  • EA breaks records with App Store sales last quarter

EA LogoWhile their sales may not add up to all 10 billion apps that the App Store has sold, Electronic Arts is boasting of amazing third quarter sales of its own iOS apps. Joystiq reports that COO John Schappert recently discussed just how well EA apps did during the holiday season. Schappert said, "The day after Christmas, the millions who were activating their new devices, EA held 14 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPhone and 15 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPad."

Part of the reason EA did so well, other than offering titles iOS users were obviously willing to pay for, was that it dropped prices on most of its iOS apps in December, setting off a price war amongst developers on the App Store. EA's timing was impeccable, however, because Apple froze the App Store charts on December 23, leaving many EA titles right near or at the top of the charts for the remainder of the holidays. Very smart indeed.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Battleheart
There are tons of great RPG apps out lately, and I'm not sure why that is -- something about the way the App Store has developed. At any rate, here's another one. Battleheart is just out this week, and it's really amazing. The game is a real-time RPG battler. There's not a lot of story or extras to this one, but the core system, in which you choose a group of heroes and send them out to battle oncoming hordes in various settings, is designed and executed very well. There are the usual RPG trappings of extra skills and better equipment, but the bonus here is the control scheme -- the cute little heroes are super easy to drag around, set up as healers or drop spells as a magic user.

The graphics are polished, the sounds and music are great, and the variety of classes and their various abilities is really awesome. Unfortunately, there's not a ton of content -- the main battle mode is all there is, and while it takes a while to play through (probably more than enough for most casual players), there's no multiplayer, survival mode or any other gameplay to check out. There's no Game Center integration at all, either. Some users have reported crashes as well, and on that your mileage may vary. But all of those things can (and probably will) be patched in later. The core game is available right now for US $2.99, and it's worth every penny.

  • Pre-ordering the iPhone 4 from Verizon and Apple
Right on time, iPhone 4 pre-orders went live early on Thursday morning for Verizon Wireless customers. We took both Apple and Verizon for a spin to see how each company is handling the pre-order process. We are happy to report that both Apple and Verizon are handling the pre-order process without flinching. Even after an hour, the two websites were up and running without any sign of overload. While both outlets were prepared, the choice of a 3 AM start time most likely cut down on the heavy traffic and helped them to handle any load.

Overall, the Apple pre-order was a smoother and faster process than Verizon. Because Apple is not the wireless carrier, the pre-order skipped over the selection of calling plans, data plans, accessories and insurance options. While you still have to choose these options, you can make your selections during the activation process. At that point, you will have your iPhone in hand, and you will be calm, cool and collected.

Most of the billing and shipping steps were the same between Verizon and Apple, but there were a few notable differences along the way. First, Apple only provided an option to upgrade an existing line, while Verizon lets you select from either adding a new line (credit check required) or upgrading an existing line. This is an important distinction for customers looking to add a line for a friend or family member. Also, customers buying the handset at the full retail price should note that Apple was selling the 16 GB and 32 GB iPhone 4 for US$50 less than Verizon.

If you purchased a Verizon iPhone in the wee hours of the morning, give us a shout in the comments. If you opted to sleep in, you can check out our gallery of the purchase process below.

  • Verizon iPhone now available for pre-order

Once the Apple Store came back up, the biggest change was that iPhone pre-orders are finally available through Apple. Oddly enough, pre-orders were available through Verizon's site about 15 minutes before the supposed "switch throw" time of 3 AM Eastern, and we know of at least one customer who had a completely seamless order experience.

We have at least one TUAW writer who's been up all night awaiting pre-order availability, and we'll have a post about the pre-order experience later on. Meanwhile, if you've been waiting for the Verizon iPhone, your wait is finally over ... well, the wait to order one, anyway, as the handset will be delivered by February 10. Existing Verizon customers can order now, and everyone else can order starting February 9.

  • The US Apple Store is down - you'll never guess why

Apple's online store for the US is down (all other countries' stores are still up). If I were a betting man, though, I'd say it'll be back up by 3 AM, when pre-orders for the Verizon iPhone are expected to begin. I'd also say it's a fair bet that a big percentage of people in the US who are still awake at this hour are awake because of the pre-orders. We'll let you know when the store comes back up, though it shouldn't take too long.

Update: The store is back up, and the Verizon iPhone is now available for pre-order.

  • Periodicals on App Store must offer in-app subscriptions by March 31

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple will require any subscription-based periodical apps on the App Store to offer an in-app purchase option by March 31 or else face rejection. While that may sound like a fairly draconian demand on Apple's part, the Journal also notes (albeit way down in the article) that Apple is still allowing publishers to offer subscription purchasing options outside the App Store so long as in-app purchasing is offered, too.

While the Journal says Apple hasn't commented on what this means for e-book apps like Amazon's Kindle reader, I'll go out on a limb and say that Sony's recent "the sky is falling" media frenzy following the rejection of its Reader app was likely much ado about nothing. So long as Apple still allows content purchased outside of the app's in-app purchase mechanism, there doesn't seem to be anything untoward going on here.

The road ahead still looks slightly bumpy, however; while in-app subscription purchasing is a potential boon to users, there's no indication that Apple's giving up its 30 percent cut of in-app purchase sales. That might be more than some companies are willing to swallow, Amazon in particular, so it's unclear how certain publishers will react to the mandatory in-app purchasing rules even if off-app purchasing is still allowed. We'll be watching very carefully how Apple's relationship with publishers plays out over the next couple of months

  • AT&T increases tethering plan by 2 GB, still charges way too much

In what can be interpreted as an attempt to stanch a possibly hemorrhagic flow of customers flocking to the Verizon iPhone, AT&T has added an extra 2 GB per month to its phone tethering plan for the same US$20/month rate as the previous plan, which came with no extra data at all.

Note that AT&T's press release (and Engadget's coverage) doesn't specifically mention the iPhone getting access to this increased tethering cap, and the HTC Inspire 4G is getting first crack at the new plan starting February 13. However, if AT&T doesn't eventually give its iPhone customers the extra capacity in addition to its other smartphone customers, the company's frankly just shooting itself in the other foot -- its first foot's already been shot completely off by AT&T's notorious history with iPhone tethering.

It still baffles me that US customers have to pay extra for tethering at all; data is data, regardless of how it's pulled down from the network. Here in New Zealand we're not exactly known for having generous cost per GB plans, but at least our carriers' attitudes toward tethering are more pragmatic; there's no extra charge for tethering your iPhone, and the carriers have all said, "If you're willing to pay for the data, then tether away to your heart's content."

At least AT&T is finally adding some actual value to the tethering plan by including extra data, but it's still charging an awful lot of money for a service that other countries' carriers include for no charge.

  • Verizon employees, family members asked to wait before buying iPhone

In a sure sign of expected high demand, Verizon Wireless has sent an email to its employees urging them and their family members to "put customers first" and postpone iPhone purchases. "I know customers aren't the only ones who are excited -- employees are, too," the memo reads. "While I share your excitement, over the coming weeks we all need to do our part to meet our customers' needs -- this means putting our customers first."

According to commenters on the linked article from tipb (including a Verizon employee), Verizon actually has enforcement set up to ensure employees follow this mandate. If a Verizon employee activates an iPhone 4 on a business line (which Verizon pays for), the line will immediately change to a personal line, which the employee has to pay for.

That part sounds reasonable to me, but telling Verizon employees not to buy the handset at all, even on a personal line, seems excessive, especially since the company is also telling family members not to buy an iPhone 4. If I worked for Verizon, I'd smile and nod at this email, then promptly delete it and tell my family to order whatever they want, whenever they want. As for me, if I was a Verizon employee, I'd follow the mandate and not order an iPhone 4 for myself ... but only because I'd be waiting for the iPhone 5, expected to be released in about four to five months.

  • Verizon iPhone prep: Save your old voicemail, it's not coming with you

Thinking of picking up a new iPhone 4 for your Verizon account in the coming weeks? Macworld's review is already up, as are Engadget's, Techcrunch's and Wired's (spoiler: it's an iPhone 4!). But if you want to save any of those all-important legacy voicemails during the setup process, be sure to read this tip over at Verizon called Getting Ready for iPhone 4 - Saving Your Existing Voice Mail.

Depending on whether or not your old phone supports Verizon's Visual Voice Mail service, there are two sets of directions to make sure you don't lose any of your messages when setting up your new voice mailbox. It's important to note that once your new iPhone 4 is activated, you will no longer have access to your existing voice mailbox, so it's vital that you follow the instructions provided if you want to keep any messages.

For those with savvy devices, you can add the US$2.99 Visual Voice Mail service pack, which lets you download voicemails to your computer. If you have a phone that doesn't work with Visual Voice Mail, Verizon suggests contacting a third-party service provider to offload the voicemails ... at which point you might consider whether you really want to hold onto them. You can always play them back into your computer microphone for recording if you absolutely need them.

Earlier today, Megan Lavey filled us in on the availability of Verizon's Transfer app for migrating your contacts to VZW iPhones. This free app will make sure your contact list doesn't get lost when setting up your new device.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will be available to qualified customers for pre-order tomorrow, February 3, and I already heard from my brother that he's going to get up early to get his order in. How many of you will be doing the same?

  • Macworld Expo 2011: Trouble Brothers' Sword of Fargoal 2 and other titles

Jeff McCord and Steve Shippert head up a Seattle-based company called Trouble Brothers, and while I visited their booth at Macworld to talk about iOS games, the two have quite a gaming history. They met while playing trivia games in Seattle, and they have worked on real-life board games in the past. They've also done some educational game titles and even a city-wide treasure hunt in their hometown. So these guys know gaming, and the games they've produced for iOS make that very clear.

First up, I got to see Sword of Fargoal 2. Sword of Fargoal is one of the most popular RPG titles on the App Store -- it's a retro title that is based on an old roguelike game that's actually run by another company -- Fargoal, LLC -- of which McCord is a part. With his partners Elias Pshernig and Lead Designer Paul Pridham, McCord was showing the game at the same booth, even though it's not technically a Trouble Brothers title.

Sword of Fargoal 2 keeps that basic idea, but updates the aesthetic quite a bit. In addition to new music and new dungeon types, there will also be new classes to play via in-app purchase (Thief, Magic user, Ranger and Fighter) as well as male and female versions of each. I also got to see some new animated openings for the game, and they look terrific.

  • Organized ring charged with using fake credit cards at Apple Stores

Prosecutors in New York City have charged 27 people with organizing and running a ring of credit card fraud that was used to rip off Apple Stores around the United States. The thieves were able to buy over $1 million of Apple gear by obtaining stolen credit card numbers and manufacturing IDs and credit cards to go along with them, which were then used to simply purchase computers and devices straight from Apple. Those devices were then sold through a fence in Brooklyn, NY.

NPR also says that three guns, $300,000 in cash and various bank accounts were seized during the investigation, which apparently went on so long that even when the original ringleader was arrested and placed in jail, he passed messages to his girlfriend about how to keep the ring going. The charges filed involve incidents from June 2008 up to last December, so like a lot of other Apple-related thefts we've seen, the items "purchased" were likely iPhones, iPads and MacBooks.

  • Reuters staffer spots iPad 2 at The Daily launch event

Imagine, if you will, a high-profile introduction for a major new media product on the iPad; major enough to merit attendance and brief remarks from Apple's Eddy Cue. Let's posit for a moment that the room is filled with professional journalists who make it their business to notice small details that might lead to interesting stories.

Consider as well the possibility that some of the Apple team members in attendance might be carrying some product models that are ... unacknowledged, shall we say?

Yes, the front runners for the 2011 Phone In A Bar Accidental Scoop Awards are the new team of Apple and Reuters. The party of the first part seems to have brought along an iPad with front-facing camera to today's launch event for The Daily, and a Reuters reporter saw the device in the wild.

Reuters says "a source with knowledge of the device" confirmed that this was not a trick of the light, and that the real chips-and-salsa iPad 2s will indeed sport the camera along with other yet-to-be-confirmed features.

Nice job, anonymous Reuters reporter. Good luck on the job market, Apple intern who was supposed to bring the gaffer's tape and cover the iPad cameras.

  • Apple seeking photo software expert for iPad

A job listing on Apple's Jobs site (and by that we mean careers, not Steve) asks for an iOS photography software engineer specifically to work on "the Mac and iPad platforms," fueling more speculation that a future iPad will likely have a camera built into it. This is far from a confirmation -- in fact, the job ad mentions that the position will tackle "text rendering and editing and HTML generation for publishing and viewing photo based content," so it could be a position working on a viewer for web-based photos, or some sort of official photo editing app on the iPad itself, not necessarily involving taking pictures with the device.

But it certainly does seem logical that we'll see a camera on the iPad eventually -- even if the use case is a little different than a phone you always have with you, the iPad would certainly benefit from being able to see the world. Even the Mac has an iSight on it, so if nothing else, we can hope for a camera like that.

  • TUAW TV Live: Covering all the iPad bases

Welcome back to another episode of TUAW TV Live, the live streaming video show where I try to make history each week by cramming as many reviews, giveaways (sometimes) and personal comments into one hour as possible.

Today's show is going to be a parade of hardware -- mainly iPad cases -- and apps that have arrived at the TUAW TV Live studios since the end of Macworld Expo on Saturday. Trust me, there's been a steady stream of UPS and FedEx trucks here as a few companies that didn't make it to Expo, as well as some who promised me review samples at Expo, are all shipping their goods at once. One that I saw at Expo and thought was oh-so-sexy was the iSkin Aura you see at right.

From your Mac or PC, go to the next page by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of this post, and you'll find a livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream Viewing Application. If you're on an iPad, you should be able to use the Skyfire Browser to watch the stream, although you will not be able to participate in the chat.

We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you get the live stream.

  • Dave Caolo: Another look at The Daily

Earlier today, my colleague Steve Sande published his initial impressions of The Daily, and Mel Martin added his perspective as a journalist. I also spent some time with the app this afternoon, and I have collected my initial thoughts here.

    UI and Navigation

The Daily's designers were extremely ambitious. As a brand-spanking new technology (the device isn't even one year old), the iPad newspaper is a UI free-for-all. Check out USA TODAY, The New York Times, The Financial Times and The Daily. Each accomplishes the same tasks, like opening a story or moving between stories, differently. That's a good thing, as it sparks creativity and critical thought. How would I like this to work? What's the best way for a user to find a featured editorial? What's the best way to identify a video or slideshow?

It's also dangerous for the very same reason.

  • Verizon Transfer app for contact migration to VZW iPhones already on App Store

In preparation for the upcoming Verizon iPhone launch, you may notice the VZ Transfer app on the App Store. The free app only works on Verizon iPhones, which means it doesn't do anything yet. But that doesn't seem to be stopping some exceptionally clever people from downloading it, discovering it does nothing on an AT&T phone and then giving it a one-star review.

VZ Transfer will transfer contacts from legacy phones (via Verizon's Backup Assistant) to the new Verizon iPhone. The transfer service will be verified via an access code sent through text message to your Verizon mobile number.

As confirmed earlier, qualified Verizon customers will be able to pre-order the iPhone in a little under 12 hours. Pre-orders for all qualified customers will take place February 9, and the device will officially go on sale at retail on February 10 at 7 AM.

  • join.me introduces mobile viewer for iPad

Today, join.me introduced their free iOS viewer, allowing users to participate in online meetings and screen sharing from their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. A bunch of us TUAWians spent time yesterday afternoon exploring join.me in its browser-based form. join.me is a new conferencing/screen-sharing website from the makers of LogMeIn, a popular remote screen solution.

What makes join.me so compelling for us is that it takes about 5 seconds to set up, and it doesn't require registration for casual use. If you need more, it costs US$29/month or $299/year for pro-level support.

With join.me, you don't have to plan out a conference. When you decide that you need to meet, the tools are all there and ready for you. Just send around the connection URL, and you're good to go. We were able to move our normal back-channel discussions from IRC to join.me in just a couple of minutes, including the step where it downloaded a small app to our Macs.

  • TUAW TV Live: All the Apple news that's fit to cover your iPad

This morning's yawner of a press conference about The Daily was quickly followed by a mad rush to install the new app and review it, but there's a lot of other news to cover today. Today on TUAW TV Live, I'll be picking up where Macworld Expo left off, with live reviews of the ZooGue Version 2 iPad case, TypeCase iPad case, a new and beautiful iSkin iPad case and some iPad cases and an iPad stand from NewerTech. Yep, it looks like this could be the iPad case episode of TUAW TV Live.

But wait, there's more! I'll also be reviewing the Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4, the new Kanex HDMI adapter for mini-Display Port and a few apps for iPad and iPhone. Those LensPen Sidekick iPad screen cleaners? Yes, I'll show you how they work on a smudgy iPad screen. How about the Glif? We'll take a look at it, too. I'm pretty sure that Doc Rock will be joining us in the chat room for commentary about my behavior at some of the Macworld Expo parties (note: I'm always on my best behavior).

I'll be getting started at 5 PM ET today, so be sure to point your browser back here to TUAW.com a few minutes ahead of that time to join the chat and start up the livestream.

  • Mel Martin: The Daily through the eyes of one journalist

I've spent most of my life in the news business, both in reporting and management, so something like The Daily, which premiered today is of high interest to me, both as a new media observer and as a voracious news consumer. From where I sit, The Daily looks pretty good. It's attractive, has some depth and has a varied mix of news. The creators clearly understood that providing news in the digital age isn't just about moving static content to a tablet, but using the features the tablet includes to enable video, audio, animation and graphics in a way simply not possible with something delivered on a piece of paper.

I think the pricing is right. At $0.14 an issue, versus Time Magazine at $5 an issue, it seems a reasonable toll. If I were the New York Times, Washington Post or others planning expensive web editions, Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp, just ruined my day. Today feels a bit like the day in the 80s when I first saw a CD-ROM filled with thousands of text files. It was something different that had the power to change the way we consume information. I'm just as excited to see how media companies will respond to The Daily.

Apple is finally helping the process along by allowing subscriptions from the App Store. This way, more media companies will join the battle for subscribers. It isn't clear what kind of money Apple is extracting from publishers, and we don't know for sure Apple is giving media companies subscriber information, but I think it is likely Apple will report something -- we just don't know what. The change of terms in the iTunes Store, released today, says that Apple may ask for permission to provide some of your personal info to publishers for marketing purposes. The new terms aren't very specific as yet, but it's clearly a change from the old policies that is enabling things like The Daily to go forward.

  • Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily

I haven't read a newspaper since the Rocky Mountain News went belly-up a few years ago, and I'm not a fan of broadcast or cable news at all. So Rupert Murdoch (at right, during this morning's press conference) and his minions at News Corp have a long way to go to impress someone who pretty much gets all of his news from RSS feeds, occasional peeks at news websites, and Twitter. I downloaded The Daily for free a few minutes ago and will be reading it for the next two weeks courtesy of Verizon, but the big question is whether or not I'll continue to read the iPad-only newspaper after that point.

At first glance, The Daily appears to be a good "national and international news source." As noted during this morning's press conference, it uses the capabilities of the iPad to the max. As the inaugural editorial mentions, "Modern technology has given us more ways to tell stories than ever before -- words, pictures, audio, video and interactive graphics. The Daily will deliver them all."

Indeed, The Daily even provides such TUAW staples as app reviews, with direct links to the App Store. But before you stop reading TUAW, realize that we cover "nothin' but Apple." With The Daily, you'll get opinion pieces on Bollywood as well... The Apps & Games section of the The Daily included a video today about The Oregon Trail moving to Facebook, and you can flip to the News section with a tap or two and watch a video piece about the uprising in Egypt. There's also a daily video update that is available from the carousel page with links to the top stories. You tap on the video to go right to a featured story.

Click read more (below the gallery) for the rest of my first impressions. We'll have more impressions from other TUAW writers later today.

  • Two New Jersey Apple Stores to open for non-retail activity on Sundays

Good news for New Jersey residents living in Bergen County. The two local apple stores in Paramus and Woodcliff Lake will soon be open on Sundays, ifoAppleStore reports. Due to blue laws that are still in effect in the county, these Apple stores are the only two Apple retail outlets that are currently closed every Sunday.

Blue laws, implemented decades ago, have remained on the books in some locations across the U.S. They were originally adopted to set aside a day for religious observance; many people enjoy the break from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

To work around these Sunday commerce restrictions, the Apple stores will be open for non-sale activities such as customer training sessions and Genius Bar visits. Retail purchases will not be allowed during store hours. Presumably, the stores will adopt Apple's current schedule and will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. or 7 p.m.

It will be interesting to see how this plan works out. Each store averages 2,600 visitors each day and it is inevitable that each retailer will encounter numerous customers confused and upset by their inability to make a purchase. Perhaps they'll be redirected to the online Apple Store instead.

  • App Store terms and conditions updated to cover subscriptions

If you download The Daily (or any other app) from the App Store today, you'll be prompted to read and accept new terms and conditions. The update addresses subscriptions; something we and publishers have been anticipating and debating for a long time.

According to the new T&C, "Purchases of subscriptions to access the Services available through the Licensed Application are controlled, handled and processed by Apple and all payment and all other matters regarding such purchases (including any information you submit or that may be collected in connection with such purchases) are subject to and governed by the applicable Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Apple. Accordingly, we encourage that you review Apple's policies prior to making any purchase."

During this morning's announcement, The Daily became the very first newspaper app in the store to offer customers a subscription option. Users can opt to pay either US$0.99 per week or $39.99 annually as a one-time payment from within the app. During the question and answer session that followed, Apple's Eddy Cue was asked if and when this model would be extended to other app store publishers. His only answer was "very soon." We can only assume that publishers' ears perked up at that comment.

For example, Time, Inc. and Apple have been at odds over the very model that The Daily uses for some time. In fact, Time went so far as to say that cost-cutting and other related problems have actually hindered the development of its Sports Illustrated app.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, we expect to see subscriptions roll out within the month, maybe even the fortnight. Eliminating per-issue costs should help to reduce the slide that iPad magazines are currently experiencing.

Your modem is now compatible with your beautiful Mac computer for super-fast mobile cruising of the internet. About 13 hours ago (at writing of this post), Verizon announced -- via a VZWNetwork tweet -- the latest Verizon Access Manager for Mac software (version 7.2.4) as available for download.

Unfortunately, if you've got the LG VL600 Verizon 4G LTE dongle, we're afraid you're still out of luck. However, this dongle is still expected to become Mac compatible at some point later in February.

  • The Daily now available in the App Store

As of this writing, Rupert Murdoch and team are taking questions from the press during The Daily's launch event, and the app itself is now live in the App Store. The long-anticipated app was finally demonstrated and released earlier today. Verizon is sponsoring a free two-week trial period for all customers. After that it will cost US$0.99 per day week or 39.99 per year.

We'll have more on The Daily throughout the day, so check back often.

  • The Daily launch at 11am to stream live, News.me coming to compete

It's less than an hour until the NYC launch event for The Daily, News Corp's much-anticipated newspaper for the iPad. If you want to keep up with the event live, it appears that it will be streamed directly from thedaily.com. For those who follow such things, Poynter has sussed out the likely masthead crew for the publication's launch, and it's well stocked with print and new media veterans.

Meanwhile, other publishing behemoths are not standing still while Rupert Murdoch stakes a claim on the touchable territory of daily iPad periodicals. TechCrunch reports that News.me, the New York Times' quasi-answer to The Daily, is being built by Betaworks and will be much more of a social newsreader (think Flipboard on steroids) than a traditional, original-content driven title. The app will include both licensed and free-to-read content that is curated, promoted and passively voted-up by your Twitter friends and followers.

However you like your iPad news -- print-centric, or driven by the titans of broadcast and cable news, or pushed from Internet-only upstarts -- your choices are about to expand.

  • iSuppli suggests Apple's cash infusion going toward display manufacturing
During Apple's recent earnings conference call, Tim Cook confirmed Apple was spending $3.9 billion on pre-payments for unspecified components. Aware of the AMOLED display shortages that plague the mobile phone industry, analysts and tech pundits alike assumed Cook was referring to the LCD displays used in the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

One early hint of a manufacturing deal for display technology surfaced in early 2009 when Apple reportedly signed a five-year deal with LG to supply displays for its notebooks and Cinema displays as well as the iPhone and iPod touch. A more recent rumor suggested Apple was investing in a Toshiba-owned manufacturing facility for retina displays.

IHS iSuppli has dug up information from its manufacturing channels that corroborate these rumors. According to iSuppli, Apple's $3.9 billion in pre-payments is headed to LG Display, Sharp, and Toshiba Mobile display and would secure the supply of advanced LCD displays for the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

Besides buying displays from the trio of display makers, Apple is also investing in manufacturing facilities to build the high resolution IPS (in-plane switching) and LTPS (low-temperature polysilicon) LCD panels used in its mobile devices. By investing in these LCD companies, Apple is securing for itself a steady supply of displays which will meet the growing consumer demand for its popular iPhone and iPad.

  • Apple seeds third Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta build to developers
Mac OS X beta build 10J850 has been seeded to developers for testing by Apple. This is the third beta build of 10.6.7 to be released to developers in just under two weeks. The previous beta, build 10J846, was seeded to developers just over a week ago.

As reported by MacRumors, Apple is requesting that developers continue to test AirPort, SMB file sharing, Bonjour, graphics drivers and the Mac App Store application. No known issues are reported with this build.

Build 10J850 weighs in at 1011.8 MB for the combo update and 376.9 MB for the delta update.

For the rest of us non-developers, the official public release of 10.6.7 can't be too far away, can it? And let's not forget, we've got OS X Lion to look forward to in the not so distant future, too!

  • TUAW's Daily App: Archer's Quest

I would describe Archer's Quest as "Angry Birds for real gamers." The game shares some core components of the popular iPhone hit, namely that to play, you pull back on a projectile and fire it at your opponents. But while Angry Birds was fun and cartoony, Archer's Quest is a little more serious ... but only a little. The game is very loosely based around the story of Archer William Tell, and your goal as the player is simply to get involved in a series of archery duels. You and your opponent take shots at each other, with you determining the angle and power of each of your shots, and you need to hit him more than he hits you.

The story adds a little role-playing, as you can upgrade your equipment and even choose shots as you roll along. Hitting your opponent in various places on his body means you do more or less damage, so not only do you need to hit him, but where you hit him matters a lot; it also makes for some sometimes gory and often well-rendered deaths. There is Game Center integration included, but no multiplayer; hopefully we'll see that in an update, maybe along with a survival mode.

Even without those extras, Archer's Quest is a lot of fun. The full version is a bargain at US$0.99, and there's a lite version to try if you don't want to plunk down the buck just yet.

  • Macworld Expo 2011: CrossOver goes to version 10 with Impersonator

If you want to run Windows apps on your Mac, there are now a few ways to go about it. First there's Boot Camp, the official solution that will let you boot into an installed Windows partition. Then there are virtualization solutions like Parallels or VMWare, which "pretend" to be a separate hard drive with an installed Windows partition. Finally, there's emulation, and that's what CodeWeavers' CrossOver does. Rather than an actual Windows installation, CrossOver pretends to be Windows and allows Windows apps to run on a Mac, even without an actual Windows CD.

Impersonator is the company's code name for version 10 of the app, which was just recently released. CodeWeavers' Jon Parshall told me the most recent trends in emulation are away from standard apps like Office software and games, and into more niche apps like specific business and industrial software. CrossOver's compatibility list is better than ever, and the new version introduces a feature called CrossTie. CrossTie will both install CrossOver and get it up and running with a specific app directly from one file downloaded from CodeWeavers' website. For example, if you want to play Battlefield Vietnam with CrossOver, you can download the CrossTie file, follow some easy instructions to create a "bottle," hook it up to the game, and you're good to go.

I saw one run in action in the company's booth (while surrounded by celebrity impersonators -- the company was good at grabbing attention during the show). It seemed really simple to set up, though I didn't spend a lot of time checking out how it ran. CrossOver has 8200 apps listed for compatibility, and there are about four to five hundred CrossTie files available, with more coming all the time.

  • Macworld Expo 2011: Altigen Communications' iFusion handset

Whenever you meet up with anyone at big conventions like last week's Macworld 2011, you eventually ask what they've seen lately that's cool. Everyone wants to know what the hottest item on the floor is, the most interesting thing to see or check out at the show. Last week, more often than not, my answer was the iFusion from Altigen Communications. Like the iRetrophone, the iFusion is a full-scale handset with an iPhone dock on it, and it works via Bluetooth with your iPhone to either let you speak through the handle or have a speakerphone conversation. Altigen is a huge phone provider, and it also has an official business phone app on the App Store that allows for separate intranet extension dialing (and a bunch of other business-based features), but it decided to build and sell this handset just for the heck of it.

iFusion works with any app that supports Bluetooth, including the built-in Phone app, Skype, Line2 and any others. There's even a USB cord in the back, so the phone can also sync through the handset. I got to play with it at Macworld, and iFusion is nice and strong; it's a little light, but very durable and well-made. Altigen told me that it was aiming for an Apple aesthetic with the device, and while it doesn't quite get there, it does look good.

iFusion is US$169 and will be available for sale in April. I bet there will be plenty of businesses aiming to buy a bunch of these, but I wouldn't mind having one for my own home. I haven't owned a landline for years now, and it would be nice to have a handset again.

  • 9to5Mac acquires iPad 2 display

9to5Mac reports that it has acquired an iPad 2 display from iPhone repair shop iFIxYouri.com. 9to5Mac has not been able to verify the display's resolution yet, though one of the site's commenters has made an unverified claim that the display is a 9.7-inch display from LG with a 1024 x 768 resolution, the same resolution as the current iPad. If they really want to verify the display resolution, I can think of one way: put it under a microscope.

Noting higher build quality compared to the currently-shipping iPad's LCD, 9to5Mac also says the display is lighter and over a millimeter thinner than the current iPad's display. The display appears superficially similar to one that parts reseller GlobalDirectParts offered a few weeks ago (which has since been pulled from the site), which lends credence to 9to5Mac's claim that this is the next-gen iPad's display.

We expect the iPad 2 to debut within the next couple of months, so we'll know if this display is the real deal relatively soon.
