are now embracing the Apple mobile phone. According to an AP news report carried in the Huffington Post, many Verizon stores opened early yesterday in flyover country and were greeted by enthusiastic groups of buyers. While crowds weren't huge -- most Verizon store managers chalked that up to the freezing temperatures in most of this part of the country -- the stores reported brisk sales of the iPhone 4 during the day and many expected to run out of stock by the weekend.

The AP report cited a 20 year-old woman in Fargo, North Dakota who said her Android-based Verizon phone had been the "next best thing in Fargo." The young woman blew her paycheck on the iPhone and said that she had been waiting "so long" for the iPhone to actually arrive in frigid Fargo. Welcome to the world of iPhone, Fargo!

  • AmpliTube Fender for iPhone & iPad set for imminent release

We've just had word from our guy at IK Multimedia that AmpliTube Fender for iPhone and iPad is pending approval at Apple and soon to be available on the iOS App Store.

The AmpliTube Fender app is just like the AmpliTube 2 app, but it's all about Fender tone, which has been critically tested and approved by the tone gurus over at Fender. The app is derived from the award-winning desktop version of AmpliTube Fender.

The app comes packed with five Fender amp models (the '65 Deluxe Reverb, the Super-Sonic, the '65 Twin Reverb, the '59 Bassman LTD and the Pro Junior) and six Fender Stompbox models (Fender Tape Echo, Compressor, the Fender Blender, Fender Phaser, Overdrive and Noise Filter).

The AmpliTube Fender app for iPhone and iPad costs $14.99 / €11.99 and, as previously stated, packs all the recording, practice and play features found in the iOS version of AmpliTube 2. Got AmpliTube 2 already? You can buy the Fender amplifier and stomp box models as bundled or individual in-app purchases for $4.99 / €3.99 per amp, $2.99 / €2.39 per stomp box.

Of course, the software works in conjunction with the iRig adapter that enables you to plug your electric guitar into your iPhone / iPad.

We're looking forward to taking a closer at AmpliTube Fender soon.

  • Apple seeds fourth Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta build to developers
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has seeded another beta build of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers for testing. Build 10J855 comes just over a week after the previous beta release. This is the fourth build of 10.6.7 to be released within the last four weeks.

Apple is requesting that developers continue to test AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application. No known issues are reported with this build. The combo build weighs in at 1 GB and 412.6 MB for the delta build.

  • MacBook Air rumored to receive June update to Sandy Bridge

The new MacBook Air models introduced in October of 2010 have been an amazing success for Apple. Not only were they cited as being responsible for a dramatic increase in Mac sales during Apple's first fiscal quarter for 2011, but the little MacBooks seem to be everywhere. At Macworld Expo last month, it was apparent that the 11.6" MacBook Air had become the de facto "Blogger's Mac," as all of the cool kids had them.

Now CNET is reporting that the best are going to get even better. According to the tech news source, Apple is planning a June update to the MacBook Air that will move the line to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors. As we've discussed here at TUAW in other posts, the Sandy Bridge processors are the third generation of the Intel Core Processors (Core, Nehalem, Sandy Bridge) that currently power the majority of the Mac line.

The main feature of the Sandy Bridge architecture is that the graphics processing silicon is built right onto the chip; there's no need for a secondary chip or chipset to provide that capability. This would allow the new MacBook Air models to boast much speedier gaming and multimedia graphics with no increase in cost or power usage.

Apple is also rumored to have some new MacBook Pro models in the works for a March release. Those devices would be the first to benefit from the newest Intel technology.

  • iPads don't make you attractive to the opposite sex
    Retrovo Study

Sorry to burst your bubble, iPad owners, but owning and using an iPad doesn't exactly make the opposite sex swoon, at least according to Retrevo 's Gadgetology Report. The report asked consumers if they notice other people's gadgets and, if so, how they react to them, and it turns out that seeing someone use an iPad is lower on the standard "I find you attractive" scale than seeing them with a pile of books. Only 36 percent of men are attracted to a woman because of her iPad, versus 42 percent liking a woman reading a book. As for the women, 29 percent like a man with an iPad, and 30 percent prefer book readers. Seems that traditional books really won't be going anywhere, even with all the popularity of the iPad.

With Valentine's Day coming up, it looks like you are going to have to try harder to impress your favorite somebody and do something other than just carry your iPad around in public. Maybe try making an edible iPhone cake, some iCupcakes or a chocolate-covered iPad instead? The possibilities are endless!

I've mentioned myPhoneDesktop before, including listing it as one my best apps from 2010. • TUAW's Daily App: UNO

Everybody knows UNO, the classic card game where you have to match cards going around a table and try to clear out your hand before someone else clears out theirs. Gameloft produced the iPhone version, and it's a respectable recreation of the card game that's available in single or multiplayer. The game even has some extra rule sets, so if you're tired of the core game, you can try some others. Unfortunately, there's no Game Center integration, but the app was updated for Retina Display recently.

In celebration of the game's 40th anniversary, it's on sale at 99 cents for a limited time, so head to the App Store and grab it while it's cheap. There's also a free version to try if a dollar is somehow too much, and there's an iPad HD version as well, though it's still at its normal US$4.99 price.

  • Aspyr updates Civilization V for Mac with downloadable content

Aspyr Media has updated the Mac version of Civilization 5 to fix a few bugs and include support for all of the various DLC packs. The downloadable content includes various new civilizations to play with, plus map packs that load up certain areas or scenarios to rule and conquer as your favorite civ.

Unfortunately, the game isn't in the Mac App Store, but it's available at the usual places to buy Mac games online, including Steam. As you'll know if you've ever played any version of Civ, it's a terrific game, and it's good to see that the Mac version has capability for all the DLC now as well.

  • Steve Jobs working from home on next iPad, iPhone

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Steve Jobs is actively involved in strategic decisions and product development despite his health-related leave of absence from Apple. According to WSJ sources, Jobs has been taking business meetings at his home and on the phone. Two of the areas in which Jobs is actively involved are the next generation iPad, widely expected to go on sale in the next month, and the next generation iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that Jobs has been seen back on Apple's campus, as well as out and about in Palo Alto with another Apple executive. Jobs announced on January 17 that he was taking a medical leave of absence to focus on his health. Apple COO Tim Cook once again stepped up to the Apple helm while Jobs is away, a role in which he performed exceptionally well during the previous absence. As Jobs is widely seen as vital to the continued success of Apple (which he is, but IMHO Apple is solid in creative and business talent), the news of his continued involvement in the company's two highest profile products is no doubt producing a sigh of relief from nervous investors and Apple fans alike.

  • Padprop is a lightweight, useful stand for iPad
Padprop is a portable stand for the iPad that offers something unique: it's perfectly designed to sit between your knees and offer a premium typing angle. Plus, it's very light, tough and even has a storage compartment for your earbuds. I've spent two weeks using one and can now share my experience. Best of all, we've got two to give away later this week. One is my test unit and the other is still new in the box. Read on for my review of the Padprop.

    Construction

Inside the box you'll find he Padprop itself plus two cable covers. The Padprop is very lightweight (it's made of EVA foam) at 50 grammes, but it's tough. Just holding it you know that it's not easily damaged. I've been carrying mine around in my bag, which goes in and out of the car regularly, without incurring any damage.

On the back of the device is a clever storage compartment designed specifically for holding Apple's earbuds. The headphones wrap around a central point while the buds themselves and the jack are pushed into custom recesses. The cable cover rests flush against the back of the Padprop with the earbuds installed, and you don't even know they're there.

Here's a tip: press the earbuds into place first, and then wrap the cable. It's much easier that way.

  • Bloomberg: Apple prepping cheaper phones?
Rumors of a smaller, cheaper iPhone are definitely not new and have floated around for nearly the life of the device. But Bloomberg has an article out today saying that Steve Jobs, despite being out on medical leave, is involved in strategic decisions involving a smaller, cheaper, more universal iPhone. Bloomberg quotes its unnamed source by saying the new phone would retail for about $200, lose the contract, have a universal SIM card and be a third smaller than the current iPhone 4.

Bloomberg points out how Apple released the iPod mini at a time when iPod sales were rising, but the mini addressed a new market segment that couldn't afford the larger version. It makes sense for Apple to eventually expand into the "smaller, cheaper" phone market, if only to go toe-to-toe with the myriad Android handsets now flooding the market.

  • Are Apple's iAds in trouble?
I probably could have told you this one based on the anecdotal data I've heard from developers lately, but "insiders" have told MobileCrunch that Apple's iAd service isn't doing quite as well as Apple had hoped. The fill rate -- which refers to actual ad space that's filled with a paid ad -- has dropped from 18 percent to 6 percent according to the rumors, which means that even though Apple has developers ready to show ads, it's having trouble actually finding advertisers to pay for them.

As MobileCrunch notes, even if this is true, there could be a few reasons for this, from a bad economy to just a bad seasonal trend (that could pick back up as soon as a few months from now). But more likely, it seems, is that Apple just hasn't sold iAds well to advertisers. iAds, as Steve Jobs told us when they were first announced, are a premium product -- they are interactive, well-designed, and of course, the cost is premium as well. But advertisers may not be entirely sold on the power of mobile advertising quite yet, so Apple is likely having trouble finding advertisers both willing to take the risk and big enough to afford it.

The silver lining on this so far is that despite having trouble selling the ads, everything we've heard so far is that the ads do pay off. Not only do they increase brand engagement, but they reach solid customers in exactly the right ways. Still, if Apple can't get advertisers to sign on the dotted line in the first place, it won't have any of those success stories to talk about.

  • Yahoo! announces Livestand for iPad, available first half 2011

If you've been following TUAW's reports about The Daily, you're aware that many of the TUAW bloggers are so fed up with the buggy, crashing newspaper app that they've removed it from their iPads while the app is still free. For me, the crashes and slow loading weren't as much of an irritant as the lack of customizable and local content. I just don't want to pay for horoscopes, fashion news and entertainment gossip that I can't turn off, and the fact that I can't read any local news on the app killed it for me.

Yahoo! has apparently been listening, as the struggling internet giant has announced -- but hasn't shipped -- its solution to the problem that is The Daily. It has announced Livestand for iPad, a customizable news app that will be available "in the first half of 2011." There's no word on whether Yahoo! plans to offer the app for free or, as in the case of The Daily, it will be using subscriptions to refill its coffers.

Yahoo! wants to capitalize on the huge volume of content that it has available from multiple publishers, the billions of photos available from Flickr and the many advertising agreements it already has in place. The company says that Livestand will be a digital newsstand that is "continuously programmed by a person's interests and contexts."

Some of the screenshots (obviously mockups since the app isn't yet available) show local content boxes with top stories, weather and more, all wrapped in a very visual package that is reminiscent of the Flipboard content page. That makes me wonder if it might not just be a better, and more timely, solution to just load Flipboard with RSS feeds of local news from Yahoo! That solution would also make it less likely for me to have to put up with ads that are "data-rich, actionable, even location aware."

I'll let you know how my Yahoo! feeds + Flipboard = Local Newspaper experiment works. Perhaps I'll get my own version of Livestand for iPad well before July rolls around.

  • iPhone passcode bypassed by security researchers

A group of German researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology report that they've cracked the iPhone's keychain system, allowing access to the passwords saved on any phone in just six minutes.

By jailbreaking the target phone and installing an SSH app on it, the hackers found they could access any information on the phone that they wanted, without the need to input a passcode or any other form of security from the user. In other words, if they can get their hands on your iPhone, they have access to everything on the keychain, which includes any Gmail or Exchange accounts saved on the phone, as well as network, Wi-Fi and voicemail passwords, as well as the passwords on some apps.

You can read the full report as a PDF online. The only solution that Frauhofer lists in the report is that any lost or stolen iPhone must require its owners to assume that all passwords included on the handset are compromised, and must all be changed and replaced as soon as possible.

It's hard to think what Apple might be able to do about this -- as long as the phone can be jailbroken, this seems possible, and obviously Apple hasn't been able to stop jailbreaks in the past, for a number of reasons. On the other hand, this hack needs access to the phone itself, so if you don't lose your phone, you're still good to go.

  • Gruber: iPad 3 coming this fall?

We don't have an official announcement of the iPad 2 yet, but Daring Fireball's John Gruber is already speculating that the iPad 3 -- what he says will be a competitor to the just-announced HP TouchPad -- will be ready by fall.

"If my theory is right, they're [HP] not only going to be months behind the iPad 2, but if they slip until late summer, they might bump up against the release of the iPad 3," Gruber speculated on Wednesday.

He quickly clarified, after sparking a flurry of rumors, that despite Apple's predictability when it comes to hardware releases, it does sometimes pull out surprises -- think the iPod mini. Gruber thinks that Apple will move the iPad's production schedule to match that of the iPod, a September release primed to take advantage of holiday sales. What would this entail?

    • New hardware, the iPad 2, pretty soon. This would back up reports that the iPad 2 is already in production.
    • An announcement of iOS 5 around the same time, ready for the annual iPhone release.
    • The iPad 3 in September, which might actually be a tweaked version of the iPad 2, quite possibly with Retina Display.

AppleInsider reported on this as well, adding in a TechCrunch report saying that Apple has a surprise planned for the fall regarding the iPad 3.

What are your thoughts? Is Apple possibly moving to a fall schedule for the iPad?

  • The Onion imagines Apple's first product release under Tim Cook
In a week filled with Verizon iPhone sales and analyst expectations, it is nice to have some humorous stories to break things up. Thanks to The Onion, Apple fans can take a look ahead at the first big announcement of a product spearheaded by interim CEO Tim Cook. The fleshy version of the MacBook was described as being "cutting-edge" by Cook and "disgusting" by those in the audience who had the privilege of experiencing the product first-hand.

This latest MacBook version features shave-able USB ports, an eye-enhanced camera, keratinized keyboard and is available with a flesh-like surface that sheds monthly. The latest notebook to grace Apple's illustrious lineup also includes advanced auditory controls that provide users with life-like reactions, such as snoring when put to sleep, yelling when woken up and moaning when the battery is low.

This spectacle of a device is available in 13-, 15- and 17-inch models that are powered by a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Pricing for the 13-inch model will begin at $1299. • Skype updates iOS app for Verizon iPhone

All of the new Verizon iPhone 4 owners who are looking for apps to install on their shiny new devices can add Skype to the list. The free Skype app has been updated today so that it functions properly on the Verizon iPhone, and the update also adds support for the H.264 codec. This support is crucial to allowing Skype users to call from their iOS devices to more Skype-enabled devices, including new TVs from Panasonic and Samsung.

Of course, now that you're on the "Can You Hear Me Now?[TM]" network, you shouldn't need to resort to Skype for your calls, should you?

  • EFI adds AirPrint to corporate copiers and printers

AirPrint is wonderful for those of us who can use it to print to home printers, but until now, the technology has been useless for most corporate copier / printers. That's all set to change now that EFI is providing support for AirPrint to its signature Fiery print servers.

The PrintMe Connect software enables direct wireless printing from any iOS 4.2 mobile device. The software is free to download, and it works for printing to any Fiery-driven printer. According to EFI, "It is a software application that runs as a proxy on a Windows system to enable AirPrint printing for Fiery-driven printers with System 8/8e or later software version." AppleInsider notes that PrintMe Connect expands AirPrint to work with large format, high end and multifunction printers in the enterprise, and that there are more than 250,000 printers in corporate offices that will benefit from this free update.

Up to this point, only HP has announced printers that are officially supported by AirPrint, so it's exciting to see that the iOS printing standard is now making it to the big leagues with EFI. Do you work in an office where your print jobs are routed through a Fiery print server? Let us know if your corporation allows you to use PrintMe Connect for printing from your iOS device.

  • Verizon iPhone customers line up across the US

Verizon customers began lining up to snag an iPhone 4 from the nation's most reliable carrier today. People were lining up across the country, but most lines were reportedly light. Long lines with wait times of several hours were not expected given the ample pre-order opportunities and the cold temperatures, which would drive folks inside. Nonetheless, there are a few brave souls who stood out in the cold to buy an iPhone 4 on its first day of availability. Check out our gallery below of a sampling of lines from coast to coast.
